  • Follow all rules listed here.
  • Schedule via Smogon VMs. It's easier for hosts to make decisions for activity calls when I can actually see what went down with scheduling.
  • If you are unable to schedule with your opponent, please let your managers know ASAP so they can communicate that to the hosts or the other team's managers for a potential substitute.
  • Substitutions may be made after a week has started. When making a substitution, please tag myself, the managers of the opposing team, and all of the players affected by the substitute to ensure that everyone is made aware. Players who have already played in the week or were subbed out in the same week cannot be subbed back in.
  • If a match remains incomplete by the time of the deadline, it will be subject to an activity call.
  • Replays are mandatory. Not only are they useful for confirming wins, they contribute to usage stats and allow the people who couldn't watch the games live to watch them later.
  • Managers: Please send me your lineups in the same format that I used to post pairings. It makes it much easier to post future rounds more quickly.
  • If there are any line-up errors, let us know ASAP

Game 1: BananatimeZ v Sami

I doubt anyone that knows these players would expect these teams to be loaded. Mega Diancie is one of Sami's favourite mons and Banana appears to have brought a Mega Diancie HO. My guess is LO Sucker Punch Yveltal, Taunt SD Arceus, Meteor Beam Tera Dragon Eternatus, Play Rough Zacian-C and standard Ultra Necrozma.

Sami's is a bit of an unsual Alomomola team. He showed it to me earlier in the week and I thought that Gambit made it a bit too weak to Zacian-C. Mola teams don't tend to love Zacian-C, but usually are able to play around it reasonably well, but Gambit complicates things. You'd think that Primal Groudon has Rock Tomb as opposing Calm Mind Arceus and Dragon Dance Necrozma-DM can be an issue. Beyond that it is probably more standard stuff.

Game

Sami's Zygarde leads off against Banana's Mega Diancie. This suggests Dragon Dance as Banana has a pretty rough time against it if it can get the free turn. Sami quickly confirms this is the case as it Tera Grounds to absorb Moonblast, get off a transformation and a Dragon Dance. It then easily takes care of Arceus and puts Banana in a 50/50 with Yveltal. Banana does not Sucker Punch and instead Oblivion Wings and knocks out Zygarde. Gambit comes in and is Taunted as it fails to Sucker Punch and takes half of Zacian-C's HP with Iron Head as it comes in.

Primal Groudon then comes in as Zacian-C reveals Close Combat and Mega Diancie is sacced to Precipice Blades. Necrozma-DM comes in and grabs a free DD as Sami switches to Giratina-O which then gets deleted by LTBTS. Gambit then comes in and revenges it with Sucker Punch. Eternatus comes in and goes for a Fire Blast which gets a burn and probably seals this game. Eternatus does end up sweeping a few turns later.

Additional Thoughts

I do like Banana's team more than Sami's. Its just a standard HO with Mega Diancie to account a bit for Sami's teams these last couple of weeks. I'm a Kingambit believer, but I don't think it tends to fit well on Mola teams as it turns Zacian-C from a mild but managable annoyance to a major issue. This is a bigger deal against HO teams as Alomomola isn't going to have the space to pivot, status, and heal everything. The Arceus forme on this team is already free entry for Zacian-C everytime, but adding another mon that gives it such relatively free entry isn't ideal.

Game 2: 0.5 Mirror v Cyclonez_

I was about to start this writeup and then got the notification for AM's game so decided to that before I got spoiled. Here we have Emoxu9's Webs team v a team I helped with. Her team is defensive Primal Groudon, defensive Ho-Oh, Calm Mind Dragon Tail Arceus-Dark, Coil Tera Fairy Zygarde, wallbreaker Eternatus, and defensive Primal Kyogre.

Matchup [55-45 for Cyclonez]

I'd imagine anyone paying attention at this point can recreate Mirror's team without access to the paste. There isn't really much that has changed. Overall this matchup does favour Cyclonez slightly as Smeargle is Nuzzle Perish Song Mortal Spin so it isn't horrible to play around at the lead. Dragon Tail on Arceus-Dark should end up coming into play and will make it easier to get webs off. The big thing will be Arceus having the right moves. Cyclonez's Zygarde and Primal Kyogre are quite annoying for Mirror to deal with late game.

Game

We see Arceus-Dark lead against Smeargle which trades itself to Nuzzle Arceus-Dark and get webs up. Chi-Yu comes in expecting to setup for free but gets Dragon Tailed out. Arceus is dragged in and Swords Dances as Cyclonez switches to Ho-Oh which is then deleted by +2 Double Edge. Zygarde comes in and Arceus Tera Normals and deletes that as well. It then koes Arceus-Dark before going down to recoil. With a fresh slate we see Primal Kyogre against Yveltal which Calm Minds and Rests which gives Zacian-C free entry. It SDs, gets a lucky dodge and wins.

Additional Thoughts

Mirror hyping up Zacian-C does rub me the wrong way a bit, especially when its often done so, in this game as in others, due to luck. It is a good mon, but with a small sample size and a lot of players just bringing offense which struggles with it, it is going to look a lot better than it is. Same with Arceus. If it was always Zacian-C offense winning against the entire metagame it would be a bit more meaningful than Zacian-C beating the stuff it is supposed to beat.

Game 3: Anchor9 v adpg.2007

We have a good old fashioned webs mirror. Really the biggest question on my mind is why Arceus-Fairy was invited. Some people like using Wisp CM Tera Water on HO, but I've never been much of a fan. Some sort of Calm Mind set makes the most sense. Beyond that the biggest question mark is what tera and coverage Kyurem-B is running and the exact Smeargle set. Anchor9's team is a bit more standard and looks like a normal Sticky Web team. Play Rough TB Ground on the Zacian-C seems most likely.

Matchup [60-40 for Anchor9]

Zacian-C should make Anchor9 slightly more favoured, although it can go either way. If either player wins the webs war they probably win and I'm just hoping this doesn't end with a Shadow Sneak speedtie.

Game

ADPG leads off with Smeargle while Anchor9 leads off with Eternatus. Smeargle then trades itself for webs and Eternatus finishes it off with Meteor Beam. Necrozma-DM comes in and lives a Fire Blast, Dragon Dances and OHKOes Eternatus with Photon Geyser. Anchor9's Smeargle then comes in and Mortal Spins and is brought down to its sash. ADPG then Dragon Dances again and dies to give Kyurem-B free setup. Anchor9 attempts to Spore with Smeargle as Kyurem-B substitutes and forces in Zacian-C. It breaks the sub with Behemoth Blade and then Kyruem-B tera electrics to live the followup and KOes Zacian-C with Fusion Bolt. It is then revenged by Arceus and ADPG's Marshadow fails to OHKO as Arceus manages to get the 2 for 1.

With a fresh slate we see Smeargle Spore Primal Kyogre. Anchor9 then Tera Ghosts and unfortunately misses Poltergeist as Primal Kyogre wakes up early and OHKOes Marshadow with Origin Pulse. Smeargle comes in and chips Primal Kyogre, but it was not in range of Chi-Yu and finishes off the game.

Additional Thoughts

The Poltergeist miss blows, but the game was 100% over there if Low Kick was clicked. It is unlucky, but also there was a safe path to victory. Anchor9 came and asked for a review in discord after the game and was given one by Adem. I don't think I'd have anything to add that she didn't already. It is rough luck for Anchor9 making their debut, but their team was decent and I'm sure they'll get on the board by the time NDFL is over. I think that ADPG's team is a bit too weak to Zacian-C which is hard to overlook on a playstyle that generally doesn't have a great matchup against it at the best of times.

Game 4: Rei v AM

I'm not sure if this is actually one of Bob's Chien-Pao semistalls or just inspired by it. At least the version I'm familiar with is Sucker Punch Chien-Pao, Physical Giratina-O with Sneak, Calm Mind Refresh Arceus-Fairy, defensive Eternatus, phys def Rocky Helmet Alomomola, and Stealth Rock teleport Blissey. If Rei has deviated from it the most likely change is probably going with Thunder Wave Giratina-O over Toxic.

AM's team is somewhat interesting. Replace the Glimmora with Stealth Rock Ultra Necrozma and this would look like something Skimmy would load. My guesses are Double Dance or at least Rock Polish Primal Groudon, Normalium Z Arceus, Dragon Dance Zygarde, Meteor Beam Eternatus, and I'm not so sure about the Zacian-C set.

Matchup [90-10 for AM]

I'd be shocked if this Zygarde isn't Dragon Dance and it is likely to go absolutely stupid if not win outright. It will most likely find a turn somewhere to get a free sub and Dragon Dance. Answering it is going to be a bit difficult for Rei unless Arceus-Fairy happens to be Wisp, which seems unlikely, but given how much this team hates Zacian-C it is plausible. Rei doesn't really handle it outside of hoping Rocks are not up and Alomomola's helmet + Wild Charge chip puts it into Chien-Pao range. It also isn't needed for much of anything here. Arceus and Primal Groudon can both be contained. Rei isn't 6-0'd off the riff, but it is an uphill battle and Chien-Pao probably won't be the hero today.

Game

Rei leads Arceus-Fairy against AM's Glimmora which Taunts, but is predicted and takes a Mortal Spin for its troubles. Eternatus then comes in and is revealed to indeed be defensive. It removes Glimmora, but not before it sets a Spike and lowers Eternatus's Speed. Zacian-C comes in and gets a free SD as Alomomola comes in. AM then opts to Play Rough rather than risking a role and a lot of chip with Wild Charge as Alomomola Flip Turns out into Giratina-O. It then Tera Steels and very unfortunately misses Wisp. This is likely the game. I'm not sure if it was possible anyways, but maybe with a burnt Zacian-C Chien-Pao can do it.

Blissey is sacked to Close Combat, and then Alomomola to get RH chip. AM presumably fearing Shadow Sneak at this point switches into Eternatus which is burnt. It then takes out Rei's Eternatus before being revenged by Chien-Pao. This lets Zacian-C back in and it cleans up and wins the game.

Addtional Comments

Personally I think Zacian-C is quite overhyped and is not as good as its results suggest. Just respecting it means you'll probably be good enough v it, and that wisp miss does suck, but this team is way too damn weak to Zacian-C to rely on that + RH Alomomola. Part of what made Bob's teams with these sets work originally was Ditto preventing Zacian-C from truly getting out of hand. Yeah it was the Zacian-C show, but in all liklihood Zygarde would have blown this team up as well. I'll expand on my thoughts about Zacian-C post NDFL in a metagame discussion post as this isn't really the place.

Been enjoying your analysis reads and you're pretty spot on with the sets, gameplans, etc. Definitely informative and we appreciate it.

Don't want to reveal all the sets but yes Zyg was Ddance with Tera Water so I was quite confident worst case scenario I would win with Zyg in the end. I wanted to CC on the obvious tera Steel with Gira but if it was say, Poison Tera, it would've been bad so I opted to just get the chip on it with Play Rough. I will admit I got very lucky matchup wise and luck wise.

There wasn't too much deep thought with this team it was actually a team I reformatted from SV ubers (below) that I have used in the past that had Pao. It was going to be Pao over Zacian-c but I changed it to Zacian last minute because something like Ekiller would've been an issue.

I predicted the Anchor9 win one week too early, it's actually this week

Predictions aside tho, Anchor is a great player (and friend). The prep and effort he puts into his games is clear, he just needs experience.
Just trust the process fellas
