Natural Gift = Physical Hidden Power

Natural Gift: Type & Power of move varies with Berry held (Physical)

I was looking at the Gimmick thread and saw a set with Natural Gift. I was curious because I remembered the move could be any type and varied in power. Here is how it works:

To make things easy keep this order in mind: Fire, Water, Electric, Grass, Ice, Fighting, Poison, Ground, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Ghost, Dragon, Dark, Steel

Berries 1-16 are 60 power. Berry 1 is Fire type, Berry 2 is Water type and so on. Berry 16 is Steel type.

Berries 17-32 are 70 power. Berry 17 is Fire type, Berry 18 is Water type and so on. Berry 32 is Steel type.

Berries 33-35 are 80 power. Berry 33 is Fire type, Berry 34 is Water type and Berry 35 is Electric type.

Berries 36-52 are 60 power. These are the type damage reduction berries. Their type is the same as the type of damage they reduce. Berry 52 is the only berry that does Normal type damage.

Berries 53-60 are 80 power. Berry 53 is Grass type, Berry 54 is Ice type and so on. Berry 60 is Bug type.

Berry 61-64 still have an unknown effect. Note that there are five types left to complete the 80 power set, but only four berries left.

I thought..."wow, this could open a lot of potential to a lot of Pokemon." Many Physical Pokemon can get that extra move coverage that they needed.

However, there is one cost. The berry is your held item. This could be shunned upon as inferior to Life Orb, Expert Belt, etc..., but I think that some Pokemon wouldn't need those items if they had that extra coverage. Meaning, strong raw Pokemon that don't need an item but rather better coverage.

Discuss.

Berries 61-64 are Rock, Ghost, Dragon, and Dark. There is no 80 base power Steel berry. The main flaw behind Natural Gift is not so much that it takes up an item, but that it is a one-use move. Mispredict and you've just wasted both your item slot and a move slot.

You could use it with Recycle on a few certain Pokemon if you wanted to, but that already uses up two slots...and there aren't many Pokemon who learn both Recycle and have a high enough Attack stat to effectively do that, except Gallade I think, and maybe Medicham.

Besides, you're effectively using a 80 power typed Giga Impact if you rely on Recycle and such. Usually, your STABed move will do more in two turns unless it is 4x resisted.

Yeah, Natural Gift was a great idea until it used up the berry. It's only real function that I can see is against the E4 where you can change the berry as needed to take care of a pokemon with an odd weakness on a given team.

Well, theres that and using it on Drifblim to trigger Unburden. Thats it.

I think for some pokemon an 80 power move of any type (except steel) is a very good thing. If it is a one time use thing, it can still make a difference in a game, for some extremely strong physical attackers, this move can be devastating. Lets say you are using Rhyperior, and you run into a... let's say Starmie. You have Natural Gift Electric, with as high of an attack stat as you can get, can almost guarantee you an OHKO. This can be even game deciding in some cases. Sure it uses up one move slot and an Item slot, but it can cause big pain towards your opponent.

Rhyperior already has Megahorn and Crunch, so Starmie is well-covered. If a Bulky Water comes in, then Rhyperior shouldn't be staying even if he had an 80 BP Grass move. Theres still a possibility for there to not be an OHKO and theres an even greater possibility that you'll get smacked with a STAB Surf before you can get the move off in the first place.

I been using the berry for 80bp Ice and 80bp Grass with relative success with my Ninjask. It feels so good killing a specmence in the middle of the match or that silly swampert at the beginning with an unexpected move like Natural Gift.

How do you determine which Berry you'll use, though?

yea, its kind of hard figuring which one I use. Usually depends on the rest of my team and I try to fill a spot.

I switch around often based on my mood with the 80bp Ice, Grass, Fighting, and to a lesser degree the 80bp Electric or Ground one.

I suppose you can have this act as a very small compensation for Normal types that lost their physical Ghost-slayer options. This is one of the reasons I like D/P over Advance: this is much less cheap than Hidden Power.

I'm not sure how much that'll hold though seeing Dusknoir seems to have usurped Gengar as the most used Ghost as of recent.

Still Natural Gift is a very interesting option especially how some pokemon can Recycle and still get a second charge out of it.

I say Recycle isn't a good option. Its already a one-time use move. Using up yet another moveslot just to make it work again places...too much burden on trying to force it(wording it correctly?)

And once you used that Natural Gift once, be it fail or win. The opponent is going to know what type it is, and will know to avoid/counter it since when you use it, it flashes the color of the type(Grass-Green, Ice-light blue ect..)

Hmm...wouldnt this be good with stuff like Salac Berry? Salac is Electric, and if it does give a speed boost...might be handier in some cases. Specially for Petaya/Liechi and stuff.

Actually theres a minor case where it is feasible. Drifblim. Recycling that berry gives it a chance at reusing it for a boost than Baton Passing it off.

Two berries especially to note at Ganlon and Salac Berry. They give Drifblim a 80 Ice/Fighting respectively and even kick in its Unburden speed boost.

Wouldn't you have used the berry for the speed boost so then you couldn't use it for the attack?

From what I know, Unburden gives a boost the same way Pure Power or Huge Power does, which makes it unpassable.

Honestly, I find it tough to make a Drifblim that takes good advantage of Unburden.

I just tested that claim and found that it's false. No matter what berry I used with Natural Gift, it was always the same color (a pale green).

True that it uses up your berry, but it's pretty unpredictable.
For example, Tricky mentioned KOing a Specsmence with Natural Gift Ice on a Ninjask. It's moments like these that make Natural Gift a great move for a surprise element.

Thats not the point, if Unburden could be passed then Ninjask would have heavy competition. Point is you can still use the berry for an attack in emergency but can recall it for a Baton Pass when necessary.
