Ultra Necrozma (Non-Dragon Dance)

Ultra Necrozma is not just an effective Dragon Dance user, it is also very effective in other roles as well due to the unpredictable nature of its very transformation as well as Photon Geyser's category-swap mechanics! But all we see on ladder are Dragon Dance!
The only established alternative Ultra Necrozma set is Stealth Rock (link here and in title is to analysis) at this time, but it's very effective at crushing the usual Stealth Rock Necrozma-DM counterplay!
Necrozma-Dusk Mane @ Ultranecrozium Z

3A Fairyceus Balance by Brakeseer
3 Attacks Arceus Fairy Balance
By Bad Dreams Rising AKA BrakeSeer

Team breakdown;
:Arceus-Fairy:
Arceus-Fairy @ Pixie Plate
Ability: Multitype
Tera Type: Ground
EVs: 252 SpA / 48 SpD / 208 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Judgment
- Earth Power
- Power Gem
- Recover

This Arceus Fairy is used in a moreunique way than Ioften see, with a 3 attacks move set with recover to stay healthy throughout the game while having the coverage to take sizeable chunks of HP out of common checks like Primal Groudon, Ho-oh, Necrozma-Dusk-Mane, Magearna, Eternatus, Ferrothorn, etc. and use recover to stave off the passive hazard damage that it’s checks use to cripple it in the mid game. It is EVed to outspend Modest offensive Eternatus, and Adamant/Modest max Speed Ultra-Necrozma. The Special Defense EVs are to help it out against Life Orb Yveltal and opposing Arceus forms.

:Zygarde:
Zygarde @ Leftovers
Ability: Power Construct
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Thousand Arrows
- Dragon Tail
- Coil
- Rest

This is a pretty standard Coil Zygarde set with 1 key difference, and that is Dragon Tail over Glare. I feel this is best for the team as speed control isn’t a major issue, and the guaranteed Phazing after a Coil Accuracy boost that Taunt won’t stop is very strong into Stall teams to accumulate Entry Hazard chip much faster than I otherwise could. The even HP stat is to make Power construct activate slightly earlier due to how Pokémon rounds numbers. Tera Water is to help with Primal Kyogre, Calyrex-Ice Rider, and Choice Band Melmetal under Trick Room

:Yveltal:
Yveltal @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Dark Aura
Tera Type: Ghost
EVs: 128 HP / 248 Def / 132 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Foul Play
- U-turn
- Toxic
- Knock Off
This Yveltal set is one I adapted from USUM Ubers, combining the amazing defensive qualities Yveltal has as a Dark and Flying type Pokémon, as well as the sheer power it’s usual Dark Aura boosted Dark Pulses on the Life Orb sets to create a uniquely Bulky Revenge Killer that can provide excellent utility to its team in the form of momentum gain from U-Turn in a meta starved of Pivoting moves, as well as residual chip in the form of Toxic, and the vital Held Item removal from Knock Off all while not sacrificing power thanks to how it’s primary source of damage in Foul Play uses the opponent’s Attack stat in the damage calculation which can even result in more damage than a regular Yveltal ever could. The Defense EVs get more use in the Defence stat as the output comes out to a larger % increase than HP until they share one value, and the HP EVs are there to maximize physical bulk while maintaining 5 rounds of Stealth Rock chip requirement to knock out Yveltal from full health, with enough speed to outrun Deoxys-Attack. Tera Ghost is for E Killers trying to sweep late-game

:Ho-oh:
Ho-Oh @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Regenerator
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 248 HP / 204 Def / 56 SpD
Impish Nature
- Sacred Fire
- Toxic
- Defog
- Whirlwind
Standard Ho-oh sets are standard for a reason, and I don’t feel the need to explain why adding an Entry Hazard Removal option is a good idea. You know what Ho-oh does, but damn does Ho-oh do it well.

:Groudon-Primal:
Groudon @ Red Orb
Ability: Drought
Tera Type: Ground
EVs: 248 HP / 68 Def / 192 SpD
Impish Nature
- Spikes
- Earthquake
- Rock Tomb
- Toxic
Another self explanatory addition as Primal-Groudon is an excellent defensive check for the tier, dishes out massive damage with its Ground Type Attacks, be it Precipice Blades or Earthquake, sets up Entry Hazards and can cripple opponents with Toxic all while throwing out Rock Tombs to slow you down for a follow up attack. What’s not to love?

:Necrozma-Dusk-Mane:
Necrozma-Dusk-Mane @ Ultranecrozium Z
Ability: Prism Armor
Tera Type: Psychic
EVs: 40 Def / 216 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Photon Geyser
- Earth Power
- Dragon Pulse
This Necrozma set is quite unorthodox but its prowess cannot be denied. It does a good job getting up Stealth Rocks as it scares out a lot of Pokémon which can offer it a bunch of free turns over the course of a game. The layers of mind games don’t end there, as now that the opponent has seen Necrozma-Dusk-Mane use Stealth Rock they assume that the Necrozma is a wall since fast and frail Pokémon often cannot afford to use Hazards due to the threat of being One Hit K.O.ed, potentially leaving in something like a Palkia-O to try and muscle through it only to watch it transform and outrun and knock out Palkia-O in a single hit. This lends a major boon to our team as well in unpredictability, something that can make the opponent overthink and make mistakes. Necrozma doesn’t just rely on surprise factor as it is a very powerful attacker in its own right especially when paired with this teams new Arceus Fairy set can dismantle teams leaving gaping holes the team can tear wide open with Zygarde and Yveltal. Overall a great team I am proud to submit to the team building competition

this may or may not be the same team that i used in the 17th round of the comp

STEALTH ROCK ULTRA NECROZMA OFFENSE
:sv/necrozma-ultra: :sv/groudon-primal: :sv/ho-oh: :sv/arceus-fairy: :sv/kyogre-primal: :sv/ferrothorn:

Ultra Necrozma is a pretty cool hazard setter. It running hazards lets Primal Groudon run more offensive sets like this Bulky Swords Dance set I'm using, while it and Ho-Oh also help versus Fairy-types like Zacian-C. Dragon Tail on Primal Groudon lets it punish Zygarde and Giratina-O switchins while also preventing Ho-Oh from Whirlwinding it out. This Ho-Oh I'm using is just the offensive set, but with Tera Grass to handle Dragon Dance Zygarde a bit better. Arceus-Fairy solves this team's Marshadow weakness, with Tera Dark to handle Ultra Necrozma and Lunala a bit better, while Primal Kyogre is good at making progress against fatter teams and Stall. Finally, Ferrothorn has its EVs to avoid the 2HKO against +1 Ultra Necrozma's Earthquake, letting it soft-check it in a way while avoiding being complete setup fodder against it, while also being a good Primal Kyogre, Arceus-Water and NDM switch-in. Tera Water is preferred to beat Trick Room more easily and to handle offensive Primal Groudon better.

Honestly not really sure what playstyle this would be considered? Probably balance, but it kinda feels like BO as well. Can't remember exactly when I made this, but it would have been sometime around the beginning or just before NDPL. The team definitely needs some refining, but I don't have the time this week to do that.

Cycle 30: Chi-Yu

:sv/chi-yu:
The next mon we shall flood the ladder and tournaments with is Chi-Yu!

It's mainly seen on Sticky Web teams to act as a devastating wallbreaker and sweeper with Darkinium Z. Its Speed tier lets it outspeed Yveltal—otherwise a huge bother for the archetype—with ease, and its moveset can be really difficult to handle, especially given almost nothing can handle +2 Black Hole Eclipse, which is basically +6 Dark Pulse, and threaten it properly. Choice Scarf, Heavy-Duty Boots, and Choice Specs are also potential options.

I'm extending submissions for Chi-Yu to Thursday 12/26 11:59pm -8
It's been brought to my attention that inconsistency in cycle times is causing problems for some people; as such, in the future, I will try to always start cycles on Fridays and end cycles on Thursdays, with a week for voting while the next poll is up.

As a reminder, you can DM Zrp200 or any other member of the council if you have anything you'd like to see featured here.

Note that submissions do not have to be perfect or even close to optimal. This is a forum for exploring underused or otherwise interesting sets; all teams* are welcome.
* For legal reasons, I must clarify that teams including Focus Sash Marshadow and Pokemon not currently ranked on the VR without heavy justification will not be tolerated, and violators may be shown the door. Thank you for your understanding.

Personal Submissions

To kickstart things, I'm submitting two teams.

:chi-yu::kyogre-primal::zacian-crowned::zekrom::yveltal::smeargle: Darkinium Z Chi-Yu + Zekrom Webs

This one uses the base of a popular enough webs core and opts to use zekrom to put more pressure on Ho-Oh, Primal Kyogre, and Yveltal.

:chi-yu::kyogre-primal::zacian-crowned::arceus-dark::groudon-primal::ho-oh: Scarf Chi-Yu + Defensive Primal Kyogre Offense

....and here's one that uses Tera Blast Fairy Scarf Chi-Yu that I just vomited out.

Tera Blast Fairy is intended to hit Yveltal, Arceus-Dark, Tera Dragon Eternatus, etc that otherwise may end up being problematic. Kyogre easily sits on many mons that otherwise may try to absorb chi-yu's attacks. Virtually all the teammates here appreciate Chi-Yu's ability to threaten Marshadow, but Chi-Yu's ability to revenge kill Zacian-C and its general tendency to put chip on important targets make it very much not a wasted slot here.

Smeargle-Chi-Yu HO
:Smeargle: :Eternatus: :Zacian-crowned: :Arceus: :Marshadow: :chi-yu:
Paste

Used this Week 4 of NDFL except Smeargle was Stone Axe instead of Perish Song. Pretty standard Web team. Smeargle leads with webs and the rest do be sweeping. This team is pretty Ditto-proof, with the Arceus + Marshadow priority core and Tera Fairy Eternatus. Chi-Yu is here for any stall and serves as a soft Yveltal check. Etern is a very good breaker and deals with Toxic Spikes + Yveltal. Zacian-C is Zacian-C.

TRIPLE FIRE CHOICE SPECS CHI YU BALANCE

:sv/chi-yu: :sv/groudon-primal: :sv/ho-oh: :sv/arceus-fairy: :sv/zygarde: :sv/marshadow:

Choice Specs Chi Yu is a great clicker against a lot of the tier due to its fantastic neutral coverage. Dark Pulse is a very spammable STAB move against Zygarde, Arceus-Water, Primal Kyogre and Mega Salamence, with Fire Blast shredding Arceus-Fairy/Dark, Zacian-C and Yveltal on the switch. Overheat is used also to 2HKO Defensive Primal Groudon and Calm Mind Arceus-Dark consecutively while also OHKOing defensive Yveltal. Psychic primarily hits defensive Eternatus. Tera Dark bolsters this power, letting Chi Yu 2HKO Ho-Oh, defensive Primal Kyogre and defensive Eternatus while OHKOing Rayquaza, specially offensive Yveltal and Primal Groudon after Stealth Rock.

Primal Groudon is needed to beat Ho-Oh, Arceus-Fairy and Zacian-C more easily for Chi Yu to spam its STAB freely, while Ho-Oh does a similar thing with additional hazard support. Arceus-Fairy helps against a potential Zygarde weakness alongside Tera Grass Ho-Oh, with Zygarde itself being needed to prevent Primal Groudon from cleaving through too easily; finally, Marshadow forms a strong offensive core with Chi Yu while revenge-killing threats like Arceus and Ultra Necrozma that may try to brute force through Zygarde and the team - Chi Yu may also unexpectedly let Ultra Necrozma setup by being locked into Fire Blast/Overheat.

Cycle 31 Fezandipiti

1735959227803.png

:Sv/fezandipiti:
See bumboclaat's VR nomination essay post explaining what this does and how it's used for a deeper understanding, but TLDR Fezandipiti is able to compress a Yveltal check, an Eternatus check, a specially defensive pivot, a Toxic spreader (thanks to its ability), and a Toxic Spikes absorber all in one slot.

Code:
Fezandipiti @ Leftovers
Ability: Toxic Chain
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 248 HP / 44 Def / 216 SpD
Calm Nature
- U-turn
- Roost
- Moonblast
- Acid Spray
The spread almost always avoids getting 3HKOed by Life Orb Yveltal's Oblivion Wing with Leftovers knocked off, while the Defense investment allows it to take attacks up to Tera Ghost Choice Band Marshadow's Spectral Thief from full HP. Acid Spray paired with a wallbreaker like Deoxys-A lets Fez beat basically all CM arcs, and thanks to Toxic Chain, it can also apply Toxic!

There's also a variant of this that has Play Rough + Toxic (pinging Bobsican)

Submissions are open until Friday 1/10!

Team Background

The above image is from August 28 and I started thinking about Fezandipiti sometime July. As Zrp mentioned, I made a VR nom a couple of weeks ago explaining the thought process behind Fezandipiti. If you're interested in it read that as there isn't really anything I have to say about Fezandipiti that wasn't said there except kudos to Zrp200 for finding that Marshadow calc because I didn't. Even though I started tinkering around with Fezandipiti in July I don't think I got around to making a team with it until sometime in September during NDPL. At the time I made three variants - one with each of Deoxys-A, Marshadow, and Chien-Pao. The Deoxys-A version ended up being the best, but the Marshadow version was alright as well. I'm not sure how much experimentation there is to be had as Fezandipiti does kind of specific things and provides specific support even if these are valuable. The Chien-Pao build I made was a failure, but I think there is potential there, it just needs tinkering rather than slapping Chien-Pao in on the last slot. I think Choice Specs Eternatus probably works as well if someone wants to use that. Also shoutout to R8 because I'm pretty sure Fez was their idea not Adem's. We still miss the shitmon connoisseur everyday.

Team Members / Roles

:pmd/groudon-primal: Used the 140+ Def normally found on SD Utility Primal Groudon as with all of Fezandipiti, Arceus-Dark, and Deoxys-A the extra EVs are really needed for Zacian-C. It also helps against Dragon Dance Necrozma-DM which otherwise tends to be quite annoying. 60 Atk 2HKOes defensive Primal Kyogre after Stealth Rock although they could all be up into SpA to OHKO LO Yveltal with Overheat or just dumped into SpD. 44 SpD makes defensive Primal Kyogre Ice Beam 4HKO and survives Arceus-Ground Judgment after Stealth Rock. 16 Speed outspeeds paralyzed Eternatus.

:pmd/ho-oh: I'll call this standard offensive Ho-Oh at this point as this will end up being the dex spread. I wanted Thunder Wave on Ho-Oh as a backup option against Zacian-C and Eternatus as this team would prefer that Ho-Oh paralyzes them as opposed to Zygarde. Tera Fairy Zygarde means Dragon Dance Zygarde and Primal Groudon should not be an issue so Ho-Oh thudding into those is fine. Brave Bird does more than enough to Primal Groudon on the switch.

:pmd/arceus-dark: Like Ho-Oh, soon to be standard EVs. SpD lets you setup on wallbreaker Eternatus from full, but with Fezandipiti a max/max or more mixed spread may be slightly better (248 HP / 92 Def / 16 SpA / 52 SpD / 100 Spe or 248 HP / 112 Def / 4 SpA / 52 SpD / 96 Spe). It is Arceus-Dark and does the typical Arceus-Dark things of checking various teambuilding checkboxes. Ultra Necrozma and LO Yveltal counterplay / Taunt user / win condition that is self sufficent but also synergizes with the team ect. Don't really see another Arceus forme slotting in easily at with the direction this style of team wants to go. With balance teams you are usually picking between Arceus-Dark or Arceus-Fairy and it is hard to see Arceus-Fairy work with Fezandipiti unless it is Tera Dark Will-O-Wisp.

:pmd/zygarde: This team definitely wants Tera Fairy Zygarde as it is otherwise weak to Dragon Dance Zygarde. Dragon Tail provides nice phazing and helps relieve some of the defensive pressure off of Zygarde in a lot of matchups. Speed is just for mons trying to Speed creep Zygarde. 248 HP 212+ Def / 44 SpD / 4 Spe works as well. This lets it survive 252 SpA Dynamax Cannon and 208+ Def is the magic number for Zygarde to survive what it needs to on the physical side. Although the secondary spread is great, I'm not sure it is great for this team. Outside of Zygarde it is a bit physically squishy even with the more physically defensive Primal Groudon than usual. A little wiggle room never hurts and Zygarde is rarely needing to deal with Eternatus on this team.

:pmd/fezandipiti: See here again. Went with Tera Grass over Tera Dark to provide backup against the occasional Calm Mind Arceus-Ground and Arceus-Water. Tera Dark works, but Fezandipiti needs 72 SpA to cleanly 2HKO Ultra Necrozma and this sort of team does not tend to have the time to set Stealth Rock against HO. I do still think Tera Dark is usable, but as a backup to whatever the proper Ultra Necrozma counterplay happens to be. 248 HP / 52 Def / 208 SpD does avoid the 2HKO from any attack with Tera Dark, but this is more theorymon as in practice Ultra Necrozma is always going to be at +1 anyways. 248 HP / 48 Def / 212 SpD lets it survive +1 Earthquake after Stealth Rock and a layer of Spikes.

:pmd/deoxys-attack: I'm still not really sure what the best last two moves are for Deoxys-A. The team definitely still wants Tera Ghost for Ekiller in case it bops Zygarde with Double-Edge. Beyond that I don't really know. I intially wanted Tera Blast Ghost but didn't feel Deoxys-A terad enough for that to be worth it. Ice Beam and/or Extreme Speed in one of those two slots is probably worth considering. I did think about Icy Wind for a bit, but this team does not benefit from slowing down Zacian-C with Deoxys-A and Yveltal isn't a problem.

Replays

Entro v Rarh2 (NDBD)

Edit: Forgot Arceus-Dark and expanded slightly on Fezandipiti

So... like this?

FEZANDIPITI + CHIEN PAO BULKY OFFENSE

:sv/fezandipiti: :sv/groudon-primal: :sv/zygarde: :sv/necrozma-dusk-mane: :sv/giratina-origin: :sv/chien-pao:

I think Chien Pao is a better partner than Deoxys-A is for Fezandipiti and that's because the original two doesn't do very nicely into Necrozma-DM; sure Deoxys-A has Shadow Ball but NDM can easily trade with it and at that point your left with banking on Zygarde or Arceus-Dark to eat a Z-Move which isn't ideal. Granted it can also trade with Chien Pao but it has to be fully-healthy and Chien Pao doesn't need to burn Tera as frequently as Deoxys-A does to revenge-kill it. Primal Groudon helps handle Ho-oh and Zacian-C for the team like it usually does while Zygarde helps versus any other physical threat, notably Marshadow and opposing Primal Groudon. Necrozma-DM helps soft-check Zacian-C, Eternatus and Deoxys-A while also appreciating the free pivot against Arceus-Fairy for setup from Fezandipiti. Finally, Giratina-O is hazard removal, and I opted for physical since Zygarde is already my Primal Groudon answer, and Dragon Tail is just a good move to have - Thunder Wave also helps Chien Pao break more easily.

:fezandipiti::landorus-therian::chien-pao::giratina-origin::alomomola::arceus-dark:Fezandipiti + Landorus-T Balance

Rather similar to Sami's team structure, but with a key lack of :groudon-primal:Primal Groudon leading to a rather different game plan.
The team provides significantly more entry points for :chien-pao:Chien-Pao to do war crimes by having three pivots, with :landorus-therian:Landorus-T in particular earning a spot to easily handle the :zacian-crowned:Zacian-C matchup as well as easing playing around :zygarde:Zygarde when a safe pivot for :arceus-dark:Arceus-Dark is required without enabling setup opportunities for it (lol Intimidate). The rest of the team handles comfortably the rest of the physically offensive metagame, with :fezandipiti:Fezandipiti providing crucial role compression to handle CM Arceus formes with Taunt, Eternatus, Primal Kyogre (thank Utility Umbrella avoiding a 2HKO from max investment Origin Pulse) and to a lesser degree Yveltal (as Arceus-Dark also checks that).

As Acid Spray is ueless when all its allies are physical, I can afford a more physically oriented set, granting slightly more chip damage when attacking, and also fitting Toxic when it's desirable to ensure a poisoning on a foe than having to keep the long game with Toxic Chain and hoping it triggers. :giratina-origin:Giratina-O can also be customized to use an specially offensive set, and then a more standard :fezandipiti:Fezandipiti set as well, but that's more up to taste and can also work. In any case Tera Dark is picked for the bird as the team is rather weak to :deoxys-attack:Deoxys-A and :mewtwo-mega-y:Mega Mewtwo Y.
