Welcome to NDOU's latest and greatest project: Blast from the Past! In this project, we'll be going down memory lane by revisiting cores and strategies from past generations that found success in competitive play. We'll be using this lesson in Pokemon history to kickstart building modernized versions of these cores/teams to fit the current NDOU metagame.

Process:
  • The hosts will post a core/team from a past generation (Gen 8 NDOU/Gen 7 OU and prior) metagame with a description of its impact in the generation of its conception, as well as how it works.
  • The community will then have a week to nominate the team that demonstrates the best adaptation of the original core/team. Each person may nominate one team per week.
  • Remember to include a description of the team and how it works.
  • There will then be a two day voting period in which users can vote on the team that they believe is the best.
  • Once the voting period has concluded, the team with the highest number of votes will be added to the archive. A new set will then be posted.
Rules:
  • You must post a team and an explanation of how your team preserves the integrity of the original core/team while also being effective in the current metagame. Damage calculations are appreciated but not required.
  • If you feel that you must replace a Pokemon that is fundamental to the core, please be sure to explain why.
  • While the general rule of thumb is to stick to using Pokemon found in the NDOU Viability Rankings, the nature of this project may force you to work with Pokemon that are not listed in the VR. Therefore, we will not discourage you from using Pokemon that are NOT found in the VR.
  • You are welcome to reserve a team, but please do so only if you plan on completing the submission.
  • Do NOT ask anyone for votes, offer votes, exchange votes, or try to manipulate the voting in any way. You should vote for the team that is the most effective for each round. You are NOT allowed to vote for your own submission.
  • Have fun :D!

First up in Blast from the Past we have... Psyspam Offense!

:sm/Tapu Lele: :sm/Alakazam-Mega:
SM OU Psyspam Offense

Background

Generation 7 introduced the terrain mechanic that kicked things off for our first generation of Psyspam offense. While Psyspam later diverged into Hyper Offense playstyles supported by Indeedee, Hatterene, and Polteageist starting in Generation 8, Tapu Lele and Mega Alakazam comprised the original core of Psyspam offense.

With Psychic Terrain increasing the power of Psychic-type moves by 50% for a grounded user back in Generation 7, Tapu Lele was a force to be reckoned with as it was tremendously difficult to switch into thanks to its sky high Special Attack stat and phenomenal coverage. Furthermore, with the ability to prevent grounded Pokemon from being hit by moves with increased priority, Tapu Lele provided valuable support to faster, frailer teammates such as Mega Alakazam, who not only took advantage of the boost to its Psychic-type moves, but no longer had to fear being revenge killed by the likes of Bisharp's Sucker Punch and Ash-Greninja's Water Shuriken.

Frequent collaborators of Psyspam

:sv/Hawlucha: :sm/Victini: :sm/Medicham-Mega: :sm/Gallade-Mega:

Defensive checks in the form of Assault Vest Magearna, and revenge killers such as Choice Scarf Landorus-T became cornerstones of the SM OU metagame thanks in part to the influence of Psyspam. While Mega Alakazam was a considerable threat on its own thanks to its absurdly high stats and offensive coverage, the tandem formed with Tapu Lele defined a generation of teambuilding that could not afford to ignore this team archetype if they wanted a chance to win.

Team Spotlight

SM OU: BTB Ayevon Psyspam Offense (RMT)
:sm/Alakazam-Mega: :sm/Tapu Lele: :sm/Kartana: :sm/Greninja-Ash: :sm/Landorus-Therian: :sm/Magearna:

How can you make Psyspam work in today's metagame?

With Mega Alakazam getting the boot in Generation 8 thanks to gaining Expanding Force and Nasty Plot, Psyspam offense took a big hit. Now down a cornerstone of the team archetype, and with the current metagame being run by Kingambit and Dragapult, while introducing the likes of Gholdengo, is it even possible to achieve success with Psyspam today?

Submissions end on Sunday, April 9th at 23:59 GMT-5.

Check out Whole Lotta Agent's latest video featuring the teams from this submission!

Going to work on av lele z-celebrate victini dd kyurem core

:ss/Tapu Lele: :ss/Victini: :ss/Kyurem:
Edit: Ok my team is complete (very lazily done after cheesing with rocks + brick break maw but I decided to cheese even further now with Garg)

:ss/Tapu Lele: :ss/Victini: :ss/Kyurem: :sv/Kingambit: :ss/Landorus-Therian: :sv/Garganacl:
  • AV Lele is great support for offense with Future Sight and great for bluffing choice locked sets while being able to eat hits from strong special attackers like Iron Valiant. You folks know what tera psychic does. EV spread hits 270 speed to swag on Rilla but this can be tweaked. Focus is to max HP and dump rest into special attack.
  • Z-Celebrate Victini: THE BREAKER/WINCON. Victini does NOT care about your Unaware users and WILL decimate your defensive core. Might even force your opp to tera to preserve their precious Toxapex. But this team was crafted to take care of Toxapex so the tera will be in vain...
  • Tera Fairy DD Kyurem: Bro is very bulky with the def investment. Very solid pressure stall lad that cleans in the end game after the team removes bulky waters and steels. Tera Fairy to swag on fighting types like MLop and Zama who think they have any business against this certified goober. HP to preserve sub against stoss/nshade, speed to outspeed Mlop at +1 although you can bring it up for Zama (I will be voting ban so I hope this buster is gone soon), got SpDef to reach 300 for no apparent reason but this monster eats a ton of special hits, rest dumped into def.
  • Rocks 3a dark Kingambit: Listen here folks, Kingambit does NOT need Iron Head. All it needs is the holy trinity of dark type moves: Knock, Pursuit, Sucker. Last slot is flexible. While AV also would've been nice to support offense, I need a rocker, and unlike Michael213 you will never catch me running rocks+fog Lando. Tweak speed to your liking. Tera ghost to swag on fighting types like Valiant and fighting coverage from Lele.
  • Scarf Lando: I am not a fan of defensive fog lando cuz I think it's too passive, hence scarf Lando. Good speed control, remove hazards in a pinch, and explodes after a short day at work. Tera water if ur scared of water types. Def scarf lando yea he don't really need the off invest u still OHKO Zard Y with no invest lol.
  • Tera Water Garg: In need of a status absorber? BETTER CALL SALT! In need of a rain check? BETTER CALL SALT! In need of a ghost resist? BETTER CALL SALT! Need something to cheese bulky waters and steels? BETTER CALL SALT! In need of a mon with zero counterplay aside from an article of clothing? BETTER CALL SALT! Hi I'm Salt GoodPokeman and if you're in need of a mon that facilitates brainless play, CALL NOW AT 1-800-SLT-CURE!
How to use: Psyspam is an offensive core so play aggressively, sack liberally.

Comments: Lele Vic Garg somewhat fit the Lele Zam Magearna core used by BTB and Ayevon in that Garg just carries every defensive core the way Magearna does in Gen 7. Kingambit + Garg patch up the Psyspam core's weakness to Pult, Kingambit and Gholdengo. Fighting types may appear to be threatening here but can often be turned into setup fodder by Victini, as well as Tera from Kyurem and Garg.

psy+ghost spam ft. iron treads lead

:sv/gallade-mega: :sv/tapu-lele: :sv/victini: :sv/dragapult: :sv/gholdengo: :sv/iron-treads:

:gallade-mega: NDRU's unsung hero. jk they finally banned this shit thank god. this thing hits like a truck at 165 base atk. you can SD on would-be switchins and then OHKO them. incredibly potent breaker but it sucks that zenbutt seems to miss more than stone edge. w/ terrain up u threaten gambit ez and at +2 threaten an OHKO on msciz, skarm, corv, garg. u can run knock > taxel too.
:tapu-lele: enabler of the team + speed control + general badass. im not putting fsight on this because the team has to move faster than that and clicking shadow ball and tbolt is cooler than focus blast and fsight. run psyshock if you want idc
:victini: z-celebrate vic w/ terrain is broken and is an easy wincon
:dragapult: tapu lele + dragapult (+ weavile) is my favorite off core from gen 8 ou. tera ghost pult is broken and i love spamming shadow ball if you couldn't tell
:gholdengo: standard set. improves matchups vs opposing lele/psyspam, rain, wake, and garg which are huge threats. you're probably only ever teraing this vs rain/wake, and otherwise clicking broken adapt STAB on lele/pult.
:iron-treads: i'm obsessed with suicide lead iron treads lmao this shit is too funny. steel beam is great for surprise chip/KOs and denying defog alongside dengo. counters glimmora and is nice vs grimmsnarl which i appreciate.

pastebin: https://pastebin.com/PMwTJeKJ

:tapu lele::
Terrain setter, also a breaker in its own right, enables the rest of the team
:alakazam::
The single best abuser of Terrain. Expanding Force hits like a truck, ohkoing :charizard-mega-y: after tera, ohkoing :diancie-mega: without tera, with focus blast to take out :kingambit: and other relevant darks/mons that try to trap you. Counter lets you trade with :ting-lu: and pursuit :kingambit: (even if it teras), while also being good into most physical attackers, so its a staple here. Nasty Plot means that you break past special walls, ohkoing offensive :gholdengo: at +2, and even ohkoing :chansey: and :blissey: at +4.

:polteageist::
The second best abuser of Terrain. Also baits Darks and opens up teammates like :alakazam: and :hatterene: to spam Expanding Force late game. You guys know what this does.

:volcarona::
stupid strong mon, doesn't even need tera, which is good because :polteageist: and :alakazam: are super tera hungry. Buginium Z lets you ohko through tanky fire resists like :garchomp: and :ting-lu:, which just being incredibly strong when paired with Swarm.

:hatterene::
the glue to this team, preventing hazards from going up, neutering mons like :gholdengo:, :heatran:, and :kingambit: by using nuzzle, and being a breaker by spamming expanding force. You can hard switch this to pivot :alakazam: or :volcarona: in.

:kartana::
flex slot for the team, not really sure exactly what to fit, but it acts as speed control, while also providing a way to clean late game in case the sweepers don't clean through, pressuring :rillaboom: teams, and also acting as an emergency fast defogger to enable :volcarona: and :polteageist:, who rely on a lack of hazards to sweep.

Fun little psyspam, Trailblaze MMedi can absolutely rock certain bulky offenses and offenses in the late game and even if it can't sweep its still Mega Medicham so its gonna punch some holes. AV Tapu Lele gives more bulk to the team. Gambit provides necessary Pursuit support, Low Kick is great as a Gambit lure and it hits some other steels, you almost never click Iron Head anyway so whatever. Scarl Fini/Lando-T/Gholdengo is a surprisingly solid trio that covers a lot of otherwise troublesome Pokemon, Scarf Fini is great role compression with Defog, Trick is a nice option to have against fat Stored Power boosters, and on a team like this it works as a passable defogger. Lando is a great option as a rocker, and fat Ghold covers a ton while being a good backup wincon. Cloak is for Gargler.

ZAMN! SPECS ft TERA BLAST SUB HEX PULT
:ss/tapu-lele::ss/alakazam::ss/heatran::ss/rotom-wash::ss/great-tusk::ss/dragapult:

warning before, its a fun team, its not meant to be used in tournament games or to be good.
rather simple, specs zam hits absurdely hard and can open the path for lele. Tran is the classic spd grass set, works r well, rotom is waterium + wisp although cld be twave, ebutton tusk serves here in case of Corv mu, you click CC to immediately force chips and get the momentum against a corv weakened, tera poison for koko + tspikes mu, and finally pult, who's there for forcing gambit to tera or to bait ttar, although you don't really need to lure the latter as usually ttar teams tends to be lele food. this has a good fat/balanced mu, and also does works vs offense, as ppl will often be scared of the sash on zam, meaning you can force trades v easily. Keep in mind, however, when they will want to trade the sash for a mon and don't play recklessly.

:ss/Tapu Lele: :sm/Hoopa-Unbound: :bw/Landorus-Therian: :sv/Kingambit: :ss/Ferrothorn: :sv/Garganacl:

Fun team centered around Psychium Z Hoopa-Unbound.
Scarf Tapu Lele provides the team with decent speed control & powers up Hoopa-U & its Z-move.
Hoopa-Unbound is one of my favourite breakers in the entire game. Nasty Plot raises its SpAtk to frightening levels, making this thing an absolute menace & impossible to switch into under terrain.
Defensive Landorus-Therian gives the team a reliable defogger & a check to the tier's myriad of physically offensive threats.
Kingambit provides Pursuit support to eliminate dangerous threats such as Dragapult, Gholdengo & opposing Lele. It can also take advantage of the hazard stacking in the late game to become a wincon.
Ferrothorn is the team's rain check & provides the team with spikes support.
This particular Garganacl is something I've been messing around with for a while & has been super fun to snipe unsuspectig victims with.
The team doesn't deal well with Charizard-Y at all, apart from Hoopa-U eating a hit & OHKOing back with the Z-move or maybe putting it in range of Sucker Punch from Kingambit later on.
Tera Dragon is something unique I've been trying out to surprise the opponent once Garg has been chipped in range of being knocked out by Zard-Y.

:ss/tapu-lele::ss/alakazam::ss/heatran::ss/rotom-wash::ss/great-tusk::ss/dragapult:

warning before, its a fun team, its not meant to be used in tournament games or to be good.
rather simple, specs zam hits absurdely hard and can open the path for lele.

Tera Dragon is something unique I've been trying out to surprise the opponent once Garg has been chipped in range of being knocked out.

Casting my vote for Chris's Reuniclus psyspam bc it's the only team in this thread with a Garg check Reuni checks Garg AND gets to hold a Life Orb (very cool technology) Mamoo's team because Tera Dragon Garg is too shiest and Hoopa-U is the bane of my existence.

I think all the submissions are really cool, but I'll vote for taka's - even though it's a really cheesy take on it lol. Kinda surprised this is the only submission here that clearly has taken inspiration from the svou hatt psyspams

I might change my vote later cuz I still want to toy with the other teams a bit more

Next up in Blast from the Past we have... DragMag!

:bw/Magnezone: :bw/Garchomp: :bw/Latios:
BW OU DragMag

Background

Prior to the introduction of the Fairy typing, Dragon types were among the most fearsome pokemon to grace the competitive scene. With a whopping single resistance courtesy of the Steel typing, there was not much that stood in their way. Though they're only able to deal super effective damage to their own kind, Dragon types were a force to be reckoned with thanks to their solid defensive profile, high base power STABs, robust coverage, and the fact that many were legendaries or pseudolegendaries! Rather than eliminating their checks through skillful play, what better way to complement a team of Dragon types than with a pokemon that forcibly traps and eliminates their only resistance for them? Just slap everyone's favorite magnet on your team of Dragons and eliminate pesky Skarmory, Ferrothorn and Scizor with ease.

While DragMag has no shortage of stopping power, it is an offensive playstyle with a limited defensive backbone, meaning other offenses can prove to be a challenge. Excadrill sand in particular is a massive threat, as Excadrill turns Magnezone into setup fodder and threatens to sweep in subsequent turns. Likewise, screens offenses provide a stronger safety net for their setup sweepers, which help beating DragMag sweepers to the punch.

All things considered, bulky team archetypes ranging from bulky offense to stall were forced into a 50/50 each time they considered switching their bulky steel in to tank a move from a Dragon type when playing against DragMag. Call your opponent's double into Magnezone correctly and your bulky steel lives to see another turn. If not, buckle up for what's in store because the end is surely near.

How can you make DragMag work in today's metagame?

While movepools for the Dragons have continued to improve since Generation 5, DragMag has fallen off with the prevalence of the Fairy typing. That being said, with the current lack of defensive fairies in today's metagame, and perhaps a very Balanced Type Changing Mechanic Terastallization at your disposal for now, can DragMag once again prove to be a threat?

Constraints

Your submission must have the following elements:
  • A pokemon with Magnet Pull it doesn't even need to have Magnet Pull for the juicy bluff
  • 3 Dragon Types minimum
