Original Post was taken from Monotype's Core Laddering Challenge

Welcome to the National Dex Monotype Core Laddering Challenge Thread! The Core Laddering Challenge obviously involves laddering...with a core! Seeing as this is the National Dex Monotype Core Laddering challenge, we will be laddering on the National Dex Monotype ladder on Pokemon Showdown!. It is a competition encompassing multiple elements of competitive play: teambuilding, adapting, and battling! Various types will get a core every week, but you will have a little over a week to ladder with the core in order to achieve a Hall of Fame rank. After you've gotten the core, it's time to teambuild! The only restriction is that you'll have to use the Pokemon in the core; you may decide the move-sets, EVs and items yourself, as well as the partners.

Overview of Challenge Rules
by Sly Mav/Rum & Coke

  • To register, reply to the challenge you are participating in with the following information: Your Username, and your Laddering Alt (which must have the required tag)
  • To apply for a Hall of Fame level, state your Username, your Laddering Alt, the HoF Level you are applying for, and proof (i.e. Replays, Screenshots, ect)
  • While you are laddering on your CC alt, you are only allowed to use a CC team, which corresponds with the CC tag of your alt. If you are found to have broken this rule on purpose, you will be disqualified. You must use the correct CC tag (CCXxN) as specifed, if you wish to be eligible for the Hall of Fame (HoF). Failure to do so, will render your challenge invalid.
  • Asking your opponent for a free win or asking your opponent to forfeit is STRICLY PROHIBITED. Anyone caught doing this will be disqualified from competing in the Core Challenges.
  • It is strictly prohibited to share an account with another user, so that they may ladder for you. If caught you will be disqualified from competing in the Core Challenges.
  • Your CC team must contain the 2 members of the core at all times. You are free to change the other 4 members of your team as you wish, however.
Beginner's Guide to the Core Ladder Challenge
by Sly Mav/Rum & Coke

  • Step 1: Choose a core that you wish to compete with, observing what the CC tag for that core is. CC tags have a format of "CCXxN" [CC=Core Challenge; Xx=Type, N= The Cycle/Round of the type]. So for example, "CCWa2" is the 2nd cycle/round of the Water type cores.
  • Step 2: Create an alternate account ("alt" for short) using the CC tag. For example: "CCWa2 YourName"
  • Step 3: Reply to the challenge in which you want to participate in, and provide your Username, and the Laddering Alt you will be using. Your PS Username is your regular account and the CC alt is the alternate account you just created.
  • Step 4: Build a Monotype team, which includes the two (2) pokemon listed in the Core you're doing. Please note carefully whether the Pokemon in the core are capable of Mega Evolution and whether or not they must hold their Mega Stone, as specified.
  • Step 5: When you are sure that your team is ready, log into your CC alt and begin battling on the Monotype Ladder.
  • Step 6: When you reach a milestone ELO, for example 1500 ELO for the "Silver" rank, save the replay and submit the link in the thread for proof.
  • Step 7: If you reach the "Platinum" rank of 1700 ELO, save the replay of each new ELO peak that you achieve which is greater than the listed HoF level. Before the challenge ends, submit the replay that shows your highest overall peak. The Top Finisher of each Core is the person with the highest ELO peak overall, in a submitted replay.
Do not cheat in this challenge! It is a global PS! offense to boost your ladder ranking. Within the confines of this challenge, this includes asking opponents to forfeit so you don't lose ELO.
People caught boosting their ELO in any way will be disqualified. No exceptions, you've been warned.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use more than one type in each challenge?

Yes, just make sure you have a tagged alt for each one.

When can I start laddering?
As soon as you post in the challenge thread here on Smogon, you can start laddering.

Do I need to save/submit all my replays?
NO! Please submit replays that show you reaching a Hall of Fame level, or ones that provide proof of a laddering peak (screenshots are also fine). If you forget to save the replay when you first pass a Hall of Fame level, then just save another replay proving you were above the Hall of Fame level.

Do I have to keep the same team for all the ladder matches?
Nope, feel free to change the team around the Pokemon in the core as often as you like. However, if you are caught on the ladder without the core on a tagged alt you will be disqualified.

I think these cores are stupid. When will there be better ones?
New cores will be up every week. They will eventually cover all 18 types and multiple play-styles. If you have a suggestion for a core, pm it to me accompanied by a brief description of why those Pokemon support one another and then it will be considered for future challenges

For any questions feel free to PM Elvira or Neko in Smogon or Discord (.elviraaa or .nekos.)

mhmm. that is right. this core ladder challenge will be a bit different than what we've held in the past. 8 weeks of cores filled with a set of 2: 1 Mon followed by a second Mon but with something specific added to it to spice up the building.

Stay tuned NDM..<3

CYCLE 4 SLATE 1: Iron Animals?!

Thunderbolt :SV/Archaludon: & :SV/heatran:

Example Tag: CCSte4 Elvira.
The purpose of the specifics of Thunderbolt Archaludon is that it checks various Flying- and Water- types Such as Pelipper on swift swim rain teams, Skarmory on Steel, other bulky Water- type Pokemon such as Toxapex or the likes of Corviknight another steel flyer. Paired with Heatran one could say these two can find a reliable way of being each others offensive & defensive power duo!

:SV/Lopunny-Mega: & Meteor Beam :SV/Terapagos:

Example Tag: CCNor4 Elvira
To say that the fighting bun bun is a staple on normal teams is quite possibly the most lore accurate way of describing Mega Lopunny. Paired with Meteor Beam Terapagos, this TERA TURTLE can actually become a way to threaten out a variety of pokemon but more specifically Flying- types. The two can also threaten Steel- types as well with a variety of coverage and Fighting- Stab that Lopunny carries.

Important note: To qualify for each week, at the end of each week please provide some form of evidence that you did in fact use the cores & their noteworthy teammate if they have a specific move or z crystal added. I would suggest doing a poke paste along with a screenshot of your Hall of Fame record. HAVE FUN GUYSSSSS. Also for each type that you do make sure you reply below and post the example tag or tags.

SLATE 1 COMPLETE! TIME FOR SLATE 2. LETS GET SPICY IN THIS NEXT CORE! <3
CYCLE 4 SLATE 2: FAIRIES IN THE FOREST!

:SV/Tapu Koko: & Taunt :SV/Tapu Lele:
Example Tag: CCFai4 Elvira
Fairy as a whole is designed around quite a few tapu's, or only just a few. Neither in between. Taunt Tapu Lele can stop setup sweepers that would genuinely fear that its a Choice Specs set such as Chansey or Ting Lu, stopping the setup of any form of Hazard, Status, or setup move that it can outspeed. Paired with Tapu Koko as its signature duo to pivot with Volt Switch or U-turn and to stop pesky steel flyers like Corviknight or Skarmory, the pair finds itself to work in synergy.
:SV/Ogerpon Wellspring: & Toxic Spikes :SV/Meowscarada:
Example Tag: CCGra4 Elvira. Not your typical choice of grass partners, Meowscarada can use viable hazards with Toxic Spikes and create an opening advantage for its teammates by spreading valuable poison to pokemon who do not have the option to run heavy duty boots or the likes of Steel- type Pokemon. Ogerpon Wellspring can potentially make use of Encore or just be a setup sweeper down the line to help clean up late game from its supportive Cat friend.

SLATE 2 IS COMPLETE, ONWARDS MY FRIENDS TO SLATE 3! Got what it takes?~
CYCLE 4 SLATE 3: PARASITES AMONGST THE FEATHERS!
WILL-O-WISP :sv/Volcarona: & :SV/Pinsir-Mega:

Example tag: CCBu4 Elvira. Mega Pinsir is one of Bug's best setup sweepers with the ability Aerialate making its normal type moves turn into STAB flying move such as Double Edge, Quick Attack, Facade, etc. Paired with Volcarona, Volcarona not only can in turn be a setup sweeper but also provide status with Will-o-Wisp turning Attackers who switch in into burnt solved problems!
WEATHER BALL :SV/Landorus: & :SV/Zapdos:
Example tag: CCFly4 Elvira. Now one will ask "Elvira, why Weather Ball?" well, a niche use of Landorus is that it has the capability to turn a normal move depending on the weather to either Fire, Water, Ice, or Rock. Which in turn can compliment it with its amazing special attack while offering a way to check Fire, Ground, or Rock teams! I would love to see the creativity with this. Pairing it with Zapdos can make use of a Gholdengo counter in the event that Landorus is down, or perhaps something that can generally provide momentum with Volt Switch.

SLATE 3 ENDS ON SUNDAY NOVEMBER 10TH AT 11:59 PM -4!

SLATE 3 IS COMPLETE! ONTO SLATE 4!
CYCLE 4 SLATE 4: ICE COLD VOLTS!
SCALE SHOT :SV/Kyurem: & :SV/Arctozolt:

Example tag: ccic4 Elvira. Both Kyurem and Arcotozolt serve Ice teams as respected setup sweepers with substitute variants or flat out damage. With the nerf to Roost, Kyurem finds itself becoming a better setup sweeper alongside Arctozolt as the pair can effectively fall under the new found snow mechanic and not only keep great speed but decent defenses.
:SV/Sandy Shocks: & VOLT SWITCH :SV/Zeraora:
Example tag: ccele4 Elvira. Sandy Shocks provides great hazard support with access to Spikes and Stealth Rocks while also having access to gravity, great Ground-type STAB, and a great offensive stat. Paired with Zeraora, a older generational powerhouse, Zeraora can make use of hazard stack damage and fire off a Plasma Fist, or pivot out with the likes of Volt Switch to get out of harms way into a defensive teammate.

SLATE 4 IS COMPLETE! ONTO SLATE 5!

CYCLE 4: SLATE 5: HELLISH GRUDGE!

SCALE SHOT :SV/Charizard-Mega-X: & :SV/Ninetales:
Example tag: Cc4Fi Elvira. Charizard X has always been a heavy hitter for fire as with its secondary dragon typing (the type that it should've been all along) can help greatly versus opposing Dragon teams while paired with Tough Claws makes it a threatening wallbreaker even with +1 to its already high attack! Paired with Ninetales for not only Drought to boost its Fire-type moves, it has access to support-esque moves with Encore and Healing Wish!

:SV/Weavile: & GRASSIUM Z :SV/Greninja:
Example tag: CcDa4 Elvira. Weavile assists Dark by breaking Dragon, Flying, and Ground teams while also being a quick heavy hitter. Paired with another swift breaker in Greninja, the two share similar traits in breaking these teams greatly with access to complimentary coverage and high attack stats. GRASSIUM Z can spot things like Swampert, Rotom-W, and other Ground- and Water- pests that think they can optionally switch in!
