[New Ability]
Screen Cleaner - When the Pokemon enters a battle, the effects of Light Screen, Reflect, and Aurora Veil are nullified for both opposing and ally Pokemon.
Screen Cleaner does not affect Safeguard. - Research Post
Remember, Screen Cleaner will wipe away your own screens too - don't use it if you're going to use Mr. Rime on a screens team.
[Pros]
- Great boosting moves and reliable recovery.
- Solid coverage options.
- Decent Special bulk, good Special Attack.
- Diverse utility options.
[Cons]
- Low Speed and extremely poor defensive typing means Mr. Rime will have a hard time getting a move off against offensive teams. A weakness to all entry hazards further contributes to Mr. Rime's difficulty in coming into battle.
- Will likely be outclassed as a Stored Power user by Reuniclus.
- Good physical options are left unusable by a weak Attack stat and an inability to boost Attack.
Overall, Mr. Rime looks like a Pokemon that will struggle to have any justifiable use in OU, but may be fun in lower tiers and draft leagues due to its large assortment of utility. It's something that you could make work on a team, but you'd likely have to go far out of your way to do so.
[Dynamaxing Potential]
- Max Mindstorm can aid Mr. Rime in wallbreaking by setting up Psychic Terrain.
- Max Hailstorm can trigger Ice Body for Mr. Rime, giving it a few turns of extra recovery.
[Potential Movesets]
Because of its utility being held back by poor Speed matched with an exploitable typing, Mr. Rime seems like a Pokemon that will have to rely on gimmicks to see any use. With that in mind, here's a bunch to play around with:
Blunder Policy
Mr. Rime @ Blunder Policy
Ability: Screen Cleaner / Ice Body
EVs: 72 HP / 252 SpA / 184 Spe
Modest Nature
- Hypnosis
- Nasty Plot
- Freeze-Dry
- Focus Blast
For something like this, you'd might be better off using Gengar. However, Mr. Rime should have enough natural bulk to be able to take a special hit on the lost turn if Blunder goes off. Other than that, this set can be used for disruption and potentially wallbreaking against slower teams. For reference, Blunder Policy doubles Speed when a move is missed. Adjust the Speed investment to hit relevant benchmarks when the Speed Tiers resource is available. For now, the set outspeeds max Speed neutral Tyranitar before Blunder Policy. With Nasty Plot, there is the potential for taking investment out of Special Attack and reinforcing defenses, but currently running max Modest to account for the low base power of Freeze-Dry and the need to compress coverage into two slots.
Discount Reuniclus
Mr. Rime @ Leftovers / Weakness Policy
Ability: Ice Body
EVs: 248 HP / 84 Def / 176 SpD
Calm Nature
- Slack Off
- Iron Defense
- Calm Mind
- Stored Power
Reliable recovery enables this set. The EV's are very flexible -- they're currently set up to be able to take Iron Head / Gyro Ball from Adamant Excadrill and Aegislash at +2 with Leftovers while leaving the majority of investment in the more slowly-boosting defensive stat. However, because of Mr. Rime's numerous weaknesses, a Weakness Policy could come in handy to give Stored Power a jump start - using this item would likely require tweaking the EV's to lean a bit more towards the physical side and would probably warrant Aurora Veil to get some turns of Ice Body and protection -- if you're using this set over Reuniclus, just go all in on committing to the gimmick. There's no point in splashing this set on a team.
Calm Mind
Mr. Rime @ Leftovers
Ability: Ice Body
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
- Slack Off
- Calm Mind
- Freeze-Dry
- Focus Blast
Mr. Rime can try to run a set like this to try to take advantage of some unique coverage, but it will be held back by its exploitable typing letting it be broken through on its unimpressive physical side by most relevant attackers in OU.
Full Wipe
Mr. Rime @ Heavy Duty Boots
Ability: Screen Cleaner
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Rapid Spin
- Freeze-Dry
- Psyshock / Psychic
- Focus Blast
Potentially a full reset for a whack HO team, taking advantage of Rapid Spin's new +1 Speed effect to clear hazards and screens while forcing in either a Choice Scarfer to check what it locks into to exploit, a defensive answer to chip away at and let a teammate get in against, or a naturally very fast Pokemon that can be exploited. Defensive investment can be tuned here to guarantee Mr. Rime lives certain hits from full against team-specific threats. This set will likely be outclassed by Excadrill unless screens become very popular.
