Welcome to the Monotype Core Ladder Challenge Thread! The Core Ladder Challenge obviously involves laddering...with a core! Seeing as this is the Monotype Core Ladder Challenge, we will be laddering on the [Gen9] Monotype ladder on Pokemon Showdown!. It is a competition encompassing multiple elements of competitive play: teambuilding, adapting, and battling! Various types will get a core every week, but you will have a little over a week to ladder with the core in order to achieve a Hall of Fame rank. After you've gotten the core, it's time to teambuild! The only restriction is that you'll have to use the Pokemon in the core; you may decide the move-sets, EVs and items yourself, as well as the partners.

Overview of Challenge Rules
by mauby .

  • To register, reply to the challenge you are participating in with the following information: Your Username, and your Laddering Alt (which must have the required tag)
  • To apply for a Hall of Fame level, state your Username, your Laddering Alt, the HoF Level you are applying for, and proof (i.e. Replays, Screenshots, etc.)
  • While you are laddering on your CC10 alt, you are only allowed to use a CC10 team, which corresponds with the CC10 tag of your alt. If you are found to have broken this rule on purpose, you will be disqualified. You must use the correct CC10 tag (CC10XxN) as specifed, if you wish to be eligible for the Hall of Fame (HoF). Failure to do so, will render your challenge invalid.
  • Asking your opponent for a free win or asking your opponent to forfeit is STRICLY PROHIBITED. Anyone caught doing this will be disqualified from competing in the Core Challenges.
  • It is strictly prohibited to share an account with another user, so that they may ladder for you. If caught you will be disqualified from competing in the Core Challenges.
  • Your CC10 team must contain the 2 members of the core at all times. You are free to change the other 4 members of your team as you wish, however.
Beginner's Guide to the Core Ladder Challenge
by mauby.

  • Step 1: Choose a core that you wish to compete with, observing what the CC10 tag for that core is. CC9 tags have a format of "CC10XxN" [CC10=Core Challenge; Xx=Type, N= The Cycle/Round of the type]. So for example, "CC10Wa2" is the 2nd cycle/round of the Water type cores.
  • Step 2: Create an alternate account ("alt" for short) using the CC10 tag. For example: "CC10Wa2 YourName"
  • Step 3: Reply to the challenge in which you want to participate in, and provide your Username, and the Laddering Alt you will be using. Your PS Username is your regular account and the CC10 alt is the alternate account you just created.
  • Step 4: Build a Monotype team, which includes the two (2) pokemon listed in the Core you're doing.
  • Step 5: When you are sure that your team is ready, log into your CC10 alt and begin battling on the Monotype Ladder.
  • Step 6: When you reach a milestone ELO, for example 1450 ELO for the "Silver" rank, save the replay and submit the link in the thread for proof.
  • Step 7: If you reach the "Platinum" rank of 1600 + 80% GXE, save the replay of each new ELO peak that you achieve which is greater than the listed HoF level. Before the challenge ends, submit the replay that shows your highest overall peak. The Top Finisher of each Core is the person with the highest ELO peak overall, in a submitted replay.
Do not cheat in this challenge! It is a global PS! offense to boost your ladder ranking. Within the confines of this challenge, this includes asking opponents to forfeit so you don't lose ELO.
People caught boosting their ELO in any way will be disqualified. No exceptions, you've been warned.
Can I use more than one type in each challenge?

Yes, just make sure you have a tagged alt for each one.

When can I start laddering?
As soon as you post in the challenge thread here on Smogon, you can start laddering.

Do I need to save/submit all my replays?
NO! Please submit replays that show you reaching a Hall of Fame level, or ones that provide proof of a laddering peak (screenshots are also fine). If you forget to save the replay when you first pass a Hall of Fame level, then just save another replay proving you were above the Hall of Fame level.

Do I have to keep the same team for all the ladder matches?
Nope, feel free to change the team around the Pokemon in the core as often as you like. However, if you are caught on the ladder without the core on a tagged alt you will be disqualified.

I think these cores are stupid. When will there be better ones?
New cores will be up every week. They will eventually cover all 18 types and multiple play-styles. If you have a suggestion for a core, pm it to me accompanied by a brief description of why those Pokemon support one another and then it will be considered for future challenges

Bronze: 1450 ELO / 1 Point
Silver: 1550 ELO / 2 Points
Gold: 1600 ELO / 3 Points
Platinum: 1650 + 80% GXE / 4 Points

Any further inquiries please message Elvira, boomp, Giyu, and Neko!

CYCLE 4 SLATE 1: Crimson Fangs Sparkled Wings.
Scale Shot :SV/Gouging Fire: & :SV/Roaring Moon:
Example Tag: CCDra4 Elvira. Gouging Fire arguably holds the spot of being one of the better answers to fairy types on dragon teams as its neutral typing in Fire on top of respectable bulk can make it an easy setup sweeper. Scale Shot, although can lower its Defense, can still find a way to break through and shred many a team. Pairing it with Roaring Moon can make for a disgustingly powerful Attack duo.
Rest :SV/Primarina: & :SV/Enamorus:
Example Tag: CCFai4 Elvira.
Primarina Is on the chopping block this week as one of Fairy's best defensive setup sweeper. With great bulk on top of Calm Mind to raise its Special Defense, it can become quite the formidable late game reverse sweeper! Rest is one of its best ways of turning a game completely around. Lets sleep the competition away with miss ponytail. Pairing her with Enamorus can assist greatly with being great speed control on top of also being a secondary viable setup sweeper.

Important note: To qualify for each week, at the end of each week please provide some form of evidence that you did in fact use the cores & their noteworthy teammate if they have a specific move added. I would suggest doing a poke paste along with a screenshot of your Hall of Fame record. HAVE FUN GUYSSSSS. Also for each type that you do make sure you reply below and post the example tag or tags.

SLATE 1 ENDS ON SUNDAY NOVEMBER 3RD AT 11:59 PM -4.

CYCLE 2 SLATE 2: THE SEA OF DARKNESS..
:SV/Cloyster: & CALM MIND :SV/Keldeo:

Example Tag: CCWa4 Elvira. Cloyster is the underdog of water as of late, however pairing it with Calm Mind Keldeo could make for some great replays of what I like to call a power duo. Shell Smash Icicle Spear & Rock Blast melts a lot of different types both super effectly or neutrally, shredding through teams quite easily given the right setup, and Keldeo is feared amongst Steel teams.
SWORDS DANCE :SV/Samurott-Hisui: & :SV/Bisharp:
Example Tag: CCDa4 Elvira. Dark is in shambles now. Kingambit AND CHIEN PAO!!!! Lets pull ourselves together and find in favor two new spotlights. Bisharp is a miniature Kingambit, with the ability to now run Eviolite for more Defense or keep its old generation Black Glasses or Life Orb set to provide more power. Samurott with its signature Sharpness ability can slice through the enemies while setting Spikes with Ceaseless Edge.

SLATE 2 ENDS ON SUNDAY NOVEMBER 10TH AT 11:59 PM -5!

SLATE 2 IS FINALIZED, ONTO SLATE 3.
CYCLE 4 SLATE 3: MAGMA IRONWORKS.

SWORDS DANCE :SV/cinderace: & :SV/Ninetales:
Example tag: CcFi4 Elvira. Both of these magnificent species are the key token to any fire team, but lets twist it up yeah? Swords Dance provides Cinderace with a more offensive backbone in front of teams weak to its already destructive Pyro Ball. And with limited but somewhat vast coverage options, make use of its Attack stat and turn the tides of the match! With Healing Wish and Drought support, Ninetails backs up its Rabbit friend greatly!

Trick :SV/Gholdengo: & :SV/Scizor:
Example tag: CcSte4 Elvira. I know, I will hold your hand and nod and comfort you. Kingambit is gone. BUT THAT DOESNT MEAN WE CANT HAVE GOOD OLD FASHIONED FUN WITH STEEL TYPES WOOOOH! Trick on Gholdengo can either raise Speed with a Choice Scarf making Gholdengo a eye opening fast threat, or its already great Special Attack with a Choice Specs, or you could even run a toxic orb to make sure those Ground and Fire type enjoyers know that you're still hurt by the decision! The choice is yours! Scizor is the replacement, coming back from retirement to torment the metagame with its Technician boosted Bullet Punches.

Bronze: 1450 ELO / 1 Point
Silver: 1550 ELO / 2 Points
Gold: 1600 ELO / 3 Points
Platinum: 1650 + 80% GXE / 4 Points

SLATE 3 ENDS APPROXIMATELY SUNDAY NOVEMBER 17TH AT 11:59 PM GMT -5.

SLATE 3 IS COMPLETE! ONTO SLATE 4!
CYCLE 4 SLATE 4: DIRTY GRAVESTONES!

FREEZE DRY :SV/Mamoswine: & :SV/Landorus:

Example Tag: CcGro4 Elvira. Mamoswine is one of Ground's more expendable wallbreakers. With access to a high attack stat, usual choice in a choice band, and heavy hitting ice moves, it finds itself being paired well with Landorus and Excadrill as one of the three threats. Freeze Dry is one choice of Ice STAB that can break the likes of Pelipper on rain teams, making it a bit easier to pivot around the likes of one of the most threatening types Ground faces. It can also run a mixed set with Icicle Crash that pairs efficiently with Gravity from Landorus! From NevermeltIce to Choice sets, the world is your cloyster.

SUBSTITUTE :SV/Flutter Mane: & :SV/Golurk:
Example tag: CcGho4 Elvira. Flutter Mane has a unique specialty in being a secondary Fairy type among Ghost teams. However with that can come with a variety of sets you can run along with access to quite a few goodies in coverage. Substitute can be used once Flutter Mane switches into one of its many threats. Allowing a potential setup option in the later of the match. Golurk isn't seen as much so lets bring him to the limelight! Entry Hazards and an Electric immunity are a perk! No Guard Poltergeists, Dynamic Punches, again the world is your Cloyster!

Gold: 1600 ELO / 3 Points
Platinum: 1650 + 80% GXE / 4 Points

SLATE 4 ENDS APPROXIMATELY SUNDAY NOVEMBER 24TH AT 11:59 PM GMT -5.[/SPOILER]

SLATE 4 IS COMPLETE, ONTO SLATE 5!
CYCLE 4 SLATE 5: THE HIGHEST OF HIGH JUMP KICKS!
PSYCHIC :SV/Landorus: & :SV/Zapdos Galar:

Example Tag: CCFly4 Elvira. Landorus has the wall & stallbreaking potential to break through teams with its Sheer Force ability + Life Orb. With Psychic can Landorus be a major threat to the likes of Fighting and Poison foes that think they can pivot into the likes of Earth Power and believe they can survive. Which most can't. So your average Weezing-Galar, Amoongus, not so often Zapdos Galars, etc. Pairing with Zapdos Galar can be of use for speed control with the likes of a choice scarf + help heavily versus Steel-type foes like Goodra-Hisui that can tank at least 1 Earth Power.
ENCORE :SV/Iron Valiant: & :SV/Lilligant Hisui:
Example Tag: CCFig4 Elvira. Iron Valiant has access to a variety of different sets in terms of Choice-locked, Setup with Swords Dance + Calm Mind, or all out Life Orb. Lets see about a not so used set with the likes of Encore! Encore stops a majority of setup sweepers or hazard setters such as pivoting into Stealth Rock Archaludon or Hippowdon. These are just 2 of many Pokemon that wouldn't enjoy being encored on. If you find your opportunity to be a menace with this, do it! Pairing this special new robot with Lilligant helps versus the likes of Water, Ground, and Flying with hitting Triple Axel (We do in fact have a love hate relationship with hustle).

Important note: To qualify for each week, at the end of each week please provide some form of evidence that you did in fact use the cores & their noteworthy teammate if they have a specific move added. SLATE 5 ENDS ON SUNDAY DECEMBER 1ST AT 11:59 PM -4!

SLATE 5 IS COMPLETE, ONTO SLATE 6!

CYCLE 4 SLATE 6:
VENOMOUS ICE SHARDS!

FOUL PLAY :SV/Pecharunt: & :SV/Sneasler:
Example Tag: CCPoi4 Elvira. Pecharunt boasts a fantastic defense stat albeit given the types that were graced to it before launch in the light bulb above game freaks head. It can spread Poison and Confusion with the likes of its many status inducing moves and ability, but also be an excellent check to Attack based setup sweepers with the likes of Foul Play! Paired with Sneasler, the two can check each others weaknesses or become quite potent threats on the battlefield.

SCALE SHOT :SV/Kyurem: & :SV/Weavile:
Example Tag: CCIc4 Elvira. Ice hasn't had much love to it in the recent months-- well once Chien Pao was given the boot. So I figured we could try to see if we can try to make Ice work in a metagame where Steel and Dragon can pose gigantic threats to a type that has never seen the spotlight of top 5 types in pretty much ever.

Important note: To qualify for each week, at the end of each week please provide some form of evidence that you did in fact use the cores & their noteworthy teammate if they have a specific move added. SLATE 6 WILL END APPROXIMATELY SUNDAY DECEMBER 8TH AT 11:59 PM -4.

SCALE SHOT :SV/Kyurem: & :SV/Weavile:

I am this close of running Choice Specs Kyurem with Scale Shot just cause it's that much better than dragon dance.
