- Roost
[SET COMMENTS]
Moltres’s main niche comes from its variety of useful qualities making it a prominent defensive Pokemon. It is a defogger that can threaten Gholdengo; a check to common Stealth Rock setters like Great Tusk, Heatran, and Garchomp; and a deterrent to contact attackers like U-turn users, Kartana, and Mega Lopunny. However, its main weakness lies in its overreliance on its Heavy-Duty Boots—although Tera could let it drop its weakness to Rock, Tera is usually better spent on other Pokemon, so Moltres still fears Knock Off from opponents it would otherwise check, like Iron Valiant, Landorus-T, Kartana, and Mega Scizor. Tera Water is used to ease the matchup against rain, becoming a check to common rain abusers like Basculegion-M, Mega Swampert and Barraskewda and threatening to burn them with Flame Body. Tera Ground instead grants a resistance to Stealth Rock and Stone Edge from Choice Scarf Landorus-T and an immunity to Volt Switch from Tapu Koko, Zapdos, and Rotom-W and Thunderbolt from Iron Valiant. Mystical Fire is chosen over Flamethrower, as its Special Attack drop is useful to more easily check Pokemon like Iron Valiant, Mega Charizard Y, and Gholdengo. Scorching Sands is used to beat Heatran and also deter physical attackers looking to set up due to its high burn chance. Hurricane allows Moltres to OHKO Great Tusk and Mega Lopunny while heavily denting Volcarona and is useful in general as a powerful STAB option, U-turn allows Moltres to function as a pivot, pivoting out on foes like Heatran and Garganacl, and Toxic allows Moltres to punish Pokemon such as Hippowdon, Ting-Lu, and Garchomp looking to soak up its STAB options. The given EVs allow Moltres to survive two Frustration from Mega Lopunny without Stealth Rock damage, while the given Speed EVs allows Moltres to outspeed Modest Heatran. However, there are still many opponents that can pressure Moltres, like Garganacl, Toxapex, and Tapu Koko. Moltres thus pairs well with wallbreakers that can take advantage of such switch-ins to come in, like Tapu Lele or Iron Valiant. Moltres also dislikes having its Heavy-Duty Boots removed, so teammates that can absorb Knock Off are appreciated, including Mega Scizor and Gliscor.
