Analysis:
Since DPP when Mamoswine was introduced, its massive Attack stat, great offensive typing, and access to priority Ice Shard made it a notable threat in both DPP OU and BW OU and players often used it as their go-to "dragonslayer". One of Mamoswine's abilities, Oblivious, also got a buff, allowing Mamoswine to set up Stealth Rock through Taunt. However, though Mamoswine hasn't gotten nerfed, the metagame around it has changed dramatically. The introduction of the new Fairy-type brought Pokemon who were immune to dragonspam attacks such as Outrage and Specs / Scarf Draco Meteor, and have an easy time dealing with the many Dragon-type powerhouses in the tier. Additionally, the Defog buff allows hazards to be removed from the field much easier, making Stealth Rock Mamoswine kind of pointless because it only really is a one shot lead as a Stealth Rock lead.

However, what are some common Mamoswine sets? Let's take a look. These are some of the most popular sets from BW OU that have been transitioned over to XY OU.

Common sets:

Offensive
Mamoswine @ Life Orb
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 Def
Adamant / Jolly
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Ice Shard
- Icicle Crash

The premier dragon slaying set of BW OU, this set comes over to XY to do pretty much the same thing. Mamoswine uses the famed EdgeQuake combo to a great degree of success, hitting popular Pokemon such as Talonflame and Aegislash for super-effective damage. Mamoswine's Dream World ability Thick Fat works to its favor extremely well; It is now neutral to Fire and can hit with Earthquake and Stone Edge super-effectively, as well as doing the same with Ice, which Mamoswine now resists. Ice Shard is probably the reason Mamoswine is such a renowned dragonslayer; it has priority and the STAB it recieves as well as Mamoswine's massive Attack stat can bring down some of OU's most prominent dragons such as Dragonite, Salamence, and Garchomp. Of course if Ice Shard just won't cut it, or if Mamoswine is faster or counters the opposition, Icicle Crash is a much more powerful STAB option. Unfortunately, Mamoswine doesn't have access to Superpower for now, so it struggles against the likes of Air Balloon Aegislash and Ferrothorn. Of course, Stealth Rock is still an option for this set, if you wish to keep Mamoswine alive and need a Stealth Rock setter.

Sash Lead
Mamoswine @ Focus Sash
Ability: Oblivious / Thick Fat
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 Def
Adamant / Jolly
- Stealth Rock
- Ice Shard
- Earthquake
- Icicle Crash / Stone Edge

This set is vastly different from the previous set, aiming to guarantee that Stealth Rock is set on the field right off the bat. This set got a buff this generation with Oblivious now being able to ignore Taunt, allowing Mamoswine to get Stealth Rock up no matter what tries to shut it down. The other moves aim to deal as much of a punch as possible before Mamoswine inevitably goes down. This set struggles a little in the current metagame, with the buff on Defog allowing Flying-types to come in and sweep away your hard work. Nonetheless, this set more or less guarantees that Stealth Rock goes on the field at the beginning of the match, and with the lack of Stealth Rock as a TM this generation (meaning less SR setters), this might be just what many teams need.

Personal Analysis
With most Fairy-types being defensive (i.e. Sylveon, Florges, Clefable), Mamoswine remains one of the premier Dragon checks in the tier while providing a massive amount of offensive pressure. Though the lack of Superpower hurts it slightly, Mamoswine never ceases to deal massive damage with its dual STAB and priority Ice Shard. The Sash Lead is now more reliable with the buff on Oblivious, and even though Defog users make it harder to keep hazards on the field, Stealth Rock is still going to be a must-have move on any team, and the fact that the set guarantees it goes on the field from the start, as well as the fact that Flying-types take SR damage super-effectively anyways, means that this set is still going to be great (maybe even more important PrePokebank with the temporary scarcity of SR setters).

Questions for Discussion
-Is Mamoswine still worth using as a check to Dragon-types over the Fairies?
-Is the Sash Lead still worth using with the lack of Endeavor and the buff on Defog making it easier to remove?
-What are some checks and counters to Mamoswine, old or new?
-Does the lack of Superpower and Endeavor for now affect Mamoswine significantly?
-What else is Mamoswine good for?
-Which set is better?
-Are there any new sets or new roles that Mamoswine can run?
-Has Mamoswine improved since BW OU, or has the metagame changes around it proved to be too much?
-Mamoswine has access to Freeze-Dry. Does this matter?
-Go nuts and come up with your own discussion questions! :D

*Please note that anything relating to checks/counters is without regards to tiering, as nothing of the sort is definite as of now*

Personally, I think Mamoswine is definitely still worth using to check Dragon-types. Its STAB priority in Ice Shard allows it to hit for x4 effectiveness on many relevant Dragon-types - something that Fairy-types cannot boast (except against Hydreigon - sorry buddy). Rayquaza, Salamence, Garchomp, Flygon (lol), and Altaria (double lol) all detest taking a hit from Mamoswine's Ice Shard. Plus, as of now, Fairy-types lack any Fairy-priority (except Pixilate + Quick Attack and Baby-Doll Eyes, which is non-damaging), so there's that.

As for checks/counters, Skarmory walls Mamoswine pretty effectively, both in typing and in stat distribution. Until Mamoswine has access to Endeavor and Superpower, Rotom-W can counter most movesets as well. Offensive Pokemon that can weather an Ice Shard, outspeed, and KO, such as Keldeo, Terrakion, and Scizor, also present some issues.

New Pokemon-wise, nothing really stands out to me except King's Shield Aegislash, blocking a would-be SE Earthquake and cutting Mamoswine's offense. However, new hyper-offensive Mega-Evolutions like Mega-Blaziken and Mega-Lucario can put the hurt on Mamoswine, though neither of them would like to switch into an Earthquake.

Mamoswine still has one of the best offensive dual-STAB's in the game, hitting almost every single Pokemon for at least neutral damage (those not hit include Shedinja, Surskit, Rotom-F and Rotom-H, Cryogonal, and Bronzong). With additional coverage in Stone Edge and later Superpower, Mamoswine is an offensive powerhouse.

As for new sets, it's kind of hard to tell without knowing of any new moves Mamoswine has received. I'm sure some shenanigans will be tested with Weakness Policy and Thick Fat (though Mamoswine lacks the speed to sweep very well). I'm almost certain Sash Leads will see more use, however, because even with the introduction of Defog, entry hazards are still a large part of the game, and Oblivious will aid Mamoswine in setting rocks quite nicely.

Also, have you seen shiny Mamoswine? He's green, I tell you! GREEN!

FYI, King's shield only lowers attack on contact moves. Earthquake is not a contact move, so Mamoswine can spam Earthquake without fear.

As long as physically-defensive rotom-w runs rampant, Mamoswine is going to have a hard time getting anything going.

252+ Atk Choice Band Mamoswine Superpower vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Rotom-W: 148-175 (48.68 - 57.56%) -- 53.13% chance to 2HKO

It's workable, but rotom-w is still going to be a major thorn in mamo's side.

Mamoswine also competes with excadrill for a team slot. While excadrill can't revenge dragons not locked into outrage, it has rapid spin. In addition, mold breaker EQ is a great way to manhandle rotom-w.

Mamoswine is definitely worth it as a dragon-check. While previous monsters like Salamence and Hydreigon (poor, poor Hydreigon...) are much easier stopped by fairy-types, Dragonite and Garchomp both have ways around them - coincidentally, both of these are doubly ice-weak. Mamoswine also has priority, meaning it doesn't have to rely on an outrage-lock to revenge-kill it, unlike fairies.

When Defog becomes more widespread in December, Mamoswine may want to run not a suicide lead, rather a bulky tank with Stealth Rock. Mamoswine can beat nearly every relevant defogger, including unreleased ones like Latias, one on one, and relegating that to a suicide hazard-setter seems like a waste.

I've been having trouble with stall pokemon like Gliscor and Breloom that like to hide behind substitute. Is it worth running Icicle Spear instead of Icicle Crash for getting past the substitute?

If you're really having trouble with Substitute or Sash opponents, then its probably worth it. There's not much difference in power anyways.

Mamoswine shouldn't stay in on Breloom unless it's planning to Shard it to death tho

To be honest, even with the Oblivious buff, I still prefer Thick Fat. Being able to survive unboosted Fire moves and resist Ice really gives him more survivability. If I see a Taunt lead, I'll either use a different lead, or use Mamoswine anyway if the Pokemon can't really do much to him. I like Focus Sash because it allows me to save Mamoswine for revenge killing with Ice Shard later, specifically Dragons.

Also, going Adamant has proven to be more rewarding for me than Jolly, as it packs an extra punch, and kills things that take neutral damage from Ice Shard even in the yellow health bar. So the question of going Jolly simply for the sake of outrunning Breloom, while it's nice, is situational. Chances are your Ice Shard won't one-shot him if he's at full health anyway, unless you're Choice Banded and he has no HP EVs. Still, I'd rather not leave Mamo on Breloom anyway, unless we were down to our last Pokemon. Then yes, that's where Jolly might be helpful.

Is it worth sacrificing the extra attack power? No, not in my opinion. Breloom is only one Pokemon out of many other threats, and not to mention, he has been nerfed a bit. Breloom is still a great Pokemon, don't get me wrong - but again, I wouldn't want to leave Mamo up against him anyway.

Dragonite despite Miracle Scale doesn't like it either. Dragonite's attacks do not do much to Mamoswine with his bulk and Mamoswine outruns an unboosted Dragonite with Icicle Crash. (And if it doesn't KO can finish it with Ice Shard.) It's also immune to Thunder Wave and the priority can beat Roost.

Mamoswine also makes a decent Talonflame check with Thick Fat. Icicle Crash puts Talonflame in KO range of Ice Shard normally and he can take a Brave Bird or Flare Blitz. (I think Banded Talonflame has a chance to KO, though?) Earthquake and Icicle Crash also have almost perfect coverage and with Mamoswine's STAB hit really hard.

This should probably move to the old mons thread.
That aside, Mamo is an all around good pokemon, despite havin quite many weaknesses and all, last Gen it was basically an "anti-meta" thread, and a good one at it, too. Now it should be able to check stuff such as Aegislash (beware of switchin into Sacred Sword or lettin it set up, since an Aegis at full health and in Defense stance should be able to take one EQ), Talonflame, beat up Klefki (but it will get up screens, still) .. it's a good mon. But all the aforementioned pokemon can beat him (sans Klefki) with the right conditions.

I've had success with this:

252 HP 252 Att 4 Def
Leftovers
Thick Fat

Ice Shard
Earthquake
Roar
Stealth Rock

I hate hate hate Stone Edge, so this is my alternative. I use him as a dragon/flying killer first and stealth rock setter second. Mid-game Rocks is pretty awesome. The one weakness with this set compared to an Edger is when going up against Talon, but Shard does good damage, and with Thick Fat and Lefties, Mamo can take a few hits. I've had a few Talons try to set up on me with some combinations of Swords Dance/Roost/Bulk Up, to which I just Roar them away. Roar also helps with Cosmic Power Clefable, who gives me a lot of trouble for some reason. There's also Roaring to rack up Rock damage, which if used smartly, is pretty darn great (as I'm sure you guys know), and it can bring in their Dragons to either kill or force more switches. I'm not sure on the EV spread or item. I think a little more power would be beneficial...what do you guys think?

FYI, King's shield only lowers attack on contact moves. Earthquake is not a contact move, so Mamoswine can spam Earthquake without fear.
GAH! Stupid Physical vs. Contact difference... Well, there ya go. One less check to Mamoswine.

Huh. I thought I had Dragonite in there...

Well, with Miracle/Marvel/Multi -Scale (take your pick):
252 Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Ice Shard vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Dragonite: 359-426 (93 - 110.36%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO
That's through Multiscale.

weee thread revive

that set looks like Tank Piloswine brought to its evolution lol. Not sure exactly how viable it is but if it worked in the lower tiers, maybe it'll work in OU...? It definitely provides a form of setting Stealth Rock while maintaining Mamoswine's longevity. I might test it out in the future, but for now I'll add it into the OP :D

I think one thing that's important to note is that Mamoswine can check Aegislash in a pinch with it's Adamant STAB LO Earthquake. (Obviously assuming Aegislash hasn't boosted to a point where Shadow Sneak will kill you) That's a very useful niche to have on your team.

I find this mixed set particularly good in the current metagame:

Mamoswine@Life Orb
Trait: Thick Fat
EVs: 252 Atk/252 Spe/4SpA
Nature: Naive
-Ice Shard
-Freeze Dry
-Earthquake
-Knock Off

It has almost no safe switch-ins, especially now that steel lost its resistance to dark and Knock Off got a huge buff. Freeze Dry is almost entirely for Rotom-W, who is common enough to warrant special treatment.

4 SpA Life Orb Mamoswine Freeze Dry vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Rotom-W: 140-166 (46 - 54.6%)

Mamoswine is at a critical speed tier. With 16 Spd EVs it can outspeed minimum speed Togekiss, Goodra, Chandelure, Gardevoir, Dragonite, Gyarados and Ghourgheist. With a bit more you can manage to outspeed minimum speed Rotom, but that's not a great match up as is.

I got wrecked by what had to of been an Assault Vest Mamoswine. He indeed has the HP and Attack to benefit from it and enough moves too. I was getting wrecked from EQ, Knock Off and Ice Shard.

I think Thick Fat Mamoswine potentially can abuse Weakness Policy, being a great switch into Fire moves and is also weak to Water, Grass, Steel and Fighting. A +2 Mamoswine can wreak absolute havoc with Ice Shard, or any conjunction of it with Icicle Crash, EQ and Stone Edge or something afterwards. Hell, with a +2 to SpA it could even potentially run Freeze Dry which would outright kill and Intimidate Gyarados trying to limit your fun and will wreck most Water types in general.

Mamoswine@Weakness Policy
Thick Fat
Adamant 240 HP / 252 At / 16 Spd
~ Ice Shard
~ Earthquake
~ Freeze Dry
~ Superpower/Knock Off/Stone Edge/Amnesia/Ancientpower/Curse

Knock Off is actually pretty strong when they have an item and the Dark coverage can be handy. Stone Edge is the most powerful with EQ but that accuracy... Ancient Power would be more reliable accuracy wise but nowhere near as strong. If you switch in on an Electric move and are likely to prompt a switch then Amnesia could give you the durability needs to survive SE hits better and better ensure Ice Shard devastation. Curse is also potentially more devastating, giving you tougher chops against Fighting moves and making you pretty much unstoppable with +3 Ice Shard but it makes the speed EVs pointless afterwards.

I am mad I cannot have Avalanche on my mamoswine anymore due to new breeding rules. I would have prefered that over Icice crash since I run admant with 252hp/252att and it generally goes 2nd.

I'm happy to see people considering freeze dry.

I know we all love our max attacks but I wanna think outside the box for a moment. I'm looking to try a more tanky set.
252hp/252def/4 attack with an assult vest/weakness policy and thick fat.

Ice Shard (priority)
EQ (Attack)
Freeze Dry (Bulky water)
Knock off (Item knocker/ghost hitter)

Opinions?

Attacks and nature will change depending on item.

Mamoswine's typing and stats leave him with few resistances meaning with no recovery you want to hit as HARD as possible so that you don't have to worry about taking a second hit. Same with Weakness Policy. He has the bulk and power to survive hits opponents would hope to have OHKO him otherwise and annihilate them, but he just doesn't have the typing to take repeated beatings. Pokemon without good or numerous resistances just do not make good dedicated defensive pokemon, especially without recovery, and you're sacrificing his saving grace in his naturally great attack to do something he wasn't meant to poorly, suffering in both ways. Make no mistake, being weak to Fire, Water AND Fighting is a huge detriment. Curse with Weakness Policy at least has the benefit of helping him survive a SE move better as well as power up Ice Shard further which helps his overall survivability. If he didn't have a priority move I would not recommend Weakness Policy at all.

I've had tons of success with Mamoswine in this metagame, but the idea of Freeze Dry is very intriguing.

The problem is that I can't seem to find room for it on my Stealth Rock set. I'm going to start running Thick Fat > Oblivious for sure, but if I decide to make it less dedicated as a lead (and more of a mid-game rock setter) then the Focus Sash wouldn't be necessary either. Has anybody had actual success with Weakness Policy + Freeze Dry? I'm thinking something like SR / EQ / Ice Shard / Freeze Dry | Icicle Crash

Has anyone tried this set? An offensive and specially defensive pivot.

Mamoswine @ Assault Vest
Ice/Ground
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Sp.Def / 4 HP
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Icicle Crash
- Ice Shard
- Stone Edge

Some Calcs to give a rough idea:
252 SpA Life Orb Greninja Hydro Pump vs. 4 HP / 252 SpD Assault Vest Mamoswine: 283-338 (78.1 - 93.3%)
252 SpA Life Orb Volcarona Fire Blast vs. 4 HP / 252 SpD Assault Vest Thick Fat Mamoswine: 174-205 (48 - 56.6%)
252+ SpA Life Orb Aegislash-Blade Shadow Ball vs. 4 HP / 252 SpD Assault Vest Mamoswine: 149-177 (41.1 - 48.8%)
252+ SpA Life Orb Hydreigon Draco Meteor vs. 4 HP / 252 SpD Assault Vest Mamoswine: 212-251 (58.5 - 69.3%)

One can opt to tweak the EVs to reach certain speed tiers. For example: 252 Atk/240 Sp.Def/16 Spe.

lol interesting thread revival

you guys come up with sets i probably wouldn't have thought of in a long time. Assault Vest and Weakness Policy intrigue me most especially with the Fire weakness being neutralized with Thick Fat. Will be sure to try that out sometime

It's also important to note that Mamoswine can only get Superpower and Knock Off from Gen 5, meaning you'll need to wait till December or play Pokebank

OP updated with some community sets within the thread feel free to discuss them kthxbai

Assault Vest is piquing my interest... Mamo doesn't lose much power and gains the ability to switch in to a wide variety of attacks.

Did some nosing around with Mamoswine and Knock Off + Freeze Dry is illegal on it since Knock Off is a 5th Gen Move Tutor move and Freeze Dry is an egg move for 6th Gen. Still Freeze Dry on Mamoswine is still a fun idea with it being able to net a 2HKO on Rotom-W.

Unfortunately, due to Mamoswine's 70 base SpA vs 130 base Atk, neutral Stone Edge outdamages a STAB super effective Freeze-Dry on a target with equal defenses. Granted, a lot of Rotom-W's are physically defensive, so here's the calc:

4 SpA Life Orb Mamoswine Freeze Dry vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Rotom-W: 140-166 (46 - 54.6%) -- 8.2% chance to 2HKO with Leftovers

100 SpA Life Orb is necessary to guarantee the 2HKO when you factor in Leftovers. I don't think Mamoswine wants to invest that heavily into SpA just to 2HKO a Pokemon that can OHKO with Hydro Pump in return, so Freeze-Dry is a very niche option. I'll admit it's a fun one though, especially for cleanly OHKOing Quagsire when Earthquake only has a 28.9% chance to 2HKO.

Yeah, I'm not thinking freeze dry is worth it. And if your opponent is running choice scarf rotom-W, then you just lost your Pokemon. I'm not sure if it hits anything else either. Unless ludicolo becomes popular in OU.

You guys seem to have mentioned everything already. Icicle spear is a legitimate option for the likes of para shuffle dragonite, sub-coil Zigarde (this thing is a monster), gliscor, and sub-poison heal breloom. Mamoswine can still for switches on ocassion, so I've been using SR on him still. Assault vest does not sound like a bad idea though.
