It seems Latios has fallen from its former grace in OU... New threats like Aegislash and Talonflame make its life really difficult, as well as older threats such as Tyranitar and Scizor.
 
I dunno I think I disagree. Latios is still plenty powerful. Specs/scarf set is a little less viable thanks to fairy types but he's still the same powerful fast dragon sweeper. There are just more things you need to clear now.
 
Latios is overall still very good. Defog is great for Latios but I think Latias makes better use of it. What isn't so great is that Dragon Pulse and Draco Meteor both were nerfed, both great STAB moves for Latios. Latios does have to watch out for Fairies now, but Thunderbolt hits the two most common Fairies, Azumarill and Togekiss, pretty hard, and it does have other coverage moves for other threats as well. Latios is still a great Pokemon, but it did drop a little this Generation.

Latios now can counter steels such as Heatran and Ferrothrorn.Special Latios is walled by steels.And the 4 SpA is for the HP fire. However Hippodown is a counter,getting 4HKOed by Outrage.

Latios is much like Hydreigon this generation: Fairy-Types prevent the nuking, but they are still very threatening in their own respects. I still see Latios being a fun little Pokemon to use, but he's going to have a slightly harder time launching his own nukes.
 
Choice Specs Latios is still an amazing set, especially now that most people don't specifically build their team to take repeated +1 Draco Meteors. It can still plow through a lot of the metagame:

The two most arguably viable fairy types in Azumarill and Togekiss can't switch into Latios safely either as they're both outsped and 2HKOed by LO Thunderbolts. Not only that, but Latios has a new niche as a good offensive Defogger.

I think Latios dip in popularity was due to shiny new toys in Aegislash and Mega-Gengar, it will rise again eventually
 
Its still amazing. Life orb+roost latios can manhandle most teams because there isnt much that can take repeated hits from it. Choice specs is a great nuke, draco meteor just plows through anything except fairies and bulky steels. 110 speed makes it hard to revenge kill, levitate means youre not going to bother him too much with hazards, solid typing with resistances to water, fire, grass, fighting and more allows it to function as a decent switch in to many threats. Latios is simply put an incredible pokemon. I dont really see him being nerfed, even though there are new checks there arent really that many of them anyway.

Do those Draco Meteor 2HKOs take into account the SpA drop on the second one? Or are those numbers just meant to illustrate that he can take a chunk out of Steel types trying to switch into him so they won't want to do it often?

At any rate, he got nerfed a lot less than Hydreigon this gen thanks to Psyshock, which 2HKOs every Fairy except Klefki and MMawile, who are 2HKO'd by Surf (though MMawile will kill you with Sucker Punch first, so on that one you pretty much have to run). Very few things are running SDef bulk these days except those trying to check MLuc, so not much will be prepared for Latios.

It sounds like it could be great, if it weren't for the existence of Dragonite, Salamence, Haxorus, Zygarde, and MegaZardX.

...I suppose it has a better speed tier, but D-nite and Zygarde both have priority anyway. But really, why use your base 90 attack when you have base 130 special attack to be playing with? If Heatran is a problem, run surf.
 
I think people just forgot it exists with the new pokemon hype. It's a defogger that's immune to 3 types of entry hazards and neutral to the fourth ffs. It has thunderbolt to hit azumarill+togekiss as well as psyshock for sylveon+florges so it's draco meteor is still as potent as ever.

Expect latios to rise up again. Even if it got nerfed this gen, there's no pokemon that completely outclasses it.

Psyshock 2HKOs Azumarill, too, so Tbolt is only needed for physically defensive Togekiss sets.
 
I think it would be worth talking about the differentiations between Latios and Latias. What are the important moveset differences between the two? I know Latios learns Memento while Latias learns Healing Wish. Is there anything else important?
 
I fully expect to see the Life Orb set get tons of press. Great neutral coverage between Draco Meteor, Psyshock, and HP Fire or Surf, and a fast Defog make it an ideal offensive support mon. Plus it can run Recover over a coverage move to potentially play mind games with Fairy type switch-ins. Gen VI only took away mindless DM spam, but it by no means neutered one of the best Life Orb users in the tier.

I wouldn't agree with that. Specs Draco still does 35%-40% to Aegislash. The only other new counters to specs draco that will actually be seen regularly is Azumarill (fairly common), M-Gardevoir (not that common right now, but will be after the next wave of bans) and Togekiss (infrequent). Standard offensive M-Gardevoir takes 50%-58% from specs Psyshock (LO set only gets the 2HKO reliably with SR), while the other two are 2HKO'd by Thunderbolt. Specs Latios still plays the same nearly every time, only now there are three pokemon that will make you sometimes consider choosing to click Psyshock or Thunderbolt instead of Draco.
 
I still prefer using Life Orb with Roost/Recover recovery. Is offensive Calm Mind set usable this gen? Otherwise we still have Latias, which is still a more reliable defoger in my opinion.
 
I think one of the most absurd things I said that it would be UU. It seems to be middle-low OU due to Fairies and being a defogger.

That's why it is relevant threat and should be accounted for by all teams. I initially underestimated it and I was horrified that I had nothing to check the Scarf set. I killed it because I predicted its switch with Conkeldurr's Knock Off. It can destroy unprepared teams that do not have much to resist its STABs or have specially bulky Pokemon or anything that outspeeds it.

Latios simply has a good speed tier, although Greninja does check non-scarfed Latios, and raw neutral power on both the special and physical (with Psyshock). While it does have impressive neutral power, its duals STABs are non-synergistic and it does have access to valued coverage moves, such as Focus Blast, Aura Sphere, and Fire Blast.

It does have enormous potential, but it is a Pokemon that involves many choices. A Scarf allows it to outspeed offensive threats, such as ScarfChomp, but it deprives it of flexibility. It can use some coverage moves such as Thunderbolt and Surf to hit other targets without resulting the the Special Attack drop, but that may mean depriving it of Defog and/or Roost.

Scarf/Life Orb Latias seems to be more suited to Hyper Offensive teams, since it has Healing Wish.

Latios gets dragon dance as well as luster purge

Latias gets reflect type, sucker punch (would be a nice was to suprise kill gengar), mist ball and wish.

They are the only relevant moves.
 
Latios is really only usable in an offensive role, as any defensive or setup role is done better by Latias IMO. That being said, Latios is damn good at what it does, and that is hit hard with it's obscenely powerful Draco Meteor. However, with the advent of Specially defensive Fairy Types such as Sylveon and Florges, Latios can no longer just come in after a kill and click the "something dies" button. However, this can be seen as a good thing, as there is more versatility involved to beat specific checks. Thunderbolt is seeing a lot more use to beat Togekiss, while Latios's often forgotten Psychic STAB is finally rising up to be a decent move, 2HKOing Azumarill among other things. 110 speed is still fantastic as well.
Latios still has problems with Steel Types, specifically Ferrothorn and Aegislash, but these can be handled by other teammates. Overall Latios is still a very good pokemon in X and Y, and something to prepare for.

There is speculation that this thing gets a mega evolution... is that going to help it at all, or just be a waste of an item???
 
There are pictures, but of course they aren't officially released.

As far as the mega goes, I don't think it'll be particularly game-breaking unless they receive a shiny new ability like Gengar did. they'll most likely be in the same boat as Scizor: Adds bulk and some attacking power, but not as much as a life orb or choice specs.

A set of Draco meteor, Psyshock, Surf, Recover/Defog/HP fire works fine. Psyshock hits most fairies hard enough while surf hits heatran hard and deters aegi from switching straight in. The last move depends on what your team needs.

I kind of agree. My idea is that they realise soul dew is too good (hence why they wont release it) and they'll give it a mega. I think latios will be speedy and slightly stronger, more of a wall breaker, whilst latias will be much more bulky, a perfect calm mind sweeper. This is similar to stat differences with nidoking/nidoqueen and the gourgeist forms.

It seems the only justification for using Ice Beam is the deal with Gliscor (and Lando-T) if one finds it annoying. Still, Psyshock over Psychic as a means of dealing with Fairies and hitting the blobs for respectable damage.
