VGC Kingambit

[Overview]

* Kingambit's strong stat line, good typing, and Defiant allow it to shine as an Intimidate counter and general offensive threat. It can function at any Speed tier thanks to Sucker Punch making up for its low Speed. It is flexible against many match ups thanks to its huge bulk and ability to exert huge amounts of pressure after a Swords Dance.

* Gouging Fire is a fantastic partner for Kingambit, as it can boost its attack with Howl and keep it up on the field longer by reducing opponent's Attack with Breaking Swipe, with Kingambit shielding it from intimidate in return. Physical attackers such as Rillaboom, Ogerpon-W, and Chien-Pao all appreciate Kingambit warding off Intimidate users, with the former two providing Fake Out and Follow Me support, respectively, helping Kingambit set up a Swords Dance, and the latter boosting its damage with Sword of Ruin.

* Since Kingambit usually only runs Dark-type attacks, it struggles against Pokemon that resist it, such as the Urshifu formes and Incineroar, the latter of which matches up well against Kingambit even when boosting its Attack thanks to resisting both of its STAB types. It also has problems with Amoonguss, since it can redirect Sucker Punch with rage powder and put it to sleep quite easily, while Kingambit cannot threaten it much in return. Raging Bolt can outspeed it and use Thunderclap to attack before Sucker Punch while taking Kowtow Cleave very well, especially since most sets run Tera Fairy.

[SET]
Kingambit @ Black Glasses / Safety Goggles
Ability: Defiant
Level: 50
Tera Type: Dragon / Fairy
EVs: 244 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def / 4 SpD / 4 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Sucker Punch
- Kowtow Cleave
- Protect
- Swords Dance / Iron Head

[SET COMMENTS]

* Swords Dance significantly raises the pressure Kingambit exerts, allowing it to deal significant damage even against resisted targets. However, Iron Head can be used to cover for Fairy-types such as Flutter Mane.

* Black Glasses provides extra damage, allowing for an OHKO on Flutter Mane at +1 with Sucker Punch; Safety Goggles, however, gives Kingambit a better match-up against Amoonguss.

* Tera Dragon is chosen to grant resistances to the Ogerpon formes' STAB attacks and other metagame threats that resist Dark, such as Urshifu-R and Chi-Yu. Tera Fairy is also a strong option as a neutral typing, and it also allows Kingambit to wall Urshifu-S and other Fighting-types.

[SET]
Kingambit @ Assault Vest
Ability: Defiant
Level: 50
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 252 HP / 116 Atk / 4 Def / 20 SpD / 116 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Kowtow Cleave
- Sucker Punch
- Iron Head
- Low Kick / Tera Blast

[SET COMMENTS]

* The given EV spread allows Kingambit to survive Life Orb Ursaluna-B's Earth Power or an Ivy Cudgel from Ogerpon-H as well as avoid the 3HKO from Raging Bolt's Thunderbolt. The Speed investment allows Kingambit to outspeed Landorus in tailwind.

* Low Kick allows Kingambit to threaten Dark-Types such as Incineroar and opposing Kingambit; however, Tera Blast can also be used to cover for Dark- and Fighting-Types at the cost of needing to Terastallize.

[Overview]

* Kingambit is a slow and bulky physical attacker, and with its ability Defiant, it can be a good check into Pokemon with Intimidate. It can also function very well inside of Trick Room because of its low speed. With Assault Vest sets, it can easily survive Fairy-type moves from Flutter Mane and threaten it back with Iron Head. Meanwhile, the Swords Dance sets sacrifice that special bulk for more damage with Sucker Punch and Kowtow Cleave at +2 attack or more. (This is kind of eh? Talking about what the items let it do is supposed to be in the respective set comments. You should be explaining why Kingambit is good (Defiant, Slow TR, Sucker Punch to make up for the speed tier, bulky asf) and then some good matchups against the metagame. You mentioned Flutter Mane but can def name one or two more.)

* While generally having good coverage into most of the metagame, Kingambit struggles against Urshifu-Rapid-Strike, Chi-Yu, Iron Hands, and Incineroar, since all of them resist its STAB moves, and while Incineroar gives it a defiant boost entering the arena, it can do high damage to it with Flare Blitz. The Swords Dance variant, which tends to only run dark type moves, also has trouble against Urshifu-Single-Strike and opposing Kingambit, since it can't hit them for even neutral damage.

* Some of the most common partners for Kingambit are (It just becomes a mouthful and forces you to say the bare minimum about each.) Ogerpon-Wellspring is an excellent partner as it's which is a good check into Urshifu-Rapid-Strike, Chi-Yu and Incineroar,. (Different sentences, you confused even me lmao. Consider bringing up redirection along with Amoonguss.) Amoonguss is a great partner for redirection and the ability to keep Kingambit healthy with Pollen Puff and. Gouging Fire is a fantastic partner, to boost its attack with Howl and reduces the threat from moves like Flare Blitz with Breaking Swipe. (Feel free to expand more as they are now in separate sentences.)

Fairy allows it to resist Fighting-type moves and wall Urshifu-Single-Strike (Proper notation.) without keeping any of its previous weaknesses.

* Black Glasses provides great extra damage to it, allowing for an OHKO on Flutter Mane at +1, (Really important to mention why its being used rather than just state what it does.) while Safety Goggles allows it to stay in front of Amoonguss unthreatened, and lets it use Sucker Punch through its Rage Powder.

[Overview]

* Kingambit is a slow and bulky physical attacker, and with its ability Defiant, it can be a good check into Pokemon with Intimidate. I think my problem with this is that like, this doesen't explain why its used over other Defiant users, and the slow and bulky attacker doesen't mean much either rly, Crabomiable is a slow and bulky attacker too but its terrible. Can you explain a bit more why specifically Kingambit is used, maybe its great defensive/offensive typing, good stat spread, strong meta my, stuff like that. It can function well both inside and outside of Trick Room, because Sucker Punch makes up for its low speed. This is a set comment, not rly overview. If you really want to mention it, can you re phrase it like "STAB Sucker Punch as well as Attack boosts from Swords Dance and Defiant allow it to be a strong field presence in any scenario" or something. It can survive hits from Flutter Mane, Glimmora and Gholdengo and threaten them back with an Iron Head or a Kowtow Cleave. This is just restating the type chart. Can you come up with any other good match ups, or specific things about Kingambit that explain why its been so good since its introduction, such as punishing Intimidators? I can give you a few off the top of my head from discord which come to mind

* Kingambit struggles against Urshifu-R, Chi-Yu, Iron Hands and Incineroar, since all of them resist its STAB moves This is still just the type chart, you mention later that Gambit mostly runs only dark type attacks, can you mix something like that instead? So maybe it struggles against mons which resist its Dark-type STAB or can outspeed and tank it/hit for SE, and while Incineroar gives it a Defiant boost entering the arena, it can do high damage to it with Flare Blitz Idk how your gonna reword the above, but this can just be "Incineroar resists both of Kingambits STABs and trade positevely, even with Defiant" or something. The Swords Dance variant, which tends to only run dark type moves, also has trouble against Urshifu-S and opposing Kingambit, since it can't hit them for even neutral damage. Again, this is just the type chart. Theres a couple other major things that counter Gambit that come to mind, Ogerpon-W Follow Me, Amoonguss Spore/Rage Powder, you should definitely mention those.

BTW Switch these 2 paragraphs around, counters come last.

* Ogerpon-Wellspring is an excellent partner as it's a good check into Urshifu-R, Chi-Yu and Incineroar. Amoonguss is a great to keep Kingambit healthy with Pollen Puff and open set up opportunities with spore. Ogerpon-W and Amoonguss also function as great redirectors, protecting kingambit from aforementioned threats like Urshifu-R and Iron Hands. This is kinda just type chart, and talking at length for something that could be one sentence, not even so sure about it tho as Amoonguss isen't that common of a partner, at least compard to other mons like Chien Pao and Rilla, which feels like a major snuff! Gouging Fire is a fantastic partner, to boost its attack with Howl and reduces the threat from moves like Flare Blitz with Breaking Swipe. Kingambit also supports Gouging Fire with Defiant, since now Pokemon with Intimidate or opposing Gouging Fire can't lower its attack without giving Kingambit a boost. Kinda babbling, you can just say something like "Gouging Fire pairs well with Kingambit as it can set up Howls to boosts both Pokemon's Attack, as well as Kingambit dissuading Intimidators with Defiant" Can you mention Rillaboom/Chien Pao here? Maybe with Gouging as offensive attackers which are otherwise weak to Intimidate, Kingambit dissuading opps Incin.

[SET COMMENTS]

(Explain move choices here)

* Always survives Ivy Cudgel from Ogerpon Hearthflame, -1 Drain Punch from Iron Hands, and avoids the 2HKO from Choice Specs Flutter Mane's Dazzling Gleam. I know I said ev spread, but if its 252/252 or close to that, we dont mention it. Only if there is specific calcs or smh you ev for. You can maybe say bulk is preferred over speed or something

* Tera Dragon is picked to grant resistances to the Ogerpon formes and other metagame threats that resist Dark, such as Urshifu-R and Chi-yu. generally a strong defensive type into the current metagame, since it walls both of the most common Ogerpon formes and reduces the threat from Chi-Yu and Urshifu-R. Fairy is also a strong option as a neutral typing, also allows it allowing Kingambit to resist Fighting-type moves and wall Urshifu-S and other Fighting-types. without keeping any of its previous weaknesses. Trimming the fat, tbh tho this sounds like Tera Dragon is worse than Fairy.

* Black Glasses generally increased Kingambits offensive pressure, as well as allowing provides great extra damage to it, allowing for an OHKO on Flutter Mane at +1, however Safety Goggles gives it a better match-up into Amoonguss. while Safety Goggles allows it to stay in front of Amoonguss unthreatened, and lets it use Sucker Punch through its Rage Powder.

Just a comment on set order here, it starts with explaining Moves (Which you gotta do), then Item, then EV spread, then Tera.

* The given bulk allows it Kingambit to survive Choice Specs Tera Fairy Moonblast from Choice Speced Tera Fairy Flutter Mane under beads of ruin Beads of Ruin, -1 Drain Punch from Iron Hands and as well as an Ivy Cudgel from Ogerpon-H. The speed allows it to outspeed slow Incineroar, Iron Hands, Farigiraf and Kingambit. The Speed investment outspeeds Landorus in Tailwind. Generally we want to hit hard speed points, not stuff that is reliant on the meta. Also, Hands DP is kinda not that relevant, why I axed it. Is this spread even good now? Its pretty danm old

* Low Kick allows it Kingambit to threaten Dark-types such as Incineroar and Kingambit, however Tera Blast can also be used to cover for Dark- and Fighting-types at the cost of needing to terastallize. hit Incineroar and opposing Kingambit for super effective damage, but as an alternative, Kingambit can use Tera Blast to threaten Raging Bolt and the Urshifu formes. Trimming again, thought I'd clarify tera fairy more

I'll probs do another look over but on Discord, it looks good tho, im just trimming a lot of stuff.
[Overview]

* Kingambit's strong stat line, good typing and Defiant allow it to shine as an intimidate counter and general offensive threat. It can function well both inside and outside of Trick Room, because at any speed tier thanks to Sucker Punch makes making up for its low speed. Its flexible and doesn't depend on into many match-ups a lot because its thanks to its huge bulk and ability to exert huge amounts of pressure after a Swords Dance. allows it to stay on the field under a lot of circumstances. Just cleaning up a bit and making it more formal, I removed the tr part as sucker is generally more so for say Flutter, mons who outspeed it. Also, mentioned SD in the flexible mu parts and axed the stay on the field, its kinda obv it can do that if its got good bulk.

* Ogerpon-Wellspring is an excellent partner as it's a good check into Urshifu-R, Chi-Yu and Incineroar. Amoonguss is a great to keep Kingambit healthy with Pollen Puff and open set up opportunities with spore. Ogerpon-W and Amoonguss also function as great redirectors, protecting Kingambit from threats like Urshifu-R and Iron Hands. Gouging Fire is a fantastic partner, to boost its attack as it can boost Kingambits Attack with Howl and keep it up on the field longer by reducing opponents Attack with Breaking Swipe, with Kingambit in return shielding it from Intimidate. and reduces the threat from moves like Flare Blitz with Breaking Swipe. Kingambit also supports Gouging Fire with Defiant, since now Pokemon with Intimidate or opposing Gouging Fire can't lower its attack without giving Kingambit a boost. Since Kingambit punishes Intimidate cycling, it also pairs well with other pokemon weak to the ability, Physical attackers such as Rillaboom, Ogerpon-W and Chien-Pao. (RC) all appreciate Kingambit warding off Intimidate, with the former Rillaboom gives Kingambit Fake Out pressure to safely setup a Swords Dance or get an attack off providing Fake Out and Follow Me support respectively, helping Kingambit set up a Swords Dance, and the latter boosting its damage with Sword if Ruin. Chien-Pao's Sword of Ruin pairs incredibly well with Kingambit because of its huge attack stat, while also threatning a Sucker Punch double up. Info here is fine but theres waaay too many mons mentioned here, we allow 2-3 max, maybe 4 but thats pushing it. We dont need to mention everything otherwise we would be here all day, just the most important ones. I've kept Gouging, Pao, Ogerpon-W and Rilla and trimmed them down a lot, I still think its too much but up to you.

* Since Kingambit usually only runs Dark-Type moves, it struggles against pokemon that resist it such as the Urshifu formes and Chi-Yu Incineroar, who matches up well into Kingambit even when boosting its Attack thanks to resisting both of its STAB types I think the point you mention about Incin is pre good. It also has problems with Amoonguss, since it can redirect Sucker Punch and put it to sleep quite easily, while Kingambit cannot threaten it a lot Pokemon such as Amoonguss and Ogerpon-W that can redirect Sucker Punch are difficult to handle, as they nullify one of Kingambits strongest tools Phrase however you like but I think mentioning ogerpon-w is fair. Raging Bolt can outspeed it and use Thunderclap to attack before Sucker Punch and take while taking Kowtow Cleave very well, especially since most sets run Tera Fairy.

[SET COMMENTS]

* Swords Dance significantly raises the threat pressure Kingambit exerces exerts ?, allowing it to do significant damage with even resisted attacks even against resisted targets. Can u give an example of an ohko with SD? while However, Iron Head can instantly be used to cover for Fairy-types.OHKO Flutter Mane and Glimmora and gives it a better move to hit Urshifu-S or Fairy-Type Pokemon. You beat Glimmora anyways without Iron Head, and pretty sure even with tera poison you lose to Urshifu-S

* Bulk is preferred over speed because Kingambit wants to stay on the field for a long time to get more value out of Defiant and Swords Dance boosts, and because it already has a priority in Sucker Punch.
Kinda obvious, dont think you need this

* Black Glasses provides extra damage, allowing for an OHKO on Flutter Mane at +1 with Sucker Punch. provides great extra damage to it, allowing for an OHKO on Flutter Mane at +1, however Safety Goggles, however, gives it Kingambit a better match-up into Amoonguss.

* Tera Dragon is picked to grant resistances to the Ogerpon formes and other metagame threats that resist Dark, such as Urshifu-R and Chi-yu. Fairy is also a strong option as a neutral typing, also allowing Kingambit to wall Urshifu-S and other Fighting-types.
