Keep on Chasing that Dream – A UUFPL Epilogue
Lokix and Diancie entered the Grand Hall at the Capital. Big Snow Mantis was gone. Luigi Coin was gone. The banners had fallen, and the audience had dispersed. The stage was empty now. But who was left to rule? And more importantly… what was left to say?
Catnip Lilydeen motioned quietly, pressing a small button beneath a worn notebook near a hidden faucet in a ceiling closet. “This way,” she said. “There’s something you need to see.” The two stepped through a hidden corridor into a dimly lit chamber. Across the walls, vibrant murals pulsed with color and memory—moments not from this Games, nor the last—but all of them.

“What is this…?” Gilderoy Lokix whispered. “It’s not from my metagame…”
Catnip gave a wistful smile. “This is a reliquary. A museum. A memory of all the Games that came before. And there’s someone who can tell you the rest better than me.” With a flick of her wrist, she tossed a shimmering Beast Ball to the floor. It cracked open—and out stepped a scarred Scyther, tired but dignified. Mantigovius.
“Catnip,” he said, “it’s been a long time.”
“Not long enough,” she smirked. “But the stage is yours. They should hear it from you.”
Mantigovius looked toward the walls and began.
“A long time ago, I had a dream. A silly, stubborn dream. I wanted to make a tournament. A real one. Something special—not just for the best of the best, but for the rest of us. For the dreamers. For the ones who never got picked for UUPL. That was how I made the first UUFPL.”
He pointed to a mural showing the Blipbug City Battlegirls, arms raised in victory, and the Flapple Bottom Jeans fighting proudly behind them.
“The first Games had no name, just ambition. It was rough. I made mistakes—grave ones. I hid the ugliness, the drama, the pain. I thought I was protecting the Games, but in truth, I was lying to everyone. I was punished for it. Deservedly. Sent to exile on PS Main. But still… the people had seen something in that tournament. They remembered.”
His claw traced a silver-etched portrait labeled UUFPL II – Birth of Kings and Legends. Silicobra Kai stood tall above a field of fallen contenders. Diancie Is Unbreakable knelt proudly in second.
“But then came the second Games. I wasn’t allowed to run it alone. I needed help. That help came from a rising star - a Zarude who trusted me. His name was Monke. Together, we built something greater than before. Lavish videos. A wizard villain. A real narrative. The people didn’t just watch - it felt like they were in it. Silicobra Kai became legend. And the Diancie that had nearly won? She became something more too - a symbol.”
Then, a swirling mural of pink and green energy, a journal held aloft.
“Then came the third Games. UUFPL III – From the Journals of Captain Ursula S.V. Upshaw. I had discovered a mythical journal, and it became the basis of our entire season. We told a time-bending tale. We picked a tribute—Kelly—to embody Ursula’s journey. Gilderoy Lokix, the rogue champion, took the crown. And Black Ops Spidops fought to the bitter end.”
He paused.
“But with each success, I felt more unease. Because as our dreams got bigger, so did the pressure. What were we really creating? What were we asking from our tributes?”
He motioned to a radiant sun-like engraving: UUFPL IV – Rise of FPL-kind.
“That’s when the fourth Games changed everything. A Tyrunt, ancient in nature who went by the name Akerogua, joined as co-host, and we took inspiration from ancient civilizations. This time, the battles were not just fierce—they were philosophical. Azelf on the Shelf emerged as a symbol of strategy, of psychic clarity. The Three Flamigos pushed them harder than anyone expected. But Azelf endured, and won. And in their win, I saw a spark. Not ambition. Not ego. But purpose.”
He took a deep breath. His voice softened.
“Now we are here. The Quarter Quell. UUFPL V. The grand finale. Diancie Is Unbreakable, once again in the finals—this time against her greatest rival yet: Gilderoy Lokix. The circle is closing.”
He looked toward the ceiling where lights shimmered like stars.
“I made these Games because I wanted to give others what I never had. A chance. A team. A story. But along the way, I got caught up in the spectacle. In trying to prove something. That I was right. That I could make something unforgettable. And maybe I did…”
He turned back toward Lokix and Diancie.
“But these Games—all of them—were never about me. They weren’t about crowns or power or records. They were about all of you. The players. The tributes. The ones who chose to show up and play. Because it’s not winning that matters. It’s that we played. That we had fun.”
Mantigovius turned slowly to face Lokix, Diancie, and Catnip, his wings twitching faintly, his eyes glinting with memory.
“If we forget that… if we forget the joy, the laughter, the nonsense names and silly jokes… then we lose the point. We lose everything. And we can’t let that happen. Not ever.
“You see, we never joined Smogon because we wanted to prove we were the best at everything. We weren’t warriors seeking crowns. We weren’t emperors looking for land. We were kids. Dreamers. Loners. Try-hards. We joined because we wanted to play some games. We wanted to build teams and make friends and click funny moves and say dumb things in the chat. We wanted to see our names in replays. We wanted to feel something.
"And somewhere along the way… we lose that. We lose the purpose of what these games—and all the other ones on this site—are really for. We lose the fact that this isn't about stats, or spreadsheets, or who drafted who, or who made one bad bring in Week Three. This isn't about tiering policy, or Discord drama, or forum clout. This is about fun. It was always supposed to be fun.
“But we forget that because we care so much. And don’t get me wrong—it’s okay to care. It’s beautiful to care. That’s what makes this magical. But when we let that care become poison, when we let our egos strangle the joy out of the thing we loved most, then what are we even fighting for anymore?
"These games are sacred. Not because they crown champions. But because they connect us. Because a boy in Poland and a girl in Texas and a nonbinary player in Chile can all come together and laugh over a match where someone used Prankster TWave on a Dark-type. Because someone who just wanted to sub in for fun can end up in the finals. Because a team of fifteen strangers can become a family and leave their team discord server open several years after the tour ends.
“I made UUFPL to give people a chance. But I stayed because I saw what those chances became. Legends born. Rivals made. Stories written. You all took what I built and turned it into something I could never have imagined. You rose up the ranks and actually made it into the more prestigious tours. And because of all of you, the rest of the site has followed suit too.
“So, if there’s one thing I’ve learned through all this, through failure, through redemption, through war and wizardry and the worst matchup fishing you've ever seen, it's one really basic principle. It's that this whole thing only works if we let it stay fun. That's all it's about. We want to have fun. And that even goes beyond UUFPL, beyond Smogon, beyond mons. That's just life. That's all we could ever hope for, to enjoy it.
"So when the salt rises, and the logs are too long, and someone makes a bad power ranking and the world feels like it's ending, just stop. Honestly. Breathe. Remember why you logged on in the first place. Remember the first time someone said GG and actually meant it. Remember your first replay. Your first team tour. Your first friend. And never let go of that. Because as long as there is one person out there willing to log in, click 'find battle,' and smile... then this game—this league—this community—it lives on. And that is the real victory."
Catnip stepped forward. “So what do we do now?”
Mantigovius turned to her, and then to the reliquary. “We remember. We tell the story. And we keep playing. Until the end of time.”
