I spent a lot of time sitting at the bottom of the ladder, testing old favorites out, and making and remaking teams. This team is the fruit of my efforts. I'm not too savvy in competitive terms, but I do have a knack for playing Pokemon, one of my favorite games from childhood. Something in this team works, but like I said, I'm not eloquent enough in competitive terms to voice what it is; that's where you guys come in. I need your help in identifying what about this team works, and what needs to be changed. I'm open to pretty much all changes, but please refer to the disclaimer below. My team has taken a lot of change, and it will take a lot more. Thanks for taking the time to rate my team, as it is GREATLY appreciated!
DISCLAIMER: While I am open to almost all suggestions, my dream is to ascend the ladder in a team that can also play on an actual 3DS in an actual tournament. This means that item clause applies, along with NO legendaries on the team, etc.
The Team:

Breloom @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Poison Heal
EVs: 124 HP / 132 Spd / 252 Atk
Adamant Nature
- Substitute
-Seed Bomb Leech Seed
- Stone Edge
-Focus Punch Drain Punch
Many-a-time, Breloom has saved my team. With the combination of Poison Heal and Leech Seed, substitute becomes the equivalent of Protect, and he becomes invulnerable to status. When predicted correctly, he checks many threats simply because of Leech Seed. Stone Edge is for coverage. I've played around with Rock Slide, but it didn't pack the punch I needed it to. I also ran Drain Punch instead of Focus Punch for the health gain, but he usually sits at 98%-100% health anyways. The only problem with Focus Punch is the negative priority; it lets them get through my substitute. You're probably thinking: "Where is the Spore?". Well, this team originally ran T-Wave on lots of my 'mon, so I opted not to use it. I have had great success even without T-Wave or Spore, so I didn't bother changing it.
Xatu @ Light Clay
Ability: Magic Bounce
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 HP / 4 SDef
Timid Nature
-Reflect Heat Wave
-Light Screen Future Sight
-Thunder Wave Toxic
- Roost
"Use Espeon!". Yeah, haven't heard that one before. My reason for opting for Xatu over Espeon is for one reason: Roost. The ability to switch in and switch out at will without having to worry about health is a HUGE benefit.T-Wave is a huge help to this team, as none of them are renowned for their speed. The screens are self explanatory: they help Gyarados set up with much more ease. Heat Wave handles Skarm, while Future Sight aids Chandelure against Gliscor. Toxic is to break down walls that depend on residual damage. I have tried using Future Sight instead of Roost or T-Wave to help against Substitutes and Skarmory, but not with much success.
Aromatisse (F) @Big Root Leftovers
Ability: Aroma Veil
EVs: 152 Def / 252 HP / 4 SAtk / 100 SDef
Bold Nature
- Aromatherapy
- Wish
-Draining Kiss Moonblast
-Calm Mind Protect
This spot was originally for Blissey, but I found the renowned Special Wall wasn't all she was talked up to be. I switched it for Aromatisse as a cleric. With Aromatherapy and Wish, she is a prime Cleric, especially with her imperviousness to Taunt.Calm Mind lets her double as a special wall, and helps her gain MASSIVE health with Draining Kiss. Moonblast is for extra damage, while Protect helps her hold out while Wish activates or for more HP gain from Leftovers. I need some help with her EVs, but otherwise, she has done fairly well.
Gyarados-Mega @ Gyaradosite
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 252 Spd / 252 Atk / 4 HP
Adamant Nature
- Aqua Tail
- Earthquake
- Dragon Dance
-Iron Head Bounce
Ah yes, the mighty Gyarados. Popular since RBY, it's no wonder why he finds his spot on so many teams. This set is self explanatory in purpose, but the moves might need a bit of justification. I opted for Aqua Tail over Waterfall because I think the extra accuracy in Waterfall isn't worth the drop in 10 Base Power. Earthquake covers ZardX, along with many other potential threats, along with the fact that it pairs perfectly with Mold Breaker, allowing him to hit Rotom-W with ease.Iron Head covers his Mega's new weakness; fairy. Bounce covers the killer Venusuar that no one else on my team can seem to kill.
Chandelure @Leftovers Assault Vest
Ability: Infiltrator
EVs: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / 252 Spd
Modest Nature
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Flamethrower
- Energy Ball
- Shadow Ball
One of the few Pokemon that I actually liked from BW, I chose Chandelure because of his ability to counter Gliscor. With a massive SpA, and access to Infiltrator, he is optimal for this role. I am considering switching Leftovers for Assault Vest, but it's just an idea. He hasn't filled his single role as much as I would like, so this spot is wide open for suggestions. Assault Vest is there to add some bulk, because I can't use the Leftovers due to item clause (refer to the disclaimer).
Hitmontop (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 HP / 4 SDef
Adamant Nature
- Mach Punch
- Bullet Punch
- Rapid Spin
- Fake Out
One of my favorite Pokemon with one of my favorite sets, Prioritops is fun to play with. His access to three Technician/Life Orb boosted priority moves makes him an ideal Revenge Killer, and his ability to clear hazards makes his spot on the team obvious. Even if he isn't able to kill his target, he does enough damage to seriously weaken it. He's bulkier than he looks, and I've loved playing with him.
WEAKNESSES:
Gliscor is a major threat to my team because of his ability to spread Toxic. My only check is Chandelure, who can't switch in on an Earthquake.
While Skarmory hates my Xatu, there's not much Xatu can do in the long run. Too many of my 'Mon are crippled or killed by his Brave Bird, and as soon as Xatu switches out, he is free to set up SR.
While I prefer not to use Legendaries, I recognize that other's are not limited by this. Heatran is a threat to my team because of their massive weakness to Fire attacks. Most of my 'mon are frail enough that even if they take neutral damage from his attacks, they are still crippled.
Edit: None of my 'mon had the ability to counter Mega Venusuar, so I opted to change Xatu's set away from a screener. I have yet to test it, but it should do well in it's role.
Conclusion:
So there it is. My team, the fruit of my efforts. Again, I'm open to changes, I just ask that you honor my disclaimer, and post civilly. Thanks for your time and effort!
