There comes Chef malinowski, who made a bolder move by using two of the Legendary Birds. While Iron Chef Euphonos didn't manage to use his biggest trump card, his Frost Tree managed to tear majority of malinowski's team apart. GG!

I actually built this team a few days ago, wanting to have a team that features Zapdos in it. Naturally, that was the first mon I put on the team. I wanted Aboma as my mega because this team was going to lean more towards balance than offense and wouldn't have a scarfer, so the priority Aboma offers was a great plus. It also serves as a better water check than Zapdos. I gave Zapdos HP Ice because I have Aboma here, and because I'm more annoyed with gligar and mence than pert. The reason this team is "balanced" is because of the next two pokes, Blissey and quag. Blissey takes just about all special attacks and fit just fine as my rocker. I wanted to give Quag a try and it fit perfectly on my team. The rest of the team supports its weaknesses, while Quag serves as an answer for set up mons that would otherwise destroy me (Though I mainly decided to add this because I needed a ground type). Curse over toxic or what not because standard Reuniclus decimates my team otherwise. Next came what started as my hazard control core, but was later tweaked; Salamence and Cobalion. These two make a pretty good offensive hazard control core with their type synergy and offensive presence. Coba had rocks at first, but I later decided that it would fit better on Blissey because that would enable Coba to run Stone Edge.

Calm Nature
- Thunder Wave
- Tri Attack

- Magic Coat

Chairman edit: The team attempts to spread status, mainly paralysis from Porygon2 and burn from Moltres (and possibly Suicune) so that slower and more powerful wall breakers can step in and let Unburden Sceptile and Bulk Up Hitmontop sweep. Moltres was chosen over Articuno or Zapdos because electric coverage in the tier seems pretty meh when I have grass and rocks, plus neither of them can spread burns to things that hate burns.

Timid Nature

When I saw the ingredients, I thought why not just make a BirdSpam team. I decided to roll with Spec Zapdos and LO Moltres. The former's STABs are not as strong as the latter, so the Specs would boost its ability to punch holes. It also allows me to run Volt Switch to do some scouting. Both of these Pokemon have a hard time breaking both Bulky Rock-types and the Special Walls in this tier, so I picked Heracross, which conveniently threatens the aforementioned Pokemon (Rhyperior, Blissey, Umbreon, Cresselia) bar Florges. Weakness-wise, I needed a Rock resist and a Electric-resist that wasn't threatened by Mamo, so I went with Swampert, which has great typing synergy with the secret ingredients. At this point, I needed something that could threaten Mamoswine and Florges, take Water and Ice moves, and provide hazard removal for the birds, so I went with Offensive Defog Empoleon. At this point, I realized I could not deal with a lot of the set-up sweepers in the tier, so I went with Ditto as a blanket check to most of them.

The biggest issues for the team was that although the two birds have great offensive synergy, they don't have the best defensive synergy and thus have a very hard time transitioning into one another, especially with hazards up.

Moltres @ Life Orb
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Fire Blast
- Hurricane
- Will-O-Wisp
- Roost

Zapdos @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 248 HP / 236 Def / 24 Spe
Bold Nature
- Volt Switch
- Hidden Power [Grass]
- Defog
- Roost

Absol-Mega @ Absolite
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Knock Off
- Sucker Punch
- Play Rough

Swampert @ Leftovers
Ability: Torrent
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 Spe
Relaxed Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Scald
- Earthquake
- Roar

Haxorus @ Yache Berry
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Outrage
- Poison Jab
- Earthquake
- Dragon Dance

Whimsicott @ Leftovers
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 Spe
Bold Nature
- Moonblast
- Stun Spore
- Encore
- U-turn

When I saw the ingredients, I noticed how Zapdos and Moltres could get along together. Defensive Zapdos makes a good job keeping rocks away from the field, while Moltres could use some openings from volt switch to starting breaking opposing teams, since it's fuckin hard to switch into Moltres' STABs in this tier. I chose HP Grass on Zapdos to take out Swamperts, while Will-O-Wisp on Moltres can burn incoming foes, especially Mega Aero, that could resist both STABs. Since nor Zapdos or Moltres enjoy coming on hazards, I decided to give my team a second form of hazard control that could apply some more offensive pressure. Mega Absol fits real nice, as Moltres and Zapdos put some real pressure over fairies and steel types, the premiers MegaSol switch in. After an SD, Mega Absol become very hard to stop, so it's a great wincon overall. Since I didn't have hazards of my own, I decided to use Swampert since it have a good synergy with Zapdos and could spread some burns with Scald or rack some damage with roar + rocks. I thought I could put some more offensive pressure right here, so I made an usual choice and decided to put DD Haxorus on this team. It's a strong mon that can help wallbreak or even clean in a late game situation. It could also put some more pressure over fairies and steel types for a MegaSol sweep late game. To finish things up, my last mon was Whimsicott. Whimsi gives me a much needed answer to water types like Ferg/Sharpedo and to dragons like Hydreigon and Mence, that otherwise could simply break thru my team. Whimsicott's utility can really help, stoping my opp momentum so any of my threats can have an easy time comin' in. A last moment change is Yache Berry on Haxorus. This team is kind weak to ice types like Kyurem, Aboma or Mamoswine. I have nothing to switch into those things so I decided to put Yache on it so I could setup and kill those monster or just stop Hax from being revenge killed by Mamo's Shard.

I built this team around CB Zapdos primarily and Moltres as a Secondary focus. As such, it needed good anti hazard, unfortunately I couldn't fit the amount I truly wanted (3 defoggers/spinners). This team struggles against various threats, but that didn't stop me. After a good bit of testing, I found that CB Zapdos was definitely a strange, but great choice. It dealt massive damage against various enemies not quite knowing what to do to it. I would have preferred better coverage though. Shaymin was among the most necessary to have in the team due to its role as a grass type as well as a special attacker. Mamo was mainly used for coverage. Mence and Blastoise serve their role as anti hazard. Apart from that, there isn't really much else to go over. This team went through several revisions before I realized I could never confidently say this was a good team. If only I was better at building, but I'm a bit rusty and bad.

You want to see their teams in action?
They're here!

You may now vote for the most favorite team in terms of the three categories: Creativity, Use of Theme, and Effectiveness. You can also vote for one team in different categories. Here's the template on how to vote:

Creativity: Player X. [insert reason here.]

Effectiveness: Player X. [insert reason here.]

You have until
DECEMBER 1, TUESDAY, 7:00 PM EST
to cast your vote on this thread who are
the most awe-inspiring,
the most essential,
and
the best-tasting
dishes ever witnessed this round!

Creativity: While many of the chefs did wonderful jobs preparing their dishes, what I saw was comfort, tried and true. And while comfort does have its place, there was one dish that made me look back twice. The interesting texture of an underused mega evolution, which does an amazing job of checking the most fragrant of the opponent's secret ingredient, along with a fishy aftertaste from an unexpected Quagsire means my vote is cast for xVarsity for the Creativity Category.

Use of theme: This week's theme being the Legendary Bird Trio, the Use of Theme award goes to the team in which the Secret Ingredient is the crux of the team: no slap-ons will do! While some teams seemed to do very well with adding a Zapdos or a Moltres, and many teams seemed to benefit quite immensely from it, it was malinowski's team that revolved around the Secret Ingredient. Every member of his team was carefully constructed to supplement the secret ingredient, instead of trying to hide it, or add it as a garnish. It really allowed not one but TWO of the Legendary Ingredients to shine throughout his dish, and clinch the prize.

Effectiveness: However, from the videos watched, information gathered, and teams analyzed, the final judgement: the Effectiveness Award (in my opinion, the most important category) goes to... xVarsity with the incredibly haxxy win over LilOU win over the chairman as the cinche. Chef xVarsity knew the team so well that it was easy to overcome 4 of the 5 Iron Chefs incumbent, conquering flavors as exotic as Mr Mime, as bold and umami as Steelix, as seductive as Linda, and as familiar as Salamence. It was the team knowledge, and battle strategy put together with the right ingredients that made this dishes aftertaste one of sweet victory.

Creativity: @Nightingales. The sceptile and hitmontop sets forced me to place my vote on Nightingales. While other teams had some innovation, they felt like they were forced on just for the sake of innovation as the rest of the team became standard. Nightingales team was definitely really cool because the innovation felt like it was actually part of the team's persona. It also had some cute moves like Iron Tail Krookodiel

Use of theme: @Eaglehawk Birdspam defines the legendary birds and he did just that. Powerful hitters like Specs Zapdos and Life Orb Moltres give bird spam a new meaning and really used to team as the focal point of the offensive attack.

Effectiveness: @XVarsity . While the team looks unorthodox, his 4-1 record against the esteemed Iron Chefs is proof that his team is the most effective of the lot. It is also actually fundamentally sound on a closer look. I really want to give this award to Malinowski because his team was good as well, but the ice weakeness feels like it may prove to be to crippling at times.

As someone who has not only been around this thread since day one and was even one of the first judges (so many teams D:) I have to say this is the best I have seen this thread, I am really glad this thread was not only revived but revived with some hype. Also r0ady is bad lol

LESS THAN 10 HOURS AND 30 MINUTES REMAINING FOR PHASE 2.

Yes. I really expected the votes to turn out very fast, but, I guess not...

Creativity: I have to give my vote to Nightingales because the fact that he isn't using Mega Sceptile (or any Mega at all for that matter) is really heat plus all those outlandish things such as Iron Tail Krook, Bulk Up Hitmontop, and Magic Coat Porygon2, lol.

Use of Theme: I have to give this vote to my man eaglehawk. The fact that this was automatically a tie for me in my books with the three teams who used more than one burd makes this seem like a difficult choice; however, I like how eaglehawk's team comes together to take advantage of the "Burdspam" (although eww at the Ditto lol).

Effectiveness: That being said, I feel like the most effective team of all the submissions has to go to xVarsity as it looks like something I, a player known for good ass balance, would build. It has everything a "standard" balance team needs, but with a bit of flair (Stone Edge Cob and Quag as the physical wall).

Creativity: malinowski. When I taste a dish I'm not looking for creativity in flashing carnival ride ferris wheels made of deep fried starmies with sparklers strapped to each arm. That sort of gimmic just does not make the translation from plate to palate and while some dishes can go from foul food to gourmet goodness with a chefs unique twist I saw nothing that really titillated my tastebuds in terms of individual sets this week. In terms of overall creativity in plating and design though I have to give a nod to malinowski for his delicious and harmonious blend of uncommon mon's into a homey and familiar tasting dish straight from momma aggro's oven.
Use of Theme: LotusHOV. With 3 teams packing the zapdos moltress core and no real outstanding incorporation of hard support for birdspam to really work them into the dish I have to go with the man who brought a third bird in mence for maximum poultry plating.
Effectiveness: xVarsity. While this dish is a bit bland for my taste a 4-1 record speaks for itself.

(Edit: I damn near gave creativity to xvarsity just for finally building a team without a florges on it :p)

Creativity: LotusHOV. Come on, man, tell me you're not jealous about that CB Zapdos.
Use of Theme: malinowski. There were a lot of teams that used the double bird core, but this usage is my favorite. The birds play off each other really well, supporting both each other and the team as a whole.
Effectiveness: xVarsity. Kind of waffled between this team and malinowski's team, but in the end I have to give the nod to xVarsity. It's just a solid balance team with answers to a lot of common threats. I worry about how it will handle wallbreakers that can push past both Quagsire and Blissey, such as Adamant Lucario, but it still seems like the most effective overall dish for the current meta.

EDIT: Actually, Euphonos, if Iron Chefs are not supposed to do community judging in addition to judging the dishes in detail, let me know and I'll delete this post.

15 MINUTES REMAINING.

I'm going to consider Iron Chef Hogg's vote at this time because of the low turn-out of votes. (Actually, Iron Chefs aren't supposed to vote because of the fulfillment of a higher role.)

The winner for this round is...

Chef xVarsity!

Chef xVarsity's exemplary four wins in the Iron Chef challenges (with one loss) granted him the upper hand, plus the fact that the UU community deserved him as the best tasting dish ever made this round!
. . . . . . .

Here are the scores and the consolidated comments from our beloved Iron Chefs!

xVarsity: 14.5 + 8 - 1 = 21.5
CREATIVITY: 3 / 5
It doesn't look quite groundbreaking to one of the Iron Chef's eyes to become one of the most creative teams, as most of the sets in the team, along with the Blissey + Quagsire core, are getting more popular nowadays. That Iron Chef did salute, however, to the unconventional use of some sets such as Discharge Zapdos, Curse Quagsire and Stone Edge Cobalion to deal with majority of the threats most of the time.

USE OF THEME: 3.5 / 5
The Iron Chefs find the Zapdos in this team acting like an offensive supporting cast to most of the Pokemon in the team through dealing heavy damage and (hopefully) providing paralyses against key threats, which is a good take on how that Pokemon should be used.

EFFECTIVENESS: 8 / 10
This is no doubt one of the exemplars to a Balanced team as everything in the team synergizes very well both offensively and defensively. What holds it back from making this team a considerably high grade in this criterion is the lack of a prompt switch-in to wall breakers such as Mixed Infernape (as Iron Chef R0ady exploited in the match), and Adamant Lucario and Feraligatr who are able to get past Quagsire even without the boosts. Through smart plays and a hint of gut feelings, this team can reach to greater heights.
eaglehawk: 15.5 + 2 = 17.5
CREATIVITY: 4 / 5
This team isn't groundbreaking enough to become one of the most creative teams, but the uncommon sets employed such as Specs Zapdos, Flame Orb Heracross, Offensive Defog Empoleon, and of course, Ditto, will warrant a fairly high score in this criterion.

USE OF THEME: 4.5 / 5
This team made use of both Zapdos and Moltres to complement each other's offensive capabilities, which exemplifies the spirit of the secret ingredients. Because this team has the essence of the Legendary Birds, a considerably high score will be granted in this criterion.

EFFECTIVENESS: 7 / 10
It is very understandable that the biggest issue lies on how that team needs to withstand numerous attacks, given Empoleon is the only one that can "wall" most attacks with ease; and without constant recovery will end up being overwhelmed by numerous wall-breakers such as Porygon-Z and Kyurem. Despite that, the offensive synergy of the team is very great such that it needs to keep the momentum going.
malinowski: 14.5 + 4 - 1 = 17.5
CREATIVITY: 3 / 5
While there's Will-O-Wisp on offensive Moltres, Volt Switch on a defensive Zapdos, and Yache Berry on Haxorus to survive at least an Ice attack after a set-up, the rest of the team uses fairly standard options. As such, an average score is given in this criterion.

USE OF THEME: 4.5 / 5
This is a very different take on how Zapdos and Moltres are used. This is considered to be one of the teams favored by one of the Iron Chefs as the team manages to incorporate the Legendary Birds alongside two wall-breaking Pokemon such as Mega Absol and Haxorus, which warrants a relatively high score in this criterion.

EFFECTIVENESS: 7 / 10
The team seems pretty solid on paper and uses two Legendary Birds in a cool and effective way. Defensive Zapdos with Volt Switch is incredibly annoying to face, especially when it grants free switchins into wallbreakers such as Moltres or Haxorus. It also handles common threats pretty nicely; nevertheless, one of the Iron Chefs sees that a lot of pressure lies onto Swampert, as it has to check multiple things at once such as Entei/Aero/VoltTurn/Mamoswine, finally being overwhelmed easily and letting holes in the defensive backbone of the team.
LotusHOV: 12.5 - 1 = 11.5
CREATIVITY: 4 / 5
While this team have unusual flavors such as Offensive SubSeed Shaymin, Offensive Life Orb Moltres with Will-O-Wisp, and Defensive Salamence with Draco Meteor, Choice Band Zapdos is the main draw of the team's massive creativity points.
USE OF THEME: 4.5 / 5
This is another team that incorporated Zapdos and Moltres to its offensive capabilities (with Choice Band slapping on Zapdos is a huge plus). As such, a relatively high score will be given here.
EFFECTIVENESS: 4 / 10
The team lacked a way to deal with the current metagame trends. No Draco Meteor switch-ins is what some Iron Chefs notice at first glance, as well as no reliable answers to Mega Beedrill + [a Volt Switch user]. Also, even though there was an attempt to incorporate hazard removal, none of those synergize with the Pokemon in the team weak to Stealth Rock; once Stealth Rock is up, the team will be put in an extremely bad position where it will be hard to find opportunities to clear hazards. Finally, one Iron Chef said that he didn't see a purpose behind the team. It looks like the best thing that team can do is sponge attacks and hit back, hoping to kill the opposing team.

Here's a note from fellow Iron Chef LilOu: Don't be discouraged, though, friend. Take the advice given and your teambuilding skill will improve. Keep it up :]
Nightingales: 11.5 + 2 - 3 = 10.5
CREATIVITY: 4 / 5
A fairly unexpected direction to take, with some unique sets such as Bulk Up Rapid Spin Hitmontop and Magic Coat Porygon2, and a few rarely seen options like bulky Krookodile and Unburden SD Sceptile.

USE OF THEME: 2.5 / 5
One of the Iron Chefs appreciates Moltres for the way it can break down some of Suicune and Sceptile's checks; however, he finds it slapped--it's just kind of there. The team instead seems to be built mostly around Sceptile and Suicune, making Moltres just a supporting actor. It's not going completely unused, but this does not feel like a team built around Moltres or the legendary birds; it feels like a team that happens to have Moltres, and could just as easily have swapped it out for another wallbreaker.

EFFECTIVENESS: 5 / 10
Honestly this team has potential, but there are a lot of basic problems with it. Some sets simply don't work well, such as that Krook set, which is cute if it can bop a fairy but ends up being outsped by most of the things you'd expect Krook to wall. (Plus, Krook has kind of terrible typing for a wall.) Similarly, that Hitmontop set looks like it is rarely ever going to be effective, and I'd much rather see you focus on either spinning, with Toxic or something over Bulk Up to hit Ghosts, or focus on offenses, and have you drop Rapid Spin. There are also some fiddly things that can be changed as well. Roar Suicune needs some Speed to properly function, the EV spreads are mostly pretty basic without paying attention to hitting specific numbers, and there are even some missing EVs. While none of these are huge problems, the accumulation of such problems prevent it from wanting to see this with a higher score.
. . . . . . .

Thirty minutes from now, a new secret ingredient will be revealed!

Here's a spoiler: since Christmas season is around the corner, one Pokemon with a certain type will be featured in the next four rounds! Also, it will be core-heavy, so watch out. =)

The secret ingredient for this round is...

SPIDER-PIG!

596.gif

This round is inspired after R0ady and Euphonos won one of the team building competitions in the Underused Subforum and this installment of Iron Chef replicates the fruit of their success! This round requires participants to run two Pokemon: Mamoswine and Galvantula!

These two Pokemon are extremely effective in dealing most Pokemon in the Underused tier thanks to their most devastating STAB attacks! How will the chefs incorporate Mamoswine and Galvantula into their dishes?

Note that Mamoswine's and Galvantula's sets are blank; therefore you may devise some EV spreads and choose your moves at your discretion.

to complete your dishes to be sent to the Chairman via PM
and
to challenge any of the five Iron Chefs to be updated with wins/losses and replays in the thread.

Allez, cuisine!

I'm in for this round. I've been waiting to use Galv for so long, but I've never had the time ( Or I'm lazy, 50 50)
