Hidden Power

I was looking at some of the builds and I was wondering if there is any way to make sure the move type of Hidden Power is the one you need?

Finding out what power a hidden power is on the other hand is a fair bit tougher. Having other moves in the vicinity of 70 power helps to make a comparison.

Yeah, that's true. For example to figure out my Typhlosion's Hidden Power I went up against a Zubat, Hariyama, Oddish and Numel. First it was the Numel which it did normal damage on. Then I went and faught Hariyama. Now keep in mind this is in Emerald version. So I faught it, and it also did normal damage. But at that point I also used Flame Wheel, and realized, that Flame Wheel did just about as much damage as Hidden Power. So... eventually Hariyama whirlwinded me out. Then I went against Zubat, it was Super-Effective. Zubat is weak against: Ice, Electric, Rock and Psychic. Can't be Electric because it affected Numel (Fire/Ground). Can't be Rock because it did normal damage on Hariyama (Fighting, which is resistant against rock) and it can't be psychic because it was normal against Hariyama. So it was Ice, which was then confirmed by attacking an Oddish. And comparing it with Flame Wheel, it actually did a bit more damage against that Hariyama, so I was certain that it was pretty strong, higher than 60 Base Power.

An easier way to find out your type though, is by going against Kecleon. As Kecleon's color change will immediately change it's type to match your Hidden Power's type. I later checked on Serebii, and that was the case. It was a 65 Base Power Hidden Power Ice.

But in order to make sure you actually have a good Hidden Power - that is, one with close to 70 power, you actually have to figure out its IVs, then plug those into a Hidden Power calculator. Look in the DP resource thread for these.

Also, if you Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed IVs are all odd, then your Hidden Power's base power is at least 65.

But you need Diamond in order to do that, since Kecleon is only in Pokemon Diamond. He is found by PokeRadar in the foggy grass area of Route 210...................

Or you could just get your own Kecleon, and attack it with the Hidden Power you want tested in a Vs. Seeker 2 vs 2 battle.

Unfortunately though, that will only tell you Hidden Power's type though, and not it's base power.

Weird, sure Typhlosion has a higher base SA, but flame wheel gets STAB. Also Hariyama could've had the ability Thick Fat so that'd half both moves. For HP to do so much damage there must've been some significant IV discrepancy or EV investment.
