Challenge Heal Block - Playing Crystal without pokecenter or pokemarts

Hello guys ! I've tried many challenges in most Pokemon games because it makes the games way harder and that's a lot of fun to think outside of the box. Some challenges were "classical" like completing the adventure log in Mystery Dungeon Red, it took lots of times between recruiting everything (Quick save manip still helps a lot in that regard), finding Munchlax and making everything leader (this really takes forever but at least seeing every design makes up for it) and I managed to do it after around 150 hours. No experience challenge was also cool to test in gen 1-4 and while difficult, it's always great to use overlook things like Swords Dance Baton Pass Mawile in ADV. No damage challenge is also something I experimented but it's not as fun because it's more about grinding a lot and it requires less strategy and more OHKOing while outspeeding everything.

My favourite challenge remains beating the game without healing. This was done in this forum on both Yellow and Sapphire and it was fun to both read and try it. These generations are harder because they are few free heal, with just a forced heal after the very first battle. I still wanted to try this in another generation, in this case GSC because it's, in my opinion the best "old" generation. While the story isn't as good as others, Johto region is great, it has the best sprites (especially in Gold and Crystal), best themes and arguably best post-game (outside of maybe Emerald). Kanto will be especially fun in this challenge because in spite of having the worst gym leaders, Blue and Red are going to be difficult. There are several forced heal so I'm going to add a few new rules, detailed later to make this harder.

For this challenge, I'll play on Pokemon Crystal because animations on Pokemon are cooler and seeing the location when entering it is great. There isn't any relevant difference between Gold, SIlver and Crystal for this type of challenge anyway.

Here are the rules regarding health, Pokemart and PPs :
  • No healing at Pokecenter or using a PC.
  • No buying at Pokemarts (unlike RBY it's not neccessary to buy something there to complete the game).
  • No whiting out as it would defy the principle of not healing.
  • No healing items like Berry or Potion.
  • Gaining PPs is forbidden thus it's not possible to use Ether or Elixir.
  • No re-teaching as it would be too easy to forget a move and re-learn it afterwards.

And few rules I added to make up for the presence of several forced heal :
  • Using items is forbidden outside of TMs and HMs. This means no Pokeball nor in-battle items like X-Speed. Held items are still allowed as long as they don't heal.
  • Buying something in Game Corner isn't allowed as it's really similar to Pokemon Shop.
  • It's allowed to save and reset as it changes nothing and makes the challenge quicker
  • Likewise, resetting clock is allowed because waiting several days is pointless.

Without further ado, let's get started!

New Bark Town

The first things to do is choosing the time and day. It's not that important but I decided that Sunday morning would be great because it's the day to obtain the Return TM, one of the best one. With that done, there is the important choice of the starter let's see the options here :
  • Chikorita is in spite of its good design well-known for being among the worst starters. The game despises it as it has type disadvantage against Falkner (that's winnable but losing too much health isn't recommended in this kind of challenge), Busy, Morty, Jasmine outside Steelix, Pryce and Clair. Whitney, probably the hardest gym leader of the region is hard to beat with Chikorita too and rival is troublesome too. I don't know why the game hates Chikorita so much but I won't pick it for this challenge.
  • Cyndaquil is way better than Chikorita because except for Whitney which is roughly the same, it fares way better against other gym leaders as well as Rival and has a really strong Elite 4 performance. The problem is that Cyndaquil has a below-average mid-game before getting Flame Wheel and struggles too much in key battles like against Sandra for instance, thus I won't choose it.
  • Totodile is without a doubt the best starter in this generation. Except for Rival's starter, it has no outrigh bad matchup and can quickly walk through the game assuming a high level. Whitney is a way better fight and as is Clair and these are the only stricly hard gyms. Even Kanto looks better because Ferraligatr can easily dispatch Arcanine and Rhydon from Blue who may prove to be difficult.
The choice is easy here, it's going to be Totodile. Adding to reasons mentionned, it has its uses as an HM Slave because no Pokeballs means the ability to learn moves like Waterfall or Whirlpool is incredibly limited (Red Gyarados is always great in that regard but won't be obtainable for instance). Now, I had to save to get good DVs because with so scarce team options, every member will be extremly important. I was looking at speedrun (where Totodile is used in GS) and guides advices to have at least 12 Attack, 11 Defense and 10 Speed so I aimed for it. While I won't use the same strategies as X-items are forbidden, having a benchmark is always great. I got lucky and 2 tries were enough to get the good one.

Named it A because it's the shortest name and it's A-tier in the viability ranking thread lol. DVs ranges are the follow :

Road to Falkner

In this game, you get a free heal after talking to Mr. Pokemon and one after beating Silver thus I tried to grind. I looked at the options available to me and most Pokemon looks similar for the grinding. Hoppip is the safest option because it has no attacking moves but it only has a 5% encounter rate so it's better to not rely on just encountering as it's too time consuming. While at level 5, I mostly tried to find level 2 Pokemon to get the 2HKO as opposed to the 3HKO because Totodile is going to be overwhelmed otherwise. I first fought a level 2 Rattata (it was perfect as it used Tail Whip) and a level 4 Caterpie which was a 3HKO. I then got lucky and encountered a Hoppip and afterwards a level 3 Caterpie, getting me to level 7. I then faced many others Caterpie and Weedle while avoiding Pidgey because it only has Tackle whereas the bugs are a 50/50 between String Shot and Tackle/Poison Sting. Once out of Scratch's PPs, Rage was usable as it 3HKOes without getting hit and 2HKOes if getting hit. Totodile was quickly earning experience and from level 8 onwards, it was easier as Totodile outspeeds even after a String Shot Caterpie and Weedle. Then, when I had no attacking move at level 10, nearing level 11, I got the first free heal. I continued the grind after the free heal and it was easier as starting from level 12, Totodile could OHKO level 3 Pokemon and at level 13 it could OHKO level 4 Pokemon. During the training, I tried to use every PP but 2 for Scratch in the optic of the rival fight and got to level 15. Ironically, I encountered 4 Hoppip (including 2 in a row) while having only Water Gun PP left and just fled as Water Gun doesn't kill. Then, Totodile easily defeated Chikorita with 2 Scratch as it used Growl. Things were great from this point as I had a level 15 Totodile before fighting the second trainer fully healed. I didn't mind losing health as the next healing point isn't too far and Totodile, soon Croconaw is easily going to sweep until Azalea Town and I tried to fight every trainer from Route 30.

Route 30 and 31 weren't interesting honestly and either Rage on level 2 Pokemon or Scratch for hgiher level Pokemon were more than enough to kill everything. I was unsure if Bellsprout's tower was worth trying so I saved before the gym to see how Totodile would fare. The Spearow is actually 2HKOed but doesn't do too much damages so I decided to see the second trainer where it was still a 2HKO. Hence, the Bellsprout's tower was the best choice as after the training, Totodile might be able to OHKO Pokemons from the gym. Bellsprout aren't OHKOed by Rage even at level 3 so Scratch was used on them. Level 7 Bellsprout are 2HKOed by Scratch but I got lucky and all of them used Growth while the latter got crited by Scratch. Only Hoothoot got to hit Totodile and it barely did damages. What was a great feeling is that Totodile evolved rightafter fighting the last sage, not only it is a great timing but it means the gym will be far easier. Indeed, the second trainer's Pidgey were OHKOed by Scratch. Falkner was easy as usual, Pidgey got OHKOed by Scratch and Water Gun+Rage was enough for Pidgeotto. Croconaw had 46 HP reminaing and while having only 4 Scratch's PP sucks, it won't be needed too much later on.

Road to Bugsy

Route 32 wasn't too much of an issue and I fought every trainer but the fishers. Water-types aren't OHKOed, require Scratch and the Magikarp one consumes too much PP and is bad experience wise. I used Rage to 2HKO everything (Wooper used Water Gun so that helped), except for Nidoran female where I used Water Gun and the move lost all its PPs as it was barely needed here anyway. From Bird Keeper Peter onward, Water Gun was used and it OHKOed everything except for Machop from Hiker Anthony. I picked the Swift TM which might be useful later on while avoiding Pokemaniac Harry until level 21 where I deleted Leer for Bite and could OHKO Slowpoke. Slowpoke Well was trivial, everything was OHKOed by Water Gun and the Scratch PPs I preserved. I left the location to grind in the Union Cave, only leaving 2 PPs for the Rocket Grunt. Croconaw got to level 23 and 2HKOed Koffing from the last Rocket Grunt with Water Gun.

Azalea gym is nothing complicated. Rage was enough to 2HKO Spinarak and Ledyba, while taking only 1 damage from Tackle from the latter and the former used String Shot. Then, I went to the right as Bug Catcher Al was better to fight because unlike Paras, Caterpie and Weedle are OHKOed by Scratch. Bug Catcher Benny means losing health with is Beedrill thus it was better to avoid it and to directly fight Bugsy. It wasn't a problem at all here as 4 Rage was enough for Metapod as it went for Harden and 2 Tackle, 1 hit was enough for Kakuna and Scyther was a speed tie. First turn, it missed Fury Cutter while taking half and Croconaw outsped and ko it with Rage second turn. This was quite an easy win and afterwards, Croconaw has 71/76 HP remaining and in spite of having a far next health point, things are looking great for now.

That's all for now ! Next time, we'll fight the rival and Whitney and get another Pokemon. It will spear the opponents and eventually be fearsome !

Catching Farfetch'd

Right after the Bugsy win, I tried to plan ahead because next important fights are going to be troublesome. Rival fight isn't easy because Bayleef is just too bulky and despite being overleveled, Croconaw lacks the special attack to severly dent it. Whitney is another hard fight and probably the hardest gym leader in the region and needs adequate strategy. Morty should be easier especially if I have a Ferraligatr by then and isn't too far of the forced heal anyway. With that in mind and having followed GSC speedrun, I decided to teach Fury Cutter to my Croconaw. Fury Cutter is probably more reliable for Whitney as it should require only 5 hits whereas Rage needs to get hit, which may prove to be difficult considering the challenge. Another additonnal perk of using Fury Cutter is that Croconaw can level up by using the remaining Rage PPs. Furtheremore, as I planned to use Cut over Scratch later on, I would use the 33 PPs remaining. Hence, I decided to train in the second floor of the Union Cave. Onix and Geodude take Rage too well thus I decided to use Rage only against Rattata and Zubat as if they are level 7 or 6, it's an OHKO. When Croconaw reached level 25, it could OHKO even level 8 Pokemon and Scratch could even OHKO Sandshrew ! Eventually, having used the 33 PPs from Scratch and 9 from Rage, Croconaw reached level 26 and I tried rival fight. I saved before facing it because it's safer and resetting wasn't too hard as Gastly is OHKOed by Water Gun. Anyway, as stated Gastly is OHKOed by Water Gun, Zubat is 2HKOed while Bayleef is only a 3HKO with Bite sadly. Luckily on the second try, I managed to crit and flinch Bayleef with Bite, securing a solid win without losing health as Zubat missed SuperSonic. Afterwards, I could go to the Ilex Forest and catch the Farfetch'd to get the HM Cut. I replaced Scratch with it and Rage by Fury Cutter. I picked up the Headbutt TM and chose not to face any trainer from then and got to Goldenrod City.

Defeating the cow

First thing I did when I got to Goldenrod City was getting the bike and Kenya. You juste need to look at the in game tier list and Spearow is a top 5 Pokemon right after Kadabra/Alakazam and is on par with Totodile and Magmar. Fearow is just overall extremly consistent to beat the game, it has many good matchup and can defeat most gym leaders and Elite 4 while being strong against Lance. Spearow was at the time planned to be the main Pokemon I'd use for this run. While Kenya is only level 10, it has traded experience which largely makes up for it and training it is an easy task as Fearow and even Spearow are really strong. Another perk is the amount of PPs it has as between Peck having 35 PP, Fury Attack 15 PPs, Swift having 20 PPs and later on Drill Peck and Return having 20 PP, it will eally help for this kind of challenge with restricted Power Point.

I had to think a lot in the begeging to train Kenya tho. First thing I did was facing Picknicker Gina on Route 34 as she has 3 grass-types. Hoppip are OHKOed by Peck and Bulbasaur gets 2HKOed in spite of its Growl. Next up was Bug Catcher Wayne in the Ilex Forest whose Ledyba and Paras were defeated by a single Peck. Afterwards, I faced Youngster Ian, where one Peck was enough for Mankey and 2 for Diglet that went for Scratch (Spearow lost 8 HP in the process) and then Growl. Camper Ivan got defeated by 2 Fury Attack (3 hits on Diglett and 4 on Zubat) and then I switched Kenya to Croconaw for the Diglett that went for Growl to beat it with Water Gun. I then saved before Juggler Irwin. Level 2 Voltorb was OHKOed by Peck, level 6 required 3 hits from Fury Attack, 4 hits were needed on the level 10 one. Last one couldn't take 3+2 hits from Fury Attack and went for Screech twice. Venonat from Bug Catcher Arnie couldn't take 2 Peck from Spearow and went for Foresight. Then, I taught Swift over Growl for Psychic Mark. Abra are outsped and OHKOed by Swift but Kadabra outspeeds and Confusion nearly OHKOes. Hence, I reset until Kadabra used Kinesis twice. This fight got Kenya to level 18. 3 Peck were enough for Schoolboy Alan and Constrict only did 6 damages with 2 hits. I went to the Natural Park after this fight and faced Schoolboy Jack. One Peck was enough for Oddish and Voltorb couldn't take 2 Swift while using Screech. Next up was Camper Todd where Peck + Swift was enough for Psyduck as it used Tail Whip. Eventually, after facing Bird Keeper Bryan with one Swift for Pidgey and Swift + Peck for Pidgeotto as it missed Tackle, Spearow evolved into Fearow. 3 hits from Fury Attack twice were enough for Firebreather Walt and his 2 Magmar. Likewise, 3 hits from Fury Attack were enough for Picknicker Brook. 4 Peck were enough for Camper Elliot as Sandshew went for Sand Attack and Marill Defense Curl. 2 Peck and Swift was enough for Beauty Victoria. I won't detail the rest as the paragraph is already really long as it is but before facing Whitney I had a level 25 Fearow, with reamining PPs being : 7 PP for Peck, 8 PPs for Swift and 5 PPs for Fury Attack.

Now onto the Whitney battle, Clefairy used Metronome selecting Safeguard then Doubleslap for 2 hits doing 4 damages before falling to the third Fury Cutter. Miltank was 2HKOed by Fury Cutter and did 15 damages with 2 Rollout. It's a great win considering Croconaw only lost 19 HP, the next gym isn't that hard and the forced heal not too far from here.

Morty gym

Twins Ann and Anne were defeated by Fury Attack (3 hits) and Peck and 3 hits was enough for Psychic Greg. I went up to the Kimono Dance Theater and took down Flareon, Espeon and Jolteon with Swift and then fought Rival. When Fearow got to level 26, I taught Pursuit over Leer for a better gym performance. Silver wasn't a problem as Peck and Curse is enough to kill Haunter, Magnemite fortunately missed Thunder Wave and got 2HKOed by Croconaw, Bayleef was 2HKOed by Peck in spite of Growl and then Zubat was OHKOed by Swift.

I trained in the gym and Pursuit was enough to OHKO every Gastly while Haunter that is 2HKOed mostly went for Mean Look and that got Kenya to level 30. Before facing Morty, I really wanted to have Ferraligatr because Gengar is going to take nothing from Pursuit, not to mention Kenya is going to disobey due to its level. I defeated Vaporeon using Swift, allowing Fearow to gain a level and 3 Fury Cutter were enough with Croconaw to defeat Umbreon. Route 38 was then the way to go to train. 4 Fury Cutter were enough for Beauty Valerie and 3 Cut were fine for Bird Keeper Toby. I used the remaining PPs on Schoolboy Chad and Beauty Olivia and replaced Fury Cutter with Headbutt. After clearing the Route 39, Croconaw eventually evolved.

Morty was extremly easy with a level 30 starter. Ferraligatr outspeeds everything and OHKOes Gastly and Haunter. Only Gengar was 2HKOed but somehow went for Mean Look, allowing a no damage sweep lol.

Next time, we will see the healing point and up to the Pryce battle !

The future of the run

From now on, I really want to use Fearow as my main Pokemon and there are several reasons for this. Boosted experience helps a lot in this kind of run because tou can't afford to do too many battles with limited PPs. More importantly, Fearow has much better matchup from now on, except for Jasmine and maybe Pryce. Clair is much better because Kenya should be able to OHKO Dragonair unlike Ferraligatr that could get paralysed, Will could be a no damage sweep, as well as Koga, Bruno (outside of Onix) and Karen (when only Umbreon is probably not going to get OHKOed). Even Lance, with the exception of Aerodactyl seems better for Kenya. Kanto is a walk in the park really outside of Blue and Red but even in the second region, Kenya seems to do better against Misty at the cost of a worse Brock. Blue looks better because outside of Rhydon and Arcanine, everything should get OHKOed by Kenya and it has the potential to 2HKO everythin against Red at a high level. I'm thinking of a level 72-75 by then, which is feasible with Fearow but not with Ferraligatr sadly. To ensure Kenya would be of a high level enough, I planned at this time to get the EXP Share as soon as possible, this way my Fearow could sweep when needed thanks to a high level.

Something else I considered at the time was getting Vaporeon. I actually forgot Ferraligatr couldn't learn Waterfall, which is going to make things way harder. Looking at the different options, only 2 Pokemon available can learn Waterfall : Vaporeon and Dratini. I could have used Dratini but because it's exclusive to Pokemon Crystal, I prefer avoiding getting it. Something important I also realized at the time is that Ferraligatr is the only Pokemon I can get with Cut, which will be needed to get to Erika and due to the rules I can't forget it so Vaporeon helps a lot in that regard. It's sad to rely on DST Trick because it can take forever and that I had to rely on something exclusive to Crystal as you can't get elementary stonesin Gold and Silver but I had no choice.

Thus, first thing I did was going to Pokemon Center to talk to Bill and then get the Evee. It's better to wait go get Fly for the DST Trick as it will only be needed toward the end of Johto anyway.

Lake of Rage

Kenya really struggled PP wise as it only has 2 Peck PPs, 4 Swift PPs and 4 for Fury Attack while Pursuit is too weak outsde of ghost gym to be noteworthy. Fortunately, I had the Return TM left to use and thus I replaced Pursuit with it.

First thing I did was defeating Pokémaniac Miller with 2 Swift. 4 hits from Fury Attack were enough for Fisher Tully (really important to fight to get the Water Stone). 2 Peck were enough for Pokemaniac Shane. I switched grind against Hiker Benjamin, that got easily defeated with 2 Headbutt and Water Gun. The 2 remaining Swift were used on Pokemaniac Ron and Brent. 5 hits from Fury Attack were enough for Pokemaniac Ben's Slowbro and the remaining PPs were used on Gyarados from Fisher Marvin. I could then quicksave in front of Red Gyarados because I really wanted to avoid getting hit by it. It wasn't even needed because luckily it went for Leer while getting 2HKOed by Return.

Immediatly after that, I got the Exp. Share which is going to help a lot from now on. It's actually not too long thanks to Cut and it took around 2 to 3 minutes. As I was close to Violet City, I got the Mystic Water and equipped Gatr with it. Now, I could go the Rocket Hideout. The reason I want to do it first is in case I forget a trainer while having no experience before getting the free heal. Anyway, the guards got defeated by Cut without any problem, except for Grimer that required Water Gun. 3 Water Gun were enough for Scientific Jed and I could now click on the keyboard to prevent guards from appearing at the statues. With that done, I could train on Route 40 and 41 and possibly fight a gym leader.

Next gym leader

Against Chuck, I really wanted to get a level 40 Fearow, this way it could have Drill Peck and easily OHKO Primeape and 2HKO Poliwrath. As such, I decided to defeat Swimmer Kara, Swimmer Kirk and Swimmer Charlie with Return. I then faced Eusine and 2 Return were enough for Drowzee and Bite for Haunter. I didn't want to teach Strength to Ferraligatr for now because I really wanted to use every PP for the grinding. As such, I picked the Shuckle and taught it Strength. Afterwards, I would use Return on everything on every trainer from the gym. This still wasn't enough and Kenya was only level 38 by then thus I had to grind with Ferraligatr as well. After using the 14 remaining PPs from Cut on Swimmer George, Swimmer Simon, Swimmer Susie and Swimmer Kaylee. 5 wild Tentacool, it was time to use the other moves. I used the remaining PPs from Water Gun on Route 39 and later replaced it with Surf. This move was enough to OHKO Krabby and Shellder from trainers. After defeating all the trainers, I fished Krabby in Olivine to train Ferraligatr as it would get koed by the remaining moves. I took the Exp Share from Kenya because I really wanted to get to level 38 after Jasmine and luckily by this time, Kenya was at level 40, nearing level 41.

I got the Secret Potion, gave it to Ampharos and faced Jasmine. This fight was extremly easy as Surf OHKOes everything, no troubles sweeping here. Afterwards, Ferraligatr got to level 38 and learnt Slash. I replaced Bite with it and started grinding, Bite is fairly weak and A is a physical attacker anyway. I really wanted to only face Tentacruel to gain as much experience as possible and after using the 20 PP, it got to level 39.

Then, I would face Chuck, which was just as easy as Jasmine. Drill Peck OHKOes both Primeape and Poliwrath and I could get the badge really easily. After doing so, I used the 18 remaining Drill Peck PPs on wild Tentacruel and Mantine to get to level 43. I was fairly hesitant to teach Fly over Peck to train but I felt keeping Peck for all the rocket grunt would be better. It's for the same reason I decided to teach Strength later on Ferraligatr

Ice gym

I got the much needed healing here and my team was ready once again. I'm not going to detail Rocket HQ because Kenya just used Peck on everything and it was fine, with only Koffing and the 3 Electrode requiring to use Swift. I then went to the gym and used Peck against Skier Roxanne and Boarder Brad. Against the other trainers, Swift was enough for Seel, Dewgong required 2 Strength from my starter and the Shellder family was dealt with Surf.

Pryce wasn't much problems at all, Swift was enough for Seel, Return OHKOed Dewgong and Surf was enough for Piloswine, leading to the fourth no damage sweep in a row.

Next time will be the end of the run, with the Clair battle, the Elite 4 and the very short Kanto !

Goldenrod Radio Tower

After defeating, Pryce I had to deal with the numerous Rocket Grunt, which are as usual pretty easy to deal with. I used 20 Peck PPs against them, only using Ferraligatr for Magneti, defeating them with Water Gun and 2 Swift against Muk and Weezing. Afterwards, I ran out of Peck PPs and replaced it with Thief. The reason for this is that I want to get as much experience as possible and I can't learn Fly now due to this.

Goldenrod Tunnel was fairly easy. I used Ferraligatr for rival as it was able to OHKO everything but Meganium with Surf. I used Fly with Kenya against it and it was fine. Then, I could use Thief against the various trainers, only using Ferraligatr and its Slash for the Rocket Grunt. I used Ferraligatr too with Slash (and Surf for the Weezing) for the Grunt in the Warehouse and used the remaining 2 PPs of Thief against last Rocket Grunt. Afterwards, I replaced Thief with Fly. I used Ferraligatr and Slash to eventually clear the Goldenrod Radio Tower, using Slash again. Kenya was used for the Rocket executive and 3 Swift were enough

Dragon Gym

I wanted to get as much experience as possible to be at a high enough level for the Elite 4 (I'm aiming at level 60) thus I faced the various trainers. Ferraligatr was used to clear Route 44, ran out of Slash PP and started using Strength. I used Kenya on Route 45, except against rock-type where I switch grinded to Ferraligatr. Once done, I went to the gym and faced all trainers. Swift from Kenya was enough to OHKO everything but Seadra and Dragonair which got OHKOed by Fly. Kenya eventually got to level 58 for Clair.

The Clair battle was actually incredibly easy. Dragonair were OHKOed by Fly, using the remaining 3 PP. Then, much to my surprise, Kingdra was actually OHKOed by Return, leading to a non damage sweep.

Road to the Elite 4

I tried to face as much trainers as possible on Route 27 and Route 26 and used the remaining Swift PP. Once out of PPs, Ferraligatr defeated opponents with Surf and Strength. Once done with all these opponents, I faced rivals, which wasn't a problem with a level 45 Ferraligatr. Beforeward, I taught it Iron Tail and Earthquake, which are always cool options. Sneasel was defeated by Iron Tail, Earthquake was enough for Magneton, Kadabra and Haunter. Surf was enough for Golbat. For Meganium, I used Kenya and a single Drill Peck was enough. With that done, I grinded a bit with Earthquake and Iron Tail against wild Rhydon to get much needed experience. Kenya got to level 61 an Ferraligatr to level 46 and I felt it was time for the Elite 4 ! I just kept 3 PPs of Surf in order to deal with Onix and Aerodactyl which are big threat to Kenya

The League

My party was at the time a level 61 Kenya with only 19 Return and 19 Drill Peck and nearly at full health (it lost 5 HP to Ratta's Quick Attack), a Ferraligatr with 76/163 HP remaining and 3 death fodders in a level 5 Togepi, a level 20 Vaporeon and a level 15 Shuckle. While it may look impossible, Kenya is really strong and I felt confident. I just gave it Pink Bow. Let's see how it fares :

Will wasn't an issue. I used Return, OHKOing both Xatu with Return, Exeggutor and Jynx with Drill Peck and 2HKOing Slowbro with Return + Drill Peck as it went for Amnesia. This was a totally perfect battle and not even RNG reliant as Slowbro always uses Amnesia. This fight got Kenya to level 62.

Koga was pretty easy like most of the time, my only fear was Foretress using Explosion as it's pretty bulky to live a Drill Peck. Ariados and Venomoth were OHKOed by Drill Peck. Crobat was outsped and OHKOed by Return and Muk too surprisingly (Fearow is really that strong). Foretress is fortunately 2HKOed by Drill Peck and luckily it didn't go for Protect which would have wasted PP. In the middle of the fight, after Muk, Kenya got to level 63.

Bruno is really easy as Drill Peck OHKOes all the fighters and one Surf from Ferraligatr is enough for Onix. Not much problems here. Kenya actually lost damages from Hitmontop Quick Attack but that hardly matters. Before the fight, I gave Kenya Exp. Share to get experience from the Onix without having to grind switching because I want Ferraligatr to be healthy for Aerodactyl and gave Pink Bow back after this fight.

Karen I was a bit worried about Umbreon so I quicksaved before. Return 2HKOes Umbreon as it goes for Faint Attack, doing few damages. Then, Gengar and Vileplume are defeated by Drill Peck and Murkrow and Houndoom by Return. At the end of the fight, Kenya was at level 64.

Lance was without a doubt the hardest fight of the league. Gyarados was surprisingly OHKOed by Pink Bow Return and as were both lvl 47 Dragonite (I actually didn't expect that). I used Ferraligatr to OHKO Aerodactyl and I also expected a 2HKO. Ferraligatr had 20 HP remaining and defeated the fossil. Charizard was an easy OHKO with Return. Lastly, the level 50 Dragonite actually lives a Return but went for Outrage which fortunately doesn't OHKO and does like 60% (which feels enormous considering the level disparity). Afterwards, I had a level 65 Kenya.

Overall, the league was fairly easy but that's a bit obvious considering the level advantage. Anyway, I got the much needed heal and could start Kanto

Kanto

As always, Kanto gym leaders, outside of Blue are really easy and this time was no different really. I started by giving exp. share to Kenya. I used Surf twice and one Cut with A to defeat Sailor Stanly.

Then, because it's the closest gym leader, I faced Lt. Surge. I faced the trainer on the right (Gentleman Gregory) and 1 Cut and 1 Surf from my starter were enough. Lt.Surge was as easy as an Elite 4 member really. Kenya just used Swift on everything with only Magneton requiring Return.

Afterwards, I avoided trainers to go to Saffron Gym. I didn't face trainers and 3 Swift were enough for Sabrina.

With that done, I went to Cerulean City. I went to the Power Plant first, defeating Camper Dean with 2 Cut and a Surf and went back to Cerulean Gym to trigger the dialogue with the Rocket Grunt.

Route 25 was annoying but using Cut and Earthquake or Iron Tail was enough to get through it, even though it's a massive PP loss. This got Ferraligatr to level 47 at least.

Misty was then faced. Swift OHKOes Golduck and Starmie while Fly OHKOes Quagsire and Return is needed for Lapras. Then, I got the Machine part and could continue.

Erika is incredibly easy. First trainer is actually annoying but Earthquake OHKOes Victreebel and Earthquake + Cut is enough for Vileplume (luckily it missed Stun Spore). Erika herself is easy, Fly OHKOes Tangela and Bellossom and Swift kills Jumpluff and Victreebel.

I then was then unable to get to Brock because I actually forgot the EXPN card lol so I had to talk to Copycat, get her doll to have the Pass for the Magnet Train to get it. Luckily, this exists as otherwise it takes quite some time to get back to Johto.

Anyway, afterwards, I faced Brock with Ferraligatr and Surf OHKOes everything while it got to level 48. I talked to Blue but wanted to face it last because it's quite strong and has bulky Pokemon like Gyarados and Arcanine and I really wanted to make sure I could OHKO it. Fearow was at level 73 and I wanted to reach the level 75 benchmark. Blaine is easy, I switched from Kenya to Ferraligatr on Mascargo, OHKO it with Surf, then Kenya came back and OHKOes Magmar and Rapidash with Swift.

Janine was next and she's by far the easiest gym leader. Swift just OHKOed everything and had to PP left at the time. Kenya got to level 74 during this fight so I decided to use remaining Fly (12 PPs) and Swift (2 PPs) on the various trainers from Route 20 and Route 19. This got Kenya to level 75 and it was ready for Blue.

I gave Pink Bow for Blue because he is a strong opponent and I wasn't sure Return without Pink Bow would OHKO Arcanine and Gyarados. Anyway, onto the fight. Pidgeot get OHKOed by Return. I switched out for Rhydon, OHKOing it with Surf. The reason I didn't switch grind is that it's going to set up Sandstorm which is stronger in GSC and I wanted to be at full health for Red. Then, Exeggutor and Alakazam were OHKOed by Drill Peck. Return OHKOes both Arcanine and Gyarados which felt great. With a no damage sweep, I was ready for Red, with a level 76 Fearow.

Checking at PPs, I have 15 PPs for Return and 18 for Drill Peck. I don't think Drill Peck is really needed outside of Venusaur so I just kept 2 PPs from it and defeated 16 level 49 Golbat on Red with it. Return PPs feel right as I want 1 PP for Pikachu, 2 for Charizard, 2 for Espeon, 3 for Blastoise and 3 for Snorlax. I didn't bother trying to grind as my level 77 Fearow wouldn't have earn a level.

Before talking about the fight, I want to say that planning ahead, I tried to abuse the AI. In GSC, opponents try to use status move and in major battles, you'll always see for instance Lance Dragonite using Thunder Wave etc.. Here, 2 mons are concerned, Blastoise and Snorlax. Much like Lance's Gyarados, Blastoise is nearly guaranteed to use Rain Dance, which leaves a free turn. Snorlax is also nearly guranteed to use Amnesia, which is a free turn and unlike rain boosted Surf is no problem whatsoever.

The fight went this way. Pikachu is outsped and OHKOed by Return, no problem at all. Then, Blastoise comes. My fear is that it gets 3HKOed and goes for a very strong Blizzard. But, it actually takes Return for just half and as predicted, it went for Rain Dance, allowing to 2HKO it without taking damages. This makes me quite doubtful for Snorlax as it's the bulkiest mon, hits hard with Body Slam and can possibly paralyse. Espeon was the third Pokemon sent and it went down in a single Return. This is awesome as otherwise, it could use Reflect. Now, the biggest threat Snorlax came and this Pokemon decides the whole fight. I used Return on it, waited to see (its bar takes forever to drop due to ts enormous HP stats) and it got in yellow while using Amnesia. At this point, I was feeling really confident and the second Return was enough to take down Snorlax. Next was Charizard which took 2 Return and was the only Pokemon that could attack. Flamethrower for 70% much like Lance's Dragonite. Fortunately, as Fearow outspeeds and 2HKOes and didn't get burn, it was enough to defeat it. Lastly, Venusaur was defeated by a single Drill Peck and Red was defeated !!!

Conclusion

This run was a lot of fun. Unfortunately, these games are easier for this kind of challenge because they are many forced heal (honestly, just one after the league would have been perfect). Still, it felt great to defy the game, using mostly 2 Pokemon. The Johto part was pretty fun even though grinding before forced heals wasn't the best thing. Kanto, while shorter was pretty fun and it was cool to defeat quickly (like in a speedrun really) all the gym leaders, while training to plan ahead for Red and Blue. Sweeping Blue, while taking no damages felt awesome really and it was one my favourite moment. The best one tho was the Red fight. Defeating the hardest trainer, using only a single Pokemon at the same level as the Kanto starter is great and I was happy when I saw that Snorlax would get 2HKOed by Return.

With that said, I hope you enjoyed the challenge and that it encouraged trying something new because playing Pokemon with restricted options makes the game more challenging and fun !
