Onix is a great Stealth Rock user, has decent Speed, and Attack and along with Groundium Z, it has found a way to be more offensive as well as take care of its common checks in the metagame. With Groundium Z, Weak Armor, and a Jolly nature, Onix is able to outpace Pawniard as well as surprise switch-ins like Diglett and Life Orb Staryu with its Z-Move. An Adamant nature can be used over Jolly to give Onix extra power to be able to OHKO Foongus and slow Mienfoo with their Eviolite Knocked Off. It is also a good Flying-type check that can take care of Vullaby with Rock Blast. However, Onix struggles with Fighting-types like Timburr and Water-types like Corphish, so Pokemon like Spritzee and Snivy make good partners to take care of these. Onix also benefits from Knock Off support to help get KOs on bulky Pokemon like Foongus and Mienfoo, so Pokemon like Vullaby and Timburr are good to pair with it.

Onix doesn't really need the support, he just kinda likes it. It might be needed to score kills, you can either specify that or that it benefits from Knock Off support.
