Graffiti

Basics

Does anyone here do/has anyone here ever done graffiti? I don't know what it is that originally pulled me into it; I mean, it was something that was always around me, and most of my close friends do it, but it was more than that. I tried it once or twice, and... I dunno. Of all the things I do in my life which could be qualified as addictive, graffiti is the one to which I feel most addicted. And this is coming from a smoker/gamer/pot-head.

I don't know what it is, I mean in principle I'm very much opposed to graffiti. I don't believe it's justifiable in any way, but at the same time, I can't stop doing it. Part of it is just the rush, which sort of comes with doing anything illegal, but there's also some kind of satisfaction in thinking that you "own" a particular area or something. Like, when I'm on the bus to school, and I see a truck with my burner on it, or even the mailboxes I tag.

It's... I definitely think it's a bad thing, since like... well, it's a bit risky - not so much the actual graffiti part as much as just racking paint, which I've actually never heard of anyone being caught for, now that I think about it. I dunno... it's just one of the most fun things I've ever done.

Any thoughts?
 
I used to. i stopped doing it but its still a part of me life. when im bored i look at different pics. when i would do it i wasn't amazing at it but i could do decent tags. and it is risky but it has its uses. where i live(long island) some of the store owners would let us tag there outside walls since it was plain and they wanted to ''spruce it up'' so to speak. it kept us out of more dangerous stuff and it helped them out . im considering trying it out again but im 19 so i dont wanna risk anything with the law especially since i shaped up alot since then and currently in college. but im thinking of when i redo my room to get graffiti tag along the walls. i dont know how good that would look but ill try something out. im also considering getting decals of my name on my car in graffiti as my name looks good in it and i could get a good design of it.
 
Heh, I'd never, ever get a tag on my whip. I have to be careful, I can't even carry my black book around with me in the school, and I have to consciously avoid doodling graph on my assignments and shit. I had a friend who got kicked out like three years ago for graph, and I don't want to run that risk.

its not real graffiti perse. just normal decal shaped like how my name would look in graffiti. its either that or something like tribal decal. unless you knew what i mean then never mind to this >.>.
 
I dont have too much of a problem; however, I absolutely hate people who graffiti profanity over day-cares and pre-schools. To me that isn't expressing yourself, it is just being an asshole.

I agree. Infact, it is insulting to the public in general, as it's intention is to draw negativity, not positivity. Positive graffiti is good though in my book, (and yes my book is part of the Oprah Book Club)

There are some rules which most respectable graff-writers follow:
1) No tagging schools/churches
2) No tagging residential houses
3) No tagging community/rec centres (unless they allow it)
4) No tagging private vehicles

There are a couple exceptions, like if you go to a school you can tag it if you want, but I choose not to. At least not often, I have a few here and there.
 
Kinda funny how they follow their own made-up rules while some schools clearly state that writing/painting on the wall without permission is just not done, but whatever.

I like graffiti art when done well, and while I can sort of understand the whole fun in tagging (I did play GTA:SA for a while, after all), I think you should just keep your fucking hands off public/private property and go spray on paper or something and put that on a wall. At least they don't have trouble getting that off.

Just fyi, costs to repair damage done by graffiti are pretty fucking enormous in some countries. Don't have any numbers handy but I read a well-referenced text about it. Somewhere, at some point.
 
I have to hand it to graffiti artists, they are bold. Every time i drive on the freeway and see graffiti in the dead center of the bridge...I'm in awe.
 
i love graffiti art, but i like to just draw it rather than go out and fuck up some wall. i have a friend who is really into it and makes stencils for t-shirts and stuff, it's pretty fun.
 
It depends where the Graffiti has been placed. Obviously it has to look good, not these crappy "i r a br, woz ere at 2007" etc.
 
I've always found it odd that most graffiti is very well painted (or at least it's good where I live). I would think that most people who do it could make cash selling their art, but I guess people who do graffiti aren't in it for the money anyway. On the whole, I don't really mind graffiti at all, but I myself would never do it.
 
I'm all for any sort of public, noncommissioned artwork around town. I'm not sure what qualifies as "graffiti" though. I don't really enjoy 90% of the brightly colored, stylized words I see in every alley, but I think that stuff like wall paintings/murals/etc. can be some of the most profound and sincere art forms of all.

I remember one time when I was in Granada me and my friend were exploring the old Moorish quarter of the town, which is basically a maze of long alleyways and tightly packed houses. It was midday and the streets were completely empty, dead silence. We emerged from one alley, turned a corner and then found ourselves facing a tall, flat wall with an immense 15 foot tall "drawing" of a crying woman. The whole thing was composed of tiny, millimeter-thin strokes of black paint, which made it look like a giant pencil sketch, but what really made me stare was the expression of the woman. It was so raw and sorrowful I just felt chills along my spine. We must have stared at that thing for a good 10 minutes. Truly amazing.

Regular graffiti and other assorted wall doodles never have seemed too special after seeing that.

The only rules i know if toys cant cross out anything.all the no tagging rules are bullshit the only one that might be true is the church but thats it.where you live at basics ? it might be diffrent here.
what kind of shit do you bust out ? I dont really paint unlless i have to bust out a misson for the crew i mostly just hit up black books and bust out scribles on the street but rarely do bombs.Its cool that onther person is in to graff and pokemon sounds gay but i dont care send me a message later.

edit: oh shit you live in canada i bet your the only one hitting the streets there still hit me up on PM.
 
from what i know (my girlfriend goes on and off with her interest in graf, i dont care enough to follow but i am glad she is pursuing her amazing talent when it comes to drawing!!!), a bomb is one of those bubble-letter pieces!!!!!!!
 
around my area, my council looks down on graffiti however where my sister lives the council is muck more laid back and from what i can understand don't encourage it but won't get rid of it unless their is a request
 
I really dislike graffiti when it is something like "hey look i fucked this wall im that awesome ps hi joe" which is a big fat problem in my country. But I've seen amazing gems too, some of those people are really talented. Sometimes they are invited to paint a wall, usually as an ad to some social, cultural or philanthropic service. This is what I consider to be true graffiti and not random, criminal spraying.

For those whom have watched Berserk, that paintings on the streets(of Tokio?) are what I am talking about.
 
When it is vandalism, then it is pretty awful, and almost all graffiti is vandalism, so most of it I look down on! Graffiti style art can be absolutely beautiful, but only when whoever owns the property wants it to be there. Anyone who does it to a residential house that is not their own deserves to get shot (and here in Texas we can carry out such measures!)
 
Idiot graffiti like "I FUKED UR MUM" pisses me off no end but some of the more well-thought out and executed stuff is really quite beautiful.
 
One of the few college-age attractions still left in Pensacola is a railway bridge informally known as the "Graffiti Bridge". Every time you drive under it, you're bombarded with all sorts of colors and messages.

I've never actually done it myself, though I have to admit it seems like it would be fun as long as you're careful not to get caught.
 
when i used to skate some of the park officials would let us paint up the cement parts of the ramps. i really enjoyed it because we were able to express ourselves without breaking any laws or damaging any property. we mostly did impressionistic murals but sometimes we would do slogans at the bottom or top. i was never really interested in tagging freeways or walls because it just felt wrong to destroy something that someone else was going to have to pay to fix. i did do some pretty awesome bathroom stall murals in high school. i used water soluble ink pens though so the janitors could get it off easily.

illegal graffiti that can't be removed easily i find incredibly disgusting, especially gang related material. it is so fucking stupid that some people feel the urge to destroy something that innocent people are going to have to pay for. i also think gangs are one of the stupidest things invented my mankind so any material related to that gets two big thumbs down and a frown.
