Gothitelle [QC 2/3]

QC : Anty / Dundies / ?

[OVERVIEW]
Gothitelle is most of the time outclassed by better Psychic types : Grumpig and Hypno defensively and Kadabra and Mr. Mime offensively. That's because Grumpig has Thick Fat and a better offensive presence and Hypno has Wish and Seismic Toss ; meanwhile, Kadabra has Magic Guard, Encore and Thunder Wave and Mr. Mime has Fairy typing and Healing Wish. And the worst is that Shadow Tag, an awesome ability, is banned from PU.
Because of all this, the only effective thing it can do is to trap with Mean Look then to setup with Calm Mind.
However, all aren't bad new for the gothic, it has a nice 90 Physical Defense allowing it to tank a fair amount of hits, unlike Grumpig. Frisk can be useful to scout Choice items, and also, while it has only one viable set, this set is surprisingly effective to trap weak attackers and stall them out with the combination of a good physical Defense + Calm Mind. Finally, all these qualities make of Gothitelle an overall good stallbreaker.
Still, it has no recovery outside of Rest which is quite unreliable, and a bad 65 base stat in speed making it vulnerable to Taunt and revenge killers.

[SET]
name: Trapper
move 1: Mean Look
move 2: Psychic
move 3: Calm Mind
move 4: Rest
item: Leftovers
Ability: Frisk
Nature: Bold
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
=======
Mean Look traps weak attackers such as Stunfisk that can't do much to Gothitelle. Psychic is a nice STAB that hits Fighting and Poison types such as Machoke and Arbok for super effective damage. Calm Mind boosts Gothitelle's Special Attack and Special Defense so it can increase its bulk and offensive presence. After a few boosts, Gothitelle can easily take on specially attacking Pokemons such as Roselia and special Floatzel. Rest heals completely your Pokemon but makes it very passive during sleep turns.
Set Details
=======
Maximum EVs in HP and Defense and a Bold nature are here to increase Gothitelle's bulk because it will boost its Special Defense anyway. Also, with the Defense invested, Gothitelle can eventually survive hits such as a +2 Monferno Flare Blitz. Leftovers are used to give passive recovery so you aren't overreliant on Rest to heal damage taken. Frisk is the preferred ability as it allows to scout the opponent's item and eventually spot a Choice item.

Usage Tips
=======
It's better to send Gothitelle in the mid-game to beat troublesome Pokemon such as Monferno and Scarf Rotom-F after Dark types has fainted. Always be sure that your opponent doesn't have any Dark type that is still alive in his team so it can attempt to trap something. You can switch it into some physical hits such as Floatzel's Ice Punch or Scarf Simisage's Seed Bomb thank to its good natural Defense and setup with Calm Mind. He can also setup on passive Pokemon such as Audino and defensive Tangela. Remember that Rest can sometimes be shaky to use, because of how momentum killer it is and how it makes Gothitelle so vulnerable to setup sweepers, so be careful to not weaken Gothitelle too much.

Team Options
=======
Machoke is a awesome partner for Gothitelle because it hits on the physical side and can kill troublesome Pokemons such as Probopass and Dark-types with Close Combat or Dynamic Punch, and Metang and other Psychic types with Knock Off. Dusknoir can hit Psychic and Ghost types such as Duosion and Misdreavus, but be careful about Dark types. Other good partners include Monferno who can lure on Pokemon such as Stunfisk and Altaria that Gothitelle can effectively trap, U-Turn out to get Gothitelle in and check Dark-types ; and Stunfisk who can also check Dark-types such as Mightyena and Pawniard with physically defensive investissement thanks to Static. In more defensive teams, Audino is a great partner to take special hits such as Ninetales' boosted attacks (especially Dark Pulse) and Audino can also use Heal Bell to wake up Gothitelle.
[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other options
=======
A Choice Scarf + Trick + Frisk set could be used, however it's pretty hard to find time to use it and Gothitelle will lose on recovery and is outclasses by Mr. Mime anyway. Also, an offensive set with Competitive could work, if there weren't better offensive Psychics such as Mr. Mime. Pawniard is a much better Defog deterrer anyway. Still, a set of Taunt + 3 attacks (Thunderbolt, Psychic, filler) has the advantage of beating Vullaby one-on-one.
A RestTalk set with Calm Mind and Psyshock could be used, but that means that you lose on Gothitelle main niche : trapping with Mean Look. For the same reason, Hidden Power Fighting and Signal Beam are not recommanded because if it goes on Rest or Calm Mind, it leaves Gothitelle pretty passive, and if it goes on Mean Look, there's next to no reason to use it.

Checks and Counters
=======
**Dark types** : Dark types such as Mighthyna and Pawniard completely stop Gothitelle as they're immune to its STAB. Mighthyna can boost his attack if he KOes your Pokemon, however it dies to the rare Signal Beam and Hidden Power Fighting. Pawniard is more problematic because it can use Knock Off or setup with Swords Dance on the switch.
**Strong attackers** : Wallbreakers such as Dodrio, Ninjask, Stoutland and Simipour are serious problems for Gothitelle because they can severely dent it and revenge kill it before it can do anything. Even if Simipour is a special attacker, he deserves a mention usually carries Knock Off and can KO Gothitelle even atfer several Calm Mind's boosts.
**Taunt** : Taunt users such as Grumpig completely stops Gothitelle because it can't do anything anymore. Note that some Taunters can take a Psychic, too. Misdreavus deserves a special mention because Nasty Plot variants can setup fairly easily on it, especially when Gothitelle js asleep.
**Offensive Momentum** : Most of the time, the opponent won't stay on Gothitelle with a passive Pokemon and will switch in a strong wallbreaker, making it hard to trap and setup.

This needs to be in bullet point form until it gets 2 QC checks, check out other analyses in WIP or under 2 checks to see how it should be done. The set is also incorrect, QC decided on Mean Look / Psychic / Rest / Calm Mind, as all other sets are outclassed (for example, Grumpig does the specially defensive set better). Physically defensive EV spread as well

Sorry, I didn't know that it was its main set.
I'm going to test it then I'll put the set this night. (So I can have a general idea)
Thx a lot Zard tough :D

it still needs to be in bullet point form apart from c&c. This is a good example of how it should look before 2 checks.

What does this mean? (sry but English isn't my first language)
just check the example I linked in that last post, it needs to be in bullet points rather than written up in paragraphs. Like this

Overview
  • Horribly outclassed by better psychic types
  • only effective thing it can do is trap
  • good physical defense allows it to tank a fair amount of hits
  • frisk can sometimes be useful
rather than writing the paragraph, it's a bullet for each point you're going to make when you eventually do write it up.

Shouldn't competitive also get a slash. I know their aren't a lot of situations where it isn't useful but someone uses psychic they have the chance to get the drop (moonblast is a better example but only clefairy uses it so)

Thanks, I'll mention it (but it's an inferior choice because you need that your opponent uses Defog).

Overview:
'Frisk can sometimes be useful' - I dont think this is relevant in overview as ultimately frisk is situational and rarely useful
'Bad speed making it vulnerable to Taunt' - when talking about its low speed mentioning revenge killers like pawn and stout is more relevant than taunt

moves:
Something like Stunfisk would be a better example than monferno as iirc it 3hko's you even without SD
Mentioning the drop of SDEF of psychic is irrelevant

UT:
'Fits well on balanced teams that hate attackers such as Arbok and offensive Tangela.' - this should be moved to team options
'It can switch into some physical hits thank to its good natural Defense and setup with Calm Mind.' give examples of what - also give examples of passive mons it can mean look and set up on
'Don't switch Gothitelle too much into attacks because it doesn't have a reliable healing move.' - well it has more recovery than walls like grumpig and stunfisk so letting it take attacks is fine
Also in usage tips say what part of the game you would want to bring goth in, and talk about trying to hide mean look as if the op knows you have it they will always try to play around it

TO:
For TO, you can also mention pokemon which can help bait the things that it sets up on, eg uturn monferno to bait in Stunfisk

c&c:
instead of just Ninjask, call the section 'Strong Physical Attackers' and mention Pokemon like Stoutland and Dodrio which can easily RK it
I dont think steel types should be mentioned as Metang is actually set up fodder and goth wouldn't try set up on probopass. This is similar to taunt as it wont try to set up on grumpig. Psychic types too as mr mime actually loses one on one, and if goth reaches +6 they all lose

I think you should also mention a section of 'Offensive Momentum', basically talking about the opponent avoiding keeping passive pokemon in on Gothitelle meaning it cannot set up

[OVERVIEW]
  • Horribly outclassed by better psychic types : Grumpig and Hypno defensively and Kadabra and Mr. Mime offensively - go into detail of why they outclass (ie: grumpig has thick fat and hypno has wish, kadabra has magic guard along with stuff like encore and twave while mime has hwish)
  • Shadow Tag banned from PU
  • Only effective thing it can do is trap - make sure you specify mean look so people dont get confused and think shadow tag
  • Good physical defense allows it to tank a fair amount of hits, unlike Grumpig

  • Other options should always be considered first - you can remove this

changes in teal

do this and its QC 2/3 then you can write it up after you're done

Honestly, Taunt + 3 attacks (Taunt, Psychic, Thunderbolt, Shadow Ball/HP fighting) is so much better than this set. Especially with Prinplup dropping, now it can actually switch into and beat all three of the main Defoggers. Additionally due to its high overall bulk it is very hard to KO so it can usually force a sack after a boost. Now obviously this is outclassed by Grumpig, but it still has a niche in competitive and also beating Vullaby with Tbolt.

But this Mean Look set is just honestly trash. It's a total gimmick and never works. I know I won't be able to convince you to change the main set, but can you at least give a Taunt + Tbolt Competitive set a stronger mention in OO?

the mean look set is still hilariously effective on the ladder and it is probably gothitelle's best niche; however on one of my teams i used calm mind with max spe psychic / tbolt / hp fighting, which is awesome because not only does it lure pawniard (which never suckers cause the most common set is mean look) and vullaby which is ohkoed at +1 after rocks with modest, it makes an effective partner to normal types and works because it surprises those who expect the mean look set. honestly gothitelle isn't great but the combination of those two sets does cause some annoying guessing games so having both of those sets exist as main sets amplifies gothitelle's niche, in a way.

This write up is simply not acceptable for an analysis. You can try looking at other analyses or ones currently in GP to see how they should be written up, or just get somebody else to write up the skeleton. This is good factually, but the writing simply isn't up to scratch. Below is my check though, with the 3/3 pending on fixing the writeup

Be more specific about what gothitelle actually does in the overview. You spend too much time on other things that outclass it, which should only get brief mentions, and don't actually talk about the mon itself
I wouldnt mention simisear in special mons that don't do a lot to gothitelle because LO Knock Off is standard on it, pretty much anything else is good
Similarly I wouldnt mention avalugg as a mon you can switch into just bc roar is very common on it, pretty much any other weak attacker is fine there
I don't see the need to specifically mention choice band when talking about dusknoir in team options, any dusk set pairs well with this

Yeah, sorry but this just isn't up to snuff in terms of writing quality. The grammar is terrible and the overall phrasing isn't great either. The skeleton was good, so either write it up again from that (making sure to make it sound good) or we'll have someone else do it.
