Chesnaught is fucking glorious man, ingame he is actually more consistent than Greninja in my runs as ice beam is too fucking far and Greninja moves really lack BP for a relatively fast speedster when compared to psybeam for days and mystic fire delphox.

It gets Surf, which is stronger than both of those and is acquired after Korrina. Moves aren't a problem for it, Gym performance is.

Ok, with all the talk about Litten and Popplio, I want to go past the 2 cents I gave earlier and give my 2 dimes.

On Colors: I decided to put all the starters onto one page in order to analyze their looks in comparison to past generation games, and it's very interesting. These starters are a huge departures from all of the ones that came before it. Grass starters have primarily been pale greens and yellows, with the small deviation of brown and more energetic greens for Chespin. Of course, we have never had something that is primarily tan, like Rowlet.

Similarly, fire starters tend to use oranges, yellows and tans, while sometimes using a dark color for emphasis like navy or black. They have never used a dark red before, so that alone brings Litten in as a huge departure, and the black being his main color just brings that further.

Others have also mentioned Popplio's difference from the water starters of old, which have been light blue, aqua, and white with minimal use of dark blue. We had something a bit brighter with Froakie, but Popplio takes the cake being dominated by dark blue and having no yellow or orange on his model, which every single other water starter has.

Litten: I didn't think this Pokemon would be getting the hate it has gotten. Not that it's getting a ton of hate, but the reason people dislike it surprises me. It's simple, and that's the reason people don't like it?

When I first saw Litten, he rose to be one of my favorite starters, taking place right below Rowlet. I honestly love when starter designs are more simple. It leaves room for a lot of expansion in the future with it's evolution and makes it feel more natural as a pokemon. I don't get why people want him to be so much more complicated.

I also love the color choice. Having black as the primary color looks really good, especially with the dark reds to emphasize things. He looks different than all fire starters before him, but it really works and in my opinion looks very cool.

Popplio: Now after defending a somewhat disliked but mostly disliked pokemon, I am going to give the detailed reasons I personally dislike a mostly disliked pokemon to explain to others.

The primary color of dark blue is a huge offset that just makes him look strange from the beginning. The white part looks like an ice cream cone stuck to his face and doesn't seem like a natural part of him. All other water starters have had legs, where he really doesn't, having a flipper at the back which feels kind of strange. The ears on it's very round head also just look very strange, although it's hard to explain why. Lastly, I tend to prefer the simpler starters (like Litten) and being so defined as a "circus animal" with the neck frill and stuff doesn't appeal to me as much.

Overall, I like Popplio's attitude, artwork, and think he could be cool, but he doesn't have any initial pull to me.

And on other starter stuff: I will not be waiting to see what they end up as to decide, mainly because that's one of the surprises I like to keep for the game, finding out my what my starter will become. I'm surprised to see so many people decide based off the final evolution, as I view picking a starter as someone who I'll grow to like during the adventure no matter what they become. If I like them at the beginning, I'll like them at the end. When I played Red originally, I picked a starter who I liked not because they'd be Charizard or Blastoise, but because they spoke to me from the beginning. So, Rowlet will be coming with me the whole way through.

A lot of people were on the Fennekin hype train last gen because so many thought it was adorable. Then they fell more in love when Braixen was shown as the second form. Then.....Delphox happen and many supporters of team Fennekin dropped off fast and joined Froakie or Chespin when they saw their final evos. My question is do you guys think pattern will repeat with Rowlet who seems to be the most loved of the three? I admit I'm a bit spiteful and would love to see Rowlet's final evo be an atrocity just to see all my friends shut up about the thing like it's better than sliced bread and show how much of bandwagoners they are when they switch teams.

Rowlet is a good starter but for me torchic and piplup take the cake, with chespin a little behind

Funny you say that. I just made a list of my favorite starters, based only on first evolution, of all generations and came up with this list.

  1. Torchic
  2. Chespin
  3. Piplup
  4. Rowlet
  5. Litten
  6. Tepig
  7. Froakie
  8. Treecko
  9. Totodile
  10. Cyndaquil
  11. Mudkip
  12. Oshawott
  13. Squirtle
  14. Charmander
  15. Chickorita
  16. Popplio
  17. Snivy
  18. Bulbasaur
  19. Turtwig
  20. Fennekin
  21. Chimchar

...I really like the birds.

See, that's why I focus on the first evolution alone. I didn't like Chesnaught, but I still enjoyed Chespin and wouldn't change my choice for the world. That being said, I do hope all the starters have great final evolutions. Fingers crossed.

True, there is always the risk that the final product might not be as nice looking as the first stage. Emboar was what kept me from picking Tepig, who I thought looked the best overall of the trio. Snivy was a little too artsy fartsy for my tastes. I might not have liked Oshawott's ridiculous Piplup-like cuteness, but Samurott made up for that.

The problem I have with Popplio is that big, pink schnauze, and the cone-like snout. Popplio is supposed to be a sea lion, but lacks the sleek, muscular profile that makes them such amazing-looking creatures, and the eye placement isn't quite right, not being high enough above the snout. Sea lions also have a bigger pupil-to-eye-white ratio.

I really hope that Popplio's evolved forms address these design issues, or at least is UU material and above to make him worth using, otherwise, I don't it worth taking any priority whatsoever to raise one.

The deep blue and neck frill are passable, and I don't feel strongly about them either way.

To be fair, this would be similar to Volcarona, who isn't quite accurate to the amazing real life big moths that he is based off of. The wings never looked right IMO, looking like 6 leaves tacked on, as opposed the the beautiful, massive wings that these types of moths have, and what few legs he has don't look big or strong enough to support his weight when he lands. The Atlas and Cecropia moths on which he is based have these pretty big, strong legs, that are about the size of their equally massive antennae. But he is worth using in battle, being in OU during his heyday, with not even Stealth Rocks managing to peg him down into RU, so I'm always willing to overlook all of this, and Flame Body is useful for hatching eggs outside of battle. Volcarona, for all of his faults aesthetically, is worth keeping around, and is a fun challenge to raise.

Seriously am I the only one who likes the sintoist masked witch? I jumped on team Fennekin as soon as I saw that Witch/Priest, as someone who loved Mangas about barrier warriors and miracle workers this shit had the best design ever. Plus it's a fire starter without the fighting type!

Seriously...i feel I'm the only guy who likes Delphox and is happy it isn't on its four legs.

I know this is a discussion thread, but I threw these together and wanted to tack them onto one of my posts, so here's some pictures of all the starters hanging out:

I just dislike humanoid Pokemon in general, they feel completely weird to me. I've never liked Jynx or Mr. Mime, and Delphox I just felt didn't feel like a pokemon anymore but something too close to human.

I'm pretty sure the issue people have with Delphox is its fucking huge ear hair, not the fact that it's a biped. Nobody complained about Braixen walking on two legs.

That must make me one of the few who hasn't really given her massive ear hair a second thought.
It doesn't look bad in my opinion. Although I'm puzzled, where does the hair come from, I haven't seen a Inari themed ceremonial mask with huge fur protuberances, they are all barren and sealed into the standard priest robe.

Its probably about the friction or something to make it look more like a witch hat, regardless it looks fluffy as fuck and I love it.

I can vouch for the fact that the ear hair annoys people. That and the giant mustache that covers delphox's legs. Is it supposed to be a dress? Really hairy legs? I don't know, but it just bugs me. Braixen did it right with the design, delphox just added a plethora of fur that made it look like it might have a hard time with mobility.

Well in Delphox defense that attire is very similar to the sintoist robe, and Delphox actually looks great in movement, the idle animation does make him look like a duster though.

Seriously look for a sintoist priest, look for the traditional Inari attire, then make a witch hat out of the down hair and that's a white fur with black shades Delphox.

The ear hair is likely an over-exaggerated feature of the fennec fox, which Fennekin's line is likely heavily based off. Not nearly as much but the ears are very large and do have hair in them, so that's what I always thought the reasoning was.

I'm sure that is correct, however dosent change the fact for me that it just looks downright silly.

The word is "Shintoist" now, and the priest/priestess robes are less "swishy" than the actual maidens or for those of the Ainu culture, shamans.

As for the ear hair ('Inari' mask are no more inspiration than Kumadori would be in this case):

For all the justification it's given, it is executed poorly on Delphox's design and that is what seems to bug people, besides general nitpicking. It's over-sized, (in my opinion) it's like lugging around large towels on my arms and legs rather than being flowy and in Delphox's case - it's not particularly lengthy enough or "thin" enough to mimic being graceful.

I personally love Delphox and I have no regrets in choosing it in Generation VI.

Those are super cute.

Also what about humanoid Pokémon based on monkeys apes like Infernape?

There's a fine line some of them walk. Machoke I have some issues with, for instance, but not as much as Mr. Mime or Delphox. Infernape is still closer in design to the animal, so I don't have a problem with it. I don't have a problem with pokemon that are human shaped (some like, say, Scizor, are awesome), but moreso ones that are clearly based on humans, like Delphox, Mr. Mime, or Meloetta. They can just end up to close to where I feel that they're not pets anymore and there's something really weird going on there. Blaziken weirdly I don't have a problem with, but I feel that's because it feels to me much more like a pokemon and though it's much more humanoid than any of my other favorites, it doesn't overdo it as the others do.

First let me say that while I'm on team Rowlet, I do like Popplio and Litten and think they are both cute. Popplio has a non-ironic clown motif, which I like since when was the last time you saw a clown not designed to be scary these days? I like Litten's colors, the black and dark red contrasting the soft orange and yellows of all the other starters.

But let's ditch the sweet stuff get to my beef: popplio's nose looks like a rat snout

Hopefully it grows out of it. Otherwise the sea lion is okay with me. And heck, whose to say that the evolution lines won't end up something like this:

It's also half fighting, with the other half also being fighting.

Oh no, it's too handsome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe this belongs on the unpopular opinion thread, but am I the only one who not only dosent have a problem popplio's nose, but actually likes it. A lot. I think it fits in great as a circus ball with the whole zoo show sea lion theme. I kinda hope its evolution goes to more of a beach ball color scheme for the nose though.

If the nose gets like that, I would probably end up never choosing Popplio. I would prefer something though that still adds a circus ball. Maybe have it be like Spoink, or like the Pearlcatchers from Flight Rising. Make it a part of the biology but not in a way that gets really distracting.

I keep theorizing that Popplio nose is hinting towards an elephant seal or hooded seal, I honestly prefer the elephant one since that one is badass and can open the path towards sound attacks since elephant seals are prone to roar with their inflated nose sacks.
