Welcome to the Gen 9 Random Battles Swiss! This is the first tournament in inaugural the Random Battle Circuit I, with a new format to match; read on to learn more about how this tournament will run!

What is a Swiss?
A Swiss-System Tournament is a tournament style where if you lose, you keep playing! Swiss is commonly used in Chess, VGC, and various card games. Every round, players are paired against an opponent with a similar score to them in the tournament. For you as a player, that means that whether you win or lose, you still get a new opponent next week, and as the rounds go on, your opponents get closer and closer to being the same skill level as you.

How will this tournament be formatted?
The tournament will go for 9 rounds of Swiss if there are 512 players or less, and 10 if there are over 512.
Afterwards, we will move to a Top Cut. This will be a bracket of 32, where players with at most 1 loss will be given a bye.
All games in Swiss are Best-of-3. All games in Top Cut are Best-of-5.

Activity Requirements
Hosts anticipate that this will be a very large tournament, so we will be particularly stringent on activity. Hosts will be proactively checking whether players are still participating in the tournament, and will remove players who make no attempt to schedule their games. PLEASE FAMILIARISE YOURSELF WITH THE RULES BELOW, AS THEY ARE UNIQUE TO THIS TOURNAMENT.
-Dropping out of this tournament at any time is allowed; however, you must declare you wish to drop out by posting in the thread declaring as such before the next week goes live.
-Throwing/match-fixing because you wish to drop out will be seen as unsportsmanlike conduct, and may come with penalties such as a tournament infraction or denying you of all points from this tournament. Moderators and tournament hosts have full discretion for what counts as unsportsmanlike conduct.
-On Friday of each week (Thursday for week 1) tournament staff will perform an activity sweep looking for any inactive players who have made no visible scheduling attempt. Players who are determined to be inactive will be tagged in the thread, and if their game is not played, will be automatically dropped out.
-If a player has 2 successful activity losses in a row, they will also be automatically dropped out.
-If you are automatically dropped and wish to keep playing, you must post in the thread saying you wish to stay in the tournament before the next round is posted. There are no penalties for being automatically dropped per se, and no reason is required to be reinstated. However, abusing this rule may incur the same unsportsmanlike conduct penalties as throwing/matchfixing
-Games will not be coinflipped under any circumstances. If you fail to play during a given week and do not qualify for an activity win, the match will be declared as a double loss: nobody wins, nobody gets points.
-Extensions will only be granted under the most extreme circumstances. Even a single extension requires significant admin overhead, and the amount of extra work required to keep the tournament fair for all players is exponential with each new extension added. As a result, unless your appeal for an extension is particularly strong, your game will be declared a double loss. Due to this risk, we highly recommend you schedule early, and make every effort to play, even if it isn't at an ideal time.

How will this tournament grant points for the overall Circuit?
Whenever you win a game in this tournament, you will earn 1 RBC point. After every 3 wins, the points you earn will increase by 1. This means your first three wins are worth 1 point, wins 4-6 are worth 2, and so on.

Note: Scores in gray are players who qualified for Top 16 without winning a game in Top Cut; their score is therefore their base Swiss score.

It’s simple:
1. Contact your opponent on their Smogon wall and decide on a time to battle.
2. Battle each other in the format “[Gen 9] Random Battle”.
3. The first player to 2 wins (3 wins for top cut) wins! If that’s you, post your replays in the week’s thread declaring your victory.

Please note:
1. All scheduling attempts MUST be done publicly on Smogon Walls. No other proof of communication will count for act calls regarding scheduling attempts.
2. You MUST post replays of your wins.

We strongly recommend familiarizing yourself with the Smogon Tournament Rules and General Guidelines, if you haven’t already.

If you have further questions about this tournament or the Random Battle Circuit overall, please don’t hesitate to contact the hosts (Betathunder, Dark Pulse, Mathy, and paysa) on Smogon. No question is a dumb question! We’re here to help.

Signups will be open until Sunday 9th at 23:59 GMT-5. Good luck and have fun!
