[overview]
**Draft Order**: Late round Round 1
**Price Range**: 17-18 points
**Overview**: Garchomp is one of the apex predators of USUM, offering a variety of options to be used. It has solid bulk, a great offensive typing, and a wide movepool that means that it can always be an offensive threat. It can act as a sweeper, wallbreaker, lead, and revenge killer all-in-one. Garchomp is also a great user of Z-moves with the wide array of coverage options it has. However, without a way to reliably boost its Speed , Garchomp's base Speed might let it down a bit.
[strategy comments]
Common Roles
========
**Wallbreaker**: Garchomp's great Attack stat coupled with high-powered STAB moves means that it functions greatly as a wallbreaker that can punch holes in common walls while also being capable of taking a few hits in return. Furthermore, Garchomp has the option to run a special set or a mixed set to complicate dealing with it.
**Setup Sweeper**: Swords Dance boosts Garchomp's Attack to even greater heights, allowing it to easily cleave through weakened teams. This role also utilizes Z-moves very well, as Garchomp has a wide array of coverage moves to choose from to blast through a check.
**Revenge Killer**: Garchomp's excellent Speed stat coupled with high-powered moves means that it can don a Choice Scarf to become a strong revenge killer.
**Tank**: Tank Garchomp is commonly used as a lead, making good use of its bulk to set up Stealth Rock. Furthermore, Rocky Helmet combined with Rough Skin can be used to chip away at physical attackers without sacrificing too much offensive potential.
Common Moves
========
**Primary STAB Moves**: Earthquake, Outrage, Draco Meteor, Dragon Tail, Earth Power, Dragon Claw, Dragon Pulse
**Setup Moves**: Swords Dance
**Utility Moves**: Stealth Rock, Substitute, Toxic, Roar
**Coverage**: Iron Head, Stone Edge, Crunch, Poison Jab, Aqua Tail, Brick Break, Flamethrower, Fire Blast, Fire Fang, Surf, Shadow Claw
Niche Moves
========
**Endure**: Endure can be used in combination with Rocky Helmet and Rough skin to get even more chip damage against a physical attacker. Furthermore, you can combine it with Salac Berry to turn Garchomp into a sweeper.
**Hidden Power Ice**: Hidden Power Ice is a solid option for the more defensive Garchomp sets, and it is mostly used to be able to check Landorus-T and chunk it hard.
Common Items
========
**Z-Crystals**: Garchomp's wide movepool allows it to be a solid user of Z-moves as a way to bypass certain checks by breaking through them with sheer power.
**Choice Scarf**: Donning a Choice Scarf turns Garchomp into a threatening revenge killer and late-game cleaner by boosting its already good base Speed stat.
**Rocky Helmet**: Rocky Helmet combined with Rough Skin can cause a lot of chip damage on physical attackers. This can be used to dissuade pivoting in fear of taking a big amount of chip damage.
**Resistance Berries**: Resistance Berries, most commonly Yache Berry, can allow Garchomp to take a super effective hit and strike back or set up a Swords Dance.
Niche Items
========
**Damage-boosting Items**: Damage-boosting items, mostly Life Orb, can be run for a mixed Garchomp set. This allows it to make use of its solid special movepool to lure in physical checks and remove them. Soft Sand can be used here as well to bluff a Choice Band while boosting Garchomp's most common attack. Furthermore, Choice Band can be used to boost Garchomp's wallbreaking to an even greater degree.
**Pinch Berries**: Pinch Berries can be run as a one-time recovery option and work well with Garchomp's solid bulk.
**Lum Berry**: Lum Berry is most commonly seen on Swords Dance sets where Garchomp appreciates negating a debilitating status once.
**Leftovers**: Leftovers gives Garchomp additional longevity, allowing its bulk to shine through more without losing the offensive profile that makes Garchomp so dangerous. This is most commonly seen on Substitute sets.
**Assault Vest**: Assault Vest can be run when the opponent has a strong special presence without weakening Garchomp's offenses.
**Salac Berry**: Salac Berry is really only used in combination with Endure or Substitute to get a single massive sweep going, as it is one of the few ways to increase Garchomp's Speed
**Adrenaline Orb**: This can be run on Swords Dance sets to great use as Garchomp often attracts Intimidate users and is another way to increase Garchomp's Speed.
Draft Strategy
========
As Garchomp is one of the best options in the metagame, you should try your best to assist wherever you can. Since Garchomp can fill many roles, its teammates can be very flexible.
**Pivots*: Garchomp loves getting in for free with slow pivots. This allows it to freely fire away its strong attacks after setting up in the face of a non-threat. Rotom-W, Scizor and Tornadus-T are all great options for Garchomp to get in safely.
**Late-game Cleaners**: Garchomp's ability to dent opposing teams is amazing, so a teammate that can be used to clean up late-game is much appreciated. Zeraora, Mega Lopunny, and Greninja are all great fast attackers that can easily clean up a weakened team.
**Entry Hazard Support**: While Garchomp can set up Stealth Rock itself, having a teammate that can do that job opens up more options for Garchomp. Furthermore, entry hazard support helps Garchomp break down opposing teams even more. Skarmory, Ferrothorn, and Klefki are all great supportive options for it.
**Wallbreakers**: Garchomp's ability to clean up weakened teams means that it also appreciates teammates that can punch significant holes into the opposing team. Kartana, Mega Diancie, and Thundurus are all great options to help break down teams for Garchomp.
**Flying- and Fairy-type Checks**: Both of these types are immune to one of Garchomp's STAB attacks and are somewhat common switch-ins to Garchomp. As such, Garchomp appreciates teammates that can remove them. Rotom-W and Zapdos can be used to deal with Flying-types whereas Metagross and Roserade are viable Fairy-type checks.
Checks and Counters
========
**Faster Revenge Killers**: While Garchomp's bulk allows it to take a super effective hit with the right investment occasionally, it is usually prone to getting revenge killed by faster foes with super effective moves. Weavile, Greninja, and Tapu Koko all do massive damage to Garchomp while outspeeding it.
**Bulky Ground- and Dragon-resistant Pokemon**: While Garchomp has a solid movepool, it doesn't have enough options to run all the coverage it wants to hit an opposing defensive core without losing too much power. This means that bulky Ground- and Dragon-resistant Pokemon can usually stop Garchomp in its tracks and retaliate with status. Rotom-W, Togekiss, and Tapu Fini all do well against Garchomp with options to status it.
**Status**: While Garchomp's Ground typing might mean that it is hard to paralyze, both burning and poisoning Garchomp severely hamper what it wants to do, as its lack of recovery means that status easily wears it down and neuters its offensive output.
