im thinking of buying a PSP to play castlevania, GTA, megaman, and (il)legally downloaded ROMs on. what i need to know is, is there any recommended titles that i should purchase? and will i be okay with just the PSP and the memory card thingy?

titles i don't know
actually, finding some nice titles would be good for me too

and as far as I know
you shouldn't need anything other than the memory card and the psp
that's all I have

Metal Gear Portable Ops is excellent and is actually one of the few games I would even buy on the PSP.

If you want to play some games online SOCOM 2 is good (Metal Gear is online as well).

There not much else in terms of PSP games though God of War might be fantastic and change my mind on that. Just make sure you get the good emulators and even some decent homebrew apps.

A screen protector is good also, as the PSP screen likes to scratch easily.

Congrats on that Steelicks I'll be getting a psp soon as well. A couple of games I'm looking out for right now include God of War(Chains of Olympus) coming out over here at March 7. I'm also liking the looks of Crisis Core:FF7 which is set to make it's debut on May. NBA Live 2008 looks pretty good as well if you're into basketball. Warrior Orochi in my opinion is also something to look forward to(comes out this March).

Yes usually you only need the PSP itself and the memory card(pref. 4 gig or more). You could buy the game itself but it's really expensive lol.

I've had my PSP for a while now and I still don't that many good titles. If your into fighting games, Tekken Dark Resurrection or Darkstalkers: The Chaos Tower are two really good ones. Street Fighters Alpha Max is a classic, so I enjoyed that one too. I also played Metal Gear Acid, the card based Metal Gear, which btw is a extremely difficult game. As for the memory stick, you don't need to buy another one unless your going to be putting songs and movies onto it, the one you get should be big enough. And like Zerowing said, a screen protector is a must.

PATA PATA PATA PON PATA PATA PATA PON

PATA PATA PATA PON

(Buy Patapon, very fun rhythm-based game at a budget price... has RPG aspects as well)

steelicks if youre good at being a haxor and dont mind hurting sony's sales, just download psp games as well. since youre downloading roms you dont seem to be that against it!

Some games I have and recommend:

Tales of Eternia - Great game, great story, great battle system, great length, great fun. There is a reason this game didn't come out from my PSP for almost a year, until the following game came out...

Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions - I am a Final Fantasy Tactics fan, so I just had to buy this when it came out. The graphics and music are basically the same as the original, and battles are much slower. However, the new cut-scenes are wonderful to look at, the voice-overs are great, the dialogue is much better than the original, and two new classes make a this a nice improvement over the original.

Kingdom of Paradise - My first PSP game! This game is very underrated and more people need to play this! It is short, but very, very fun and addicting and it has good replay value to make up for it's length. I will probably start playing it again soon.

Luminies/Luminies II - Great puzzle games. Great music too!

I also recommend Exit, WTF: Work Time Fun and LocoRoco, which a friend of mine has and are extremely fun. I also played Mega Man X, and it was great too (haven't played Mega Man Powerd Up, except for a Demo, but I hear it is great too despite the weird graphics). Jeane D'Arc and Metal Gear Portable Ops are two games I am thinking on purchasing when I get some free time to play games. I'm also looking forward to Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core.

I have a PSP Slim with CFW installed and a 4GB stick, which is pretty much is enough for what I need. To be honest I mostly use the PSP for playing my old PS1 games and as a music player. I recommend purchasing the TV-Out cables if you are getting the PSP Slim and want to play your games in the TV.

do you need anything else except the memory card and the psp to actually be able to play illegal psp games? dont you need anything like swap magic or a modchip like for most consoles?

thats why i mentioned being a haxor, it doesnt require any other hardware barring a pandora's battery, which you can either make via a spare psp battery or you can buy a datel battery tool for like ten bucks that acts as a pandora's battery.

then it just takes some time to learn the processes, if youre not good at stuff like that it'll be way too complicated and frustrating for you. it might have gotten easier though, i havent really checked the psp scene out in about half a year.

whoa there, quick reply glen.
suddenly, a psp doesnt seem like a bad buy at all. i dont think it can be emulated for the pc like the NDS, can it? it is getting loads of rpg remakes apparently.

i dont know, in all honesty. i dont see why you wouldnt be able to though ?_?

well, i meant without using a powerful machine! i mean, my ds emulator slows down on games with lame 3d (like yugioh) so i cant imagine playing anything with psp graphics here.

Both the Star Ocean remakes look to be good, though neither of them have release dates announced out of Japan yet.

I don't think playing PSP games on the PC is possible yet (atleast I haven't heard about it), but you can play PSP games stored on your PC in the PSP via USB connection. Of course, that requires Custom Firmware and a program I don't remember right now.

All you need in order to play anything from the Memory Stick (PSP Games, PS1 Games, Emulators, Homebrew applications, etc...) is have a Custom Firmware installed on the PSP. A PSP-Phat with version 1.50 can do most of this, but CFW basically gives all the features of having version 1.50 and the features of the current Firmware (like Internet Radio or Skype in the latest ones). It's not very hard to install custom firmware, the most difficult part is probably making a Pandora's Battey (which basically resets the PSP-Phat to version 1.50, which you can then upgrade to whatever version you want, and is needed to install CFW on PSP-Slim) and with the right tutorial it's really easy. You don't really need a spare battery to make a Pandora's Battery, you can convert your battery to a Pandora and then revert it back to a normal battery (which I did).

I never had to do Pandora's Battery =/

Anyway Patapon sucks, its overrated and a piece of shit.

Well, if you have a PSP-Phat and had an older firmware (before 3.00 I think, not sure), you could install CFW without needing Pandora's Battery. But it's needed for the PSP Slim and newer official firmware versions afaik.

fuck it all, that pandoras battery shit sounds too complicated. i probably wont bother with a PSP

YES

the idea behind playing alla them fun games seems good, but then it goes all russian revolution on your ass and you end up with not much over a quater-speed crack of FFVII and pokemon silver that you never play.

not worth the effort, would not buy from again.

Making a Pandora's Battey is not complicated at all, just time consuming. You didn't expect Sony to just let you run Emulators and such in the PSP, did you? (yeah, Sony blew it there). It 's troublesome I admit, you NEED a PSP-Phat in order to make a Pandora Battery, so either you buy an old PSP or get a new PSP and buy a Pandora from the internet or have a friend who has an old PSP make one. However, you only need to go through this process just once (unless you brick your PSP...).

So yeah, if you are not willing to go through this process then I recommend not getting the PSP (unless what you really want is play PSP games or/and watch videos...). I mean, a computer/laptop can play emulators and such much better than the PSP.

Don't get me wrong, I love my PSP right now. PS1 games run great, I played Final Fantasy Tactics and Final Fantasy VII without any problems, and I am currently playing Brave Fencer Musashi. I have played Super Mario World, Super Mario RPG, Pokemon Crystal, The Legend of Zelda: Minish Cap, Sonic 3 and more without any problems. The hombrew scene is huge with many cool applications like PSP-PDA, PSP-Tube, PSP-IRC, PSP Spread Sheet, etc... and cool homebrew games like Hexaxis (my favorite). Having all of these on-the-go is extremely handy, but I travel a lot so that may have something to do with it!

Anyways, if you want to learn more about the PSP then look around the net. I mostly go to PSP-Hacks for my PSP needs, and their forums have all the tutorials you would probably need.

My dad gave me a PSP as a present once, the only thing I really use it for is on-the-go porn.

You will probably need a USB Cable, 2 Gigabyte Memory Stick, and God of War: Chains of Olympus!!!
By the way, you download stuff by connecting the USB Cable to the PSP and the Computer (together), and then you drag items to there appropriate folder!

Basically these (and MGS portable OPS) are the only games i enjoy on the PSP, i would also add Street Fighter Alpha 3 because is a fun fighter game, and PES 2008 if you like soccer (i don't know).

Look for some step-by-step tutorials to "flash" (hack or whatever you call it) the thing and it's on, i enjoy all the things it can emulate (old consoles, n64 but without sound and PSX).Is really not that hard once you do it the first time, but you can brick the thing if you screw :), finding someone to do it for you would be cool.
