Firestorm vs Jiggy37: Two Sides to Every Story

Firestorm

I did my best, I have no regrets!
is a Battle Simulator Moderator Alumnus
This is a fairly old battle. It happened on July 13th, 2007 and was the Loser's Bracket semi-finals match for the First Official NeoGAF Pokemon Tournament (spoilers on who won there!). As such, this warstory will be a little different from your standard one. I didn't keep the log, Jiggy did. He actually sent me a PM of it and his thoughts as the battle was going on are there. So we will be getting some of his thoughts, and my reflections.

There is not much in the way of damage indicators which hopefully doesn't make it too hard to read.

Firestorm sent out Butterfree!
Jiggy sent out Azelf!

Hi. This is my team you've seen in the archive if you like reading warstories. Sorry, it's all I got in-game so it's all you'll see! I lead with the same mindless move as always.

Jiggy withdrew Azelf.
Jiggy sent out Blissey!
Butterfree used Sleep Powder!
Blissey is fast asleep.

Hm. A switch. Blissey's asleep and I can't do much as a Butterfree to a sleeping Blissey. I decided to just U-Turn and switch according to his moves.

Butterfree uses U-Turn!
A critical hit!
(Blissey - 70%)
Butterfree returned to Firestorm.
Firestorm sent out Charizard!
Blissey is still fast asleep...
(Blissey - 76% after leftovers)

He decided to stay in. Something many people do considering it's a friggin Butterfree. Butterfree did decent damage with its critical hit. However, now it's time for my team's star to play.

Jiggy withdrew Blissey.
Jiggy sent out Gengar!
Charizard used Substitute!
(Charizard - 75%)

Jiggy: Assuming Belly Drum and Substitute, I withdraw to Gengar but I think he's already got this won.

Firestorm: Gengar is dead guaranteed unless it's holding Focus Sash. My setup is guaranteed.

Gengar used Shadow Ball!
Charizard's substitute broke!
Charizard used Belly Drum!
Charizard cuts its HP in half and maximized attack!
(Charizard - 25%)
Using the Salac Berry, Charizard's speed rose!

For those who don't know, Belly Drum cuts my HP in half and triples my physical damage. As an added benefit, Charizard's ability Blaze gives a 1.5x damage multiplier to all fire attacks when his HP is under 33%! I'm feeling really powerful right now ^_^

Charizard used Fire Punch!
Gengar fainted.
Jiggy sent out Azelf!

Score: 6 - 5 Firestorm

Charizard used Fire Punch!
Azelf held on with its Focus Sash!
(Azelf - 1%)
Azelf used Extrasensory!
Charizard fainted.
Firestorm sent out Butterfree!

Jiggy: I’m still heavily disadvantaged at this point, though, with a 1 HP Azelf and a weakened Blissey.

Firestorm: Ugh. This is bad. Since my team is so specialized, and Azelf hits so hard on everything (I don't think I realized Azelf doesn't learn ice beam for Dragonite), I decided to sacrifice Butterfree.

Azelf used Flamethrower!
Butterfree holds on with its Focus Sash!
(Butterfree - 1%)
Butterfree used U-Turn!
Azelf fainted.
Butterfree returned to Firestorm.
Firestorm sent out Umbreon!
Jiggy sent out Heracross!

Jiggy: Knowing Butterfree lacks Choice Scarf but might have Focus Sash, I use Flamethrower.

Firestorm: I didn't really know what to do. I sent out Umbreon as a general purpose guy. Looking back, that was a stupid thing to do in this scenario. However, it wasn't as stupid as staying in, which I also did. I guess I had just seen too many Scarfed Heracross lately... then again, it would still have been much better to just predict and switched to Dragonite. Ah I'm dumb.

Heracross used Megahorn!
Umbreon fainted.
Firestorm sent out Dragonite!

Jiggy: Umbreon staying in... Focus Sash?

Duh. What did I expect. Dammit.

Score: 4 - 4

Jiggy withdrew Heracross.
Jiggy sent out Gyarados.
Dragonite uses Dragon Dance!

I didn't expect Heracross to stay in and I don't really have a safe move to scout with. Dragon Dance seemed to be the best choice, especially if he had no real counter and was going to switch to get out of Megahorn. But no, it was Gyarados and I need to gtfo.

Firestorm withdrew Dragonite.
Firestorm sent out Butterfree.
Gyarados used Ice Fang!
Buterfree fainted.
Firestorm sent out Raichu!

Raichu couldn't come in safely on that and Dragonite didn't want to get hit by Ice Fang or Stone Edge (in this case Ice Fang), so I decided to sacrifice Butterfree.

Score: 4 - 3 Jiggy

Jiggy withdrew Gyarados.
Jiggy sent out Meganium.
Raichu used Nasty Plot!

Jiggy: I withdraw to Meganium, thinking it could be a Focus Punch Raichu if he expects I’ll bring in Blissey

Firestorm: I know he's going to switch. Not sure if he has Electivire. I went with Nasty Plot and hoped to god he didn't predict and try to EQ. Jiggy isn't suicidal and switched.

Raichu used Thunderbolt!
(Raichu - 90%)
Meganium used Light Screen!

Jiggy: He has life orb.

Firestorm: So honestly, I have no idea what Meganium's typical role is. I know I have a fairly unorthodox team, but I don't like playing UU Pokemon because I have no idea what they do. So since Smogon's Pokedex was down at the time, Serebii was being a bitch to load, and I didn't want to keep Jiggy waiting, I use Thunderbolt to see how it goes and hope he uses a support move I can Encore. Which he did!

Raichu uses Encore!
Meganium received an Encore.
Meganium used Light Screen!
It failed.

I decide to stay in and try to overpower whatever comes out next by Nasty Plotting or just Meganium even. The other choice is switch to Dragonite, but I figured that'd just be a repeat of the Gyarados situation.

Jiggy withdrew Meganium.
Jiggy sent out Blissey!
Raichu used Nasty Plot!

I need Light Screen to die before I can really pull this off so I'm not sure why I Thunderbolt next. Maybe I forgot.

Raichu used Thunderbolt!
(Raichu - 80%)
Blissey used Toxic!
Toxic missed...

Jiggy: I use Toxic for safety’s sake in case he switches to something I haven’t seen, as opposed to using Ice Beam in case he switches to Dragonite, but miss.

Raichu used Nasty Plot!
Blissey used Softboiled!
The Light Screen faded...

Jiggy: I use Softboiled, because even if he uses Encore it’s moot to me

Firestorm: With light screen down, I attempt to go in for the kill. At least that's what I think happened.

Raichu used Thunderbolt!
(Raichu - 70%)
Blissey became paralyzed!
Blissey used Softboiled!
(Blissey - 86%)

Jiggy: I try to weather the attacks with Softboiled, which seems a lot dumber than before now that I’m paralyzed. He’s got it won at this point, basically. I stay in since it won’t change things much either way

Raichu used Thunderbolt!
(Blissey - 16%)
Blissey used Ice Beam!
Raichu was frozen solid!
(Raichu - 32%)

Oh hell. I am a stubborn person (and I'm really screwed at this point in regards to Blissey with the rest of my team) soooo...

Raichu is frozen solid!
Blissey used Softboiled!
(Blissey - 79%)

Raichu is frozen solid!
Blissey used Ice Beam!
(Raichu - 4%)
(Blissey - 85%)

Jiggy: I use Ice Beam and he survives, but one more Life Orb hit will do the trick; and one more Thunderbolt will finish my Blissey as well

Firestorm: Oh my god come on thaw thaw thaw

Raichu thawed out!
Raichu used Thunderbolt!
(Blissey - 7%)
Raichu fainted!
Blissey used Ice Beam!
There was no target...
Firestorm sent out Dragonite!

Well, better late than never. This at least gets me past Blissey.

Score: 4 - 2 Jiggy

Dragonite used Outrage!
A critical hit!
Blissey fainted.
Jiggy sent out Meganium!

Jiggy: I pick Ice Beam since either he’ll Dragon Dance and get IBed (or I’ll get paralyzed) or use Outrage and Meganium can Counter.

Firestorm: I could have used a weak attack, but I think I was again afraid of Gyarados and wanted to hit hard in case it switched in.

Score: 3 - 2 Jiggy

Dragonite used Outrage!
Meganium used Counter!
Dragonite fainted.
Firestorm sent out Milotic!

Ouch.

Score: 3 - 1 Jiggy

Meganium used Light Screen!
Milotic used Ice Beam!
Meganium was frozen solid!

Hey cool. I caught a break.

Jiggy: I stay in trying to use Leech Seed.

Meganium is frozen solid.
Milotic used Ice Beam!
A critical hit!
Meganium fainted.
Jiggy sent out Gyarados!

Well, this wasn't exactly needed as he'd have died in two hits and was frozen, but ok.

Score: 2 - 1 Jiggy

Gyarados used Dragon Dance!
Milotic used Ice Beam!

Jiggy: No Hypnosis?

Firestorm: No Hypnosis.

Gyarados uses Dragon Dance!
Milotic used Haze!

Can't let you do that Star Fox.

Gyarados used Earthquake!
(Milotic - 72%)
Milotic used Ice Beam!
The Light Screen faded...

Jiggy: I use Earthquake to force a Recover eventually… it does more than I expect, about 28%.

Firestorm: I honestly can't do much except hope for a freeze and finish him off.

Gyarados used Waterfall!
Milotic used Ice Beam!
Gyarados was frozen solid!

Jiggy: I use Waterfall for flinching sake and it also does more than I expect [a non-Bold Milotic?].

Firestorm: As Jiggy has discovered, I'm a Calm Milotic. Something definitely not normal at the time we played. Nowadays I don't think a Milotic is common period. I got my freeze, let's hope it holds.

Gyarados is frozen solid.
Milotic uses Recover!
(Milotic - 100%)

Time to chip away.

Code:
while gyarados_hp > 0:
	print "Gyarados is frozen solid.";
	print "Milotic used Ice Beam!";
	gyarados_hp = gyarados_hp - 80;

Gyarados fainted.
Jiggy sent out Heracross!

So that took about 4 turns. Third freeze of the game.

Score: 1 - 1 Tie

Jiggy: Megahorn missing once out of two needed attacks gets me dead; Close Combat hitting just might get me dead no matter what unless he doesn’t survive, but it is a non-Bold Milotic…

Firestorm: I need him to use Close Combat and for me to get a critical to win this game. Or have him miss with Megahorn and hit with one critical surf + probably another.

Heracross used Megahorn!
Milotic used Surf!
It's a critical hit!
(Heracross - 53 HP)

Jiggy: So, really, I actually could have used Close Combat if it had been a non-critical Surf and survived.

Firestorm: Oh hell, my heard basically stopped when I saw the crit. Remember, this is WiFi. That bar slowly went down. Next move decides it. 20% chance I win, 80% chance Jiggy wins. CAN YOU FEEL THE TENSION?

Heracross used Megahorn!
Milotic fainted.

Ouch.

Score: 1 - 0 Jiggy
Jiggy wins

As this was the loser's bracket match, I was out after this. Jiggy went on to the losers bracket finals and lost for a 3rd place finish.

Props:
- Milotic for giving me a fighting chance at the end
- Butterfree + Charizard for killing everything that could take Raichu
- Raichu for basically getting set up to take on the entire team

Slops:
- Freezing
- Me for letting Umbreon die in a stupid fashion

If I'm not informed of the next NeoGAF tournament there will be trouble.
I like both of these teams, a lot of my favorite Pokemon. Meganium, Raichu, Dragonite. It's a shame Charizard didn't get to do more. Good story.

There won't be any more. Maybe when Competitor comes out I'll hold one. The second one failed in such a spectacular fashion it discouraged me from running any more WiFi ones. Everyone's lost interest.

Time to spend my 500th post commenting on this war story!

I think in all your warstories Umbreon has been quite useless!

Anyway, amusing as usual.

I'm still not entirely sure why I thought you had the match won simply because Charizard set up perfectly, unless I had forgotten that my Azelf had Focus Sash. Perhaps I'm just a negative person, since I also thought you had it won after Raichu got set up?

But I will say I'm really happy I stepped outside my usual rotation of walls (Blissey, Dusknoir, Ludicolo, Skarmory) and took Meganium into that battle. She worked out well, better than if I had taken any of the others.

Oh, and it was five turns of Ice Beam on Gyarados after that Recover. :P

I didn't either. IMO it was a good warstory, but the Zard set-up could have gone smoother. It is probably a better idea to use BellyZard AFTER a while, not right away. The exact scenerio would happen. Someone faster breaks your sub, then sash, or someone still faster KOs you. But you still did well anyway.

Good story, but Milotic didn't give you a chance at all. Your opponent gave you a chance at luck.

Maximizing your gain from luck and minimizing the damage by your opponent's luck is a big part of Pokemon I find. Everything is a statistic waiting to be exploited =) Like Jiggy said, I probably would have won if not for Blissey's freeze too. But he took advantage of that freeze and outplayed me.

I run this strategy as that's what works for this particular team (favourites). And there's no one faster than Charizard to break the sub except for a maxed out Aerodactyl, Jolteon, or Ninjask (lol). That and priority moves obviously. Focus Sash of course, but that's not that common either. It's a gamble I'm willing to take. Again, Pokemon is about maximizing luck.

I see what you are saying. My strategy requires Hypnosis to land. Without it I can't get my Sub passed. I was just saying from my experience with a BellyZard, there are certain OU Pokemon that are only OHKOed by Double-Edge and those are fairly common. But, you still make it work nonetheless. I even think it was your warstory that made me take 4 monthes to build my "perfect" BellyZard team. And boy has it worked a lot. But I'm not trying to brag, your strategy inspired me to begin with. And my team is in no way perfect. Hence the " ".
