Pros:
- Fairly good coverage, able to hit most of the relevant threats of the meta
- Multiscale allows Dragonite to set up a lot easier than most setup sweepers, halving damage from a move it takes if it is at full health.
- Incredibly good physical attack stat, with very good defensive stats to back up it's multiscale ability
- Provides a useful ground immunity, as well as naturally walling a few key threats thanks to it's defensive typing, namely non ice punch Palafin, Great Tusks, Slither Wing and Volcarona.
Cons:
- Does not have a viable physical flying stab
- Fairly one-dimensional (can no longer really play bulky support due to heal bell and defog cuts)
- Heavily crippled by all kinds of status
- Has to rely on Heavy-Duty-Boots as an item
Terastal Potential:
- Terastalyze gives Dragonite back the flying coverage it lost with Flying Tera Blast, the additional stab bonus if you choose to go with Flying Tera means you can lunch a 160 bp flying move factoring in stab.
- Due to it's great defensive profile, Dragonite can effectively use defensive terastalyze to change it's defensive typing if need be
- Additionally it can choose a tera type to fill another coverage option, water, ice, rock, ghost and fighting are all fantastic options to complement earthquake offensively
Potential Sets:
Dragon Dance w/ Roost Tera Sweeper

Dragonite @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Multiscale
Tera Type: Flying / Ghost / Water / Fighting / Rock / Ice
EVs: 48 HP / 252 Atk / 208 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Tera Blast / Ice Spinner (If Ice Tera) / Stone Edge (If Rock Tera) / Aqua Tail or Waterfall (If Water Tera)
- Earthquake
- Roost
Quite similar to the age-old Dragon Dance sweeper we all know and love (or hate), earthquake is fairly mandatory due to its incredible coverage and coherence with most offense types. Flying should usually be the tera type of choice, but Dragonite can easily customize it's Tera Type to fit it's teams offensive holes, it is worth noting that Tera Type can and should be replaced with a move of the corresponding tera type if Dragonite has it in it's movepool.
Dragonite is possibly one of the best current abusers of Shed Tail, due to the fact that multiscale plays a factor into the substitute's HP, making it incredibly difficult to break a substitute in one hit, making Cyclizar an incredible partner. Dragonite also greatly appreciates screens, giving it an easier time to sweep with Dragon Dance.
The speed benchmark allows it to outspeed a +1 Iron Bundle after 3 Dragon Dances
Dragon Dance Sweeper w/ Extreme Speed

Dragonite @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Multiscale
Tera Type: Normal / Flying
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Extreme Speed
- Earthquake
- Fire Punch / Thunder Punch / Tera Blast
An much more offensively inclined Dragonite, usually meant to sweep late game. Extreme Speed is quite possibly the best priority move in the game, with bolstered power with Extreme Speed if one chooses to use Tera Normal. Extreme Speed is quite useful especially against one of the main Dragonite checks: Chien Pao, since Extreme Speed has +2 priority. The final move is quite customizable, I personally opt for fire punch to hit steel types that are immune to earthquake (Corviknight, Air Balloon Gholdengo and Orthworm), it also hits Scizor.
Choice Band Dragonite

Dragonite @ Choice Band
Ability: Multiscale
Tera Type: Normal
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature / Jolly Nature
- Extreme Speed
- Earthquake
- Fire Punch / Thunder Punch
- Outrage
CB Dragonite has proven to be an extremely effective cleaner, trading away the ability to boost it's speed to attempt a sweep, to starting off with heavily bolstered moves due to Choice Band. Extreme Speed boosted by Choice Band is extremely powerful, as well as being faster than most priority in the game not called First Impression. Banded Outrage also hits any non fairy extremely hard, making it both an incredibly good breaker and a great revenge killer.
Overall, while Dragonite did lose a lot of useful tools with the transition from gen 8 to gen 9, it proves to be one of the main abusers of Terastallization, with multiple strong sets, capitalizing on it's incredible ability and bulk, taking advantage of Dragon Dance to bolster it's already great attack stat, as well as having one of the best priority attacks in the game in Extreme Speed, potentially even boosted with Terastallization.
Any other sets that you like to run on Dragonite? Feel free to provide commentary below!
