Please remember to follow the formatting in the Rules thread. Do not post any links to illegal downloading (Music, Movies, etc.)

uTorrent (Windows, Free)
My BitTorrent client of choice, it has generally robust features and doesn't use a lot of memory. The executable is very small and doesn't require installation so it's easy to start using. - SSBM roy

DownThemAll (Multiplatform, Free)
A Firefox extension that supports mass downloading groups of files on a page through customizable filters and splits files for faster downloads. I've seen notably increased speeds using this compared to an ordinary download. - SSBM roy

Free Download Manager (Windows, Free)
Easily the best download manager. Easy to use, fast and light on hard drive. Can be used to download from HTTP/S, FTP servers and also has BitTorrent support. The best thing about this is, there is an opinion section of files, opinions contributed by other users. So you can check before you download whether the software is safe or not. Get it! - CrabNebula

GetRight (Windows, Free/Pay)
Same as Free Download Manager. Also has BitTorrent support. But it is trialware. So if you dislike Free Download Manager for some reason, this is for you! - CrabNebula

FlashGet (Windows, Free)
A leading download manager which supports many protocols. It also includes ed2k (eMule) functions, so you can download torrents as well. You can customize it to your liking, and even use it for downloading from popular download sites such as RapidShare, MegaUpload and FlashGet. If you have any type of account with the download sites, you may also use the login feature provided by FlashGet to download with your account. Say goodbye to your browser's download, and welcome FlashGet downloads. You may also run this program in the background, and it'll still download files, like in Limewire. - Faltzer

Azureus (Cross-platform, Free/Open-source)
BitTorrent client with many, many features, highly customizable interface and useful plugins. However, because it's cross-platform, it can't be as light and fast as other clients. My second choice, after uTorrent. -Wizard

µTorrent (Windows, Free)
Small and efficient feature-filled client, currently the most popular Windows client. Work on a Web-based UI is currently in beta.

Azureus (Cross-platform, open source)
Currently the most popular cross-platform client and generally the recommended client for Mac users. Although rich in features, it is Java-based and thus uses more memory than most other clients. A web front-end is available.

KTorrent (Linux, open source)
Often considered the Linux counter-part of µTorrent, KTorrent contains all essential torrent features without being a memory hog, although it sometimes achieves its efficiency by sacrificing upload slots. Not recommended for private trackers. A Web GUI is available.

rTorrent (Linux/Mac, open source)
Feature-filled text-based client that uses a minimal amount of resources. Supports remote access via SSH. More popular among Linux users who are accustomed to operating from the command line.

GNU Wget (Windows/Linux, Free)
Command line download client. Small memory footprint, better performance (Firefox gives me an average download rate of 30-35 kbps whereas Wget delivers around 40 kbps).

Enhanced Ctorrent (Linux; Cygwin port possible, Free)
Command line torrent client. Fast, lightweight both in terms of hard disk space and memory footprint, has support for downloading individual files from torrents.

TorrentFlux (Linux/Windows, Free)
PHP-based torrent client. It has some annoying bugs, but they're avoidable. Very useful for coordinating downloads. I'm not sure how usable the Windows version is.

I really don't think I should be posting LimeWire or BitComet, but I will.

LimeWire (Multiplatform, Free/Paid)
The best P2P file sharing program on the GNUTella network. It supports torrent downloading, and has a built in search engine for which you can find almost any media type. It also has a file sharing utility in case you're willing to share files of your own. PRO version supports higher connection speeds, and the download speeds are slightly improved. In my opinion, worth the $20.00.

BitComet
Another P2P file sharing program, not as good as LimeWire, but gets the job done.

eMule (Windows, Free)
Fairly easy to use P2P sharing application, with a great amount of features such as the fast recovery of corrupted downloads and such.

I have no idea why this hasn't been posted before since it's used a lot.

Edit:

Ares Galaxy (Windows, Free)
Pretty neat P2P sharing program, it downloads very quickly, has great accessibility, has its own video player that supports many formats, chat rooms, and its own browser which isn't honestly very useful, but still saves some time. Ares is very underrated, if you feel like giving it a try, I'm sure you'll give it a thumbs up when you see how useful it can be.

Just to note that I wouldn't recommend downloading anything off the p2p programs like Ares, Limewire and eMule unless you are fully virus protected. Several years ago those programs rocked, now they just seem to be teeming with malicious files.

Frost in utorrent > all

I personally use utorrent for torrent downloads, but if ur not into torrents you should probably use frostwire. Much better than lime XD

Soulseek (Windows/Free)

It's a p2p program mostly used for music sharing, though it's possible to share other files. Unlike most p2p programs you can directly browse another person's folders, if they allow it. There is also a search option if you have no one to turn to. If someone has music of interest you can add their name to your user list for future use.

for me: 1. bittorrent private trackers 2. bittorrent public trackers 3. emule 4. soulseek I don't think I've ever not been able to find any music going in that order, so if you ever do have trouble try all of those... sure if you just want a few singles use limewire or whatever but that's the way that's easiest for those of us that actually like listeing to albums.

Another good one is:

iMesh (Windows, Free)
A P2P network that is, or claims to be, 100% legal. Can synchronize with iTunes if needed, and can perform very detailed searches. Fast Download Speeds (Between Limewire and Limewire Pro) and a collection of over 15,000,000 MP3's
