4th gen usable moves:
Seed bomb, Stealth rock, Superpower

Pros:
Excellent physical bulk, donphan can take most physical hits easily and ground is a decent defensive typing.

Sturdy, with the buff of sturdy in the 5th gen, donphan now have a free focus sash :D

Sand veil, donphan's dream world ability. The hax of sand veil is always welcome.

Good attack, 120 base attack is pretty respectable, and can put a dent on most non flyers/levitators with stab earthquake.

Stealth rock and rapid spin, donphan is one of the few reliable spinners and also can set up rocks, with the lack of SR tm in the 5th gen, donphan have an advantage over most of the new ground types.

Cons
Terrible special bulk, Donphan's base special defense is 60, and his hp (90) isn't great either, so he is easily KOd with special attacks. Even neutral hits can put a dent on him, at least he has sturdy now.

50 base speed, this guy isn't outspeeding much with that speed...

Ice, water and grass weaknesses, ice and water are always bad weaknesses and grass is much more common this gen with skymin, jaroda, nattorei, etc.

Movesets

Sturdy lead
Donphan@Custap berry
252hp/252atk/4speed
Ability sturdy, Adamant nature
-Stealth rock
-Rapid spin
-Eartquake
-Stone edge/Ice shard/Assurance

Thanks to sturdy donphan can survive almost (icicle spear) any attack and set up rocks. Once the rocks are up you can attack or spin the opponent's hazards. Thanks to custap berry, when donphan is at low health he will always move first, and thanks to sturdy donphan can almost 100% of the time spin before die. Donphan is also faster than others sturdy-custap users, like gigaisu and forretress. Mischievous heart leads are hard to deal, you can stone edge voltolos, but efuruun is a problem, even with ice shard, and you can't do anything to sableye and his will-o-whisp... A status absorber is recommended.

Sandstorm abuser
Donphan[LVL 1]@Shell bell
Evs: whatever...but 0 hp /Ivs: 0hp
Ability sturdy, ??? nature
-Endeavor
-Ice shard
-Protect
-Toxic/Filler

This set is pure gimmick but can wreak havoc if your opponent isn't prepared.
You need a streamer and something to kill ghosts, so tyranitar is a must.
The objective of this set is switch into an electric attack or when something dies. If the opponent pokemon isn't a ghost type, Donphan's endeavor will leave it at 1-12 hp and then it will be killed by the sandstorm. Also if the opponent is a rock/steel/ground/magic guard/etc pokemon and doesn't have leftovers, you can kill it with ice shard. Thanks to shell bell, Donphan will regain all his hp :D
Be aware of Toxic/WoW and the field clean of hazards.

Spinner
Donphan@Leftovers
252hp/188atk/68def (from old gen4 spinner set, might need more def this gen)
Ability sturdy/sand veil, Adamant nature
-Rapid spin
-Earthquake
-Assurance
-Ice shard/Stealth rock

Spin hazards, Assurance for ghosts switch ins (EQ for shanderaa) and ice shard for priority and revenge kill Weakened dragons. Earthquake for awesome stab.

He'll fit quite nicely into a sandstorm team. Also, if you're going to use a rock type attack, why not go with head smash?? The recoil can be troublesome, but it has the same accuracy as stone edge but more power.

LoL its kinda impossible to have a level one donphan >.>.. I think the lowest level you can get legit is 25, unless it can be caught at a slightly lower level in an earlier game.
I used a rock polish set back in gen 4 to some decent effect, with eq, stone edge and seed bomb to hit those damn bulky waters that ruin my fun. It worked to a certain degree, and will probably work better now with sturdy letting you get one in for sure. Give him a leichi berry for when sturdy activates and it could be a decent enough sweeper (though several other things do a very similar job)

lol, my bad. But lvl 1 phanpy does the same.
Edit: no sturdy for phanpy :(, I´m going to try with a min hp lvl 25 donphan :/

It could work, but it isn't something you could rely on because of priority.

Actually priority doesn't matter. They should always be faster then you anyway (after all you're a level 1 phanpy).

The fight basicly goes: They hit you (which drops you to 1 thanks to sturdy), you hit them (which fills your health to full thanks to being lvl 1 and Shell Bell), Repeat.

You just need to watch out for things that can ruin your sturdy (like entry hazards, multi-hit moves, toxic/burn, Hail, ect...).

What about a pure offense/tank set?
Donphan@Life Orb
Sand Veil/ Adamant Nature
252HP 252Attack 6 Speed
Head Smash/Stone Edge
Earthquake
Thunder Fang/Fire Fang/Ice Shard
Thunder Fang/Fire Fang/Ice Shard

seems quite clear

P.S Groshi, can you check the best combination(last 2 moveslots) for type coverage?

Im really bad at putting sets together/EV's, so corrections/improvements are welcome

Donphan @ Choice Band
Adamant
252 HP, 252 Atk, 6 Speed
~ Earthquake
~ Ice Shard
~ Stone Edge
~ Superpower/Gunk Shot

Seed Bomb isn't that useful as STAB EQ already does a good job of hitting water types. Gunk Shot has a good chance to OHKO Celebi if you predict correctly. Superpower at least does something to Bronzong who'd otherwise wall the whole set, and has good base power.

Nice set, but I'd replace stone edge with head smash (or at least mention it as an option). It has the same accuracy as stone edge but it does more damage. The recoil can be troublesome though.

Any good partners for this Donphan set?

Donphan-Leftovers (Sturdy)
Adamant (Atk+,SpAtk-)
252 HP/188 Atk/68 Def
Earthquake
Rapid Spin
Stone Edge/Stealth Rock
Ice Shard

With max Speed Donphan reaches 436 Speed at +2, enough to outspeed standard SubPetaya Empoleon as well as +1 neutral base 95s.

It seems to be outclassed by Things like Gigaisu(Sand Power and Sdef boost in sand) and Rhyperior though.

i love it when your opponent's weakened dragon uses outrage and just as he believes he has won you just ice shard him into oblivion...

It can also use Rock Polish to become faster, he can afford physical hits to setup it.
It looks good on paper, but Rock Polish Donphan is awful. It misses too many KOs, and if you decide to go with LO, you lose Sturdy after your first attack and priority easily takes you out (with no HP or Defensive EVs Donphan is actually pretty frail). This is from my personal experience though, so maybe I just didn't use it right.

RP Donphan would probably have the most similarities with RP Torterra. 252/252 Jolly Donphan has slightly less Attack and slightly more Speed than 252/252 Adamant RP Torterra. The main difference is Donphan's lack of a powerful Grass STAB, which seems like it would be more valuable to a RP sweeper than Ice Shard.

Level 1 Donphan is illegal I believe. But through the Pomeg Glitch it's possible to get a Level 5 Donphan. And since the Pomeg Glitch can also be done in the fourth generation Ice Shard is still available.

I'll make this a bigger font so everybody can see it.

Donphan cannot be level 1. It can only be at level 5, hatched by the EMERALD Pomeg Glitch. I.E., there is no DPP Pomeg Glitch. I.E. no DPP egg moves for Donphan. I.E. NO ICE SHARD FOR LEVEL 5 DONPHAN. Thus, the best set Donphan can run is either Endeavor/Sturdy at level 5 (outclassed by Aron) or Endeavor/Ice Shard/Sturdy at level... 20 (bred in DPP so no Pomeg Glitch so evolution at level 20). Please don't do that.

Donphan is outclassed by Aron whenever it is used in a Sturdy/Endeavor purpose (Aron is not T-Spikes weak).

I believe it works in 4th gen. Of coarse Bulbapedia could be wrong.

Wow, that SS gimmick donphan is frighteningly nice with the right support- but in standard tornaments are you allow to have pokemon that aren't all the same level?

Sandstorm abuser
Donphan[LVL 1]@Shell bell
Evs: whatever...but 0 hp /Ivs: 0hp

-Toxic/Filler

You can't have a level one Donphan. Also, Aron and Probopass do this set better, because Aron is immune to toxic and can actually be level one. And has metal burst to kill stuff immune to sandstorm.
