Cresselia

Type: Psychic
HP: 120
Attack: 70
Defense: 120
Special Attack: 75
Special Defense: 130
Speed: 85

Cresselia sports an impressive stat total of 600 and has the best all-around bulk in the game. So why is a monster that can make claims like that doing in RU? I mostly comes down to typing. Psychic just isn't as good as it was back in R/B/Y and has some very nasty weaknesses.

But that doesn't phaze Cresselia, as now it has a chance to shine in RU. Even with a weakness to the biggest bugs in town Cresselia can take the hits.

Sets:

Bulky Calm Mind
252 HP/252 Def/4 Spd Bold@Leftovers
- Calm Mind
- Rest/Substitute
- Ice Beam/HP fire/Moonlight
- Psychic

Cresselia's signature set. Very little can break through a full invested Cresselia's defense, and that list is even smaller down in RU. The basis behind this set is much like the old Curselax set, Calm Mind up till you need to heal then rest. Afterwards start beating on things with +? Psychic/Ice Beam. Substitute can be used to prevent status, but generally rest is considered superior unless running Moonlight.

Status Absorber
252 HP/4 Def/252 Sp.Def Calm/Bold@Flame Orb
-Psycho Shift
-Rest
-Sleep Talk
-Ice Beam/Psychic/Toxic/Trick

The point of this set is to pass around status. Psycho Shift is how you do that. Flame Orb will activate and then you can pass your burn (Weakening physical attacks) to the enemy. When you get low on health simply rest. Sleep Talk comes in handy here, as if it happens to choose Psycho Shift your will be cured of your sleep and your enemy will have gained it. The last slot is pretty much your choice. Ice Beam/Psychic allow you to attack and not be taunt bait. Toxic is if you really like status's As while you are sleeping you will have a 2/3 chances to status opponents. Trick allows Cresselia to get rid of the flame orb after her job is done and can severely limit bulky set up.

I find subCM to be a very good set, with sub / cm / psychic / hp fire. It lets you plow through most Bugs that would otherwise annoy you, and after 2 boosts nothing's going to like a STAB Psychic that isn't immune to it or has good SpDef. TBH the only real threats to Cresselia in this meta right now are Specs Yanmega (who are taken out by aforementioned HP Fire) and Krookodile who eats a Psycho Shift'd Will-O-Wisp exactly 0% of the time.

I prefer SubCM with Ice Beam and Moonlight, it allows Cress to recover, as sand and hail are basically non-existent in RU. THe only things that wall it are bulky water types such as alomoloma or however you spell that. Moonlight allows it to get to +6 pretty easily and can stall out a lot of things with Toxic Spikes support.

I also found SubCM Cresselia to be extremely good--to the verge of broken. Most pHazers can force you out while you don't have too much CMs- but so what? With levitate, it's not taking layer damage and will eventually sweep if the Cresselia user has a reliable switch-ins to Bug-types that will surely attempt to double switch or revenge if sub is down. (of course, I mean double switching to Yanmega when SR is not on) Oh, and Sharpedo also tends to be a big pain for CM Cressy- but it has no chance against defensive, statusing variants. Cressy lives Adamant Crunches any day...

I'm curious to see what people usually run on their 2 free moveslot on their Cresselia. I personally prefer Psyshock / Ice Beam for winning CM wars vs opposing Cress (+6 Psyshock does about 30% to max-max Cress).

Haven't faced one, but i have most certainly used one. The gen 4 reflect support set is still pretty nice. Gotta try Sub CM Sometime.

Putting up my freaking epic Cresselia build:

Cresselia
Chesto Berry
252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD Calm
-Rest
-Recycle
-Toxic
-Psychic/Ice Beam

I got walled by this in UU. Bringing it to RU caused insane destruction.

Basically, Cresselia can take 2 hits no problem. Rest away the damage, and then recycle the next turn. This will stall forever, and with her pretty decent 85 speed she can outspeed basically all stallers and Toxic stall to death. Psychic for STAB, Ice Beam for coverage. Can reroute EVs to defense if you want.

that set is just mean...lol

Yup Lunar Dance definitely needs to be mentioned too. Very good (essential you could say) on weather, Trick Room and dual screens support sets.

P.S. Weather, Trick Room and dual screens sets definitely need to be up there too!

What weather sets does Cress run? I will admit that I haven't been playing RU as much and haven't seen any weather sets.

More sets will go up as I have time to make them, in the meantime post your sets away.

I haven't seen a single Cresselia set up weather either but it does learn Rain Dance and Sunny Day (which I suspect will be very popular once Sawsbuck, Charizard and Tangrowth come down) so it is more than capable of doing weather support with the movepool and bulk it's got. Maybe it's because of all this talk about CM sets that it has been forgotten as one of the best supporters in the game!

Moveset Name: Offensive Calm Mind
Move 1: Calm Mind
Move 2: Psychic
Move 3: Rest \ Substitute
Move 4: Sleep Talk \ Moon Light \ Ice beam
Item: Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
Nature: Modest
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 Def

What's the difference between This set and the Bulky set? No idea but when I compared the Defensive bulk of Cresssilia to Duosion and Reuniclus, I noticed some interesting things.

Cressila Max HP 4 EVs in Def Modest = 444*277 = 122988

Duosion Max HP, Max Def with Evolite and Bold Nature = 334*(218*1.5) = 109218

Reuniclus Max HP, Max Def with Bold Nature = 424*273 = 115752

Obviously Cress is bulkier on the SpD side.

Cressilia with only a HP investment and 4 EV investment in Def is bulkier then Duosion (who is also viable in the tier), it's still bulkier then Reuniclus who's OU and there are much harder hitters in OU, In RU there aren't has many hard hitters compared to OU.

So it made me think why give Cressilia a maximum Defence investment when it's already bulkier then Reuniclus in OU and uses a similar set?

The Only thing Cress misses out on is Magic Guard so it's vulnerable to Status and the odd hail team but Status can be dealt with Rest or blocked with substitute as generally only walls carry Toxic who are generally slower. Why not just use those EVs and invest in SpA instead?

I'm no Pokemon expert but there's probably some reason for a maximum investment in bulk that helps Cressilia Wall certain pokemon in the tier but I'm not aware of it so I decide to run Cressilia as a tank with Max SpA instead

now let's compare SpA

uninvested SpA for Reuniclus and Duosion = 286

Max SPA Modest Cress = 273

wow notice how Cress suddenly become a lot like Reuniclus an Duosion without magic guard and it's faster which has it's pros and cons, now you outspeed slow pokemon allowing you to rest/recover first but now slow pokemon with payback deal base 100 damage.

My conclusion, this Cress is meant to hit harder sooner but still has enough bulk to wall certain threats.

I use Sub + CM with Psychic and Moonlight. It works both as a wall and as an amazing late-game sweeper. Recovery means it will often get to +6 (massive paralysis support helps) and after that poor coverage doesn't matter. Sure, Dark-types wall it but only Krook and Krow are common and Krook is easily walled.

It's a shame it's so good because I'm loving using it for the 1st time xD

Cresselia has hard counters based on whatever set it's running, however, Drapion generally beats it 100% of the time. Same with Skuntank. Any Dark-type beats the mono Attackers, and bulky Pokemon with Encore beat the SubCM variant.

bleh, Encore :P So far I"ve been beating the SubCM variants (only real threat to me) by attempting to outpredict it with Cryogonal until I can get it without a sub to Toxic it. Problem is when someone is capable of outpredicting that, at +4 Cress can 2HKO some of the time with Psychic.

Haze is an option but then I'm forced to drop Toxic which works very well on Cryo for crippling other walls. Admittedly I do have Toxic on Gastro so that's definately something I'll look into.

I don't know how she's in RU, I've had 4 6-0 sweeps with the Bulky CM set against OU teams (using RU Pokemon that weren't even required).
EVen against things that resist her, she just boosts and kills everything.
I run both attacks because for some idiotic reason nobody expects Ice Beam on Cress (when they should).
2HKOing Spiritomb is nothing to scoff at.
She's also great and turning a game around.
I had 4 enemies to defeat and just Cress left, on 27% health.
My Sub went before the enemy did.
Got to +6 after a few Leftovers-aided Subs.
Swept. JUST. But still.
I think she'll be banned in the suspect test for sure, but I'm enjoying Moonduck while I can!

Actually LevitatingLamprey, she won't need to be banned. She just went UU. Just thought I should put it out there for people that don't know yet.

EDIT: @NoLuck, actually, Antar's stats were made official, but I can't disagree with the time of updating the tiers.
