Conkeldurr (Analysis)

Full check! Changes in red.

[Overview]

Conkeldurr shows what it takes to be an offensive powerhouse when Speed isn't its strongest suit. Its 140 base Attack means that every hit from Conkeldurr is going to hurt. With Guts as an ability, burning Conkeldurr will only lead to more destruction. Those stone slabs Conkeldurr holds aren't for show either, as it is as durable as the slabs are. While 65 Special Defense may not seem like much, it's backed by 105 base HP and 95 Defense. Conkeldurr lacks Close Combat, but holds two attacks that many bulky Fighting-types would beg to have: Mach Punch and Drain Punch. Conkeldurr is just one of the main reasons you should have a Fighting-type resist on your team. The opponent that dares not to pack a Ghost, Flying, or Psychic-type should give up at the sight of Conkeldurr.

[SET COMMENTS]

624 Attack and 339 Defense after a Bulk Up is nothing to screw around with, and Conkeldurr shows the reasons why. Drain Punch allows Conkeldurr to tank through the opposition by hitting the opponent hard while recovering lost health. Mach Punch gives Conkeldurr utility for revenge killing threats such as Lucario and Doryuuzu while being able to bypass its Speed issue. The combination of these two attacks and Bulk Up makes Conkeldurr an annoying threat if the opposition doesn't hold a Fighting-type resist. Guts is icing on the cake since status effects such as burn and paralysis only make Conkeldurr stronger. Just to show how much of a monster Conkeldurr becomes with Guts activated, +1 Drain Punch OHKOes min HP / min Def Garchomp and is inches away from 2HKOing max HP / max Def Hippowdon. The final move is your choice: you can either shut down Ghost-types or prevent Flying-types from wrecking your sweep. Payback is the preferred move as Conkeldurr can set up on Ghost-types such as Dusknoir and receive a free Attack boost thanks to many Ghost-types carrying Will-O-Wisp.

There are a lot of ways to EV Conkeldurr. When using Payback, a Brave nature with 0 Speed IV is recommended. This allows Conkeldurr to use Payback at maximum power against most of its opposition. Adamant can be used with Stone Edge since the Speed drop is unnecessary. The current EV spread mimics Machamp's durability to an extent, trading slightly inferior Special Defense for superior Defense. If you want more specific EVs, 68 HP / 224 Atk / 216 SpD Adamant allows Conkeldurr to take a Timid Shandera Overheat. While slightly inefficient, 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 SpD Adamant can also work as it retains Conkeldurr's maximum power while buffing Conkeldurr's weaker defensive side. With this spread, Crocune will fail to 4HKO Conkeldurr without Drain Punch healing, so long as Sandstorm isn't in play. This allows Conkeldurr to comfortably obtain two Bulk Ups and follow up with Drain Punch to recover the health lost from Boiling Water. If Crocune decides to Calm Mind, it would need to Calm Mind 6 times to even KO Conkeldurr. Max HP is never a bad option as it keeps Conkeldurr sturdy on the special defensive end of the spectrum while improving its physical bulk further. After a Bulk Up, Skarmory's Brave Bird will fail to 2HKO Conkeldurr. This allows Conkeldurr to Bulk Up while Skarmory switches in, Bulk Up twice more, survive the second Brave Bird assault, and follow up with Drain Punch, which will 2HKO Skarmory. This means that, when facing Conkeldurr, Skarmory must either spam Brave Bird, Whirlwind it out (thus risking a chance of Conkeldurr recovering health after the first Bulk Up and following up with Drain Punch), or Roost, securing a OHKO from Drain Punch. One can choose to be more defensive, though keep in mind that Conkeldurr will not be an immediate threat until it uses Bulk Up a few times. 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD Careful allows Conkeldurr to set up on Pokemon such as Vaporeon easily. Boiling Water won't even 4HKO Conkeldurr while +1 Drain Punch can fully recover Conkeldurr's lost health.

[Additional Comments]

Conkeldurr's main issues are Pokemon that resist or are immune to Fighting-type attacks. While Payback or Stone Edge can alleviate some of the problem, neither is the end-all solution. If Conkeldurr is using Payback, make sure to pack Pokemon that can take down Flying-types. If Conkeldurr is running (previously awkward phrasing) Stone Edge, its teammates need to be able to handle Ghost-types. Stealth Rock is highly recommended to deter Flying-types such as Boroturosu and Zapdos from wrecking Conkeldurr. Spikes and / or Toxic Spikes are never a bad idea as both prevent Conkeldurr from being stalled out by Hippowdon. Scarf Tyranitar is a great Pokemon to pair alongside Conkeldurr. While the sandstorm nullifies Leftovers recovery, Tyranitar eliminates many of Conkeldurr’s threats thanks to Tyranitar’s powerful STABs. Conkeldurr can take some special attacks, but it doesn't like facing a special sweeper while trying to set up. Chansey or Blissey can help absorb powerful special attacks but must beware of Psycho Shock. Conkeldurr’s team should have some way of weakening the opponent’s physical walls. Infernape is never a bad Pokemon to use for this purpose. Gengar can help a lot since it hits many Psychic-types hard with STAB Shadow Ball; in return, Conkeldurr keeps Tyranitar away from Gengar.

name: Substitute + Focus Punch
move 1: Substitute
move 2: Focus Punch
move 3: Mach Punch
move 4: Payback / Stone Edge
item: Leftovers
ability: Guts
nature: Adamant
evs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Conkeldurr brags the most powerful Focus Punch in the game. Its good defenses and low Speed allow Conkeldurr to set up Substitute safely. After Substitute is set up, the opponent is not going to enjoy what could possibly come next. STAB Focus Punch has so much power it 2HKOes Skarmory after Stealth Rock, even with Leftovers taken into account. Mach Punch is a great move to complement Focus Punch as it can KO severely wounded Pokemon while ignoring Conkeldurr's poor Speed. Payback and Stone Edge finish the set off to compliment Conkeldurr’s Fighting-type STAB. Payback makes sure that no Ghost-types will be willing to switch into Conkeldurr; even +0 Payback can 2HKO Dusknoir while Dusknoir won’t even break Conkeldurr’s Substitute with Shadow Punch. Sadly, 0 SpA Burungeru does 26% minimum with Boil Over on max HP Conkeldurr. If you opt to use 120 HP / 252 Atk / 136 SpD with an Adamant Nature, Burungeru’s Boil Over won’t break Conkeldurr’s Substitute most of the time (22% - 26.2%). Stone Edge helps keep switch-ins such as Zapdos and Salamence out of the picture.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Offensively, Conkeldurr has many more options he can utilize. Drain Punch can be opted in the second slot so Conkeldurr can play more of a tanking role, as well as recover off any damage received from Substitute. However, Mach Punch is the better choice, as it can pick off pokemon that have been severely dented by Focus Punch, and STAB priority coming off a base 140 attack stat is too good to pass up. Conkeldurr has access to Earthquake, but in terms of coverage, it is rather redundant with Conkeldurr’s Fighting STAB. Force Palm may be used in hopes of paralyzing faster threats. However, since you should be carrying Mach Punch, speed isn’t a very big concern. If you really want to buff up your attacks, Life Orb is an option; however, it does not change any significant 2HKO’s into OHKO’s. If you feel Conkeldurr should start abusing its ability without relying on the opponent’s ability to status, a Flame Orb can be used to activate your Guts boost. However, the combined loss of HP from burn damage and Substitute damage means Conkeldurr needs to rely on Drain Punch to stay alive, which forces it to lose the utility of priority in Mach Punch. If you find Stone Edge's accuracy unappealing, Rock Slide + Sheer Force can be used, as Rock Slide receives a boost in power. However, if you opt to use Sheer Force, you lose your ability to abuse status afflictions, meaning Will-O-Wisp or Boiling Water can now ruin your chances of sweeping. It also does not help with your other moves, meaning Stone Edge is the better choice.

Since this Conkeldurr variant lacks any sufficient means of HP recovery, Wish support greatly aids it in recovering any health lost by status or Substitute. Since Conkeldurr lacks an immunity it can switch into, it is best to pair it up with Pokemon who can set up Wishes as well as lure in one of Conkeldurr’s resistances. Mamanbou and Vaporeon work well because of their reasonable bulk and enormous base HP stats, allowing Conkeldurr to take full benefit of the Wish. Chansey and Blissey also do a fantastic job at passing Wishes, and both can easily come in on any special attacks aimed at Conkeldurr. However, Conkeldurr is probably best paired with either Jirachi or Latias, as they both can lure in Dark attacks, such as Tyranitar’s STAB Crunch, enabling a safe switch to Conkeldurr to resist the attack and receive the Wish. However, Jirachi, unlike Latias, resists both Psychic and Flying attacks aimed at Conkeldurr, and its higher base HP makes it the superior candidate for passing Wishes.

Though unnecessary, a Dual Screener can provide Conkeldurr with increased bulk to allow longer lasting Substitutes. Cresselia does a fantastic job at this, as it offers almost unmatched bulk and can set up both screens with relative ease. It also resists any Psychic attacks aimed at Conkeldurr, easily shrugging them off and immediately setting up. Conkeldurr also resists any Bug or Dark attacks Cresselia may lure, giving you safe opportunities to switch in. Reuniclus also makes a great partner for setting up screens, as its nice bulk coupled with Magic Guard allows it to easily set up. Xatu also does a decent job at setting up screens, and needn’t fear getting Taunted due to Magic Mirror. Conkeldurr also absorbs any Rock attacks Xatu may attract, while Xatu absorbs any Psychic attacks aimed at Conkeldurr.

As far as counters go, there is no “solid” method to beat this Conkeldurr variant. The closest thing is anything that can take a few Focus Punches, break Conkeldurr’s sub, and continue to wear it down. Skarmory can slowly wear Conkeldurr down with STAB Brave Bird; however, it is still 2HKOed by Focus Punch, and if your opponent correctly predicts your Roost, it will almost always result in a OHKO. Poison Heal Gliscor is probably the best counter, and with physical investment can come in and survive most of Conkeldurr’s moves, Fling, and wear down Conkeldurr with STAB boosted Acrobat as well as prevent any Substitutes with Taunt. However, you probably should Fling your Toxic Orb prior to facing Conkeldurr, as you may risk activating its Guts ability. Another problem with Gliscor is that it must be careful when to Roost, as a predicted STAB, unresisted Focus Punch can seriously put a dent in your HP. Bulky Psychic types can come in and wall this Conkeldurr set if it opts for Stone Edge over Payback. Cresselia, Latias, and Reuniclus can all come in on any Fighting moves, break the sub with STAB Psychic attacks, and continue to whittle down Conkeldurr or set up on the switch. If carrying Stone Edge over Payback, Golurk completely walls Conkeldurr, and can set up on the switch or slowly wear it down with Earthquake.

[SET COMMENTS]

With Choice Band and the EVs listed, Conkeldurr reaches a ridiculous attack stat of 624, and a gargantuan stat of 936 after a Guts boost. To show just how terrifying of a threat this variant can be, Mach Punch deals 95.3% - 113% to a 0/0 Doryuuzu, meaning Stealth Rock plus one layer of Spikes or a Guts boost ensures a definite KO. After the Guts boost, Superpower KOs 252 / 252 Vaporeon, as well as the “standard” Skarmory with Stealth Rock in play. As for Hammer Arm, “standard” Skarmory takes 75.4% - 88.9%, meaning it will definitely be KOed after Brave Bird recoil. Superpower also inflicts 84.3% - 99.3% to the “standard” Hippowdon set, while Hammer Arm always 2HKO’s. However, if opting for Hammer Arm over Superpower, Speed EVs need to be invested if you want to outspeed Hippowdon after the speed drop and avoid giving the opponent any opportunities to Slack Off the damage (unless paralyzed, which means you're pretty much useless). In the case of 252 / 252 Hippowdon variants, Superpower will inflict 78.1% - 92.1%, meaning entry hazard support may be required to ensure a OHKO. The last two slots offer Conkeldurr coverage against various threats. A Max HP / Max Def Spiritomb with a positive nature takes 42.8% - 50.3% from an unboosted Stone Edge, while the Guts boost inflicts 63.8% - 75.3%. A 252 HP / 228 Def Dusknoir even takes a significant 76.9% - 90.5% from Payback if running a Defense boosting nature.

To show just how devastating this Conkeldurr variant can be, here are damage calcs of how much a +1 Mach Punch inflicts on various threats:

Without a Guts Boost:
0/0 Lucario: 108.9% - 128.1%
0/0 Terrakion: 78% - 91.6%
0/0 Mamoswine: 75.3% - 89.8%
0/0 Infernape: 51.5% - 60.8%
0/0 Flygon: 45.2% - 53.8%
0/0 Haxorus (Ononokusu): 43% - 50.5%

After the Guts boost:
0/0 Mamoswine: OHKO
0/0 Infernape: 77.1% - 91.1%
0/0 Garchomp: 49.7% - 58.9%

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

If you find the lack of Leftovers unappealing, Drain Punch is an option that can be used in the third or fourth slot. Though a +1 Drain Punch won’t net you as many KOs as Superpower or Hammer Arm, the Guts boost helps recover any damage taken from attacks or status. A +2 Drain Punch also hits a positive natured 252 HP / 152 Def Hippowdon to the point where Conkeldurr can recover around 100 HP, allowing for longer survivability.

Another method to help Conkeldurr recover health is to pair him up with Wish support, as damage from status and entry hazards due to constantly switching can really take a toll on Conkeldurr. Jirachi does this job best, as its relatively high base HP allows Conkeldurr to recover more health; additionally, Conkeldurr can safely switch in on any Dark attacks Jirachi may lure. Another great partner for Conkeldurr is Drought Ninetales, as the permanent sun lessens the threat of bulky waters, such as Quagsire and Jellicent.

Once again, Gliscor makes the most effective counter to this set, as its high physical bulk and resistance to Conkeldurr’s Fighting STAB allow it to take virtually anything this set can dish out. However, it must choose carefully when to Roost, as a +1 Hammer Arm inflicts 53.4% - 63%, while a +2 deals a hefty 71.2% - 83.9%. All other moves can easily be Roosted on. Skarmory also outspeeds Conkeldurr, but despite its great physical bulk, it should be careful when Roosting on Hammer Arm. It can still slam Conkeldurr for 58.5% - 69.6% with STAB Brave Bird, though.

When countering Conkeldurr, one must always carry pokemon who can take advantage of its weak points. If Conkeldurr is statused, packing a weather changer such as Abomasnow or Hippowdon causes Conkeldurr to rack up more damage, and though status means Guts is activated, poison or burn damage combined with Sandstorm or Hail will quickly wear down Conkeldurr to the point that a faster threat can easily KO it. Since a Choice Band forces Conkeldurr to lock itself into one move, you can bring in a Ghost type if it locks itself into Mach Punch, Hammer Arm, or Superpower, allowing you to set up on the switch. However, you must beware of Payback or Stone Edge on your predicted switch.

[Team Options]

For the sets that do not carry Drain Punch, Wish support is greatly appreciated. Jirachi and Latias are Conkeldurr’s best partners, as their relatively high base HP stats and ability to lure in Dark type attacks allow Conkeldurr to recover as much HP as it can while also finding a safe time to switch in. The two can also handle physical walls Conkeldurr may struggle with, Jirachi handling Skarmory with Thunderbolt and Latias hitting Gliscor with Surf. Both also absorb any Psychic attacks aimed at Conkeldurr, while it can switch in on any Bug or Dark attacks aimed at the pair.

Since bulky Ghost types can easily wall any Conkeldurr variant without Payback, packing a Pursuit user is never a bad idea. Tyranitar makes a great partner for this, as it can take any special hits aimed at Conkeldurr due to the Sandstorm and slam opposing Ghosts on the switch with STAB Pursuit. Adamant Scarfed Krookodile also makes a good choice, as it packs about the same power as a Jolly Tyranitar, but the extra speed allows it to threaten faster foes who can pose a problem for Conkeldurr, such as Crobat, Jolteon, and Alakazam. Both also can switch in on any Psychic attacks Conkeldurr may lure, and proceed to either attack, Pursuit, or set up on the switch.

Paralysis support helps Conkeldurr tremendously, because the faster Conkeldurr is than his opponent, the easier time it has scoring a KO or setting up. Ferrothorn makes a good partner, as it not only provides paralysis support, but it can also set up entry hazards, aiding Conkeldurr in sweeping. However, paralysis also means that Ferrothorn’s Gyro Ball drops in power, as well as the fact that if Conkeldurr carries Payback, it won’t hit at full power. Dragonite can also provide great paralysis support, as it can Thunder Wave and proceed to phase out the opposing pokemon with Dragon Tail. If entry hazards are set up, the constant switching due to Dragonite’s phasing allows Conkeldurr to easily KO entry hazard battered foes.

[Optional Changes]

Offensively, Conkeldurr has a fair amount of other options he can utilize. As mentioned in the analysis, Drain Punch can be used on the SubPunch or Choice Band sets if you keep Conkeldurr’s HP at a comfortable level. Low Kick is an option for heavier foes, as it hits Pokemon like Snorlax harder than Hammer Arm. However, lighter threats such as Jirachi can easily take a Low Kick and set up on your switch or simply attack. If you want Conkeldurr to provide its own paralysis support, Force Palm is an option, as the 30% paralysis rate allows Conkeldurr to cripple faster threats. However, Force Palm is illegal with Mach Punch, and the utility of a STAB priority move coming off base 140 attack is too much for Conkeldurr to give up for a paralysis chance of only 30%.

Though Guts is generally the superior option in terms of ability, Conkeldurr can run a Sheer Force + LO set consisting of moves which benefit from the ability. However, the only decent moves that Conkeldurr can run along with Sheer Force are Force Palm, Poison Jab, and Rock Slide, all which are not too powerful even after the boost, with Force Palm only reaching 78 BP before STAB. Sheer Force also means that Boiling Water and Will-O-Wisp ruin you completely, something that is not a problem if running Guts.

[Counters]

Gliscor is probably the most solid counter to Conkeldurr, as it can take any of it’s moves and whittle Conkeldurr down with Earthquake. However, it must beware of when to Roost, such as when the Choice Banded set is statused. In the case of Poison Heal Gliscor variants who carry Toxic Orbs, they should Fling their item prior to facing Conkeldurr, as the status can activate Guts. Once relieved of its item, Gliscor can proceed to attack Conkeldurr with STAB, boosted Acrobat, while still maintaining the ability to take all of Conkeldurr’s moves. Skarmory also makes a nice counter due to its immense physical bulk and access to STAB Brave Bird, as well as the ability to phaze you out, nullyfying any Bulk Up boosts. However, one must beware of Guts boosted Hammer Arm coming off the Choice Band set, as any Stealth Rock damage plus Brave Bird recoil equals a dead Skarmory. Skarmory, like Gliscor, should beware of when to Roost, as any of Conkeldurr’s Guts boosted Fighting STAB moves really hurt once you rid yourself of your Flying type. Another physical wall who counters Conkeldurr to a lesser extent is Hippowdon, and, though it is not as effective as Skarmory or Gliscor, it can still take most of Conkeldurr’s moves, attack with Earthquake, and Slack Off any damage. The permanent Sandstorm also allows for residual damage on Conkeldurr, making it easier to take out if it's not carrying Drain Punch. If carrying Toxic and Stockpile, Hippowdon can stall out Conkeldurr with lower health, as the Sandstorm plus Toxic damage will rack up with every turn, while you just Slack Off any damage. However, Hippowdon should not use this strategy against a healthier Conkeldurr, as the status means the Guts boost is activated, and Hammer Arm or Superpower coming off the Choice Banded set can seriously dent you.

Ghost types, such as Gengar and Mismagius, can easily come in on a predicted Fighting move and either attack Conkeldurr’s weaker SpD with STAB Shadow Ball or set up on the switch in case of the Choice Band variants. However, one must be careful when switching in physically frail Ghost types, as a predicted Payback coming off Conkeldurr’s attack stat can still KO despite the fact that it is not at full power. Bulky Ghost types such as Dusknoir can easily take anything that Conkeldurr can throw (bar boosted Payback) and steadily wear it down or set up.

[Dream World]

Conkeldurr gains the ability Iron Fist through Dream World. It can make a great option offensively for Conkeldurr, and, once released, it can be switched with Guts on the SubPunch set, as the Substitute can block out status while Iron Fist boosts both Focus Punch and Mach Punch. Even a 0/0 Heracross takes 71.5% - 84.4% from Iron Fist boosted Focus Punch, as well as an additional 19.2% - 22.8% from Mach Punch. If Stealth Rock is set up, Heracross loses 12.5%, meaning a Focus Punch followed by Mach Punch will KO Heracross. Conkeldurr can also run a great Expert Belt set, as Iron Fist + Expert Belt Mach Punch OHKOes Excadrill. Drain Punch also gets a boost, meaning Conkeldurr can maintain a healthy HP while still taking a chunk out of the opponent.

[/QUOTE]

Payback gives Conkeldurr superior coverage over Stone Edge, and the fact that its so slow means that you'll usually be recieving the boost. It is also one of Conkeldurr's moves that allow him to set up on Ghost types. The low accuracy of Stone Edge means a miss allows said Ghosts hit you hard with a special move, which is made worse by the fact that you can't Drain Punch. Payback also it your best means of hitting Reuniclus, Cresselia, and Slowbro as they can take Stone Edge with relative ease.

I'm sorry but I've been playing with Conkeldurr for months and I'll tell you what's wrong with this reasoning. Payback is technically better coverage, but it is not more useful on Conkeldurr. If you plan to attack Psychics with it, the slower ones like Reuniclus and Slowbro take the same damage as Stone Edge. The faster ones either OHKO you with Psychic or are frail enough to die either way. Regardless, Conkeldurr should not stay in against Psychic types anyway.

Against Ghosts, again, either OHKO Gengar and Chandelure. Stone Edge prevents you from getting Mummy from Cofagrigus. Jellicent and Dusclops are Bulk Up fodder, they'll die either way. The only one Payback is superior against is Golurk. It simply isn't necessary.

Meanwhile, SE is far better against flying pokemon because it can actually OHKO many. Payback is worthless against Gyarados, Volcerona, Zapdos, Dragonite, the list goes on. It simply helps you get far more OHKOs and is just as effective against most of the things you'd only use Payback on.

My point is, if you prefer to use Payback, that's your choice. But to say it's the superior option just isn't founded.

I spent probably too much time and effort thinking about and doing math for the matchup between Conkeldurr and Nidoking, posted in the Nidoking analysis thread here. There may be some relevant insights.

Just a minor nitpick, in the part about Skarmory, it says:

...securing a OHKO...

If you read like I do, you read it as "Oh-aech-kay-oh", not "One hit KO/knock out". So, its very awkward to read. If most people don't read like I do, c'est la vie.

Just saying couldn't you use a flame orb on the leftovers set and just move the ev's from hp into either attack or sp. def? I found this to be very useful at just breaking holes in the opponents team.

Given that this has its QC checks, here is a quick GP check. It won't count but it should help the actual guys.

Simple Grammar/Spelling changes

Also, I got rid of some weird formatting.

Finally, I should point out that Jirachi does not often lure in Bug- and Dark-type moves, as is often suggested.

[Overview]

Conkeldurr shows what it takes to be an offensive powerhouse when Speed isn't its strongest suit an asset. Its 140 base Attack means that every hit from Conkeldurr is going to hurt. and with Guts as an ability, burning Conkeldurr will only lead to more destruction. Those stone slabs Conkeldurr holds aren't for show either, as it is as durable as the slabs are. While base 65 Special Defense may not seem like much, it's backed by 105 base HP and 95 base Defense.

624 Attack and 339 Defense after a Bulk Up is nothing to screw around with, and Conkeldurr shows the reasons why. Drain Punch allows Conkeldurr to tank through the opposition by hitting the opponent hard while recovering lost health. Mach Punch gives Conkeldurr utility for in revenge killing threats such as Lucario and Doryuuzu, while being able to bypass its Speed issue. Payback is the preferred move as Conkeldurr can set up on Ghost-types such as Dusknoir and receive a free Attack boost thanks to the many Ghost-types carrying Will-O-Wisp.

There are a lot of ways to EV Conkeldurr. When using Payback, a Brave nature with a 0 Speed IV is recommended. Max HP is never a bad option as it keeps Conkeldurr sturdy on the specially defensive end of the spectrum while further improving its physical bulk further. Boiling Water won't even 4HKO Conkeldurr, while +1 Drain Punch can fully recover Conkeldurr's lost health.

Conkeldurr's main issues are Pokemon that resist or are immune to Fighting-type attacks. While Payback or Stone Edge can alleviate some of the problem, neither is the end-all a complete solution. Gengar can help a lot since it hits many Psychic-types hard with STAB Shadow Ball; in return, Conkeldurr keeps Tyranitar away from Gengar.

move2: Focus Punch
move3: Mach Punch
move4: Payback / Stone Edge

Payback makes sure that no Ghost-types will be willing to switch into Conkeldurr; as even +0 Payback can 2HKO Dusknoir while Dusknoir won’t even break Conkeldurr’s Substitute with Shadow Punch.

Drain Punch can be opted utilized in the second slot so Conkeldurr can play more of a tanking role, as well as recover off any damage received hitpoints lost from Substitute. If you really want to buff up your attacks, Life Orb is an option; however, it does not change any significant 2HKOs into OHKOs.

Since this Conkeldurr variant lacks any sufficient means of HP recovery, Wish support greatly aids it in recovering any health lost by status or Substitute use.

Poison Heal Gliscor is probably the best counter, and as with physical investment it can come in and survive most of Conkeldurr’s moves, Fling, and wear down Conkeldurr with STAB boosted Acrobat as well as prevent any Substitutes with Taunt. However, you probably should Fling your Toxic Orb prior to facing Conkeldurr, as you may risk activating its Guts ability. A problem with the Sand Veil Gliscor variants is that they must be careful when to Roost, as a predicted STAB, unresisted Focus Punch can seriously put a dent in your HP. Bulky Psychic-types can come in and wall this Conkeldurr set if it opts for Stone Edge over Payback. Cresselia, Latias, and Reuniclus can all come in on any Fighting moves, break the sub with STAB Psychic attacks, and continue to whittle down Conkeldurr or set up on the switch. If carrying Stone Edge over Payback, Golurk completely walls Conkeldurr, and can set up on the switch or slowly wear it down with Earthquake.

name: Choice Band

move2: Mach Punch
move3: Stone Edge
move4: Payback
item: Choice Band
ability: Guts
nature: Adamant
evs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

With a Choice Band and the EVs listed, Conkeldurr reaches a ridiculous attack stat of 624, and a gargantuan stat of 936 after a Guts boost. To show just how terrifying of a threat this variant can be, Mach Punch deals 95.3% - 113% to a 0/0 Doryuuzu, meaning Stealth Rock, plus one layer of Spikes, or a Guts boost ensures a definite KO. After the Guts boost, Superpower OHKOs 252 / 252 Vaporeon, as well as the “standard” Skarmory with Stealth Rock in play. However, if opting for Hammer Arm over Superpower, Speed EVs need to be invested if you want to outspeed Hippowdon after the speed drop and avoid giving the opponent any opportunities to Slack Off the damage (unless paralyzed, which means you're pretty much useless) [Atheno Note: this would activate Guts and enable it to beat Hippowdon anyway.. In the case of 252 / 252 Hippowdon variants, Superpower will inflict 78.1% - 92.1%, meaning entry hazard support may be required to ensure an OHKO. The last two slots offer Conkeldurr coverage against various threats. A Max HP / Max Def Spiritomb with a positive nature takes 42.8% - 50.3% from an unboosted Stone Edge, while with the Guts boost it inflicts 63.8% - 75.3%.

0/0 Lucario: 108.9% - 128.1% OHKO
0/0 Terrakion: 78% - 91.6%
0/0 Mamoswine: 75.3% - 89.8%
0/0 Infernape: 51.5% - 60.8%
0/0 Flygon: 45.2% - 53.8%
0/0 Haxorus (Ononokusu): 43% - 50.5%

After the Guts boost:
0/0 Mamoswine: OHKO
0/0 Infernape: 77.1% - 91.1%
0/0 Garchomp: 49.7% - 58.9%

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

If you find the lack of Leftovers unappealing, Drain Punch is an option that can be used in the third or fourth slot. Though a +1 Drain Punch won’t net you as many KOs as Superpower or Hammer Arm, the Guts boost helps recover any damage taken from attacks or status. A +2 Drain Punch also hits a positive natured 252 HP / 152 Def Hippowdon to the point where Conkeldurr can recover around 100 HP, allowing for longer greater survivability.

Another method to help Conkeldurr recover health is to pair him up with Wish support, as damage from status and entry hazards due to constantly switching can really take a toll on Conkeldurr. Jirachi does this job best, as its relatively high base HP allows Conkeldurr to recover more health; and additionally, Conkeldurr can safely switch in on any Dark attacks Jirachi may lure.

If entry hazards are set up, the constant switching due to Dragonite’s phazing allows Conkeldurr to easily KO entry hazard battered foes.

[Optional Changes]

Offensively, Conkeldurr has a fair amount number of other options he can use. As mentioned in the analysis, Drain Punch can be used on the SubPunch or Choice Band sets if you to keep Conkeldurr’s HP at a comfortable level.

[Counters]

Gliscor is probably the most solid counter to Conkeldurr, as it can take any of its moves and whittle Conkeldurr down with Earthquake. However, it must beware of when to Roost, such as when the Choice Banded set is statused. In the case of Poison Heal Gliscor variants who carry Toxic Orbs, they should Fling their item prior to facing Conkeldurr, as the status can activate Guts. Once relieved of its item, Gliscor can proceed to attack Conkeldurr with a STAB, boosted Acrobat, while still maintaining the ability to take all of Conkeldurr’s moves. Another physical wall, who counters Conkeldurr to a lesser extent, is Hippowdon, and, though it is not as effective as Skarmory or Gliscor, it can still take most of Conkeldurr’s moves, attack with Earthquake, and Slack Off any damage. However, Hippowdon should not use this strategy against a healthier Conkeldurr, as the status means the Guts boost is activated, and Hammer Arm or Superpower coming off the Choice Banded set can seriously dent you it.

Ok, adressing time:

@DJXO9: Thanks for clarifying that. Fix'd now.

@Athenodoros and Dummy007: Thanks for the input! I looked at both of the checks and implemented most of the changes. Once again, sincerly, thank you both.

@KidX: Conkeldurr really shouldn't exactly induce status on itself, as residual damage without recovery (Leftovers) doesn't let it stick around for long. I guess it could work, I'll put it in the OC.

@tomtom5858: OHKO is the abbreviation of "One hit knock-out", so thats why I used it.

[Overview]

Conkeldurr shows what it takes to be an offensive powerhouse when Speed isn't its strongest suit. Its 140 base Attack means that every hit from Conkeldurr is going to hurt, and with Guts as an ability, burning Conkeldurr will only lead to more destruction. Those stone slabs Conkeldurr holds aren't for show either, as it is as durable as the slabs are. While base 65 Special Defense may not seem like much, it's backed by 105 base HP and 95 base Defense.

Mach Punch gives Conkeldurr utility in revenge killing threats such as Lucario and Doryuuzu, able to bypass its Speed issue.

This allows Conkeldurr to use Payback at maximum power against most of its opposition, although this means Wobbuffet can outspeed and Encore Conkledurr. Max HP is never a bad option as it keeps Conkeldurr sturdy on the specially defensive end of the spectrum while further improving its physical bulk. Boiling Water won't even 4HKO Conkeldurr, while +1 Drain Punch can fully recover Conkeldurr's lost health.

If you opt to use 120 HP / 252 Atk / 136 SpD with an Adamant Nature, Burungeru’s Boil Over won’t break Conkeldurr’s Substitute most of the time (22% - 26.2%). Poison Heal Gliscor is probably the best counter, as with physical investment it can come in and survive most of Conkeldurr’s moves, Fling, and wear down Conkeldurr with STAB boosted Acrobat as well as prevent any Substitutes with Taunt. However, you probably should Fling your Toxic Orb prior to facing Conkeldurr, as you may risk activating its Guts ability. A problem with the Sand Veil Gliscor variants is that they must be careful when to Roost, as a predicted STAB, unresisted Focus Punch can seriously put a dent in your HP Gliscor. Bulky Psychic-types can come in and wall this Conkeldurr set if it opts for Stone Edge over Payback. Cresselia, Latias, (Latias rarely, if ever uses Psychic-type moves) and Reuniclus can all come in on any Fighting moves, break the sub with STAB Psychic attacks, and continue to whittle down Conkeldurr or set up on the switch. If carrying Stone Edge over Payback, Golurk completely walls Conkeldurr, and can set up on the switch or slowly wear it down with Earthquake.

[SET]
name: Choice Band
move1: Hammer Arm / Superpower

move3: Stone Edge
move4: Payback
item: Choice Band
ability: Guts
nature: Adamant
evs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

With a Choice Band and the EVs listed, Conkeldurr reaches a ridiculous attack stat of 624, and a gargantuan stat of 936 after a Guts boost. To show just how terrifying of a threat this variant can be, Mach Punch deals 95.3% - 113% to a 0/0 Doryuuzu, meaning Stealth Rock, one layer of Spikes, or a Guts boost ensures a definite KO. After the Guts boost, Superpower OHKOs 252 / 252 Vaporeon, as well as the “standard” Skarmory with Stealth Rock in play. However, if opting for Hammer Arm over Superpower, Speed EVs need to be invested if you want to outspeed Hippowdon after the speed drop and avoid giving the opponent any opportunities to Slack Off the damage.

0/0 Lucario: OHKO
0/0 Terrakion: 78% - 91.6%
0/0 Mamoswine: 75.3% - 89.8%
0/0 Infernape: 51.5% - 60.8%
0/0 Flygon: 45.2% - 53.8%
0/0 Haxorus: 43% - 50.5%

After the Guts boost:
0/0 Mamoswine: OHKO
0/0 Infernape: 77.1% - 91.1%
0/0 Garchomp: 49.7% - 58.9%

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

If you find the lack of Leftovers unappealing, Drain Punch is an option that can be used in the third or fourth slot. Though a +1 Drain Punch won’t net you as many KOs as Superpower or Hammer Arm, the Guts boost helps recover any damage taken from attacks or status. A +2 Drain Punch also hits a positive natured 252 HP / 152 Def Hippowdon to the point where Conkeldurr can recover around 100 HP, allowing for greater survivability.

Another method to help Conkeldurr recover health is to pair him up with Wish support, as damage from status and entry hazards due to constantly switching can really take a toll on Conkeldurr. Jirachi does this job best, as its relatively high base HP allows Conkeldurr to recover more health and additionally Conkeldurr can safely switch in on any Dark attacks Jirachi may lure.

If entry hazards are set up, the constant switching due to Dragonite’s phazing allows Conkeldurr to easily KO entry hazard battered foes.

[Optional Changes]

Offensively, Conkeldurr has a fair number of other options he can use. As mentioned in the analysis, Drain Punch can be used on the SubPunch or Choice Band sets to keep Conkeldurr’s HP at a comfortable level. (No need to mention Drain Punch on those sets here when they were already mentioned in the respective sets) Low Kick is an option for heavier foes, as it hits Pokemon like Snorlax harder than Hammer Arm. However, lighter threats such as Jirachi can easily take a Low Kick and set up on your the switch or simply attack.

Sheer Force also means that Boiling Water Scald and Will-O-Wisp ruin you completely, something that is not a problem if running Guts.

Conkeldurr can also run a set that revolves entirely around Guts by using either a Flame or Toxic Orb. This allows it to take advantage of the Guts boost without fail, instead of relying on the opponent to set up status. However, this means Conkeldurr will not recieve residual HP recovery thanks to Leftovers, and it must run Drain Punch to recover off any damage aquired from status or rely heavily on Wish support.

[Counters]

Gliscor is probably the most solid counter to Conkeldurr, as it can take any of its moves and whittle Conkeldurr down with Earthquake STAB Acrobatics. However, it must beware of when to Roost, such as when the Choice Banded set is statused. In the case of Poison Heal Gliscor variants that carry Toxic Orbs, they should Fling their item prior to facing Conkeldurr, as the status can activate Guts. Once relieved of its item, Gliscor can proceed to attack Conkeldurr with a STAB, boosted Acrobat Acrobatics, while still maintaining the ability to take all of Conkeldurr’s moves. Skarmory also makes a nice counter due to its immense physical bulk and access to STAB Brave Bird, as well as the ability to phaze you Conkledurr out, nullifying any Bulk Up boosts. Another physical wall, who counters Conkeldurr to a lesser extent, is Hippowdon, and, though it is not as effective as Skarmory or Gliscor, it can still take most of Conkeldurr’s moves, attack with Earthquake, and Slack Off any damage. The permanent Sandstorm also allows for residual damage on Conkeldurr, making it easier to take out if it's not carrying Drain Punch. If carrying Toxic and Stockpile, Hippowdon can stall out Conkeldurr with lower health, as the Sandstorm plus Toxic damage will rack up with every turn, while you Hippowdon will just Slack Off any damage. However, Hippowdon should not use this strategy against a healthier Conkeldurr, as the status means the Guts boost is activated, and Hammer Arm or Superpower coming off the Choice Banded set can seriously dent it.

Ghost types, such as Gengar and Mismagius, can easily come in on a predicted Fighting move and either attack Conkeldurr’s weak SpD with STAB Shadow Ball or set up on the switch in case of the Choice Band variants.

I'm getting a feeling that Machamp has been replaced by Conkeldurr. Has any of you guys seen the new pokemon black and white anime on Cartoon Network. So far it is getting really good.

I'm getting a feeling that Machamp has been replaced by Conkeldurr.
This may be more suited for Uncharted Territory, but yes, Conkeldurr does have certain strong points over Machamp, but Machamp still has a coupple of redeeming qualities, like 100% accurate Dynamicpunch, and plays a few roles better than Conkeldurr, such as an anti-lead.

my first comment didnt grab too much attention so i'll restate it. conkeldurr is the slowest fully evolved fighter in the game and has the highest attack of any as well. along with the ability guts i think it deserves a trick room guts sweeper set. the set itself should be self explanatory, or just refer to my last comment.

It's just the Bulk Up set with Brave nature. You don't even need to change anything else.

Another thing about Trick Room is that Conkeldurr can't abuse Payback's full power, as it will generally always go first. Also, since it can't set up Trick Room by itself, you've pretty much got a slow, vurnerable pokemon if the pokemon you depend on to set up Trick Room gets KO'd. And, like A Man In Black said, the Bulk Up set can be used under a Trick Room due to the Brave w/ 0 Spe IVs.

how is it the bulk up set with a brave nature? does any bulk up set ever use 1. no bulk up 2. hammer arm/superpower 3. facade 4. EdgeQuake 5. flame orb.....i dont really get how that's an argument against the set. not that many TR sweepers use trick room themselves...like octillery clamperl rampardos ursaring aggron rhyperior marowak from 4th gen. the sets really wouldnt be the same at all. even you yourself have stone edge slashed with payback everywhere so saying its bad cuz it cant use payback is kinda contradictory to yourself. if thats you really think that then get rid of stone edge slash.

Well, if using a minus speed nature, Conkeldurr will usually opt for Payback, which doesn't work well under Trick Room. And I playtested a TR Conkeldurr a bit, and I must say, even if you opt for Stone Edge, slower Psychic types, especially Reuniclus and Slowbro, revenge kill you under Tirck Room. And again, if your Trick Room support pokemon dies before you send out Conkeldurr, you leave him completely vurnerable. It already has Mach Punch, so it needn't have to worry too much on outspeeding anything. Another prolem I've found is that it has to rely heavily on Wish and Rapid Spin support, as the the burn damage racks up. You'll also probably be switching out once Trick Rroom runs out, meaning you'll take Spikes or SR damage upon switching in, making you take more damage. The Bulk up set has Drain Punch, so it this really is not a problem. I'll play around with it some more, but I find it better to run the Bulk Up set under TR rather that dedicate an entire set to it.

that's a good response and something i respect as a rebuttal to my idea. but a couple things. "Well, if using a minus speed nature, Conkeldurr will usually opt for Payback, which doesn't work well under Trick Room." conk isn't gonna have payback on a designed trickroom set. simple as that. a -speed payback is for bulk up and shit. with -speed and 0 ivs conk will go first against slowbro and ranks in trick room unless they run -spe or less than 20 ivs. 31 iv neutral natured slows and ranks are faster thank -spe 0 iv conk. while they will be able to take a hit and kill with stab psychic, it doesnt make the set completely unviable just because you can name two counters. "And again, if your Trick Room support pokemon dies before you send out Conkeldurr, you leave him completely vurnerable." this can be said about any trick room sweeper who doesn't use it themselves. this is generally why you have at least 3 TR users on a trick room team. it might not deserve a set on it's own, but i'm just saying. seems good enough on paper.

Just one more problem with the psychic counters though: if its not using Payback, Conk will be forced to hit them with either Stone Edge or Earthquake, both which inflict 21.6% - 25.6% to 252 HP / 252 Def Slowbro, which can then easily take you out with Psychic. Payback itself also only inflicts 21.8% - 25.9% if it catches Slowbro on the switch, allowing it to take you out. Again, I'll try it out some more, but it seems to be more of an AC option than having a full on set.

From the CB set:
"A +2 Drain Punch also hits a positive natured 252 HP / 152 Def Hippowdon to the point where Conkeldurr can recover around 100 HP, allowing for greater survivability."

Assuming you believe +2 comes from Guts and Choice Band, this is not true. Guts is a 1.5 multiplier, and Choice Band is a 1.5 multiplier, neither one of them being +anything. This works most of the time because 1.5X=+1 but this is not the case for +2, because 1.5X1.5=2.25

Hope this helps

Again, Conkeldurr shouldn' be trying to fight Reuniclus and Slowbro anyway, those are his counters. He really doesn't need Payback because it doesn't help him secure any important OHKOs unlike Stone Edge, which I pointed out once already.

then i guess slowbro is simply an all around solid counter lol. you just said it does fuckall with payback on the switch in so the same scenario is true for the bulk up set then. and if youre saying yourself 'if not using stone edge not payback then you're screwed,' then why do you even have it slashed on your own sets. youre contradicting yourself by saying it makes you vulnerable on the set i'm saying, while having it on your own at the same time.

[Overview]

Conkeldurr shows what it takes to be an offensive powerhouse when Speed isn't the strongest suit. Its 140 base Attack means that every hit from Conkeldurr is going to hurt, and with Guts as an ability, burning Conkeldurr will only lead to more destruction. Those stone slabs Conkeldurr holds aren't for show either, as it is just as (if not more) durable as they are. While base 65 Special Defense may not seem like much, it's backed by 105 base HP and 95 base Defense. Conkeldurr lacks Close Combat, but holds two attacks that many bulky Fighting-types would beg to have, namely Mach Punch and Drain Punch. Conkeldurr is just one of the main reasons you should have a Fighting-type resist on your team.

[SET COMMENTS]

624 Attack and 339 Defense after a Bulk Up is nothing to screw around with, and Conkeldurr shows the reasons why. Drain Punch allows Conkeldurr to tank through the opposition by hitting the opponent hard while recovering lost health. Mach Punch gives Conkeldurr utility in revenge killing threats such as Lucario and Doryuuzu, able to bypassing its Speed issue. The combination of these two attacks and Bulk Up makes Conkeldurr a formidable threat once the opposition no longer holds a good Fighting-type resist. Guts is icing on the cake since status effects such as burn and paralysis only make Conkeldurr stronger. Just to show how much of a monster Conkeldurr becomes with Guts activated, its +1 Drain Punch OHKOes min HP / min Def Garchomp and is inches away from 2HKOing max HP / max Def Hippowdon. The final move is your choice: you can either shut down Ghost-types with a slow Payback, or prevent Flying-types from wrecking your sweep with an explosive Stone Edge. Payback is usually the preferred move though, as it will allow Conkeldurr to set up on Ghost-types such as Dusknoir. This will also make it more likely to receive a free Attack boost from Guts thanks to the many Ghost-types that carry Will-O-Wisp.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS] (moved)

There are a lot of ways to EV Conkeldurr. When using Payback, a Brave nature with a 0 Speed IV is recommended as this will allow Conkeldurr to use Payback at maximum power against most of its opponents, although this will also mean that Wobbuffet can outspeed and Encore Conkledurr. An Adamant nature can be used with Stone Edge since the Speed drop is unnecessary. The current EV spread mimics Machamp's durability to an extent, trading slightly inferior Special Defense for superior Defense. If you want more specific EVs, a spread of 68 HP / 224 Atk / 216 SpD Adamant allows Conkeldurr to take a Timid Shandera's Overheat. While slightly inefficient, 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 SpD Adamant can also work as it retains Conkeldurr's maximum power while buffing Conkeldurr's weaker defensive side. With this spread, Crocune will fail to 4HKO Conkeldurr so long as Sandstorm isn't in play. This allows Conkeldurr to comfortably obtain two Bulk Ups and follow up with Drain Punch to recover the health lost from Scald. If Crocune decides to Calm Mind, it would need to Calm Mind 6 times to even KO Conkeldurr. A Careful nature with that same spread will allow even easier set-up, but will also result in a critical loss in power. Max HP is never a bad option as it keeps Conkeldurr sturdy on the specially defensive end of the spectrum while further improving its physical bulk. This means that, when facing Conkeldurr, Skarmory must either spam Brave Bird, Whirlwind it out (thus risking a chance of Conkeldurr recovering health after the first Bulk Up and following up with Drain Punch), or Roost, securing an OHKO from Drain Punch. One can choose to be more defensive, though keep in mind that Conkeldurr will then not be an immediate threat until it uses Bulk Up a few times. 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD Careful allows Conkeldurr to set up on Pokemon such as Vaporeon easily. Boiling Water won't even 4HKO Conkeldurr, while +1 Drain Punch can fully recover Conkeldurr's lost health.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Conkeldurr's main issues are Pokemon that resist or are immune to Fighting-type attacks. While Payback or Stone Edge can alleviate the problem, neither is a complete solution. If Conkeldurr is using Payback, make sure to pack Pokemon that can take down Flying-types. If Conkeldurr is running Stone Edge, its teammates need to be able to handle Ghost-types. Stealth Rock is highly recommended to deter Flying-types such as Boroturosu and Zapdos from wrecking Conkeldurr. Spikes or Toxic Spikes are never a bad idea, as both prevent Conkeldurr from being stalled out by Hippowdon. Scarf Tyranitar is a great Pokemon to pair alongside Conkeldurr. While the sandstorm nullifies Leftovers recovery, Tyranitar eliminates many of Conkeldurr’s threats.

Payback makes sure that no Ghost-types will be willing to switch into Conkeldurr, as even an unboosted Payback can 2HKO Dusknoir, while Dusknoir won’t even be able to break Conkeldurr’s Substitute with Shadow Punch. Sadly, 0 SpA Burungeru does 26% minimum with Scald on max HP Conkeldurr. If You can opt to use 120 HP / 252 Atk / 136 SpD with an Adamant Nature though, whereby that won’t break Conkeldurr’s Substitute most of the time (22% - 26.2%). Stone Edge helps keep switch-ins such as Zapdos and Salamence out of the picture.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Offensively, Conkeldurr has many more options he can utilize. Drain Punch is one of them, and it can go in the second slot so Conkeldurr can play more of a tanking role as well as recover off any hitpoints lost from Substitute. If you really want to buff up your attacks, Life Orb is an option; however, it does not change any significant 2HKOs into OHKOs. If you find Stone Edge's accuracy unappealing, Rock Slide can be used instead, although the power drop can be just as unappealing.

Since this Conkeldurr variant lacks any sufficient means of HP recovery, Wish support greatly aids it in recovering any health lost by status or Substitute use. As Conkeldurr lacks an immunity it can switch into, it is best to pair it up with Pokemon who can set up Wishes as well as lure in one of Conkeldurr’s resistances. Alomomola and Vaporeon work well because of their reasonable bulk and enormous base HP stats, allowing Conkeldurr to take full benefit of the Wish.

Though unnecessary, a Dual Screen user can provide Conkeldurr with increased bulk to allow longer-lasting Substitutes. Cresselia does a fantastic job at this, as it offers almost unmatched bulk and can set up both screens with relative ease. It also resists any Psychic attacks aimed at Conkeldurr, easily shrugging them off and immediately setting up. Conkeldurr also resists any Bug or Dark attacks Cresselia may lure, giving it safe opportunities to switch in. Reuniclus also makes a great partner for setting up screens, as its nice bulk coupled with Magic Guard allows it to easily set up. Xatu also does a decent job at setting up screens, and needn’t fear getting Taunted due to Magic Mirror. Conkeldurr can also absorb any Rock attacks Xatu may attract, while Xatu absorbs any Psychic attacks aimed at Conkeldurr.

As far as counters go, there is no “solid” method to beat this Conkeldurr variant. The closest things to one are Pokemon that can take a few Focus Punches, break Conkeldurr’s Substitute, and continue to wear it down. Skarmory can slowly wear Conkeldurr down with STAB Brave Bird; however, it is still 2HKOed by Focus Punch, and if it incorrectly predicts to Roost, it will almost always result in a OHKO. Poison Heal Gliscor is probably the best counter, as with physical investment, it can come in and survive most of Conkeldurr’s moves, Fling a Toxic Orb onto it, and wear down Conkeldurr with STAB-boosted Acrobat as well as prevent any Substitutes with Taunt. A problem with the Sand Veil Gliscor variants is that they must be careful of when to Roost, as a neutral Focus Punch can put a serious dent in Gliscor. Bulky Psychic-types can come in and wall this Conkeldurr set if it opts for Stone Edge over Payback. Cresselia and Reuniclus can all come in on any Fighting moves, break the sub with STAB Psychic attacks, and continue to whittle down Conkeldurr or set up on the switch. If carrying Stone Edge over Payback, Golurk completely walls Conkeldurr, and can set up on the switch or slowly wear it down with Earthquake.

[SET COMMENTS]

With a Choice Band and the EVs listed, Conkeldurr reaches a ridiculous attack stat of 624, and a gargantuan stat of 936 after a Guts boost. To show just how terrifying of a threat this variant can be, Mach Punch deals 95.3% - 113% to a 0/0 Doryuuzu, meaning Stealth Rock, one layer of Spikes, or a Guts boost ensures a KO. After the Guts boost, Superpower OHKOs 252 / 252 Vaporeon, as well as the “standard” Skarmory with Stealth Rock in play. However, if opting for Hammer Arm over Superpower, Speed EVs need to be invested if you want to outspeed Hippowdon after the Speed drop, and avoid giving the opponent any opportunities to Slack Off the damage. A 252 HP / 228 Def Dusknoir even takes a significant 76.9% - 90.5% from Payback if running a Defense boosting nature.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

To show just how devastating this Conkeldurr variant can be, here are damage calculations on how much a +1 Mach Punch inflicts on various threats:

Without a Guts Boost:
0/0 Lucario: OHKO
0/0 Terrakion: 78% - 91.6%
0/0 Mamoswine: 75.3% - 89.8%
0/0 Infernape: 51.5% - 60.8%
0/0 Flygon: 45.2% - 53.8%
0/0 Haxorus: 43% - 50.5%

After the Guts boost:
0/0 Mamoswine: OHKO
0/0 Infernape: 77.1% - 91.1%
0/0 Garchomp: 49.7% - 58.9%

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

If you find the lack of Leftovers unappealing, Drain Punch is an option that can be used in the third or fourth slot. Though a +1 Drain Punch won’t net you as many KOs as Superpower or Hammer Arm, the Guts boost helps recover any damage taken from attacks or status. A +2 Said Drain Punch (+2 is different from 2 +1s, which is like +2.25) also hits a positive natured 252 HP / 152 Def Hippowdon to the point where Conkeldurr can recover around 100 HP, allowing for greater survivability.

Another method to help Conkeldurr recover health is to pair him up with Wish support, as damage from status and entry hazards due to constantly switching can really take a toll on Conkeldurr. Jirachi does this job best, as its relatively high base HP allows Conkeldurr to recover more health; in addition, Conkeldurr can safely switch in on any Dark attacks Jirachi may lure (its weaknesses r juz fire and ground actually, so u mite want to change tat).

If Conkeldurr is statused, packing a weather changer such as Abomasnow or Hippowdon causes Conkeldurr to rack up even more residual damage, and though status means Guts is activated, poison or burn damage combined with sandstorm or hail will quickly wear down Conkeldurr to the point that a faster threat can easily KO it. Since a Choice Band forces Conkeldurr to lock itself into one move, you can bring in a Ghost type if it locks itself into Mach Punch, Hammer Arm, or Superpower, allowing you to set up on the switch.

[Team Options]

For the sets that do not carry Drain Punch, Wish support is greatly appreciated. Jirachi (once again, mite wanna change tat..) and Latias are Conkeldurr’s best partners, as their relatively high base HP stats and ability to lure in Dark type attacks allow Conkeldurr to recover as much HP as it can while also finding a safe time to switch in. The two can also handle physical walls Conkeldurr may struggle with, Jirachi handling Skarmory with Thunderbolt and Latias hitting Gliscor with Surf. Both also absorb any Psychic attacks that may be aimed at Conkeldurr, while it can switch in on any Bug- or Dark-types attacks aimed at them.

Since bulky Ghost-types can easily wall any Conkeldurr variant without Payback, packing a Pursuit user is never a bad idea. Tyranitar makes a great partner for this, as it can take any special hits aimed at Conkeldurr due to the sandstorm and slam opposing Ghosts on the switch with STAB Pursuit. Adamant Choice Scarfed Krookodile also makes a good choice, as it packs about the same power as a Jolly Tyranitar, but the extra Speed allows it to threaten faster foes who can pose a problem for Conkeldurr, such as Crobat, Jolteon, and Alakazam. Both can also switch in on any Psychic attacks Conkeldurr may lure, and proceed to either attack, Pursuit, or set up on the switch.

However, paralysis also means that Ferrothorn’s Gyro Ball drops in power, not to mention the fact that if Conkeldurr carries Payback, it will hit at full power less often as well. Dragonite can also provide great paralysis support, as it can Thunder Wave and proceed to phase out the opposing pokemon with Dragon Tail. If entry hazards are set up, the constant switching due to Dragonite’s phazing allows Conkeldurr to easily KO entry hazard-battered foes.

[Optional Changes]

Offensively, Conkeldurr has a fair number of other options it can use. Low Kick is an option for heavier foes, as it hits Pokemon like Snorlax harder than Hammer Arm. However, lighter threats such as Jirachi can easily take a Low Kick and set up on the switch or simply attack.

Sheer Force also means that Scald and Will-O-Wisp ruin you completely, something that is not a problem when running Guts.

Conkeldurr can also run a set that revolves entirely around Guts by using either a Flame or Toxic Orb. This allows it to take advantage of the Guts boost without fail, instead of relying on the opponent to set up status it. However, this means Conkeldurr will not receive (spelling) residual HP recovery (no Leftovers), and it must run Drain Punch to recover off any damage aquired from status or rely heavily on Wish support.

[Counters]

Gliscor is probably the most solid counter to Conkeldurr, as it can take any of its moves and whittle Conkeldurr down with STAB Earthquake (do non-DW gliscor run acrobat? shld prob change tat to earthquake, maybe? I'm not too familiar with 5th gen though =\).(space)In the case of Poison Heal Gliscor, they should Fling their item prior to facing Conkeldurr, as the status can activate Guts. Once relieved of its item, Gliscor can proceed to attack Conkeldurr with a STAB-boosted Acrobat, while still maintaining the ability to take all of Conkeldurr’s moves. Skarmory also makes a nice counter due to its immense physical bulk and access to STAB Brave Bird, as well as the ability to phaze Conkledurr out, nullifying any Bulk Up boosts it may acquire. However, one must beware of Guts-boosted Hammer Arm coming off the Choice Band set, as any Stealth Rock damage plus Brave Bird recoil equals a dead Skarmory. Skarmory, like Gliscor, should be wary of when to Roost, as any of Conkeldurr’s Guts boosted Fighting STAB moves really hurt once they rid themselves of their Flying-type. Another physical wall, who counters Conkeldurr, to a lesser extent, is Hippowdon, and though it is not as effective as Skarmory or Gliscor, it can still take most of Conkeldurr’s moves, attack with Earthquake, and Slack Off any damage. The permanent sandstorm in summons also allows for bonus residual damage on Conkeldurr, making it easier to take out if it's not carrying Drain Punch. If carrying Toxic and Stockpile, Hippowdon can stall out Conkeldurr with lower health, as the sandstorm and Toxic damage will really rack up with every turn, while Hippowdon can just Slack Off any damage. However, Hippowdon should not use this strategy against a healthier Conkeldurr, as the status means that Guts boost is activated, and Hammer Arm or Superpower coming off the Choice Banded set in addition to Guts can seriously dent it.

Ghost-types, such as Gengar can easily come in on a predicted Fighting move and either attack Conkeldurr’s weak Special Defense with STAB Shadow Ball or set up on the switch in case of the Choice Band variants. However, one must be careful when switching in physically frail Ghost-types, as a predicted Payback coming off Conkeldurr’s Attack stat can still KO despite the fact that it is not at full power. Bulky Ghost-types such as Dusknoir can easily take anything that Conkeldurr can throw (bar boosted Payback) and steadily wear it down or set up.

[Dream World]

Conkeldurr gains the ability Iron Fist through Dream World. It can make, which can be a great option offensively for Conkeldurr, and, once released, it can be swapped with Guts on the SubPunch set, as the Substitute can block out status while Iron Fist boosts both Focus Punch and Mach Punch. Even a 0/0 Heracross takes 71.5% - 84.4% from an Iron Fist-boosted Focus Punch, as well as an additional 19.2% - 22.8% from Mach Punch. This means that if Stealth Rock is set up, Heracross loses 12.5%, meaning a Focus Punch followed by Mach Punch will KO Heracross. Iron Fist Conkeldurr can also run a great Expert Belt set, as an Iron Fist + Expert Belt Mach Punch OHKOes Excadrill. Drain Punch also gets a boost, meaning Conkeldurr can recover even more health from it, and thus more easily maintain a healthy HP while still taking a chunk out of the opponent.

there are still some awkward sounding sentences here and there.. so if a gp checker stamps this, can i request a last read-through on the last parts? (team options to dream world)
