Hi, I'm new to Gen 9 OU and haven't played much in general, but figured I should make this post after struggling in ladder (though half of it might be skill issue.)
With the addition of various DLC pokemon and the banning of Baxcalibur, I tried making a lil rain team for fun.

Pokemon
Pelipper @ Damp Rock
Ability: Drizzle
Tera Type: Steel
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpA
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Hurricane
- Roost
- Surf
- U-turn
Pelipper is the rain setter for this team. Chose a defensive EV spread for longevity. Tera Steel lets Pelipper survive opposing rain moves, freeze-dry, and water-type weaknesses and take less damage from hazards, though it does make fighting moves a significant threat. U-turn and 0 Spe IVs is used for a slow pivot to Barraskewda, Basculegion-F, or Ogerpon.
Barraskewda @ Choice Band
Ability: Swift Swim
Shiny: Yes
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Crunch
- Psychic Fangs
- Liquidation
- Close Combat
This thing feels broken. Tera Water Liquidation in Rain does enough damage to most pokemon that switching Barraskewda in safely usually warrants a switch from the opponent. Close Combat is chosen here to do relatively consistent damage against bulky Pokemon trying to switch into a Liquidation, but I've found I've nearly never clicked it.
Basculegion-F @ Choice Specs
Ability: Swift Swim
Shiny: Yes
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Ice Beam
- Shadow Ball
- Surf
- Hydro Pump
The special attacker for the team. Functions similarly to Barraskewda. Thinking of replacing this mon with Rotom-W for better coverage and a bit more utility, especially outside of rain. Ghost typing allows it to switch into Normal moves such as Tera Normal Dragonite Espeed or Tera Normal Maushold Population Bomb in rain and outspeed for a heavy hit.
Amoonguss @ Red Card
Ability: Regenerator
Tera Type: Fire
EVs: 248 HP / 176 Def / 84 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Spore
- Grass Knot
- Clear Smog
- Sludge Bomb
This thing is fun. Red Card and defense/spd investment allows it to switch comfortably into setup sweepers at least once. Took the EVs here from the smogon sample - unsure if it's optimal. Tera Fire to be comfortable against Fire and Grass types. Spore is good, but wondering if I should switch to stun spore to have more comfortablee switches into Barraskewda and Basculegion-F.

Ogerpon-Wellspring (F) @ Wellspring Mask
Ability: Water Absorb
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Ivy Cudgel
- Power Whip
- Knock Off
- Synthesis
Ogerpon-Wellspring runs Power Whip here for coverage against opposing Ogerpon and to threaten opposing Rain sweepers trying to take advantage of Pelipper to force a switch. Knock Off is good to blindly click when I'm too scared to make a read. Synthesis for longevity - the Water-Grass typing allows Ogerpon to continuously threaten most Pokemon (somewhat) comfortably.
Heatran @ Leftovers
Ability: Flash Fire
Tera Type: Grass
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Magma Storm
- Earth Power
- Protect
- Tera Blast
Heatran is my main switch-in against special sweepers, especially Gholdengo. Considering trading most SpA EVs for SpD and/or Def, but a strong Earth Power can take out a decent chunk of, say, Gholdengo or Great Tusk on the switch. Magma Storm Protect ensures at least some damage on non-stall mons, and tera grass tera blast for an unexpected kill against Water and Ground types trying to get a kill.
Notes:
Garganacl's Salt Cure deals consistent damage to my whole team - there's not really a good switch in to losing 25% of my health. Amoonguss can switch in and Spore, but Regenerator doesn't heal enough to be reliable.
Freeze-Dry Ninetales-A is a threat to all of my team aside from Heatran. This means a really predictable switch whenever Ninetales comes out, which generally means a free Aurora Veil for the opposing team. Not sure how common Ninetales-A is after the Bax ban, but still annoying to deal with.
Dondozo is somewhat annoying to deal with - my only answer is Grass Knot Amoonguss.
I need to Tera Steel Pelipper to live a +1 Population Bomb from Maushold and U-turn to Basculegion.
Kingambit with ~3 or more fallen with kills most of my team with Sucker Punch reads. I'm finding that I have to sacrifice at least one mon to get a safe switch to Heatran at times, though I can switch Pelipper, bait a Sucker with Basculegion and switch into Heatran there, though this means Heatran doesn't OHKO a healthy Kingambit, requiring Ogerpon to clean up.
That's about it, thanks for reading!
