Introduction

I used Charizard-Mega Y on another team with some success, and so I wanted to try to build a new team around him. I chose Venusaur as a natural partner and selected Landorus-T, Thundurus, Scrafty, and Sylveon afterwards, for reasons I'll discuss one at a time. I'm pretty new to the format, so there may be some flaws in the team, but so far it's worked fairly well for me. Hope you like the team! :)

The Team

charizard-megay.gif

Charizard-Mega-Y @ Charizardite Y
Ability: Blaze
Level: 50
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Heat Wave
- Overheat
- Solar Beam
- Protect

I chose Charizard-Mega Y to build this team around simply because of his amazing offensive stats. He certainly does have weaknesses (Rock slide!), but he can quite often take out at least one pokemon with reasonable damage to more, and a reasonable amount of the time he takes out a larger proportion of the enemy team. He also sets up sun, which is useful because it sets up Venusaur as a powerful offensive threat. The moveset is fairly simple. Heat Wave is solid power and multi-target damage, and Overheat is there for when something just needs to die right that turn. Solar Beam takes out a lot of threats to Charizard, and Protect is there for when I just need to survive (to let a partner take out something with Rock Slide or similarly deadly moves).

venusaur.gif

Venusaur @ Focus Sash
Ability: Chlorophyll
Level: 50
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 30 Atk / 30 Def
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb
- Sleep Powder
- Protect

Venusaur is a natural partner to Charizard (and in fact against many teams I lead with the two of them). Sun makes him a powerful offensive threat due to chlorophyll. Giga Drain and Sludge Bomb are the basic STAB moves. Protect is there just in case I need it, while Sleep Powder is there because Vensaur IS supporting Charizard.

landorus-therian.gif

Landorus-Therian (M) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Intimidate
Level: 50
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- U-turn
- Superpower

I chose Landorus-T because of his excellent capabilities as a Scarf user. Earthquake will KO many enemies, and it can safely partner with Charizard and Thundurus. Rock Slide is the other move Landorus will often use. Sometimes, it's a safer choice, as it avoids harming certain friendly Pokemon while harming enemies with Levitate or flying-type, both of which are pretty common in the VCG metagame. U-turn and Superpower both provide some coverage (and a bit of tempo, in the case of U-turn).

thundurus.gif

Thundurus (M) @ Life Orb
Ability: Prankster
Level: 50
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Psychic
- Protect

I chose Thundurus because he's an excellent partner for Landorus-T, and he provides very good coverage. I chose Thunderbolt and HP Ice simply because they're standard coverage moves. Psychic was selected over Thunder Wave because I simply felt that this team doesn't really NEED the paralysis. The only slow Pokemon I have are Scrafty and Sylveon, and they work well enough together and have enough bulk that I feel the Psychic coverage is more important. However, I'm unsure of my decision - Sylveon, one of the slower pokemon who could be partnered with mostly anyone, has Psyshock (though using that would require her to take a turn off of Hyper Voice) - could use some feedback on which move may work better. Protect is chosen for the same reason you'd pick Protect on mostly anything else.

scrafty.gif

Scrafty @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Intimidate
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 164 Atk / 92 SpD
Careful Nature
- Fake Out
- Drain Punch
- Knock Off
- Protect

I chose Scrafty because he adds a bit of bulk to the team while maintaining a good offensive presence. Fake Out was chosen because it's simply an amazing move in doubles. Drain Punch and Knock Off are Scrafty's standard moves, while Protect is chosen, again, for the same reason any other pokemon would choose it. The Intimidate bonus helps a ton, especially because Scrafty is often partnered with Sylveon, who has excellent special defense but much lower defense.

sylveon.gif

Sylveon @ Pixie Plate
Ability: Pixilate
Level: 50
EVs: 188 HP / 68 Def / 252 SpA
Modest Nature
- Hyper Voice
- Psyshock
- Shadow Ball
- Protect

I added Sylveon both as a partner for Scrafty and also because she does an excellent job partnered with anything - Hyper Voice does tons of damage to multiple targets. Hyper Voice will generally just get spammed, but where necessary, Psyshock and Shadow Ball can be mixed in for the sake of coverage. Protect is there for when she needs it, though Sylveon has great special bulk and thus may not need it too often.

Thank you for reviewing my RMT! I'd appreciate any feedback on my team. :)

This is a pretty decent sun team!

On Thundurus, I would have Thunder Wave over Psychic. Many threats in the VGC format are very powerful and fast, and Prankster Thunder Wave is one way to check them.

Secondly, Solar Beam > Giga Drain on Venusaur. Yes I do understand that Solar Beam has practically no use outside of sun, but with Venusaur's common presence on the field with Char Y it dosen't really matter.

Lastly, HP Ground > Shadow Ball on Sylveon. This is the case because if Landorus-T is defeated or not brought, Heatran dents your team. That is what HP Ground targets.

It's a good team otherwise, hope I could help!

Thanks for the advice! I think you're correct about the Sylveon and Thundurus move changes. The only thing I'm not sure of is Solar Beam. I chose Giga Drain because that way, Venusaur could be useful when facing other weather teams (Rain is encountered pretty often, Tyranitar and Abomasnow are reasonable). Especially against Rain teams, I felt Giga Drain offered more utility. With that being said, Charizard has the advantage of only getting Drought with the Mega Evolution, so his sun will take precedence... But if they switch out or have their weather user in the back, then they get their weather anyway. I'm going to have to see if it's common to run into things that Giga Drain wouldn't KO that Solar Beam would. Thank you for your feedback! =)

This is a really great example of a sun team :)
love the double genies core with charizard, but i would like to suggest some alternatives:

i would definitely suggest running tailwind on charizard, as it benefits charizard, scrafty and sylveon (who is an AMAZING dragon killer) greatly. this would mean amending the charizard spread a little.

suggested spread:

006-mega-y.gif

Charizard-Mega-Y @ Charizardite Y
Ability: Blaze -> Drought
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 116 SpA / 20 SpD / 116 Spe
Modest Nature
- Heat Wave
- Solar Beam
- Tailwind
- Protect

- Survives jolly Mega kangaskhan return 100% of the time
- Survives mamoswine/garchomp rock slide
- outspeeds max speed breloom before tailwind
- Survives Specs Hydreigon Draco Meteor

Markus Stefan used a similar strategy to win Germany nationals. Lead with Scrafty to secure a tailwind with fake out, and sweep from there. it's essentially a set-up Charizard, and after a tailwind, not much can survive sun boosted heat waves plus stuff from sylveon/scrafty :)

Not much to say here since landorus-t is powerful enough already, but an alternative spread of 12 HP / 252 Atk / 92 Def / 4 SpD / 148 Spe with an adamant nature allows it to survive a +1 Life orb sucker punch from bisharp, one of landorus-t's biggest counters :)

A timid Life Orb set is great if you want to taunt other thundurus before they taunt you, but i would recommend investing a bit more into its HP so that it takes less recoil damage from Life Orb, which is a 'Life Orb Number,' which for future reference is 10n-1.
the spread would be:

642.gif

Thundurus @ Life Orb
Ability: Prankster
Level: 50
EVs: 36 HP / 220 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Taunt
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Thunder Wave

this puts its HP stat at 159, minimising damage from life orb :)

I would recommend running a slightly different set on this scrafty:

560.gif

Scrafty @ Assault Vest / Lum Berry
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 244 Atk / 12 Def
Adamant Nature
- Fake Out
- Drain Punch
- Knock Off
- Ice Punch/Quick Guard

Without much investment in attack, scrafty does very little damage to most mons. near-max attack scrafty allows it to do as much damage as possible, and the assault vest allows it to compensate for the loss of its careful nature. 252 HP / 12 Def allows it to take a -1 choice banded brave bird from talonflame, and ice punch is nice coverage for double genies etc. a Lum berry prevents it from being paralysed under tailwind or being burned, which is great for keeping momentum. Quick guard stops talonflame's brave bird which threatens venusaur.

I definitely agree that hidden power ground is its best coverage move, as it can hit heatran, making it a much better partner for mega charizard. i would suggest a slightly different spread:

700.gif

Sylveon @ Pixie Plate
Ability: Pixilate
EVs: 236 HP / 172 Def / 80 SpA / 8 SpD / 12 Spe
Modest Nature
- Hyper Voice
- Hidden Power [Ground]
- Helping Hand
- Protect

Some damage calcs:
  • 252 Atk Parental Bond Mega Kangaskhan Double-Edge vs. 236 HP / 172 Def Sylveon: 169-200 (84.5 – 100%) — 0.4% chance to OHKO
  • 252+ Atk Bisharp Iron Head vs. 236 HP / 172 Def Sylveon: 164-194 (82 – 97%) — guaranteed 2HKO
  • 252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Earthquake vs. 236 HP / 172 Def Sylveon: 84-100 (42 – 50%) — 0.4% chance to 2HKO
  • 252+ SpA Mega Charizard Y Overheat vs. 236 HP / 8 SpD Sylveon in Sun: 169-199 (84.5 – 99.5%) — guaranteed 2HKO
  • 44+ SpA Mega Charizard Y Heat Wave vs. 236 HP / 8 SpD Sylveon in Sun: 81-96 (40.5 – 48%) — guaranteed 3HKO
  • 252+ SpA Life Orb Aegislash-Blade Flash Cannon vs. 236 HP / 8 SpD Sylveon: 174-205 (87 – 102.5%) — 12.5% chance to OHKO
Helping hand is a nice move with all that spread damage being done from charizard/landorus-t, and is usually a last resort move before it dies (for some reason, it always survives with around >10%) so that charizard/landorus can get off a HH boosted heat wave/rock slide in the turn if tailwind is down.

Hope this helps :)
