i made a change in the first post to streamline this, and so when I (or someone) makes a spreadsheet, then its less info to sort through.

While breeding ralts, I came across this gem (well its useless to me, but its a gem in terms of research):

Ralts - Adamant - Alert to Sounds
HP - 28 / ATK - 5 / DEF - 9 / SP. ATK - 13 / SP. DEF - 31 / SPEED - 31

Lets see, me and my friend have been doing some Action Replay(Not with my lovely Bold Crescelia) and using a max IV code here are the results.

31/31/31/31/31/31 Impish Gilgar "Impetous and Silly"
31/31/31/31/31/31 Timid Celebi "A little quick Tempered"
31/31/31/31/31/31 Timid Manaphy "Thoroughly Cunning"
31/31/31/31/31/31 Modest Zapdos "Often Scatters things"
31/31/31/31/31/31 Hasty Chimchar "Often Scatters things"
31/31/31/31/31/31 Bold Suicune "Impetous and Silly"

Weird, the Timid Celebi and Manaphy with the same base stats have different traits, while the Hasty Chimchar and Modest Zapdos do. But my Suicune and Gilgar both have similiar traits, boosting Defense, and have the same characteristic. So it might be random in same IV pokes.

These Pokemon were sharked, right? If so, it seems that their characteristic is random, and hasn't anything to do with the IVs.

Also, after looking through more examples, I'm now fairly convinced that, if there are two or more equal highest IVs, the chosen stat for the characteristic is NOT random.

These are what I'm noticing so far, if there are two or more equal highest IVs:

1) If HP is one of them, it is never chosen for the characteristic.
2) If Defense and/or Special Attack is/are one of them, one of them is chosen around 2/3 of the time.
3) If Speed is one of them, it is chosen around 1/2 of the time.
4) If Attack and/or Special Defense is/are one of them, one of them is chosen around 1/3 of the time.

Not quite.

Just checked on another Modest Togepi.

Okay. Thanks.

So HP can be chosen after all... but it seems like it has a very low probability of this happening.

weavile - adamant - likes to fight

If your Weavile "likes to fight", then its Attack IV is not 31, but either 30, or (probably) 29, according to our theory. Can you please confirm?

This is what I can confirm:

HP...
: Loves to eat - IV's last digit is 0 or 5.
: Often dozes off - IV's last digit is 1 or 6.
: Often naps
: Often scatters things - IV's last digit is 3 or 8.
: Likes to relax

Attack...
: Proud of its power
: Likes to thrash about - IV's last digit is 1 or 6.
: A little quick-tempered
: Hot tempered
: Likes to fight - IV's last digit is 4 or 9.

Defense...
: Sturdy body
: Capable of taking hits - IV's last digit is 1 or 6.
: Highly persistent
: Good endurance
: Good perseverence

Special Attack...
: Highly curious
: Mischievous - IV's last digit is 1 or 6.
: Thoroughly cunning
: Often lost in thought
: Very finicky

Special Defense...
: Strong willed
: Somewhat vain - IV's last digit is 1 or 6.
: Strongly defiant
: Hates to lose
: Somewhat stubborn

Speed...
: Likes to run - IV's last digit is 0 or 5.
: Alert to sounds - IV's last digit is 1 or 6.
: Impetuous and silly
: Somewhat of a clown
: Quick to flee

I'll update this when I confirm more.

Those are most likely what the descriptions mean. As it is about your best stat, you can assume it is most likely to be one of the higher of the ranges for that stat.

For example, Alert to Sounds could mean your pokemon has a 31 Speed IV. Yet it could also be that your Speed IV is 1, and all your other IV's are either 1 or 0 too.

It looks like this method isn't that useful on its own, but great at defining an IV calc that gives you a range of 4-5 or so IV's.

It's not 100% certain that the descriptions are in order though. In fact, I had to reorder the list so that it becomes in the order you listed. That means that the others which haven't been confirmed don't necessarily correspond to that order.

I'm not sure about the 3-5th characteristic for each stat, but the top two are definitely in the right order in the post you just made.

Okay, these last few posts are making me almost convinced that if there are two or more equal highest IVs, the one chosen for the characteristic is random.

I think people can also post Pokemon that have their highest IV less than 30. It would help up rearrange the list in order in the original post.

I don't have hard data (didn't take the time to record), but I just wanted to say that at least for the ones you said you confirmed in the big list, they all seem to hold true that I've checked so far (mostly for 31's). This could be quite useful for low-level babies.

3 days breeding machops makes me craaaaaazy.

I have a Houndour with 31 in Speed who is "Alert to sounds."

My friend has a bunch of Pokemon with 31 in SpAtk who are all (all) Mischievous.

Edit: I have the official strat from Nintendo Power.

Now look at how they list these char.:
Speed-Likes to run/Alert to sounds/Impetuous and silly/Somewhat of a clown/Quick to flee

Conveniently like the original list in the topic.

Now look at it with what we've gathered:
Speed-Likes to run (0 or 5)/Alert to sounds (1 or 6)/Impetuous and silly/Somewhat of a clown/Quick to flee

I know we're still gathering data, but if Nintendo Power is giving a hint at all, then we know what the rest of the characteristics mean.

Edit2: And it's like that for all of them. They all seem to be in numerical order.

Posting a bunch of data, as of request.
