Grimmsnarl takes advantage of its Dark- and Fairy-typing to gain advantages against many of the Ghost- and Dragon-types in the 1v1 metagame. It’s EVs allow it to survive Iron Head from Adamant Choice Scarf Excadrill, along with Icicle Crash from Choice Scarf Galarian Darmanitan, and Iron Tail from Choice Scarf Haxorus. Sucker Punch, along with Choice Band, allows Grimmsnarl to OHKO Pokemon such as Chandelure and Gengar, in addition, the priority allows it to reliably 2HKO Dracovish and Dracozolt, whose signature moves only do double damage if they go first. Spirit Break allows Grimmsnarl to OHKO Choice Dragapult, Choice Scarf Haxorus, and Hydreigon. Spirit Break is used instead of Play Rough because it allows Grimmsnarl to win matchups against Goodra and Choice Scarf Rotom-W due to the special attack drop. Play Rough is a stronger option that allows Grimmsnarl to OHKO Conkeldurr. Trick allows Grimmsnarl to beat stall and Substitute strategies such as Substitute Disable Dragapult, Curse Mimikyu, Galarian Corsola, and Stall Rotom-W. Superpower allows Grimmsnarl to OHKO Excadrill, Galarian Darmanitan, and Tyranitar.
Grimmsnarl struggles with most Steel- and Fairy-types such as Aegislash, Steelix, and Sylveon. For this reason, Grimmsnarl pairs well with Pokemon such as Choice Band Snorlax, Corviknight, and stall Rotom-H. Grimmsnarl can in return beat the Ghost-type Pokemon that can give these Pokemon problems, such as Chandelure, Curse Mimikyu, as well as reliably beating Choice-locked Dracovish. Grimmsnarl also deals with many stall Pokemon such as Galarian Corsola and Stall Rotom-A. This makes it a good teammate for Pokemon who struggle with stall such as Choice Band Sawk, who also helps against Steel-types for Grimmsnarl.
