[OVERVIEW]
Hitmontop's solid movepool and priority allow it to carve itself a niche in PU as a Fighting-type with both defensive utility and power. It has decent bulk and can either sponge hits with Assault Vest or amplify its power with Life Orb. However, Hitmontop is often competing with faster Fighting-types that are not reliant on priority like Choice Scarf Passimian. It is also vulnerable to being worn down throughout the game, especially when running Life Orb. Generally, Hitmontop will only be on specific team structures for its unique combination of power and priority.
[SET]
name: Offensive
move 1: Mach Punch
move 2: Triple Axel
move 3: Thief / Stone Edge
move 4: Fake Out / Rapid Spin
item: Assault Vest / Heavy-Duty Boots / Life Orb
ability: Technician
nature: Adamant
evs: 112 HP / 252 Atk / 144 Spe
[SET COMMENTS]
Triple Axel targets Flying-resistant foes like Altaria and Claydol. Thief allows Hitmontop to have some utility after absorbing Knock Off. Stone Edge allows Hitmontop to OHKO Charizard and Ribombee. Close Combat is a viable alternative move that provides more power, which makes it easier to break through Pokemon like Regirock. Fake Out allows Hitmontop to get Pokemon such as Omastar and Jolteon into Mach Punch range. Bullet Punch is an alternative coverage move to pick off weakened Froslass and Ribombee, but it can be difficult to fit. Assault Vest lets Hitmontop stomach special attacks from wallbreakers like Magmortar and check them. Heavy-Duty Boots gives Hitmontop more sustainability and lets it better support its team with Rapid Spin. Life Orb cuts into Hitmontop's longevity but gives it an easier time picking off Pokemon such as Silvally-Steel with the combination of Fake Out and Mach Punch. The given Speed investment allows Hitmontop to outspeed Silvally formes after Rapid Spin. 172 Speed EVs can be used on Stone Edge variants to outspeed Charizard after Rapid Spin. Due to how easily Hitmontop gets worn down, it appreciates Wish support from Pokemon like Aromatisse. In return, Hitmontop is able to check Pokemon like Aggron and Absol. Regirock and Weezing appreciate Hitmontop being able to pivot into special attacks from Pokemon such as Heliolisk. Spikes setters like Froslass and Garbodor pair nicely with Hitmontop, as they wear Pokemon down into priority range. In return, these Pokemon appreciate Hitmontop providing Rapid Spin support. Absol can weaken shared checks like Regirock with Knock Off and pressure Ghost-types like Cofagrigus.
