Welcome to Smogon! Take a moment to read the Introduction to Smogon for a run-down on everything Smogon, and make sure you take some time to read the global rules.
Let's analyze our submissions and see what we can learn from it
It seems that Steel types do very well vs Latios! Scizor, Jirachi and Heatran all perform a good job at keeping Latios in check defensively.
Shedinja, Umbreon and Blissey all threaten to hardwall Latios, especially Shedinja as it's immune to all of its moves. This is very handy to know when making a stall team.
Gardevoir although an unorthodox option, seems to provide decent defensive utility of being immune to Draco and resistant to Psychic especially as a scarfer.
Weavile, fierce as ever, threatens Latios out offensively and turns it into momentum while it's also immune to psychic.
Winner(s)
I'd like to start this off with thanking everyone for participating, the submissions were good and I didn't expect this lil project to get much as much activity as it did. And I'd also like to remind you that the amounts of votes do not reflect proper viability. That being said; Let's look into our winners! Yep, Winners.
A big congrats to all of our winners, gathering 3 votes each! I will proceed to post the next Victim soon. Stay tuned! And thank you for participating.
Our new victim is quite dangerous, please approach with caution....
Known for coming out on top as one of the most dangerous Water-types in the tier, and notoriously destroying offensive teams after a single Dragon dance boost and outclassing Gyarados with the generational buffs. It has made quite the impact on the metagame.
You know 'em! You (may) love 'em! It's the criminially underused Feraligatr!
First, I want to give the credits to Eve that has tested it with success a few weeks ago. Basically, Eve has come to us with this very standard set after the Gengar ban and spoke the truth. This has been the standard set through years for a really simple reason : it is the best set. Pure Water type has always been relevant when speaking of defensive mons especially when the top threats are water themselves.
Milotic is able to switch into Feraligatr with ease even through rocks. Haze stops any attempt of opposing Feraligatr to click DD again and Scald's burn throws it to oblivion unless Healing Wish or Aromatherapy.
+1 252+ Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Crunch vs. 252 HP / 248+ Def Milotic: 175-207 (44.4 - 52.5%) -- 80.9% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Crunch vs. 252 HP / 248+ Def Milotic: 117-139 (29.6 - 35.2%) -- 22.2% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
+1 252+ Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Waterfall vs. 252 HP / 248+ Def Milotic: 131-155 (33.2 - 39.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
In almost every scenario (the one that doesn't is max roll crit with +1 crunch), Milotic is able to click Haze then Recover. If Milotic is statused, Feraligatr can try to PP stall the 48 Haze avalaible. Wish Gatr some luck, it will need it.
Nothing flashy, nothing new, just simple and clean.
Big growth is here as your safe and sound blanket check for the most prominent physical threats in the tier. In this case, Tangrowth acts as a solid check for DD Feraligatr taking a +1 Ice Punch and healing while hitting with Giga Drain to retaliate, or put Feraligatr to sleep and stop a potential sweep. It can also gain HP back by switching thanks to Regenerator.
On the other hand, Leaf Storm can ensure a oneshot on him at the cost of no healing.
252+ Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Ice Punch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Tangrowth: 161-192 (39.8 - 47.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+1 252+ Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Ice Punch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Tangrowth: 244-289 (60.3 - 71.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 SpA Tangrowth Giga Drain vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Feraligatr: 204-242 (65.3 - 77.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 SpA Tangrowth Leaf Storm vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Feraligatr: 356-420 (114.1 - 134.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Crawdaunt @ Choice Band
Ability: Adaptability
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Crabhammer
- Knock Off
- Aqua Jet
- Crunch
Crawdaunt has gained a lot of prominence and in this meta it is both useful and dangerous. Good offensive double-type with a great ability in Adaptability boosting its double stab. This time, he holds up well to Waterfall and Feraligatr's coverage finishing off with Knock Off. Jolly:
252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Waterfall vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Crawdaunt: 109-129 (40.8 - 48.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO Adamant:
252+ Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Waterfall vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Crawdaunt: 120-140 (44.9 - 52.4%) -- 23% chance to 2HKO Knock Off:
252+ Atk Choice Band Adaptability Crawdaunt Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Feraligatr: 328-386 (105.4 - 124.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Edit; This is a game, but I don't know if a lucky strike with Waterfall + Adamant is taken into account since there may be a percentage of killing Crawdaunt in the next turn.
Poliwrath @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / / 252 Def / 4 Spe
Relaxed Nature
- Scald
- Circle Throw
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
the wrath completely negates everything gatr tries to do. it's immune to waterfall and takes zero from ice punch or crunch. you toss it out right back where it came from.
Feraligatr Waterfall vs. Water Absorb Poliwrath: 0-0 (0 - 0%) -- possibly the worst move ever
+1 252+ Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Ice Punch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Poliwrath: 73-86 (19 - 22.3%) -- possible 6HKO after Leftovers recovery
4 SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Blizzard vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Poliwrath: 60-71 (15.6 - 18.4%) -- possible 8HKO after Leftovers recovery
+1 252+ Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Crunch vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Poliwrath: 77-91 (20 - 23.6%) -- 13.3% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock, 3 layers of Spikes, toxic damage, Steelsurge, and Volcalith damage
there aren't that many hard counters to anything in mons. poliwrath is a hard counter to feraligatr.
this set fits perfectly on defensive teams that don't mind having it rest and sleep talk over and over, like this one. it's not just a specialized gatr counter- actually, if you're using this, you probably wanted to have a crawdaunt counter, so your tangrowth doesn't get crunch dropped and then sludge bomb poisoned and ice beam frozen
and it fucks over weavile too!
without poliwrath, passive teams struggle immensely against gatr- a mon can have good matchups into offense and defense, how about that! seriously, play around in the calc to see just how much havoc gatr can wreak onto fats!! skarm takes a shitton of damage, clefable is easily pressured, tangrowth is shaky, milotic... well, milotic is okay.
but poliwrath? poliwrath is a dam, an immovable floodgate built to stop its ferocious waters. try to break it, and you will meet steel wrath!
replacing scald with bulk up is technically viable if you really want it to act as a win condition (incidentally, it's more viable than it was before the gengar ban). generally, this is less useful than just spreading burns.
playing through the bdsp metagame, wrath is the mon i least expected to fit perfectly on half of my teams. stall appreciates having it so much- and if it was more popular, gatr would be much more constrained.
It do be fast
It do be fast enough that it rkills any Feraligatr variant, deals with every water breaker of the tier, almost soloes stall (or doesn't if you want to run WoW for some reason), and it do be fast
Rotom forms are easily the best thing about this meta, really, and this has an obvious advantage over Wash seeing that it's not forced to click Volt or WoW on Feraligatr to stop it, it directly threatens the KO
It was even better in Manaphy meta but it's still VERY good for the current meta trends, being a good Rotom form and all
Azumarill @ Choice Band
Ability: Huge Power
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Play Rough
- Aqua Jet
- Waterfall
- Superpower
Azu is a check to Feraligatr . It is not 2HKOd by adamant waterfall and 2HKOs in return with play rough.
252+ Atk Choice Band Huge Power Azumarill Play Rough vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Feraligatr: 268-316 (85.8 - 101.2%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
252+ Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Waterfall vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Azumarill: 126-148 (36.9 - 43.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
The set shown above checks Feraligatr amazingly with eating up a +1 Life Orb boosted Crunch, and OHKOs it back with tbolt. This set also checks Garchomp with Will-o-Wisp + Hydro Pump taking care of it, and Rotom-W being physically bulky is just amazing in general eating up lots of hits it normally wouldn't if it were scarfed. I think the rest of the set explains itself. Calcs: +1 252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Crunch vs. 60 HP / 252 Def Rotom-Wash: 144-170 (56.2 - 66.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery, 196+ SpA Rotom-Wash Thunderbolt vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Feraligatr: 312-368 (100 - 117.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO.
Quagsire is a very versitile defensive pokemon. It is one of the only noteably bulky pokemon that still has toxic. Quagsire easily swaps into Feraligatr, as it has immidiete recovery, and is 3HKO'd by Feraligatrs stab waterfall. On top of these traits, it also packs scald, which can easily shut down any physical attacker via the attack halving of burn. But Quagsire is even more versitile than that. It can run sludge bomb for other walls like Tangrowth and Clefable, or be an effective user of yawn. It can even play a more supportive role thanks to haze and encore, letting it's teammates not have to worry about setup sweepers.
252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Waterfall vs. 252 HP / 248+ Def Quagsire: 153-181 (38.8 - 45.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Thanks to Pokémon day delivering us Shaymin, I think a scarf set is a viable revenge killer for Feraligatr and can also provide the team with healing wish and a Breloom and Tangrowth check. Dazzling gleam could be coverage to revenge a chipped Latios and hit dragons but I don't know much else from there.
252 SpA Shaymin Leaf Storm vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Feraligatr: 414-488 (132.6 - 156.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Shaymin Giga Drain vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Feraligatr: 240-284 (76.9 - 91%) -- 25% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
+1 252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Waterfall vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Shaymin: 143-168 (41.8 - 49.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO (if you can read a waterfall that can be perfect.)
Scarf Roserade is a great check to Feraligatr, as it outspeeds Feraligatr and OHKOs it with Energy Ball / Leaf Storm. It can also survive unboosted Waterfall/Crunch or +1 Waterfall, so it can switch in if you predict your opponent correctly, provided Roserade has enough health.
Leaf Storm's sheer power makes it great for revenge killing / chipping bulkier Pokémon. Sludge Bomb's 30% poison chance is very threating for walls to switch into. Shadow Ball allows Roserade to hit Steel- and Poison-types without having its SpA lowered, and Dazzling Gleam gives Roserade extra power against Fighting-, Dark- and Dragon-types. Energy Ball is a great alternative to Leaf Storm in situations where Roserade might be able to stay in after firing off a Grass-type move.
252 SpA Roserade Energy Ball vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Feraligatr: 336-396 (108 - 127.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 SpA Roserade Leaf Storm vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Feraligatr: 482-570 (154.9 - 183.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Crunch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Roserade: 198-233 (75.8 - 89.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+1 252+ Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Waterfall vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Roserade: 220-260 (84.2 - 99.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Mantine @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Scald
- Roost
- Air Slash
- Haze
Mantine is a decent check to Feraligatr. It can handle any unboosted hit from it and even at +1, it’s only a very small roll to 2HKO. As a bonus, it doesn’t just resist Feraligatr’s STAB, it’s completely immune to it, taking (0% - 0%) damage. It can also threaten to ruin its sweep with Scald. Having access to reliable recovery is also massive, letting it have longevity for other threats.
252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Crunch vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Mantine: 116-136 (31 - 36.4%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Crunch vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Mantine: 126-149 (33.7 - 39.9%) -- 32.4% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
+1 252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Crunch vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Mantine: 172-203 (46.1 - 54.4%) -- 5.9% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
+1 252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Feraligatr Ice Punch vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Mantine: 161-191 (43.1 - 51.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

We've got ourselves a wide variety of Pokemon to choose from! Who's your favorite? Let us know:
You may vote up to two Pokémon, although not necessary, it'd also be nice if you were to provide an explanation on why.
The voting phase, as usual, will last for 2 days (Ending on Monday).
Remember to abide by the rules while posting, Vote away quickly! This Feraligatr is setting up on me...
telling you about the hidden Ice Beam / Blizzard tech so Tangrowth gets smacked...
That aside I'm voting and
Milotic underrated, more at 11
Tang gets demolished by the Ice Beam variant YALL SHOULD RUN AND HAVE NO REASON NOT TO
Jokes aside, susceptible to eventual punching, especially since you don't KO back (although you usually win the trade just by switching and existing), very solid otherwise and would vote it with Milotic if I could but I slightly prefer Milotic
Daunt is a strong check but also a frail check, it wont happen again
WRATH legit underrated, takes literally nothing from a lot of meta staples rn
Azu same as Daunt basically but Azu has more defensive value in typing and stats
I wouldnt ever use that Washtom set and for the sake of Fera specifically just use Mower or use it Scarf Wisp or smth
Quag good but its susceptible to STAB critting
I'm not voting for either of the two inferior grasses; Shaymin is definitely usable, but it accomplishes more by being defensive overall, and risking Seed Flare is shakier than throwing a Leaf Storm, while Roserade is just bad at every possible purpose except spiking your opponent and quite honestly should fall off if you ask me; as a bonus, of all three grasses involved, Shaymin is the only one that actually eats every Ice move Feraligatr could run even if you mispredict the switch in a pinch.
Can we let Mantine fall down to lowtiers it should be time
Lalaya Ice Beam/Blizzard isnt listed on the votw set so Tangrowth does work for checking this Feraligatr set. Like your heatran wouldnt work on specs Latios for example cuz it runs Surf. But that wasnt the set. ^^
