battle etiquette

being new to competitive battling, I'm not sure on this. But in any competition I've ever been involved in, quitting halfway when you think/know you can't win, and thus depriving the other person of the win on merit and leaving them with a hollow default victory, is unsportsmanlike. If you're playing football and losing 6-0, you don't just walk off the pitch, you play it out until the end. If you're playing snooker and are 10 frames down, one away from losing, you don't quit. If you're playing any sport and an unfair refereeing decision happens or some freak of nature screws up your game, you don't leave- you carry on.

So why is it as soon as a poke sets up with DD/SD or whatever and sweeps a couple of pokes, or a bit of hax occurs and you lose a poke when you shouldn't, or you're just plain losing- people leave the battle? And more to the point, expect you to do the same sometimes?

I was battling someone, and all I had left (if I remember) was a bronzong with psychic as his only attacking move. They switched to a dark- obviously, I now can't hurt them.

They now said 'why don't you leave, you can't win.'

I said no, finish him off- I'm not leaving until I've lost. He then accused me of stalling, or whatever, and complained to admin.

Now unless I'm mistaken, the match isn't over until 6 pokes have fainted, correct? Why are there so many people that play and leave as soon as it's clear the battle's not going their way? Am I the only one who thinks this is quite bad sportsmanship, or do others get annoyed by it?

I'm kinda new to this too. My oppinion is, if there really is no way to win, you should be allowed to "give in". In my experiance on Pokemon Battle Revolution Wifi, if I KNOW I've lost for sure, there's no reason to continue. Personally, when I see the "Opponent has given up" message, I feel even better than had I just finished them off.

I've destroyed hundreds of teams in-game and many in the competitive circles, only human opponents have the sense to realize they can't win. Computers don't give up. You just feel more skillful. >.>

I once had a situation when I was battling against 5+ Attack and Def -5 Speed Curselax. Everybody would think I've lost... but my Donphan used counter while it returned it. Donphan survived... Snorlax didn't. I won that match, although my pokemon have been frozen three times, and I was very often hax'd.

On Shoddy, whenever I know I've lost for sure, I tell the opponent "I got nothing left". I then ask if it is fine to leave. When I'm doing stuff like roosting Gliscor, and then switching to Blissey whenever he switches to a special sweeper, and can only softboil / roost every turn... I know I lost, but the match will take an hour.

If its like a Bellyzard sweep, I just let them kill me. As long as it is going to not waste the next hour of my life, I'll fight to the end.

I have no problem with people leaving when a situation is clearly one-sided, such as with a full health 6-DDed offensive Gyarados against some team; in fact, I don't really have a problem with people leaving in general, because it only saves me time for another battle, and leaving is a decision that doesn't do anything particularly negative to me.

If there's a match I feel I cant win. I'm not going to waste my time. You get the victory and I can move on to a different fight.

What is it about the gratification of killing other peoples pokemon? I don't get it.

I for one love killing every single one of an opponent's pokemon with a reversal sweep. Quite literally, it reverses the game.

The sports you're talking about are public competitions with lots of people involved, so you fight to the end because it's an event. I think usually in video game tournaments with a lot of spectators people do the same. When you're just messing around on shoddy, it's often convenient to simply quit when you know you've lost because you don't want to waste time going through the motions.

Sounds like the person you were playing was a douchebag though. "You should just quit because you've lost" is always an arrogant and obnoxious thing to say, whether it's true or not.

I really don't quit even when it's inediable that I'll lose. For instance I screwed up and let a BellyZard get set up, but I didn't quit and I killed it.

but seriously I hate it when people quit when it looks that i'm going to eat them. For instance, I was in the shoddy tournament, and I ended up withing the first 10 turns getting about 7 or 8 different types of hax, and my opponet managed to comeback and well....beat me

People can quit if they want to, or stay, doesn't really matter to me. More importantly I think is saying "gg" at least after you win. You come off as a douchebag if you aren't going to at least acknowledge your opponent as a battler. Regardless of whether it was a good match or not it's just good manners to say it.

I'm sorry but I reserve "gg" for the people I actually think have battled well or done something worthy of respect ...

Quite frankly I'll be damned if I acknowledge someone who spends the entire battle complaining about hax, or who stalls for fifteen or so minutes with their last pokemon. If that makes me a douchbag fine, I'd rather be that than insincere and hypocritical.

I always say gg except when my opponent has been an incredible asshole during the game, in which case I'd usually yell at/ban them on NetBattle. But I can't do that on Shoddy.

I leave when I'm in a pissy mood and don't feel like completing the game, but usually, if someone sweeps me they deserve it, so I just let them finish me.

I don't care about sportsmanship. If the person gave me a good battle and used some strategy in the process, they get a gg, assuming they weren't being a douche. Nevertheless, if the person just fucked around, I'll probably disconnect when I don't want to put up with the shit anymore.

There isn't really any etiquette I follow when on the internet in general, except type semi-readably and don't make up shit and say it's true. I basically only show respect to whoever I want to show respect to.

I agree.

Most of the time, I allow people to sweep me, and I lose. Why? Because I have respect for the other person enough so that they can destroy my team. Losing makes winning better. Remember that.

If I am iplaying on Shoddy and I am in a stall, but I know i will lose, I tell my opponent I give up, tell them gg, and unless they say otherwise, i leave after their gg.

I think disconnecting/leaving is fine, but you should resign before you do. "I got nothing left," or "You got me," or "I've lost." I usually say, "I resign." If the opponent admits defeat, no reason disconnecting is bad sportsmanship imo.

Unles he's like, "F@cking hacker, *disconnect*" well, that's different.

I prefer battles that are played out to the end, whichever side of the sweep I'm on. I remember being a Magmortar away from finishing a late-game sweep with a Rock Polish Golem, and the guy refused to make a move. Booo.

There is a case for a forfeit, but a lot of the time, I don't mind giving (or receiving) the satisfaction of a well-played sweep.

I'm a big fan of the "gg," though, rarely (like in the case of my Golem sweep) do I leave without saying "gg." It's just good manners.

I'll stick it out to the end. I won't stall for no reason, if i cant win i make sure the end is quick and decisive in the op case i'd have just psychic'd away until the bronzong fell, said gg and went on my merry way.

If I wanna leave regardless of the result or the situation, I'll leave, who gives a shit? Are you from now on not going to ladder battle me by not pressing the "Find Match" button until I'm in a battle? Are you going to go tell your friends that I'm a bad sport?

I quit battles when I know I can't win, and don't mind people doing it to me either. I think what's important is at least saying something, maybe "gg, u win", not just leaving randomly. I play for the tactical fun, not for watching all my opponent's pokemon drop to 0%.

If I let my opponent get setup, it's my own mistake, so I let them tear me a new one. Also, sometimes you're not quite as screwed as you might think you are, so you may learn that your tyranitar can survive a surf from a rain danced kingdra or w/e (just an example).

I only ever quit when I'm in a well and truly hopeless or time wasting situation, and that means being left with stallers with a major type disadvantage.
Of course, I'll admit I give in then, as one should.

But if there's a chance to fight back, it's a very interesting end or I'm getting swept, I'll stay in. I've made massive comebacks with a Skarmory before. xD

Also, gg is very much a must.

i agree with you 100% on this. when i know i'm gonna lose i fight 'till its over. i think that maybe a few people i have ran when they knew that they were going to lose. but anyways, most people are have good sportsmanship.

I'm OK if someone quits during a stallfest or at least gives me warning that their going to quit.

Some people, on the other hand, quits when their Infernape gets OHKO'ed by a Scarfed Zard's Air Slash in the first turn with of the match with no warning pisses me off so much.
