Metagame Bad 'n Boosted (Espeon banned)

i wanted to post the analyses as a bunch but i've only really had time to work on the araq one so here it is

Araquanid @ Choice Band
Ability: Water Bubble
Tera Type: Water
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Liquidation
- Leech Life / Lunge / Skitter Smack
- Trailblaze / Poison Jab / Body Slam
- Sticky Web / Reflect / Endeavor

With a sky high Attack stat, high-Base Power moves, and a fantastic ability in Water Bubble, Araquanid functions as an excellent wallbreaker with the capability to heavily damage its foes while forcing switches. Water Bubble-boosted Liquidation hits most of the metagame hard, scoring OHKOs on the likes of Vibrava as well as 2HKOs on Pokemon like Skarmory and Koraidon outside of sun. Tera Water further compounds its damage output, allowing it to 2HKO even bulky Water-resistant Pokemon such as Toxapex and Alomomola. Bug-type STAB moves allow Araquanid to handle the Grass-types that hope to switch into Liquidation. Leech Life provides Araquanid with recovery, something it crucially requires as it is vulnerable to chip damage from entry hazards and poison. Lunge and Skitter Smack are alternative options that reduce the offensive capability of opposing physical and special attackers respectively. The final two moveslots can be customized to fit Araquanid’s needs. Trailblaze allows Araquanid to catch Water-immune Pokemon like Gastrodon or Quagsire on the switch and boost its own Speed, while Poison Jab allows Araquanid to further nail Fairy-types and spread poison. Body Slam is a decent option for coverage, and it also allows Araquanid to further cripple its foes by paralyzing them. Araquanid can take advantage of the switches it forces to run Sticky Web to slow its foes down or Reflect to further weaken any incoming physical Attacks. Finally, Endeavor is an option that Araquanid can utilise when it is low on health to further weaken its foes, allowing its teammates to finish them off.

Physical attackers such as Vibrava and Zacian synergize well with Araquanid, as they can work together to overwhelm shared checks in physically defensive Pokemon, such as the aforementioned Toxapex and Alomomola. Araquanid also heavily appreciates rain setters such as Pelipper, which can clear Koraidon’s sun and replace it with rain to further boost Araquanid’s Liquidation. Choice Band Araquanid is especially vulnerable to entry hazards due to it having to forgo Heavy-Duty Boots; for this reason, hazard removal options such as Great Tusk and Galarian Weezing are excellent teammates for it. Finally, Alomomola can keep Araquanid healthy by Wish passing to it.

Castform, unfortunately, is not a legal pokemon in the standard format, but it IS available in the NatDex format of the mod which is largely underexplored as of now.

I guess it's only good that the most obvious things have been thought of!

No one seems to have mentioned Flutter Mane. Its base speed is lower than the fastest boosted mons, but with Protosynthesis it can outspeed everything just as well as in regular gameplay. Surely it benefits from the extra bulk?

Oh, definitely! In-thread discussion (as of now) isn't the full picture of how the metagame looks at the moment. Flutter Mane is very good, and the more popular set is Calm Mind with Taunt or Substitute & Dual STAB. Specs also sees some use.

Edit: If you are on Discord, I would highly encourage you to join the BnB server. That is where most of the metagame discussion takes place.

I am personally against an Araquanid ban. While I initially thought Araquanid was extremely broken, due to its incredibly high damage output, I have since decided that Araquanid is an important part of the tier and healthy for the metagame. Bad 'n Boosted as a concept causes defensive strength to increase significantly compared to offensive strength, which has led to a very stall-heavy metagame. A lot of these stall Pokemon, such as Breloom, Brambleghast, and Mienshao, have very high defensive stats that make them extremely difficult to take down. Additionally, a lot of stall staples in the normal metagame, such as Dondozo, Toxapex, and Blissey, also have significantly higher bulk. Furthermore, hazard removal is very difficult to come across, with a distinct lack of offensive hazard removal outside of Excadrill and Great Tusk. On the other hand, there are a vast quantity of defensive hazard removal, such as Brambleghast, Komala, Quaxwell, and the now banned Cyclizar. All this makes stall counterplay very difficult for offensive teams, and encourages building around defensive mons. Araquanid is by far the most powerful attacker in the tier, with it's rediculous base 140 Atk Water Bubble boosted Liquidation. This gives it amazing stallbreaker potential, with raw power unmatched by anything in the tier. However, it has very definite counterplay, and Araquanid's one-dimensional nature means it's very predictable. These weaknesses mean that while it is very strong, I do not believe it is broken and I think it is actually beneficial for the tier. A very mediocre speed tier of 84 means it is outsped by the vast majority of the metagame without a Scarf. All of Araquanid's power comes from its Water-type attacks, meaning it can be walled by most Water Absorb Pokemon, which there are several options for both offensively and defensively. Additionally, Araquanid still relies heavily on Rain, Tera Water, a Choice Band, or a combination of those to effectively beat many Water resists. Finally, Araquanid struggles significantly against the best Pokemon in the tier, Koraidon. All in all, I believe that Araquanid is a healthy part of the tier, being a crucial stallbreaker for offensive teams while having multiple weaknesses that give a good level of counterplay. While it does inflict significant restrictions on the teambuilder for stall teams, this is also true for every stallbreaker ever, and more balanced or offensive teams have plenty of counterplay by exploiting Araquanid's low speed and Bug typing.

now if your thinking this looks nutty your right it does look nutty because it’s a 100/152/142 defensive spread paired with 126 attack and 106 spatk. although it does look nutty i’m still for a dnb mainly because it doesn’t outright win games. it doesn’t tend to use its high 126 attack either because of rocky helmet or flame body chip. i am mainly putting this here as a benchmark on what stupid mons there are

^this is a joke but it’s not far from the truth it probably runs like webs and bug stab and a random 4th
remember that toxapex i was talking about with the nutty stat spread. well what if we could just 2hko it. surely that isn’t possible right
252+ Atk Water Bubble Tera Water Araquanid Liquidation vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Toxapex in Rain: 173-204 (42.8 - 50.4%) -- 1.2% chance to 2HKO

i know it’s not a perfect 100% but the moment this thing switches in from full and gets a defense drop it’s game. not to mention other ways of chipping pex like hazards burn knocking leftovers/hdb future sight and so on. also this is a RESISTED ATTACK on a MAX MAX 100/152 DEFENSIVE SPREAD. ykw close enough welcome back :dracovish:

Ive been on the fence about writing about koraidon but its so controversial that I feel like if I did a yap post I couldn't leave it out. Koraidon has various different sets and roles it can fill on a team. it can be scarf 4a with u-turn, it can be heat rock with u-turn to set up sun for its teammates like bellsprout, or it can be sd scale shot like the set above. +2 koraidon looks very powerful atm mainly because scale shot does 59-70 on 5 hits against toxapex, which no it doesn't kill or anything but it still is a lot of damage for a mon that's so hated. it also has a very good stab combo into the high meta like flare blitz for skarmory and tera flare blitz just killing max max pawmot after rocks? (that's a 140/140 mon.) Alongside scale shot doing good damage or just killing the aforementioned toxapex, Ho-oh,
Terastalization
tera is nutorious for bringing mons to the next level by the sheer power of tera and how stupid it is. it supports far sided playstyles like stall and hyper offense the most and leaves balance and bulky teams to rot. it isn’t a healthy mechanic and it shows in here by making the broken more broken

Sleep
there are things like 140 speed breloom in the tier there’s no question about this one. the big factor is weather to ban spore or sleep entirely and banning spore seems pointless when sleep is still controversial. i shouldn’t have to name and list off all the sleep abusers and how sleep is the easiest button to click and get immediate value from it this should all be common knowledge by this point.

These Are the Ground types of the tier. what a spread of mons. Vibrava is the best imo because of u-turn but they all have their niches like clods mu into araquanid arceus having a deep movepool good stats and recovery and marshtomp having 140/140/140 and 120 spatk. they all feel very strong and useful to use and are all healthy centerpieces to a meta.

I wanted to put blursa in a different discussion because its not like the others imo. Instead it has 135 special attack a strong 140 bp move scrappy and can click calm mind very easily. it feels like a mon that is very easy to get benefit from and has potential to be broken. it is flawed tho with its low 104 speed. but this mon does have a tendency to rip stall apart especially with mixed options that run fighting move to nuke through blissey. one problem is that is blanks pretty hard into skarmory apart from nuking it with tera boosted blood moons (+2 will 2hko and +3 will do 70)

I've been saying offense looks good in this meta but look at these 2. Blissey isn't boosted too much but if you want you can throw more evs into spdef. Dondozo got a massive buff tho with its now 150/115/130 defensive spread. Luckily he doesn't get scald, actually he doesn't get any notable special attacking moves so that mosterous 130 spatk doesn't mean anything. its the fact that its this bulky that makes it annoying. i can see dondozo being problematic in the future.

This is literally clefable on crack. it has so much tech that you can’t look at this and think it’s bad. especially with these stats. it’s always gonna run moonlight and moonblast and the options outside of that is nutty. It can run regular defensive utility with rocks twave and leftovers or rocky helmet or really anything you want, it can run tricky barb with a seperate 4th to ware down walls easily, it can run calm mind with flamethrower, it can drop moonlight and run wish or it can drop twave or rocks and run knock or whatever you need it to do for your team it probably can as long as it’s not hazard removal.

Interestingly, arena trap is not banned at the moment of typing so dugtrio can do its thing. A side note is that its attack and special attack is the same meaning it is more unpredictable and is easier to trap physical walls like toxapex (this will kill btw). memento can be changed to final gambit but I don't see it being that useful

Ive been typing for literal hours on days, I did not expect to do that. ok bye

Hot take but Waterfall might be a better option for Scarf Araquanid. The damage is slightly lower but the chance to Flinch is huge. I won a game that I probably should have lost because my Waterfall flinched three times, allowing me to get a kill on something that otherwise would have walled me.

Also want to post one of my favourite guys who has proven to be very solid.

130 Special Attack and 116 Speed are nothing to scoff at for a SFLO set. Breaks through a number of slower walls, and can outspeed a lot of things on Webs teams. I think this is another really solid offensive Pokemon, despite the fact that it is relying fully on coverage. Maybe mixed with Rock Slide could work, but I think this focus on Special power works best.

Waiter, waiter, more Stored power please.

These two are like Giga underrated, Espeon in particular seeming like one of the most broken mons rn. Mbounce prevents roar/whirlwind, CM+Gigantic Physical bulk makes it really really tough to play around, and let's say you give it leftovers on Grasy Terrain Screens HO. Terrifying mon, I've only seen Myself use it tho.
Magearna on the other hand still uses the same shit as in Regular play, but this time it's much faster, and can win vs Offensive teams by itself (espeon is quasi autowin vs defensive ones)

I feel like this meta is actually in a pretty balanced state right now. It's a little hasty to call anything broken for me. I feel like maybe Shed Tail / Orthworm should be looked at, and everything else feels mostly pretty fine. I think the meta is somewhat underexplored currently. Obviously, it's a very bulky meta, and sometimes stall and hazard stacking feels a little too easy to get away with thanks to unaware mons with huge bulk on both sides, a relative lack of good defoggers, etc. but we'll see.

:araquanid:Araquanid is bulky and really powerful, especially when supported by Pelipper. It pretty much demands a solid water resist for the team. Its main flaw is a really low Speed stat that means that a lot of mons outspeed it even with no investment at all, including some walls that are not 2HKOd by it. Also, a lot of the best spinners have a good matchup against it anyways, meaning it can be hard to keep webs up. I'd say it's a big threat you need to prep for but not broken.

:koraidon:Koraidon is the single best mon in the meta overall, but it has some counterplay. Bulky physical walls like Toxapex, Dondozo, Deoxys-D, Weezing-G can stomach its moves and threaten it back. A number of threats at the 140 speed tier outspeed it before a Scale Shot boost. You can also change its weather with Pelipper who generally has a good matchup into it anyways.

:breloom:Breloom can be quite threatening with its great stats and spore, but it has some pretty notable checks, even ones that are immune to spore. I feel like I don't see it enough to make a strong judgment on it. Sleep as a mechanic is fine, don't feel like there are too many potent abusers of it.

:toxapex:Toxapex is overrated and shouldn't even be on the watchlist imo. While less passive and bulkier than in standard play, it's still pretty easy to switch in onto for most of the defensive metagame. It struggles to make any progress at all against bulky mons immune to poison status and offers less role compression than some other bulky waters. For what it's worth, it's very stable against Koraidon though.

:skarmory:Skarmory is really bulky, and actually really fast for how bulky it is too. It's one of the best leads and defensive mons. Its passive and predictable, but that doesn't really matter if all you have are setup sweepers slower than it. The Taunt set is best, shuts down all setup mons while Whirlwinding the team around. Skarmory sometimes feels insurmountable for HO to deal with. Against teams that don't care about Spikes much, or that can remove hazards easily without being blocked, or that can burn Skarmory easily, it feels like it accomplishes almost nothing.

:dondozo:Dondozo is just super bulky on both sides and sets up so easily. Like Skarmory, it can sometimes feel like an impassable wall for HO to deal with, especially when backed with another Unaware mon, but already we are seeing ways to adapt to it. Unaware can be bypassed by common and good setup sweepers like Necrozma-DM, Lunala, and Zekrom, or it can be beaten down by Stored Power sweepers like Espeon or any number of the other good ones. Even in situations where it does manage to set up fully with Curse, it can struggle to break through some of the common walls teams will be running anyways to deal with Araquanid, like Eternatus, Toxapex, Brambleghast, and others.

Due to my Location I can't access google docs, so I'll js post my thoughts

Araquanid is a skillcheck, I play Thwackey and Grovyle and honestly it's underwhelming + needs a shit ton of boosts to break Magearna. Liquidation is funny button but it relies on the opp not running Koraidon, the best mon.

Koraidon ngl is Strong af. Koraidon will 2HKO everything in this meta despite the buff boosts, and often needs tera to be used to stop it, not a healthy presence overall.

Breloom is probs threateing if you don't use 2 super bulky grasses so I can't have an accurat opinion on this mon.

Toxapex is honestly healthy and a glue mon bc of how many threats there are in this meta.

Skarm is Disruptive af when you dont play Espeon, Very far from unhealthy or Broken tho

Dozo is a bitchlike in standard play, but now that it gets Sp.D it's easier to kill it with Phys attacks.

Frosmoth. Quiver dance with Insane speed, insane Phys bulk, Insane Abil, Access to Tera. I doubt it's as strong as, say, Magearna, but that's still wicked.
Instead of Frosmoth tho, I could see Quiver dnce as a whole being problematic, bc when it won't be Frosmoth then It'll be ribombee, then Venomoth, and It'll go on and on.

I feel like Stored Power is more broken than anything in the survey. Haze is almost unexistent, An every other form of counterplay thuds into Espeon/Magearna. I have great fun using it, and I don't win 100% of the time, but that's not something fun to deal with. much like Baton pass, Stored power mons are uninterractive and uncompetitive. No prediction involved, just calm mind until your stored power Kills Tera Rock Blissey in Sandstorm.

Besides, I feel like Banning Magearna/Epeon doesn't look a solution because
-Other mons like hatterene will do the exact same shit
-Espeon is a cool Hazard Repulsive in Sun tems, future sight spreading, abusing sun itself with 66% Healing Morning sun, Healthy mon at it.
-Magearna is mid af.

Hey, I'm new to this format and it looks pretty cool, I'm mainly a HO/Offense player so I was wondering if it was possible to have good offense team / ressources to build an offense team

Actual Espeon Ban Proposal: It was top 5 in usage week 2 of the tour in all forms of battles. Its a bulky magic bounce user with calm mind and recovery, making it difficult to get off the field. It may just be a noob check, but any mon thats a noob check i would call unhealthy as it discourages new people to play. So i dont care if its not broken and just a noob check. It needs to be banned.

Edit:
"Just Use Tera Dark!"

Espeon used Alluring Voice!
Its super effective!
([Opposing Mon] lost 100% of its health!)
[Opposing Mon] fainted!

:sm/araquanid: is now banned.

This is mostly due to the feedback in the Tiering Survey. I'll post the results here soon, they are currently viewable on Discord. I may suspect Koraidon and Skarmory soon, as they received high scores as well, but not as critically high.

Community Viability Ranking
I'd like to ask Bad 'n Boosted players to fill out the VR Maker and either send them here, or send them to me privately. I will also do so, and then for our VR starting out, we can have it be an average of the opinions of BnB players.

Please put Pokemon in F if you think they should be unranked / they are not viable. Please keep them out of the Viability Ranking if you have no opinion (for example, if you've not seen / used them).
