Assault Vest

I find Assault vest to be very interesting; however, it is highly situational. It is definitely not an item that belongs in most team compositions. I have tested quite a few pokemon in order to get an understanding of its viability.

Here are two builds that have had moderate success:

Kyurem-White @ Assault Vest
Ability: Turboblaze
EVs: 252 SAtk / 252 HP / 4 Def
Modest Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Ice Beam
- Fusion Flare
- Earth Power

Celebi @ Assault Vest
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 SAtk / 4 SDef / 252 HP
Modest Nature
- Leaf Storm
- Psychic
- Earth Power
- Hidden Power [Fire] / Hidden Power [Ice]

Yeah, I know they are strange. I just try whatever I want and go with it. That's the true appeal of Pokemon.

Exactly what is celebi countering that it's a good assault vest user? With AV it can't recover and its special attack is lacking so all out attack is made even worse by no item. I really don't see how it's doing anything significant; think about the advantages of using celebi and how other pokemon are generally better. Water resist? palkia does it better. Groudon check? only defensive groudon and AV doesn't help with that. Leaf storm is probably the best "reason" I can come up with my head to use attacker celebi but AV doesn't help (use specs) and dragons are more prominent than Xerneas. If Draco Meteor isn't that useful, I don't see how this is either.

About Kyurem-White: this pokemon is designed to spam its special attack, which is why specs is a standard item. AV lets it have more switch-in capabilities but I'm not sure what it gains in bulk as a tradeoff. What are you switching it in on and how much less damage is it taking? The HP ev's should really help but I'm still quiet curious.

Slowking@Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP/ 252 SDef / 4 SAtk
Sassy Nature
-Grass Knot
-Dragon Tail
-Foul Play
-Flamethrower/ Scald
Amoonguss v.2.0. Slowking is statistically better in every aspect and can function similar to Amoonguss. Grass Knot is mandatory for hitting Kyogre and Groudon in addition to Rock Arceus. Dragon Tail phaze out Mewtwo and its Mega form and is useful against anything try to set up. Foul Play is preferred next as it can dent Ho-Oh and other high attack targets like Zekrom. For the last slot there are a lot of options. Flamethrower hit steel type, Scald for STAB and burn chance. Other moves such as Focus Blast and Ice beam can also be used depending on your team.

252+ SpA Choice Specs Kyogre Thunder vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Assault Vest Slowking: 198-234 (50.2 - 59.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Kyogre Water Spout (150 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Assault Vest Slowking in Rain: 151-178 (38.3 - 45.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Excadrill@Assault Vest
Ability: Mold Breaker
EVs: 252 SDef/20 Spd (need to creep)/ rest in Hp and Atk
Adamant Nature
-Rapid Spin
-Earthquake
-Iron Head
-Rock Slide

An alternative to get rid of hazard. This is a lot bulkier than its leftovers counter part (even though losing SR sucks) and can Spin easily as long as your opponent doesn't have a ghost.

virizion makes an excellent AV user.

Uhh.... isn't this an UBERS thread? Goodra and virizion aren't viable in Ubers in any way. Sure, Exca is viable, but not with an AV set. AV exca sucks in uber for obv reasons.

Hoe-Oh @ Assault Vest
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP/252 Atk/4 Spd (Run speed creep obviously)
Adamant Nature
- Sacred Fire
- Brave Bird
- Earthquake
- Punishment/Flame Charge/Iron Head

With an Assault Vest and HP investment, Hoe-Oh can switch in on nearly any Special based attack in the game and end up beating that Pokemon. Of course, you can't run this set and expect it to have the same offensive pressure CB or LO Hoe-Oh brings, it is meant for a more defensive team. For the last moveslot, it doesn't really matter. Punishment and Flame Charge are both pretty mediocre and you'll rarely find yourself using them. Iron Head is there for when Diancie is released. Here are some calcs to show the pure bulk that AV Hoe-Oh brings you.

252 SpA Lustrous Orb Palkia Hydro Pump vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Ho-Oh: 218-260 (52.4 - 62.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+2 252+ SpA Xerneas Thunder vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Ho-Oh: 244-288 (58.6 - 69.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Deoxys-A Psycho Boost vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Ho-Oh: 147-174 (35.3 - 41.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
