All Mono-Type Teams Don't Suck (Warstory--Mike Rotch vs. Russs)

I made a Mono-Psychic team today, and I didn't expect to get such a great battle so soon after. I logged onto Shoddy, chose a Ladder battle, and I found Russs. Now, sit back and scroll down...

My (Mike Rotch's) team:

Rules: Ladder Match, Sleep Clause, Freeze Clause, OHKO Clause, Evasion Clause, Species Clause, Strict Damage Clause
Russs sent out Yanmega (lvl 100 Yanmega ?).
Mike Rotch sent out Pixie Dust (lvl 100 Azelf).

Okay, I send out Azelf, Russs sends out Yanmega. As soon as I see it, I think this battle might already be lost.

Yanmega braced itself!
Pixie Dust used Flamethrower.

Yeah, yeah, I'm sure everyone knows what Yanmega's doing.

As I just commented, double Sash. This battle, the Sash didn't really help me.

I try to preserve the 1-HP Azelf, because it could explode on something slower. Of course, because of my team being mono-Psychic, I don't have any resists to Bug.

For the next few turns, I just send out Pokémon, letting Yanmega KO them. I thought I already lost the battle.

Woot! Uxie, being a bulky Pokémon, with 75/130/130 Defenses, iirc, was able to withstand the buzzing noise and KO. Still, I have a long way to go before having even a chance of winning.

Russs sends out Suicune, and we both do some Calm Minding. Due to little or no EV investment in Suicune's SA and CM's Spec. Defense boosts, Uxie's Subs were able to absorb a few Surfs before fading away. You can skip a few turns. It's just Uxie CMing and Suicune hanging 10 surfing. Who knew a dog could actually stand on a Surfboard?

Unfortunately, Suicune has great defenses. Thunderbolt didn't KO, letting it KO my Uxie. The battle looks even worse.

2-4 Russs

The return of the deadly fairy! Azelf, taking revenge on Suicune for it slaughtering Uxie, thows grass at the doggy, and KO's it.

Sceptile used Leech Seed.
Pixie Dust was seeded!
Pixie Dust used Explosion.
A critical hit!
Sceptile lost 100% of its health.
Russs's Sceptile fainted.
Mike Rotch's Pixie Dust fainted.

1-3 Russs

A weird move from Russs, because if it would have used a damaging attack, it would have remained unscathed from the suicide-bombing revenging pixie. Was he predicting a switch to Blissey or something? Anyway, that was great luck for me, but I only have one Pokémon against Russs's three Pokémon. It looks like I'm going to lose right away, right?

I send out a metallic spider, while Russs sends out the Dr. Z. Porygon-Z directs a large thunderbolt at Metagross, while Meta uses Agility. I start to think victory might be possible.

Meteor Mash misses, Russs wins!

Props:

• Russs for a great game.
• Metagross for a great comeback.
• Azelf for taking down two Pogeys despite being at 1 HP.
• Uxie for having great defenses. If it wasn't able to take a Bug Buzz without fainting, the battle would have been done a lot sooner.
• Me, for attaching Leftovers to Metagross. If it weren't for that, Metagross would have been KO'ed by Porygon-Z.
• Me, for using a mono-type team.

Slops:

• Medicham, Bronzong, and Starmie for not doing anything.
• Meteor Mash for missing at a crucial part of the game.
• Having to face off against a Bug Buzz Yanmega.

This is my first warstory, so please correct me if I'm doing something wrong. Questions? Comments?

Wow, what a close match. I always seem to make comebacks and get stopped by their last poke (usually blissey) too. Good match.

Also, neat idea having CM Uxie. I never realised it was THAT tough. I have Yawn, SR, Extrasensory and U-Turn. I never thought of CM sweeping. Very interesting idea >: )

You would have had an extra Medicham and Starmie had you just sent out Uxie to begin with after Bronzong died. Or hell you could have just let it kill Azelf, and save yourself that Bronzong too, and leaving you with basically a full healthy team.

I didn't realize that Uxie woule be able to take a Bug Buzz without dying; I thought that Bronzong was the best switch. (And Azelf does more than Bronzong, so I would rather sacrifice Bronzong than Azelf.

mono teams are so difficult to master...when I ran that dark team, people would stack up the bug/fighting types and that would do me in every time. Good job winning despite screwing up so bad at the start. You really need to get a priority move on your team, like bullet punch on gross, just for smartasses like that yanmega.

Heh, that was an interesting match. Not great, but was still worth reading...proves how much of a bitch Yanmega is to counter when you don't have Blissey too. Damn, I hate that thing.

Even if you had hit with Metagross, there was no way in the world that you could have won that battle if the Blissey was the standard max Defense version, because Blissey can survive an unboosted Meteor Mash, even if it was a critical hit. (on second thought there might have been a slight chance of you winning but as far as I remember Metagross Meteor Mash only does ~48% on Blissey)

You're correct, Meteor Mash 'Gross w/o Choice Band (max Atk) does 47% to 55% to Max HP/Def Blissey, and with 148 HP and 252 Def it's 49% to 58%.

Pretty good battle overall, but Uxie definately should have come in a bit earlier instead of trashing Cham.

Great match, I hate when they come down to some inaccurate move missing. I had one (sorta) like that today, with Bronzong on Bronzong. Needless to day, it was a draw.

Pretty good read, although it was painful to see a portion of your team die to Yanmega.

The whole battle was just two waves. He kills half your team, you kill half his, he kills the half remaining of yours, you kill the rest of his.
Far too quick a battle and it was bad to off your team to that Yanmega without even knowing Uxie's amazing defenses.

Mono type teams are interesting to play, hard to make up for weaks though. Yanmega is mean, but Bronzong might have been able to kill it had it not gotten a crit.

I don't know if this is true or not (as I've never tested it), but I've heard, more than once, that Sound Proof Mr. Mime prevents Yanmega from performing the move Bug Buzz.

If that is indeed the case, and you still use a mono psychic team, I suggest you check it out. Just an idea.

If that is indeed the case, and you still use a mono psychic team, I suggest you check it out. Just an idea.

The Pokemon with Soundproof is unaffected by any of the following moves: Bug Buzz, Chatter, Growl, GrassWhistle, Heal Bell, Hyper Voice, Metal Sound, Perish Song, Roar, Screech, Sing, Supersonic, and Uproar.

It may not work on Shoddy though.

Nice to see a mono team warstory. I myself use a water team on Shoddy which wins more than it loses. Good warstory.
