Half its price is $0.50, so it costs 1 + 0.50 = 1.50. However now its price is 1.50, so half its price is 0.75. So now it costs 1+0.75=1.75. However now its price is 1.75.

The book costs infinite money.
You’re so close to getting it it’s funny. If you continued this process infinitely it would in fact approach $2, not infinity.

I'm starting to think it's actually 2 now.....
if you're spending an entire university lecture trying to solve x = 1 + x/2 then i think you gotta stop worring about if cost = price and start worrying about if tuition fees = course value, you're getting scammed brother.
Not exactly, this problem is presented in a logic class for a reason; it's supposed to be a matter of interpretation and we all interpret things differently.

Agreed that in a real-life scenario it depends on how things are being defined. All of $1, $1.50 and $2 spring out as reasonable responses - which I'm sure is part of the reason this was brought up in your logic class. It makes sense to describe this problem as one that depends on particular assumptions, and isn't defined by a single right or wrong answ-

So far the majority of you are answering it wrong.

oh.

(OP - hazarding a guess but saying one answer is right or wrong is probably not the point of your class)

CONFIDENTIAL. DO NOT RELEASE

ideas:
  • reference monty hall problem or other math paradox can't make it work without sounding forced
  • reference man vs bear in the woods same as above plus perhaps distasteful
  • overly complicated math you haven't studied math in roughly 4 years you couldn't even convincingly fake it
  • "maybe the real cost was the friends we made along the way" old and overdone
  • dirty pun with "math debate"
  • repost that 1 Tony zaret viral math puzzle parody like 2 ppl on here are smart enough to appreciate the genius of Tony zaret
WORKING DRAFT

I'm so glad this thread exists i love arguing about math. math debating feels so good
