7-star Tera Ground Torterra raid event (Nov 15-17, 22-24)

View attachment 688549

Well that's a nice collection now. Wish they would run gen 9 starters just so I could have a full box :(
(yes yes i know i have some mons on wrong "gen" row, I need to sort them correctly some day and I always forget xD)
I’m so sad I have one missing: the Eevee raid. My mother in law was gravely ill at the time and I simply couldn’t get to the switch over the times it ran. I have caught all others so it’ll sit there as a bit of a gap for all time.

As we go into the break between the first run of Torterra and the second run next weekend, I want to give some more love to the Brute Bonnet set posted by Arcticblast earlier, because it has been the all-star of this raid for me so far. It solos much faster than Orthworm and arguably with less risk, if played correctly. And when it comes to random online play, Brute Bonnet is really the ONLY option that truly increases the win rate with teammates of almost anything not named Orthworm.

In online play, there are not many options that are serviceable, and Orthworm is really the only thing you can count on not dying in the hands of the average online noob. But with Brute Bonnet in the mix, it expands the common playable noobmons to Serperior, Arboliva, and Decidueye. All of these are popular choices for many randos, even though they die all the time and lose the raid if Brute isn’t there to save their ass with Clear Smog.

The simple fact is that Torterra Shell Smashing twice and accumulating a total of +12 in meaningful boosts is just too much for anything but Brute Bonnet’s Clear Smog to handle. Decidueye can usually be counted on to throw out a Haze at the start, but that screws many Orthworms that like to lead with Iron Defense. And Haze screws everybody if used after the second Shell Smash, because everybody is boosted in one way or another at that point. So if you are running Decidueye you neuter the entire team, or you leave everyone to find out first hand that they can’t actually handle a +2/+2 Torterra that is faster than everything on the field. No thanks. OR, you can run Brute Bonnet and do a Clear Smog that leaves everyone blissfully unaware of how incompetent their lovingly trained grassmons are, and you all win the raid and collect the loot. Yes, I’ll take door number two, thank you very much.

I can’t overstate the importance of Brute Bonnet’s Clear Smog. Although there are many other mons with Clear Smog, everything else gets obliterated by Torterra’s Ground/Grass/Rock coverage. And if you don’t do Clear Smog, every other debuff move is just not enough to deal with two Shell Smashes, because it double boosts Attack, Special Attack and Speed. With other mons, for example, you can lead off with Charm to neutralize EQ, but still have to eat +2 Earth Power. And after the second Shell Smash, you’re screwed because you can’t Charm through the shield. You can Breaking Swipe if you want, but you’ll quickly discover that it’s just not enough, unless you have multiple coordinated teammates doing it in unison. And even then, you still have to deal with the aforementioned boosted Earth Power. And on top of all that, you have to deal with the fact that without Clear Smog, everybody has to be slower than Torterra for the entire battle, which just isn’t tenable for anything except Orthworm. I’ve tried the rest, and now I go with the best — Brute Bonnet with Clear Smog for the win.

For those of you that haven’t seen it, here’s the all-star Brute Bonnet set that works in all situations (again credit to Arcticblast for originally posting). I’ll give a detailed playbook, with hopes this gains some more popularity with others in raids on the second go-round.

:sv/brute_bonnet:
Brute Bonnet @ Clear Amulet / Metronome
Tera Type: Grass
Ability: Protosynthesis
Modest Nature
EVs: 252 Def / 252 SpAtk
- Giga Drain
- Clear Smog
- Sunny Day
- Growth

Lead off with Clear Smog in all solos, and most randoms. In online play with Decidueye, Haunter, or other Brute Bonnets, you may want to wait a few seconds before moving and see if they do a Clear Smog or Haze themselves. Otherwise, just Clear Smog to guarantee that first Shell Smash is eliminated and you are well on your way to victory.

After the Clear Smog (by you or someone else) the next thing is to set Sunny Day. Sunny Day will proc your Protosynthesis to boost your Defense, because that is your highest stat at this point in the battle (more on this later). The Defense boost helps you deal with the Earthquakes you will likely receive at this stage. And because you are now faster than Brave unboosted Torterra, you get the defense boost before you take the second EQ hit. Niiiice. Many common online teammates will also set Sunny Day (lots of Arbolivas do it turn 1), so they might save you the trouble at the start.

After your Defense is boosted, Torterra will probably move to using Earth Power against you. That’s why I prefer to run Clear Amulet as my hold item, because it eliminates the possibility of getting Special Defense drops, which can ruin you quickly if you get unlucky. Others like to run Metronome to make the endgame faster and are willing to risk it against the SpDef drops.

After Torterra’s boosts are eliminated and sun is up (sometimes both are done by others before your first move), go straight to Giga Drain to build tera and restore health. If you are playing with Arboliva (online or AI solo) then your Giga Drains are gonna have some extra oomph because of the Grassy Terrain. It also means Torterra might choose to hit you with boosted Wood Hammers, but it’s still not much against Brute Bonnet with resistance and boosted Defense.

Get as many Giga Drains that you can before the player stat reset. If you can tera before the reset, do so. If the reset happens before you can tera then I prefer to wait to tera, and I do as many Growths as I can while sun is still up and as long as my health is in decent shape. It’s important to do at least one Growth before the sun goes down. This is because after a Growth, your Special Attack stat is higher than your Defense, which means when you set sun the second time, you’ll get a Special Attack boost from Protosynthesis, which makes you do more damage for the endgame and also heal more with Giga Drain. Now you’re getting the hang of it…. Play like a pro and get the pro perks, lol ;-)

After you have gone Tera and you’ve done some sun-boosted Growths, you can easily recover to full with every Giga Drain even if you eat some big crits. Around this time, Torterra is going to do a second scripted Shell Smash and you want to squash that quickly with another Clear Smog. From there, you are doing huge chunks of damage to the boss, so the endgame will go fast. In solo, I usually Growth all the way to +6 for the endgame. In online play, because Brute Bonnet makes everyone’s life so easy in this raid, normally its a dogpile on the boss after the second Shell Smash. I don’t want to let everyone else have the fun of KO’ing the boss, so I typically jump into the gang tackle even though I’m only at +4 or less.

Enjoy the fast clear and collect all the prime goodies afterwards!

Yes, totally agree. Was astonished at how good it was and frankly it’s a fun sort of semi-support mon with the use of sunny day, which saved me twice in the same battle.

Clear amulet is definitely better than metronome.

Overall, excellent set.

Yeh I was not fond of all the various Decidueyes with Haze wiping the party's buffs. They weren't exactly "runkilling" since +0 Torterra doesn't really do much vs 4 grass types / orthworm but annoying if you had set up some buffs.

On Orthworm's note, I will never stop praising Mud-Slap for how good as a move is, both to build tera and just carry people in general. Throwing the boss to -6 accuracy makes surviving it that much easier even for people who aren't using a optimal mon (my first win had a Walking Wake in the team, who didn't do much other than die twice, but took it so long to die cause of all the misses)

My only thing is Mud Slap can make the fight smoother and is convenient, but I swear Raid bosses are rigged because I had multiple runs where TWO of us were Mud Slapping and the boss spent most of the battle at -5/6, and yet it missed maybe 1 attack out of the 10 it threw at me. RNG be RNG but it does mean I don't trust Accuracy reduction to save a bad run so much as improve a doable one (skipping animations definitely is nice for time)

Well I don't say that accuracy reduction *will* save a bad run, I just say it has a "good chance" to save one :P

Iron Tail, Coil, Protect, and Mud slap? I used that and managed to win.

Weirdly enough Torterra becomes obessed with Smack Down and spammed it during my trial run of Orthworm. I need to test it more to see if Terra was just being weird that time.

This is the set I ended up using for my clear. Tera Steel just to make it easier and I grabbed the Titan one cause why not.

Earth Eater makes the Ground moves a nonconcern, I gave my Orthworm some Def vitamins and just went straight in.

Took 2 attempts, first went side ways fast with Gliscor/Appletun/Serperior - The Gliscor was just getting immediately deleted, and I didn't even get off more than 2 mud slaps before the game was run.

Then I had a few... Bizarre hosts. One with a Mewtwo, one with a locked in Charizard... Noped out of both of those fairly rapidly. Ended up in a raid with 2 other Orthworms and a Meowscarada... Fully expected to get blown out pretty quick with Meow. And doubled down on that thought when it started using Acrobatics... It did end up swapping to Flower Trick at least to do some damage here and there.

The two other Orthworms ran slightly different sets, one was running the Body Press/Iron Def set, and one was running the same but with Iron Head/Tera Steel. The three of us managed to get the damage done, Meow died twice, but honestly I think them dying the second time actually saved the run because they were dead for 10 seconds, which allowed the three of us to really put the hurt on.

Mud Slap was very good in this raid for making misses happen, and just fuelling the free turns. I coiled about 4 times in the end and just threw Iron Tails out for respectable damage, all the while basically ignoring Torterra's offences, even after the second Shell Smash.

Another new one I'm seeing for Support: Haunter with Tera Grass

Clear Smog -> Acid Spray x2 gets it to Tera in the time Torterra evidently takes to pull off a Smack Down -> Ground hit, at which point Haunter hovers over the Ground damage to ignore Tera-Stack damage, while not being weak to it to prompt Smack Down and just eating Wood Hammer. Acid Spray helpful since most teams opt for self-boosting instead of debuffing, so it adds damage that wouldn't otherwise be present.

I've been using Brute Bonnet to farm this raid online, and it has been working wonderfully. This Torterra raid is good for farming, but only if there is a Clear Smog user (Brute Bonnet or Haunter, pretty much). Otherwise, it's a waste of time unless you luck into an online team of nothing but Orthworms. Because without Clear Smog, everything except Orthworm has to be built and played almost perfectly to get a team win. And online there are just too many poorly built or poorly played randos, even if in the lobby they seem to be bringing viable species of mons. But with Clear Smog, if the randos are the right breed (which you can see in the lobby) you have a good chance of winning.

This Torterra raid seems to give team matchups quicker and easier than some past 7* raids (I have no clue why). So I am being very choosy with online teammates, and I bail out of lobbies quickly if there appears to be any crappy teammates. I can cycle through 10-15 lobbies in just a few minutes, and wait to get a good match and still farm at a good rate. The key is not wasting time in losing battles, so it pays to be choosy up front.

Here's a list of rando teammates that are frequently seen in lobbies and generally reliable, *IF* I am using Brute Bonnet as the lynchpin to win:

- Brute Bonnet (obviously!)
- Haunter
- Orthworm
- Arboliva
- Serperior
- Decidueye
- Decidueye-Hisuian
- Sinistcha
- Ogerpon-Teal Mask
- Appleton

Brute Bonnets and Haunters are a sure sign of someone who knows what they are doing. Orthworm probably isn't gonna die, whether it is a noob or a veteran player, so they are a safe bet. Everything else is a crap shoot in terms of expertise, so I prefer the teammates that are very likely to carry sustainable healing (Arboliva, Sinistcha, and Ogerpon-Teal) so they typically don't faint and kill the timer. The other listed breeds are generally reliable, and if they die, they don't die too often, so Brute Bonnet and others can win the raid anyway.

I bail on all the obvious stupid pokemon, like Iron Hands and Miraidon, that dumbasses bring to this raid sometimes. But here's a list of mons that possibly could not be terrible BUT, I bail immediately when I see them because just too often I discover they are NOT well built or well played. They are too often played by noobs and have terrible movesets and bizarre Tera types and they die so frequently that even one of them will kill a team unless the other three players are experts (which almost never happens). These mons are commonly-seen in lobbies and I have adopted a Just Say No stance when I see them:

- Meowscarada (ALWAYS is some noob's ingame starter)
- Azumarill (yeah, anybody but doipy hooves is playing crappy HP+BD with this one)
- Koraidon (always some idiot thinking Legendary = win)
- Arceus (amazing how many noobs have Arceus in this game, and have no clue how to use it)
- Mew (always the wrong tera type or worse)
- Rillaboom (I've had a few wins with these on my team, but too many fanboys on this one to make it worth the risk)
- Chesnaught (same comment as Rilla above)

I'm farming this raid a lot, mainly because the lobby matchups are fast, I love the Herba Mystica, and the Iron drops are great because so many past raids have required Defense EV's (including this one lol) so my Iron stockpile was getting low. This has been good for loot so, I'll maximize the next day or so!
