Small Postgame:

Firstly just wanna say thanks for playing everyone. Congrats winners and condolences losers and I hope you had at least one fun experience from this game. If you liked the game type, you can join EiMM (running games every 3 weeks) via a discord link I posted in the announcements of the game server or DM me and I’ll send it to you.

about me/this game: I’m a pretty seasoned EiMM host/player so this game was just kind of aligned with what I do there. Like this is a 9-5 for me but a new format for so many people. And so a lot of the systems are very complex especially if you’re new to this, so I’m hella sorry for the rule set being a straining read and also for the roles’ and interactions’ complexity as a whole. I did notice a lot of people were surprised how much power they had but that’s pretty standard for this type of FFA.

I made a personal tier list of role abilities listed in the sheet. Each role was balanced up to roughly 100%, so while I’m not gonna say everything is 100% balanced I at least tried to make sure the game was playable for everyone lol. Usually roles have more eyes (1 + 2 checkers at EiMM) but it was just me so bleh. I think only roles I felt kinda bad about were Hyjinks and Twins but I don’t even think they were more than 5% under.

Also that list on the sheet is my adaptation of the EiMM checker (the role balancing council over there) tier list, but I’m curious to see if anyone here at Smogon has any takes, like I’ve seen info seen as very OP when usually in FFA they’re only really useful early game.

Think my only takeaways were that rogues probably go lower on power and I prob shouldn’t have given golem 3 doctors LOL I think I messed up when doing my macro checks of role distribution and brain farted when I think it should’ve gone elsewhere to another guild but I don’t thiiink that mattered since in an ideal world they’d just need to kill each other anyway. More on gameplay later

Setup

Kingdoms had a set of 5 roles built for them. Players were then randed to their kingdoms, then threats + players’ threats were randed. I considered rerolling when I saw some guilds have more familiar players (such as say Golems vs Fairy) but figured I should just let rand be.

The gametype as a whole is a generic FFA, usually playerlist/10 being the final wincon (so 30p -> f3 alive win the game) but this is a specific variant called Wayne Brady I think coined by someone here like Amy or US that I just… modified a bit, inspiration/conceptually taken from Xinnidy who I am unsure will read this but want to thank for the system that made the game possible. Xinnidy is the goat and I hope they read this eventually LOL.

I wanted to hardcode the win condition to:
- F3, where you can
- 3, 1 from 3 diff guilds can win
- have a 3 in one guild win
- one pair of threats can win together, same with 2 guildmates + an ally from another guild
- +1 to the wincon every boss a guild stole

Usually prior WBs did f4 where the easiest wincon was 2 guilds alive, 2 from each guild winning but I didn’t like that at base so I made it harder. Theoretically…

because ultimately since Golem got 3 Boss animals, aka 2 above from base, 2 more Golems deserved to win making it F5. And I think gameplay really balanced it out, like this was the guild that was genuinely the most coordinated, making a GC on N2 and sniping other guilds bosses and working together. It was a good effort from LN and the rest to make it possible.

Threat lists were simple, wanted to make sure there was no like thunderdome so I listed all threats on a list, then did a shift +-5 and +-9 iirc and those were your threats! It ended up making sure you had someone on another guild who

- 1 was your threat
- 1 shared no threats
- 2 had 1 threat shared
- 1 had 2 threats shared

Which ultimately worked out!

Ultimately you were meant to find your guild, take your Boss Animal N2 (Every guild had damage to do it N1, but 2 is safer) and then you can start playing the game of threats and stuff.

However, Pegasus and Cerberus kind of attempted this (finding 3 ppl each iirc) but Golems were the only guild to really do this, so they reaped the rewards and 2 more golems could win. NE I think grabbed Fairy by himself to do it.

Gameplay

So I’ve won about 20 of these games over at EiMM and other offsites etc and what I’ve learned is that you have a better chance when you are

- very selfish
- very social

Which advantages good FFA players via both time invested (cos there’s a lot of people) and how deceptive they’d be. LN legit started off strong by talking to a bunch of people, getting his guild unified, at a point where I don’t think I’d be surprised to say that like at least half the game had their actions heavily influenced by him. I was expecting the winners to be between

- LN from Golem, since he basically ran the game

+ 2, from

Hydro from Griffin, NE from Fairy, and Alice from Cerb since they were also decently social and did their own things. But Hydro died so that was just the 3 + whatever excess bosses, so I guessed Former since Former made himself a really easy 2nd to LN after they sniped the Pegasus Boss N2 and then one of Skip and Sunny once the bosses got claimed, the latter of which unfortunately had threats in the winning team in NE. Zorb and Cele could have made it but needed 2 bosses, and if your kingdom didn’t have a boss like Peg and Griffin you prob just got eliminated. That was most of the shakeup I expected since like N4ish

Overall getting your boss animal was very important. And getting more made it so your guild had less of a chance to be eliminated because its easier to work with a top guild than a weak one. LN on paper could have been stopped but needed to have done so early. His major threat Tommy roached his way to N5 but ultimately prob needed to find Roxie and Twin earlier instead of j relying on him and bluedoom since LN had like a bajillion docs every night, or needed to get his boss animal by finding the rest of Pegasus to shoot N2 instead of just having him/dbd/saber iirc. (Needed akeras and geysers too) Once golems sniped it his guild was kinda doomed.

Btw I would really like to thank Laurel for subbing into a doomed slot and trying, it made the game super interesting for a couple nights cos LN could have realistically died. It probably would’ve been better if he went into Flanders since maybe Griffins could’ve gotten unified but Adam requested a sub first whereas Flanders ghosted me so… thems the breaks. apologies to him and Tommy for an interaction where 3 years ago would have worked as they empowered each other to put like 13 dmg on LNbut the dastardly EiMM checking council changed empower chains from working on eo a couple years back which is why they got blocked.

Overall I think gameplay was done well, everyone that won took damage, so as nobody had a perfect it was hard fought by everyone. IMO LN controlled the narrative of the game and Alice, Former and NE were able to be the best in their guilds to assist and the last winner slot between Skip/Sunny was able to happen due to 3 sniped bosses. Some people made it close like Lechen, Zorbees, Celever, and ofc Twin Tommy and Laurel and Roxie did well by trying to flip LN (sadly didn’t pan out due to control outside of the threats siding with LN.) Thanks to the new players like geysers hyjinks akeras etc for playing too and giving it your best shot.

Ofc congrats to all the winners and well deserved though a win is a win.

Ty to Arby for checking the wincon with me, and OM and crow crumbs for ressing a few nights each.

And again thank you for playing!

Dang, so this is how our 19 damage was blocked? We don’t really resolve this way on Smogon ORGs but I respect you for following your system.

I am proud of at least coming up with that gameplan and convincing Roxie to help out at the last second.

I basically just crashed out at this point since the only way a double empower swap fails FMPOV is high prioritizer / leak.

Would have been interesting to turn the game upside down..

Sure - I mean the sub priority rules are listed in the OP. But it was an interaction that worked before the checkers at the FFA server voted to change (since well, there is no stop to two empowers being used on each other if it did win all sub priority conflicts.)

I do think ultimately LN would have taken 13 but he had 10 in protection as no successful blocks on Marsh [Skip] or River [Sunny] were done [even assuming the chain succceeded], so to me I think the only thing that would have effectively changed was his victory at 7 HP instead of 10, especially since you couldn't consecutively do it again. But who knows!
