In general, I'm seeing lots of top tier matchups where you say the wishiwashi matchup is set-dependent, which is never a good sign. In addition, some of your 'winning' matchups are also set-dependent: zyg beats band with skitter smack WP (I think you actually mention this in the calc section), Aggron wins if it's metal burst, jirachi wins if it's stall, nagandel can roll to win if it's modest specs, volcarona rolls to kill with offensive subswarm (in addition to having 5 chances to dodge a move), ZapG beats band trivially if it's not band itself (sometimes even then I think?), specs rolls vs blaziken even if you have whirlpool, clef beats band with counter (iron tail barely doesn't KO) and can CM stall / missfish specs, the list goes on.

I'm just not seeing much of a reason to run this over, say, swampert, which is another water type with the bulk to take on fast frail offense, except with a phletora of other tools in yawn, endure torrent hydro, countercoat, electric immunity... Wishiwashi is cool, but power creep hit it hard and I don't think it's still viable.

The reason it was nominated over escavalier is presumably its higher physical bulk (see below), as well as its better urshifu and sawk matchups. Shelmet is much less afraid of Fire- and Fighting-moves than Escavalier, making it much more useful in those matchups.

For the purpose of avoiding a 3hko from full, which is what a rest staller cares about, shelmet's bulk is still slightly better. The point about different weaknesses and resistances also still applies. A few situations where those matter:

-Band sawk rolls vs maxdef escavalier.
-Nonband sawk with fire punch beats esca but not shelmet.
-LO bulk up urshifu straightforwardly beats escavalier but loses to shelmet.
-SD lando-T can 3hko escavalier after setting up along it, cannot beat shelmet with its most common moveset
-Random fire coverage from mons like band garchomp and celesteela (commonly runs fire moves but no flying moves).

Obviously there's also a lot of situations where escavalier does better, and I'm interested in spork's nomination.

Wishiwashi is a very bulky and strong threat in School form, which allows it to check many prominent threats in the 1v1 metagame, including urshifu-s, genesect,zygarde, aggron, and arcanine. Also this mon is 100% carried by its bst of 620 because its movepool sucks. Wishiwashi's monstrous stats allows it to ohko or 2hko most offensive threats, and gives this mon a valuable niche in the current metagame. Due to these reason, I believe wishiwashi should be put on the viability rankings.

Band is pretty straightforward, max max, also underspeeds mons like diancie, aegislash, and others. The specs set is Ev'd to tank HJK from banded pheromosa. On the band set, aqua tail is for stab, eq for coverage, iron tail for faires like lele and ice beam to smack things like zygarde or lando-t. For the specs set, hydro for stab, beam for zyg, eq for coverage(mud slap bad lol), iron tail can be used for fairies or whirlpool for endure/sturdy users.

Also just a disclaimer for the calcs below, some of these calcs were made before adam gave me the current specs set, as it was previously was just 252 spatk 4 atk 252 hp. All of the old calcs/mus are still the same, shifu gets ohkoed, sect loses, zyg loses, etc.

If someone has Wishiwashi experience, its got to be me right? I have a ton of ladder battles with "The Swish" and i feel like D Tier would fit it better than the C- for various reasons,
I see Wishiwashi in D Tier so people know it exists but i wouldnt want to motivate people to use Wishiwashi in 1v1 over Volcanion or Primarina because except for the fact that Wishiwashi handily handles both Zygarde and Genesect safely with a specs set, Wishiwashi is straight up outclassed by them and Suicune can fit the role of a bulky special attacker almost the exact same way without needing to run a choice item. It is sometimes hard to measure what is required of a pokemon to be ranked in a certain spot on the VR but im trying to compare Wishiwashi to the C- Ranked Talonflame here and i can surely say about this that tflame has more consistent matchups than Wishiwashi, the same goes for slowking galar. Iron Tail is also an unreliable move so the swishs matchups stay even more inconsistent while other water types do not have to rely on moves with such low accuracy. Also you missed Assault Vest Wishiwashi. With Players like Rosa and Ravonne in this community it is almost unbelievable to me that people will nominate pokemon without considering an av set and suprise suprise AV Wishiwashi can run Earthquake which pops avaluggs sturdy to then follow up with a nice hot scald to score the KO. I do not have any fancy calcs to prove AVs Viability and im really just showing Wishiwashi's potential because its movepool is not actually so terrible as stated in the nomination . Wishiwashi is kind of unexpected too and hard to predict so again, D Tier would fit it nicely as it has a very small niche that makes it hard to justify a ranking any higher than that, theres probably many more spreads and sets (and im confident there will be a wacan set at some point, just look at this:

For the purpose of avoiding a 3hko from full, which is what a rest staller cares about, shelmet's bulk is still slightly better. The point about different weaknesses and resistances also still applies. A few situations where those matter:

-Band sawk rolls vs maxdef escavalier.
-Nonband sawk with fire punch beats esca but not shelmet.
-LO bulk up urshifu straightforwardly beats escavalier but loses to shelmet.
-SD lando-T can 3hko escavalier after setting up along it, cannot beat shelmet with its most common moveset
-Random fire coverage from mons like band garchomp and celesteela (commonly runs fire moves but no flying moves).

Obviously there's also a lot of situations where escavalier does better (nihilego, to name something), and I'm interested in spork's nomination.

That's the entire point I was making: leftovers don't matter on turn 3, because if something kills you in three turns then you're dead before you get your third-turn leftovers healing.

Turn 1: your opponent does something, you rest.
Turn 2: your opponent attacks for X, you are asleep, you heal 6.
Turn 3: your opponent attacks for X, you are asleep, you heal 6.
Turn 4: your opponent attacks for X, you either die or you wake up and rest again. Leftovers don't matter either way.

Total amount of damage taken between rests: three times X. Total amount of damage healed between rests: 12. The entire point I was making was that leftovers were more complicated than 6% less damage per turn, and how that meant lefties esca was still easier to kill than eviolite shelmet.

All of these match ups can be covered by running a different escavalier set (metal burst). I actually had metal burst escavalier in mind while writing that post, and the matchups I mention still beat it. You already admitted landoT, to cover the others:

Sawk obviously isn't affected by metal burst because it's sturdy, rolls are unchanged. Band CC always has a chance to 2hko, while band needs the much less common Fire Punch versus Shelmet (most band sawks are CC/pjab/knock/ice punch now, in my experience).

LO urshifu actually survives metal burst if its first attack is a low roll (196x1.5 = 294, 90% of 341 is 306, urshifu lives with 12 HP), eyeballing it there's about a one-in-four chance for escavalier to lose to ada LO. Jolly LO has even better odds, still 2hkos a metal burst set.

Garchomp always has a chance to OHKO escavalier with fire fang, metal burst or not (252 Atk Choice Band Garchomp Fire Fang vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Escavalier: 296-352 (86 - 102.3%) -- 18.8% chance to OHKO).

The same garchomp's best roll against shelmet is 252 Atk Choice Band Garchomp Outrage vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Eviolite Shelmet: 157-186 (51.6 - 61.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO, not enough to stop it from going in a rest-cycle where outrage selfhits and pp stall will cause garchomp to lose.

Fire blast garchomp is not 'in favor of KOing shelmet'. 0 SpA Garchomp Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Eviolite Shelmet: 124-148 (40.7 - 48.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO, the initial hit does less than 50% so shelmet wins with t1 struggle bug (1/2 x 2/3 = 1/3) followed by rest stall (I think it might even live a t1 burn, which is literally the worst possible situation). Escavalier, again, just loses here.

Similarly, flamethrower celesteela will almost never do enough to kill shelmet. Esca can win if it is metal burst and if the celesteela doesn't play around it (y'know what custap celesteela can't play around? basic shelmet)

Note that occa berry will not help escavalier against a lot of fire coverage. In many cases, like the aforementioned garchomp and celesteela matchups, but also against things like scarf fire punch urshifu where metal burst does help (hey, that's another matchup that esca needs to sacrifice a move for and shelmet gets by default!), it reduces the damage from their fire moves so much that metal burst can never OHKO back. Pokemon like adamant band fire punch zeraora fall in this amusing category where escavalier dies to them if non-occa, but can't kill them with metal burst if occa (shelmet, of course, just clicks Iron Defense because it's not 4x weak to fire).

Finally, let's consider the LO urshifu argument, where you claim that LO urshifu always beats Shelmet simply by setting up and 3hkoing.

LO urshifu needs to setup to +6 to have a chance against shelmet, +5 Wicked Blow is insufficient (see below). Shelmet clicks struggle bug t4, struggle bug t5, and Encore t6 (assuming urshifu kept setting up t1-t5, anything else is a loss bc it will never deal enough damage). There's two possibilities then:

It's now encored into an useless move for three more turns, letting shelmet use struggle bug three more times, then two more times while urshifu attacks (and deals 20% recoil to itself). As SB is a 12.3-14.3 roll, urshifu dies before it can land a third blow (7x12.3=86.1 and 86.1+20 > 100).
-Urshifu used Wicked Blow t6. It's now locked into an attack that makes it take self-damage every turn and can't 3hko. Shelmet clicks struggle bug t7, then Rests t8 and sleeps t9 as urshifu's encore ends. Urshifu has taken 40% recoil, as well as at least 36.9 from three struggle bugs. Urshifu can't set up at this point, as shelmet will live one +6 attack and rest again (dooming urshifu to death by LO), but attacking two more times also makes it die to recoil while shelmet has a 96.7% chance to live.

Megahorn gives it good damage output but can be replaced with X-Scissor for a more consistent accuracy for something like Rilla.

This was not something I thought of, thank you for explaining it.

Comments on the other things: I have no idea how to easily calc the Metal Burst damage, so I didn't know if any of them were guaranteed to kill after Mburst. Even then, Flamethrower is more common on Gene and the second most common item is LO, so it will stay as a W/L.

Just a note about the above Escavalier set that was credited to me.
That was made in DLC1. Very outdated. Usable to a degree since some moves can be tweaked to beat stuff like Aggrons, some prims, tapu finis, Venusaur, anything with sleep powder, just slap a custap on instead of occa to make it better overall or something. Nonetheless, its not really a set you should consider in the nom. Escavalier is still a workable mon though, and definitely can deserve around C or C+ if enough work is put into it, which Spork did :D

As promised, here's my Big Jellicent Propaganda Post.


D to C/C+

Anyone who's seen me on ladder in the past few days probably knows I love this mon. It reliably answers genesect with barely any effort (tbolt LO/specs is the only concerning matchup, and maranga recover easily handles it), leaving its item slot, wide movepool, and EV spread all very customizable. Its typing lets it check the vast majority of Fire-, Steel-, and Ice-types, all of which are very relevant in the current meta.

Typing isn't the only meta trend that's favorable to jellicent. Jellicent tends to lose to fast setup pokemon (like SD garchomp and acid spray nihilego), but over the past few weeks this entire archetype has been seeing less usage. Meanwhile, hard stall, frail all-out offense, and setup-less bulky offense like AV arcanine or kyurem are becoming more prominent, all of which Jellicent does solid against. Zygarde, the most notable setup pokemon, often still loses to Taunt+Strength Sap+Night Shade on Jellicent, and even the Toxic set lives in fear of Cursed Body activating after it gets Taunted (and loses to Rest, which is surprisingly viable if you're using strength sap already).

The bulky maranga set (included in the compendium) is a good example of what Jellicent can run (although I recommend some speed creep), but it has many other viable options. Toxic drastically quickens some matchups, Trick Scarf surprises some faster Taunt users, and its mere existence discourages opponents from clicking t1 setup. Kee is very annoying when combined with Strength Sap and greatly improves Jellicent's physical bulk. For team options, I'd recommend genesect, toxic zygarde, and subseeders, all of which I've had success with.

I'm not asking for anything major here: I simply believe that with its wide array of options, neat top tier synergies, massive 3-0 potential, and a favorable meta, jellicent deserves to be ranked in the upper C tiers, as opposed to its current D rating. Articuno, Quagsire, and Regice all currently occupy C: Jellicent seems much better than any of those, especially with the current meta taken into account.

Spectrier nominated to A/A-



Spectrier is quite literally a one trick pony.

It’s an A+ rank Pokémon but only has one viable set in the set comp? Yea I know it has a reliable matchup against the best Pokémon in the meta right now but I can easily name a Pokémon that can beat genesect that isn’t a fire type and can beat others like zygarde, and other top tier mons.

My main issue with the pony is how it’s easily to cheese cause it has one set, something like knock off zera can easily beat it and stuff like banded pult.
Outrage 2HKO even with the burn since outrage with the burn and hell, outrage half of the time kills half of the time.

I know some trick users can easily beat this like Fini or other good trick users and even something like Jellicent can beat this thing if you know what you’re doing.

I know Spectrier is good at what it does and beats quite a lot of stuff but when it quite literally only has one set in the set comp and ranked this high (it was ranked S- at some point iirc) it makes me not wanna use it cause my opponent will know what the set is (unless it’s some weird tech) but then, people have a hard time with pult due to the many sets it has.

EDIT: yes I know phantom force essentially auto wins due to you being faster most of the time but decided not to mention it in my initial post to show that just a normal powerful stab band outrage can beat Spectrier. But ig the horse can disable on the outrage ig or land a crit hex.

Aegislash nominated to B/B+

I am completely new to Smogon forum in general, and to this thread, but I would like to suggest Aegislash as at least a B tier. Physical Weakness Policy sets have great type coverage, strong attack and defenses if played well, as well as protect and STAB priority to deal with custap sets and the like. It has good matchups against a majority of Pokémon in tiers above it, in my experience. When paired with Fini, it covers a huge amount of the meta, allowing for a 3rd mon to cover the holes in terms of whatever is popular at the time. I have compiled, with some criticism and testing from the 1v1 chat room, what has been my perceived history against the mons currently in S through B- Tier in the past 2 weeks or so using my WP Aegislash set. This pastebin also comments on which mons Aegislash loses to, but are beaten by Tapu Fini. I may be completely wrong, but I currently think Aegislash+Fini+(A dragon of your choice, maybe Zygarde?) is an extremely strong set. Apologies if this is a bit all over the place or not the preferred format. I can start adding replays to the pastebin with the matchups for Aegi if needed.

Edit: This is a pretty finely tuned Aegi set in terms of EVs. Also, it's just worth noting that Aegislash made an excellent check to Genesect, as this set forced a physical attack boost that was taken away if the Genesect wanted to use it. Sacred sword+ Shadow Sneak, if WP was triggered, was enough to kill. Also, while this set is sometimes prediction reliant, it allows for a high skill ceiling, in my opinion.

So I will admit that I was probably over zealous about some MUs, and not super familiar with all of the available sets when I was making my calls, but I think some of these matchups are wrong, so I'll respond to each one.
Pult: Yeah I was wrong
ID Fini: Didn't know this set existed before yesterday but also absolutely correct
Seed Offense: My b on this one, I mostly meant that it loses to Seed sets.
NP Naga: Wrong, iron head to shadow sneak kills
Bulky Lando: You're right, again I hadn't enountered this set yet
Physdef Aroma: Have literally never seen this and am not too sure about that but I'll take your word for it
Counter Sawk: I'll let you figure that one out
Zarude: 18% chance it loses that

As for Arcanine, you're probably right.

There are just alot of things you do not take into account with this Aegislash, such as the fact that fighting type moves don't hit ghost types, but you are correct, my list was over confident, underinformed, and inaccurate. I still maintain that Aegislash is very much slept on, considering a trick fini fixes alot of these weaknesses anyways. But just so we're clear, I was wrong.
