this guy is a big social battery running out of power, also inspired by abstract creature robot pets like furbys. The horns are also supposed to look sorta like nightcaps and the Z shaped eyes like sleep masks.

(I thought I had submitted but I can’t find the message anywhere so tell me if I did something wrong)

> Command, come in, Command.

> We hear you, what’s the situation?

> We’ve arrived in Sector chenmoH ︎︎︎and have encountered various hostile lifeforms such as humanoids made of currency, missile-firing herpetoids and even animate literature. We need reinforcements, pronto.

> Roger, help is on the way.

Defender of the galaxy, here arrives a space chimp! The plasma globe helmet generates electrical charges via contact, which powers up its ray gun tail to unleash a deadly Discharge.

A very basic model sheet
  • Primates in space, most famously chimpanzees such as Ham. By extension, the design also dives into some outer space sci-fi tropes.
  • The eyes are directly modeled after the stereotypical Gray alien. The plus-shaped pupils evoke stars as a visual pun on "starry-eyed."
  • The saturated color palette and lightning bolt patterns evoke the typical attire of the heroes in sci-fi pulp magazines, with Flash Gordon being the main frame of reference.
  • As mentioned before, the tail is a ray gun, a common fictional weapon in sci-fi settings that are often associated with sci-fi pulp.
  • The helmet is based on astronaut suits, the visual twist being that the helmet is also a plasma globe with the head being the conduit. This not only reinforces the electrical theming, but plasma globes happen to be electrical objects that are associated with being touched, justifying Electromorphosis.
  • I also took a little inspiration from Ro-Man, the infamous gorilla-suited antagonist of Robot Monster, this inspiration coming in the form of the antennae on the helmet as well as the bulky gray arms.

Special thanks to Amamama, ausma, breadstickslug, Chillie, drifbloomCF, Explosion Badger, Gravity Monkey, HealthGage, Kiwi, Mintly, Mos-Quitoxe, nbstellarbh, Pipotchi, Quanyails, Quotidian, Sunfished and last but not least uppa for all the feedback, support, and occasional pep talks <3

MODPOST
The CAP art mods have some scheduling difficulties tomorrow around the time of the planned art submission deadline, and we don't want to close the thread and have it sit for hours with artists wondering when the poll will go up. We also are not too keen on having the CAP art poll on the same day as the US election, with CAP mods and members potentially dealing with real life issues like long lines at the polls and other things. And, last but not least, perhaps any artists that are stressing over getting their submissions done in time, they might welcome some extra time to work on their submission.

So, with all that in mind, the CAP 35 Art Submission deadline will be extended until Wednesday, November 6th at 2:00pm US Eastern Time.

For convenience, here is a link to an updated countdown timer for everyone:

What is a Normal-type but a type that encompasses a lack of type? What if that Normal-type, like Terapagos, had every "type" there is? Computer parts armadillo was my personal favourite and determined-unique idea from what I had, so here he is! He salvages various computer parts for armour to protect the sensitive "35" circuit board tummy. Enjoys games at a leisurely pace and consuming the occasional electric field off wandering Porygon.

I don't have nearly as much time or brainspace to dive into CAP as I used to, but I did enjoy this one for the opportunity to cram in various computer parts and motifs into one body as much as possible. Flexible keyboard armour. Galarian/Paldean lettering. Lightning symbol ear. Wiring tail. Cursor toes. Thanks to IronTemplar and EnderTrenton for their usual support and faith in me, and anyone else who's cast a friendly feedback in my general direction.

Description

My design is a fun twist on the idea of a rescue dog. Instead of helping in mountain snow emergencies, this canine mon helps in cases of electrical power emergencies! It has an organic battery in place of the traditional rescue dog barrel around its neck. It also has an exoskeleton and long cables inspired by the harnesses and straps worn by working sled dogs. These organic "jumper cables" can be used to deliver powerful jolts of electricity amongst other things. The look of the cables is based heavily around the lightning surge arresters seen on high-voltage power lines. The overall canine look is based on a mix of dog breeds, including St. Bernard, Bulldog, and Chow.

Art Style

On CAP 35, like on most CAP projects, I experimented with new art techniques. Over the past couple of years I have been trying to learn more painterly skills and rely less on my go-to lineart illustration techniques that I have used my whole life. Trying to create shapes with value rather than linework is not natural for me, but it's been fun to learn. For a pokemon design contest, this isn't exactly a great thing, since pokemon is colored LINEART (duh).

On this CAP I used a very detailed digital painting style that looks almost 3D modeled in some parts. The style is similar to the one I used on my fairy seahorse design for CAP 33. However on CAP 33 I intentionally used super-thin outlines so as to make the design look similar to the style of Pokemon Go and Pokemon Home. On this CAP I used distinct outlines, while still trying to keep the design less reliant on the linework and more on the shapes created by digital painting.

I'm really happy with the result, but I don't think I want to go this detailed with my renders in the future. It's just a LOT of work for me, and although I love the end result from an art perspective, I suspect some people may be put off by the style, because it is not the clean cell-shaded lineart that is typically used for Pokemon and anime. But hey, it was a fun experiment for me to try something new, and I hope you like it!

More Snake Mouse.png

Rather than a single Electric/Normal mon, I decided to get wacky and make it a combination of two mons, one Electric and one Normal. Think of the double mons concept as similar to Slowbro+Shellder or mom+child Kangaskhan.

The Electric-type is the snake, whose body resembles a cable/extension cord. It has the combo of a cobra's hood with a wall outlet design and a rattlesnake's tail that resembles another outlet. Cuz of the former I like to call it Cordbra! (that's just for a pun not an actual name dw) Also the fangs are shaped like prongs or w/e they're called.

The Normal-type is the rodent, majorly based on the generic early-game Normal-types. It wasn't intentionally based on a specific animal, I just wanted something simple and cute. Added some blue areas so it wouldn't look too boring though.

The idea is that the two mons become "one" by the rodent controlling the snake using its thin but long af tails, which it inserts into outlet at the end of the snake (as shown in the art). The rodent is very weak, so it uses the snake to do a lotta things like using it as a shield, riding it, and having it use most of the attacks (would've drawn but got lazy/too close to deadline). However, the snake is otherwise the rodent's predator so it has to continuously keep control, hence the uphill battle theme.

Idk what shiny color the rodent would be, but the snake would def be black (Iwas too lazy to draw that too).

Inspiration ;^)
