Description
My design is a fun twist on the idea of a rescue dog. Instead of helping in mountain snow emergencies, this canine mon helps in cases of electrical power emergencies! It has an organic battery in place of the traditional rescue dog barrel around its neck. It also has an exoskeleton and long cables inspired by the harnesses and straps worn by working sled dogs. These organic "jumper cables" can be used to deliver powerful jolts of electricity amongst other things. The look of the cables is based heavily around
the lightning surge arresters seen on high-voltage power lines. The overall canine look is based on a mix of dog breeds, including St. Bernard, Bulldog, and Chow.
Art Style
On CAP 35, like on most CAP projects, I experimented with new art techniques. Over the past couple of years I have been trying to learn more painterly skills and rely less on my go-to lineart illustration techniques that I have used my whole life. Trying to create shapes with value rather than linework is not natural for me, but it's been fun to learn. For a pokemon design contest, this isn't exactly a great thing, since pokemon is colored LINEART (duh).
On this CAP I used a very detailed digital painting style that looks almost 3D modeled in some parts. The style is similar to the one I used on
my fairy seahorse design for CAP 33. However on CAP 33 I intentionally used super-thin outlines so as to make the design look similar to the style of Pokemon Go and Pokemon Home. On this CAP I used distinct outlines, while still trying to keep the design less reliant on the linework and more on the shapes created by digital painting.
I'm really happy with the result, but I don't think I want to go this detailed with my renders in the future. It's just a LOT of work for me, and although I love the end result from an art perspective, I suspect some people may be put off by the style, because it is not the clean cell-shaded lineart that is typically used for Pokemon and anime. But hey, it was a fun experiment for me to try something new, and I hope you like it!
