Media One Piece (spoilers!)

Luffy has always been portrayed as a simple guy. Not complex at all. So i think in his case it would be enough. I've never liked any of the Sanji fights. None. I love Sanji but he usually gets bland enemies. Bon Kurei being like the only exception. Zoro gets a freaking giraffe! And the second strongest in the enemies side which is usually also the 2nd coolest bad guy. And i also think Sanjis fighting style doesn't translate well to a manga... Kicks and more kicks... Yep.

That noodle guy was hilarious though.

The problem with Sanji's fights is that, with the exception of Kurobi and Bon Clay, all of them are focused more on comedy than action. Which is probably why I wouldn't consider him on par with Luffy or Zoro, because he's almost never portrayed seriously as a fighter.

I loved Pell. I was so sad when he "died." But the impermanence really ruins it, I mean seriously. I actually can't decide how I'd feel if he came back and was relevant (never going to happen, but just theorizing). On one hand I really liked his character (at least however many years ago when I read that part, please don't ask me to justify it now) and it would make his survival actually relevant to plot, but still the whole thing was bs in the first place.

I think he let Pell live simply because he doesn't like killing off characters unless there's plot significance (Ace and Whitebeard, everyone who died in a flashback). Oda strikes me as the kind of guy who likes having a ton of material to work with, and putting a definite end to a possible future resource without having a significant effect caused by the death itself would seem impractical to a guy like him.

I was actually damn confused about Pell being alive, I thought it might've been someone else.

I mean, his death was pretty legit. He sacrificed himself for his country/countrymen, got a sad funeral and a bunch of grieving people, etc. He was as dead as you can be in OP short of a giant hole in your chest. Why bring him back? Not only is it, like, how the hell did they miss him being alive, but why throw away all that emotion just to randomly bring him back from the dead? So I actually figured I'd just forgotten someone from Alabasta that looked like that and was like whatever.

As for what Robotnik's saying, there's a reason to let him stay dead- so it doesn't feel like you're just jerking us around. This goes double if he has no plot significance, because it means you just brought him back to bring him back. The significant effect is that we don't go WTF?

I liked the fight with her and Miss DF - If her staff was awesome right off the bat then that'd be a bit of a deus ex machina for her... suddenly being able to use amazing fighting abilities when previously she was next to useless? I think that fight showed off exactly how witty she can be.

No I didn't want her to be a god, I liked that she had to struggle and think and come up with creative ways to use the staff. That was great! What I didn't like was that a life and death fight right after Nami gives a speech about how she doesn't want to be weak anymore and doesn't want to let her friends down is taken with no seriousness whatsoever. I'd have much preferred a serious fight that didn't involve a bunch of slapsticky gags in the middle of it.

Well considering she just got the staff, it'd make no sense for her to be a master with it, in fact I'd bet even Usopp is better with the staff atm since he made it. She'll get noticably better with each arc, but she's not going to suddenly be able to destroy things left and right.

As above I only wanted a serious fight not one where she can crush planets. But also worth mentioning that in the very fight Nami says that Usopp had no idea of the full implications of the staff's capabilities, so she undoubtedly would've been better with it than him.

OK. FINISHED THE ARC AND JUST READ BON CLAY "sacrifice himself" FOR THE STRAW HATS (I doubt he's dead considering that by the sounds of it everyone who appeared to have died in this Alabasta Arc actually didn't)... onwards to whatever is next.

As for characters who should've stayed dead: The fucking Viking Giant. That was such a heart-wrenching tragedy storyline that I was actually deflated when he stood back up "Oh sup guys I was taking a nap".

Lol, wait till you find out who survived during the Alabasta Arc ( I believe you do later in a cover page).

Well here are the people who "appeared" to have died in that arc.

Igaram, the little Kid, Khoza, Chaka, Pell, Nico Robin, Bon Clay.

And I just saw a doctor telling someone they forget Pell's Hood, so he either is alive or someone finds corpse fashion intriguing. My money is on alive. And of course, the rest have been walking around for a while. Only ones yet to show up are Nico Robin and Bon Clay. I know Nico Robin becomes a part of the crew, so I'M ONLY LEFT UNCERTAIN OF THE OKAMA.

2.) Alabasta - Luffy's first loss (not counting the technical loss to Don Krieg), Zoro learning Shishi Sonson, Usopp's manly speech that drove some beloved Smogon users to tears, intro to Bon Clay's epic friendship...only negative was Vivi. Fuck Vivi.

Whaa? Almost everyone I know thought Pell was lame, but then again most of them thought Vivi was the best character ever too so idk...
What was so bad about Vivi guys? I think she was an ok character. Not bad and not the best, but her concern and love about her country were admirable.

Vivi is disliked because she was the "escort" mission. She dies and you restart the level/game. People naturally dislike needy characters like vivi.

EDIT: Tehvalkry please tell us when you finish Skypiea so the Enel wars can start. Not sure who in this thread is which side though.

Vivi would've been a nice character... if Oda had not given her such a huge part that it seemed almost certain she'd be the New Nakama. She even had the whole tragic backstory thing going for a while. Even though she was Usopp/Nami level weak at the time, the character had potential to be more than "just another friend" the Strawhats met along the way. Instead, she was relegated to side character who didn't even play a major role in resolving the conflict: she has no fight, and all she pretty much did was stand in front of a bunch of charging revolutionaries who completely ignored her. Finally, we're left disappointed in the end with Nico Robin joining instead of Vivi. Robin obviously became far more interesting after we learned about the Ohara incident, but at the time, I was pissed that Miss All Fucking Sunday would be joining the crew instead. Vivi essentially went from "Future Strawhat" to weakling who got far too much screen time, wasted character development opportunity, and in the end wasn't even that important for the arc itself.

Honestly the only way I can justify Vivi getting so much screen time/Pell surviving is if Oda is planning a reverie arc where both of them to play big roles, but I doubt it.

I'm almost sure Pell was popular in Japan by the polls they held during the Alabasta arc... but I may be wrong.

Hmm interesting, I the Japanese have different taste than Canadians lol.

Actually, I felt it'd be pretty obvious Vivi wasn't joining the Straw Hats, and I would've been pissed if she was.

I mean, think about it. Vivi had no real REASON to go with them. Yes, she was friends with them, but she'd known them for a pretty short period of time, and that would be her only reason. She has no real "dream" or "goal", she doesn't even seem to like the sea or ships very much. She has no skill to offer them either.

Meanwhile, her entire country is being rebuilt and she's the princess. Her father, her best friend, and a bunch of people she's known all her life are here. She has something to DO here, as opposed to tagging along on someone else's adventure.

Well, Crocodile tried to stage a coup in Alabasta only to find Pluton.

Tee hee.

I find this hilarious. Not only did he not find Pluton, but he was indirectly responsible for the Straw Hats getting the guy with the blueprints. Robin wouldn't have joined up with them if Luffy didn't beat Crocodile's ass, and they probably would've thought Franky was still the bad guy if CP9 didn't take Robin, so because of his stunt in Alabasta, the Straw Hats have the closest connection to the Pluton (yes, I know he burnt the blueprints, but it's closer than Croc ever got).

Who are everyone's favorite characters in the series thus far?

Favorite Straw Hat:
SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUPEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
Franky_pre_and_post2.PNG

This guy is the embodiment of everything I love about One Piece characters. He's hilarious, badass, all-around awesome, has a touching backstory, and a completely ridiculous and exaggerated body. Also I have a soft spot for the "thug with a heart" archetype, which this guy pulls off best (with Kuwabara as a close second).

Favorite Non-Straw Hat:
I'd have to say either Bon Clay or Whitebeard. Bon is without a doubt the ultimate bro, and Whitebeard is without a doubt the ultimate father figure.

Favorite Villain:
For who I think is the best at being a villain, definitely either Crocodile or Blackbeard. For who's the biggest monster, Arlong. Favorite character who's a villain would probably be Buggy, though.

Yes yes, it was discussed and agreed upon. I even used that picture as evidence when the simple minded dare compare Enel to Akainu/Admirals. Does anyone really believe Akainu could make a face like that? Nope. Case closed.

*prays Oda keeps Akainu being badass all the time*

Also, the art is amazing no? Will skim through Skypiea tommorow to see if Oda has already started cramming a crapload of err crap into each panel. At some point it even gets to 1 OP panel having more art and information than 2 Naruto pages. Especially the newer Naruto chapters.

As i already stated in my original post, Whitebeard, Akainu and then Blackbeard. And i already said why so i won't go into as much detail as drrobotnik above.

And i agree, as an American reading a Japanese story i really feel like i can connect with Franky the most. You know, him being American and all. I also love his constant crying. I think it is a genius gag. Especially when it was a new thing. Couldn't get enough of it.

Imagine if Akainu thought he was literally a god and then he fought some guy who he couldn't do anything against. That is the face he would make.

Although, Seastoned Akainu is probably a hundred times stronger than seastoned Eneru.

I finished the Skypeia Arc and just showed up on Long Island (Rolf).

My thoughts on Skypeia is that Enel is a terrifying villain and just happens to be countered by Luffy. Honestly, I think he's gonna come back into this shindig and be a major player especially if he grabs a power-up or two if there's some major power-creep going on later.

I enjoyed that this arc wasn't driven by one core individual like all the other arcs, and that it was a collection of people... however the fact that it was a collection of people made me also feel less detached than I was to the plight of characters like Vivi in Alabasta or [insert crewmember and their respective arc here]. Overall, I didn't like how the characters didn't have any defined goals/dreams and were largely undecided on what they wanted to do until way late in the arc. It left all the characters feeling flat a majority of the time, and made it seem as if the Straw Hats were just being dragged along fighting to save themselves, rather than being active participants fighting for a cause with these people.

ANYWHO: ON TO THE NEXT ARC.
