Introduction

World Cup of Other Metagames has countries go head to head to decide who will be crowned champions. This year was its fifth iteration, full of many new faces and new tiers, as SS AG, SS 2v2, and SS Godly Gift were all featured as metagames for the first time. World Cup is an exciting tour, as there is a team that represents everyone, creating a strong sense of camaraderie among each team. The teams this year were Asia Pacific, Canada, Europe, France, UK, US Northeast, US South, and US West, and the tiers played were SS 2v2, SS Almost Any Ability, SS Anything Goes, SS Balanced Hackmons, SS Godly Gift, SS Mix and Mega, SS NFE, and SS STABmons.

Team Introductions

Asia Pacific

Captains: adem and pichus

Predicted Week 1 Lineup

  • 2v2: RobDog747
  • AAA: Dj Breloominati&9836;/ longhiep341
  • AG: lotiasite
  • BH: MAMP
  • GG: Dj Breloominati&9836;/ longhiep341
  • MnM: TectonicDestroyer / nvk
  • NFE: Chloe
  • STAB: DugZa
Primal Kyogre

Returning from a strong top 4 placement last year, new managers adem and pichus have inherited a quality roster with strong additions in lotiasite for Anything Goes and RobDog747 for 2v2. With quality pilots across the board, Asia Pacific's primary issue this year will be building support. DugZa, Chloe, and RobDog747 are more than capable of playing well but have not proven themselves in their respective tiers yet as strong builders. TectonicDestroyer is likely to be slotted in Mix and Mega again and should do well in this pool with his experience and knowledge. longhiep341 is a new face to the World Cup scene but has proven himself to be strong in both AAA and Godly Gift, while DJ Breloominati is a solid choice in those as well. MAMP should be poised to do well again and will anchor this roster in BH. Overall, Asia Pacific has a strong roster but are in a tough pool, making them unlikely contenders for playoffs, though they are more than capable of making it if they can put together some good teams.

Canada

Captains: Fc and omicorio

Predicted Week 1 Lineup

  • 2v2: adam3560
  • AAA: avyrie
  • AG: Fc
  • BH: Tanny89k / Career Ended
  • GG: Jrdn / Mossy Sandwich
  • MnM: Career Ended
  • NFE: Elfuseon
  • STAB: Potatochan
Calyrex-I

Canada is coming off a decent OM World Cup, finishing in sixth place last year. Fc and omicorio captain the team, with Fc being able to provide good support for STABmons and AG. The team this year is very average, with very strong slots such as Fc in AG and Jrdn in Godly Gift but also what looks like very weak slots in NFE and STAB, with their players having close to zero experience in them. Career Ended and avyrie will both be very interesting to watch, as while both underperformed in OMPL, Career Ended did very well in the Mix and Mega Seasonal and can help support in AAA and BH, and avyrie has been playing AAA for a long time and is very knowledgeable in the tier. Tanny89k is relatively new but has demonstrated that he have a good knowledge of BH and shouldn't be slept on, while adam3560 has proven himself with good records in previous 2v2 team tours. The team's chances of making the playoffs don't look amazing, as they will have to rely on their star players winning almost every week to make it, but it is very possible that their less proven slots will perform well and push them through.

Europe

Captains: pannuracotta and Ainzcrad

Predicted Week 1 Lineup

  • 2v2: STABLE
  • AAA: ???
  • AG: Ballfire
  • BH: Ivar57
  • GG: Lily
  • MnM: Jordy / Axzel
  • NFE: Mirbro / Jordy
  • STAB: pannuracotta
Metagross

Last year's finalists are looking ready to repeat that feat, with a strong roster across seven out of eight slots and the support necessary to have another great year. Almost every slot can build for themselves, with STABLE, Ivar, Lily, Jordy, Mirbro, and pannuracotta able to build for their respective tiers. STABLE, Lily, and pannuracotta look to be the stars of this team, with STABLE being involved with 2v2 for a long time, Lily having one of the best records in OMPL, and pannuracotta being STAB council and a great STAB player. Ballfire is another solid AG player who can do well in this pool. Europe's primary weakness this year is their AAA slot. Without The Number Man, Europe lacks a strong builder and player for this tier. However, that is just one slot out of eight, so if Europe can figure it out, they should be ready for another return to the playoffs.

France

Captains: Dragonillis and LBDC

Predicted Week 1 Lineup

  • 2v2: lancert
  • AAA: atha
  • AG: Royal1604
  • BH: ???
  • GG: Heika
  • MnM: damflame 3
  • NFE: PandaDoux
  • STAB: LBDC
Greninja

France performed well in last year's OM World Cup, finishing third overall, and they seem on track for another good year, captained by Dragonillis and LBDC, two known and respected OM players who will be able to support their team well. Atha is one of the best AAA players, having a perfect record in two previous OM World Cups and shouldn't have any issues this year either. He is joined by two more great players in damflame 3, who has played in four out of five OM World Cups and should have a strong regular season, and LBDC, who is a great STABmons player and should also be expected to play well. The team's AG and NFE slots are also quite solid, with Royal1604 and PandaDoux having a good amount of experience and having proven themselves to be good players. The 2v2 and Godly Gift slots are a little weaker, with lancert and Heika finding themselves matched upagainst tough opponents. France's BH slot is very questionable, as there is no obvious player to fill it in a difficult pool. The team is overall quite good, with the exception of a few formats, where their players will need to find their footing in order to solidify France as a top team.

UK

Captains: willdbeast and Greybaum

Predicted Week 1 Lineup

  • 2v2: yuki
  • AAA: PA
  • AG: LORD SAGIS
  • BH: Tea Guzzler
  • GG: Greybaum
  • MnM: Clastia
  • NFE: ???
  • STAB: Clementine
Sirfetch'd

Team UK is coming off a good placement in last year's OM World Cup, finishing fifth overall, but it looks like this may be a tough year for them. Greybaum and willdbeast are the team's captains and should be able to provide good support in a few metagames, although the extent of their support may leave something to be desired. The start of the team's issues is that it lost three of its best players in astralydia, xavgb, and stareal, who were all great players and dominant forces in their slots and have left some gaps in their roster. The new meta additions were also not that helpful for them, as LORD SAGIS lacks experience and find himself in tough pools. While yuki is newer to 2v2, he is a great doubles player with lots of support and should be expected to do well. In addition, while PA and Greybaum are well known players, they each lack experience in their slots, and while Greybaum should be able to do fine, PA's lack of experience will most likely hurt him in his games vs more experienced players. Despite some of their slots looking grim, many are excited to see Tea Guzzler play in his first big team tour, and Clementine with support from Greybaum is a force to be reckoned with. Overall, UK's chances of making it to playoffs look very slim, but nothing is ever truly impossible.

US Northeast

Captains: Ducky and berry

Predicted Week 1 Lineup

  • 2v2: Chris32156
  • AAA: Heracross2.0
  • AG: Will
  • BH: TTTech
  • GG: Instruct / Meta
  • MnM: Andyboy
  • NFE: S1nn0hC0nfirm3d
  • STAB: Dr. Phd. BJ / Fissure
Urshifu

US Northeast returns to OM World Cup coming off a disappointing seventh place finish in 2021. Captained by berry and tournament newcomer Ducky, there are high expectations for US Northeast, with strong players in the majority of their slots. Chris32156 is coming off a strong showing in OMPL, finishing the tour with the most wins in 2v2. Will is a strong Anything Goes player, with solid performances across many tours. Andyboy is arguably the strongest Mix and Mega player in the tour, and S1nn0hC0nfirm3d and Dr. Phd. BJ are both expected to do well. Their weakest slots are still strong, with Heracross2.0 doing well in AAA seasonal but lacking strong team tour performances. TTTech is expected to at least go even, with the possibility of going 3-0 in his pool, while Instruct and Meta both have good Godly Gift knowledge. Overall, US Northeast is poised to finish first or second in their pool and should be a shoe-in for playoffs.

US South

Captains: beauts and UT

Predicted Week 1 Lineup

  • 2v2: zee / Itchy
  • AAA: MZ
  • AG: Kate
  • BH: Quantum Tesseract
  • GG: TPP
  • MnM: beauts / Abriel
  • NFE: Kabilapok / beauts
  • STAB: crying
Marshtomp

After a lackluster eighth place performance in OM World Cup IV, US South returns with what looks like a very promising team. Their captains, beauts and UT, are both well respected players who can collectively provide teambuilding support in almost every metagame. US South will not have to rely only on their captains for prep either, with the roster including well known OM players in Quantum Tesseract, who can also help support multiple slots, and MZ, who is a well-known entity and has proven himself as a solid AAA player. While the roster is missing a “mainer” for its Godly Gift and STABmons slots, TPP has played GG in OMPL, and with support from both his managers, it shouldn't be an issue. The same goes for crying, who is a great player and whose lack of experience in STAB should not negatively impact their results. 2v2, AG, and NFE also look promising with zee being one of the best doubles players, Kate being a well-known AG player, and Kabilapok coming off of an NFE Seasonal win. US South looks very good on paper and shouldn't have too many issues making the playoffs.

US West

Captains: cityscapes and Derpyboi

Predicted Week 1 Lineup

  • 2v2: Morgan / Crunchman
  • AAA: quojova / XxLazzerpenguinxX
  • AG: polt
  • BH: quojova / XxLazzerpenguinxX
  • GG: dex / Eggs
  • MnM: Derpyboi
  • NFE: lepton
  • STAB: sasha / anaconja
Wingull

Coming off a win last year, the road to another World Cup title this year seems difficult for US West due to the strength of their pool. The team across the board is fairly strong, albeit lacking a strong anchor in STABmons due to Byleth's retirement. 2v2 and BH are expected to be strong slots for US West, with Morgan and quojova or XxLazzerpenguinxX slotting in those. Godly Gift, NFE, and Mix and Mega are expected to go even or better for West, with Derpyboi and Lepton having great tours last year. Godly Gift and STAB have the potential for greatness, with dex doing well in OM Farm League and Eggs having experience as well, while sasha or anaconja are more than capable pilots with proper support. The main issue for US West this year will be whether they are able to find proper support for their slots. They lack strong builders for AAA, GG, and STAB. If they can build and prep well, they are more than capable of making playoffs. If they can't, the road ahead looks tough for them.

Week Recaps

Week 1

Matchup Recap

The first week of the tournament was full of excitement, with Europe coming out of the gate strong with a dominant win over US West. France started the week down 0-3 but was able to come back and tie versus US South. US Northeast and Asia Pacific had a close series that ended in a tie. UK surprised many with their win against Canada, who made some questionable lineup choices, choosing to start non-mainers in both BH and Mix and Mega.

Highlight Game

DugZa vs Dr. Phd. BJ - STABmons
The first STAB game of the tournament, featuring two very good players, with DugZa coming off of winning the STABmons Seasonal. DugZa's team features Choice Specs Porygon2, while Dr. Phd. BJ brings a more standard team with Urshifu-R and Latios. It's a close game, but ultimately Dr. Phd. BJ loses too many Pokemon to Porygon2 and can't find a path past Flip Turn Toxapex.

Week 2

Matchup Recap

Europe continued their strong performance in Week 2, beating Asia Pacific and guaranteeing themselves a spot in playoffs. US Northeast beat US West, knocking the defending champions out of contention for playoffs. US South proved that their Week 1 performance was not what people should expect, beating Canada and taking them out of contention for playoffs. France took home a win against UK, meaning that UK will have to beat US South in Week 3 to have a shot at playoffs.

Highlight Game

Ivar57 vs MAMP - Balanced Hackmons
A clash of two very strong BH players known for their offensive playstyles, Ivar loads a classic combination of the Boomburst-spamming Xerneas and Yveltal, whereas MAMP opts for Desolate Land Ho-Oh and Swords Dance Regigigas. The game goes back and forth until the end, where Ivar loses a 50/50 and his only remaining chance of winning, Xerneas, faints to Rocky Helmet.

Week 3

Matchup Recap

The final week before playoffs was not disappointing, with US Northeast beating Europe 6-2, cementing themselves as the first seed for playoffs and knocking out Asia Pacific. US South won versus UK, taking the first seed and making it very difficult for UK to make the playoffs. Canada tied with France, sadly knocking UK out of the running for playoffs. Asia Pacific played a good series and beats US West, but both teams were already out of contention for playoffs.

Highlight Game

Tanny89k vs Dragonillis - Balanced Hackmons
Dragonillis opts for a Mewtwo team, an offensive Pokemon that's very hit or miss, whereas Tanny loads a Normalize Dragapult that's terrifying on Team Preview. Tanny sets up a bait that Dragonillis takes with Eternabeam, giving a free switch to Tanny's Dragapult, which uses the cooldown turn as a chance to trap and neutralize Eternatus. This allows him to boost with Acupressure and Baton Pass to a super-charged Regigigas, which ends the game thanks to Power Trip.

Semifinals

Matchup Recap

The first week of playoffs featured two great matchups between US Northeast and France and Europe and US South. US Northeast and France have a really close series, with US Northeast winning the penultimate two games, AG and Godly Gift, to win 5-3. Europe continued to show how good of a team they were with a strong 5-2 win over US South off the backs of two great performances in AG and STABmons.

Highlight Games

Fissure vs LBDC - STABmons
Fissure brings a rain team with the uncommon Poliwrath, while LBDC brings a more standard team featuring Transform Chansey. Fissure is able to get momentum early, claiming two Pokemon with Belly Drum Poliwrath, but then it reveals that it is not running Aqua Jet, so it is not able to win. After that, LBDC's Chansey is able to prevent Fissure's Thundurus and Ferrothorn from making progress, winning LBDC this game.
Jordy vs Kabilapok - NFE
Both teams bring a balance team with a strong pivot, with Jordy's team relying on a hazard stack core with Roselia + Piloswine, while Kabilapok brings the rarer Torracat with Gabite + Roselia for entry hazards and Duosion for applying pressure with Future Sight. Both teams apply pressure early with their hazards, but with Jordy wearing down Machoke early, progress becomes much more difficult to attain for Kabilapok. After Kabilapok sacks Duosion to get the Toxic on Vullaby, the game is reliant on Roselia getting Poison Point off on Torracat, which it does, so the game goes to Jordy.

Finals

STABmons: Dr. Phd. BJ vs pannuracotta
A game many were excited for, Dr. Phd. BJ brings a balance team featuring three uncommon Pokemon in Latias, Grimmsnarl, and Steelix, while pannuracotta brings a pretty standard sand team featuring the up-and-coming Choice Band Buzzwole. pannuracotta's Excadrill goes down to a Heat Wave from Tornadus-T on turn 26, making it quite hard for them to make progress. After that, Dr. Phd. BJ is able to play around the opposing Buzzwole and Thundurus-T before eventually setting up with Calm Mind Latias to close out the game.
SS 2v2 Doubles (Best of 5): Chris32156 vs STABLE
Game 1: STABLE's Kyurem-B has a very strong matchup into Chris's team, so bringing it is practically required, but the choice between the other three is less clear cut. Ultimately, Regieleki discourages STABLE from bringing Cinderace or Tapu Fini, which both match up better into Heatran than Metagross. This calculation by STABLE backfires, as Chris brings Heatran, which OHKOes Metagross and heavily damages Kyurem-B turn 1, securing Chris the game.
Game 2: Chris's Arctovish matches up well into STABLE's team, as it outspeeds every Pokemon under hail or after Electroweb. Chris is discouraged from bringing Alolan Ninetales due to its poor matchup into Politoed, which can underspeed it and override its hail, and Genesect. STABLE has few answers to Zeraora as well, and we see his poor matchup materialize with a swift victory for Chris.
Game 3: In game three, we see STABLE with a relatively strong matchup, with his Porygon2 and Incineroar both boasting possible strong matchups. Chris's hail core is less effective here, with STABLE bringing both Follow Me Blastoise and Kyurem-B. In the game, Chris brings his two Fake Out users into STABLE's Incineroar and Porygon2. Chris's Pokemon are unable to break Porygon2 fast enough as STABLE wins.
Game 4: Chris's team matchups well into STABLE's, having a strong answer for Kyurem-B and Incineroar with Galarian Zapdos and Tapu Fini, respectively. STABLE is able to get around this some with his Follow Me Blastoise and Porygon2; however, he lacks ways to directly threaten Chris's Pokemon outside of redirecting their attacks with Blastoise. In the game, STABLE clicks Fusion Bolt into Galarian Zapdos's Protect, while Chris gets a fortunate burn on Kyurem-B with Flare Blitz and wins.
SS Balanced Hackmons: TTTech vs Ivar57
Both players load fairly standard balance teams, with Ivar opting for a Doom Desire + Steely Spirit Kartana combo and TTTech using a RegenVest Heatran + offensive Eternatus structure. An early Final Gambit removes Dialga and Eternatus from the equation, causing problems for Ivar, as Kartana now lacks a key supportive piece for breaking past Heatran. Ultimately Ivar is unable to stop Xerneas from breaking through after his Ho-Oh goes down.
SS NFE: S1nn0hC0nfirm3d vs Jordy
S1nn0h brings a team with lesser-used Pokemon such as Gabite, Slowpoke, and Machoke, while Jordy brings a standard Piloswine + Galarian Corsola balance anchored by a Thwackey + Gurdurr offensive core. Jordy's team is able to consistently make progress throughout the game with his Calm Mind Galarian Corsola pressuring Ho3n's team heavily, and with a couple fortunate paralyses, the game quickly swings his way, with little for Ho3n to do about it.
SS Godly Gift: Instruct vs Lily
Instruct's team seems to be a pretty basic Zamazenta-C team, though it features Flygon and Galarian Slowbro instead of Zygarde-10% and Tangrowth. Lily, on the other hand, brings a pretty standard Mewtwo team. The game starts out with both players playing around each other's wallbreaking and trading a few KOs. However, on turn 24, Lily is able to get Galarian Moltres in and claim 3 KOs with it, leaving Instruct unable to deal with her Mewtwo and Tangrowth.
SS Anything Goes: Will vs Ballfire
Will's team is a threatening hyper offense, while Ballfire brings dual Xerneas. After playing around Ballfire's Geomancy Xerneas and Yveltal, Will positions Dragon Dance Necrozma-DM and ends the game with a sweep.
SS Almost Any Ability: Heracross2.0 vs Ainzcrad
The game that ended up deciding the series, Heracross2.0 brings a very standard team with Choice Specs Azelf, while Ainzcrad loads a bulky offense team. It is quickly realized that Azelf has a great matchup, and it is only a matter of time before Heracross2.0 positions himself for a sweep.
SS Mix and Mega: Andyboy vs Axzel
Andyboy brings an HO team, while Axzel loads a team with the rare Lucarionite Golisopod. While Axzel does his best, Andyboy's offensive threats prove to be too much to handle, and Lucarionite Tapu Koko ends the game.

In Closing

US Northeast ultimately had another strong 6-2 win vs Europe, winning the tour and redeeming themselves after a disappointing run last year. They finished the tournament with great performances in AG, Mix and Mega, and 2v2, going 5-0, 4-1, and 4-1, respectively, along with solid performances in STABmons, BH, and NFE. Their win marked the end of SS team tours, with next year's tournaments featuring SV metagames. While it is sad to leave SS behind, everyone is excited to play the new SV metagames, and OMWC V was a fitting way to usher in the new generation.
