Project SS UU Victim Of The Week v2- Week 53: Darmanitan (Submissions)

Voting has finished! After a tiebreak from Magnum,Specs wins the week for the checks and Aqua Jet and ExiDudi take runner up. Meanwhile, the pain is excruciating wins the counters while HydreigonTheChild takes runner up. All of the submissions will be added to the Hall of Fame. Now, let’s see this week’s victim!
:ss/Tornadus:
Tornadus (M)
Ability: Defiant
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Acrobatics
- Knock Off
- U-turn
- Heat Wave

This week we have the angry cloud man Tornadus! An underrated pivot that has had its power showcased a few times, Tornadus is exceptionally difficult to wall with its high power flying type attacks and coverage being able to slam staples like zarude and skarmory. Even threats like Salamence and aegislash have to be wary thanks to defiant boosting its attack. How will you stop this dangerous Djinn? Submissions are due January 1 at 11:59 PM GMT-8. This is a double points week, so be sure to submit to earn lots of points!

Not nihilego, that was stupid. Because it's rotom again.

Rotom-Wash @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 40 Def / 216 Spe
Timid Nature
- Volt Switch
- Hydro Pump
- Pain Split/ Defog
- Thunderbolt

252 Atk Tornadus Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 40 Def Rotom-Wash: 89-105 (29.2 - 34.5%) -- 4.8% chance to 3HKO

0 SpA Rotom-Wash Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Tornadus: 242-288 (80.9 - 96.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Room stays healthy with pain spilt and takes tornadus' attacks all day while also giving it's team momentum. I'm not sure if this is enough to count as a counter but if one wants it's also possible to run defig over pain split but that reduces the amount of time it can counter/check tornadus, even though it works even if it isn't healthy

Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Icicle Crash
- Earthquake
- Ice Shard
- Knock Off

Mamoswine is a good offensive check to Tornadus since it has solid enough bulk and priority to bypass Tornadus's Speed. Thick Fat has actual use here since it avoids the 2HKO from Heat Wave too.

252+ Atk Choice Band Mamoswine Ice Shard vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Tornadus: 320-380 (107 - 127%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Ice Shard vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Tornadus: 281-330 (93.9 - 110.3%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO

252 Atk Tornadus Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mamoswine: 199-235 (55.1 - 65%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Tornadus Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mamoswine: 117-138 (32.4 - 38.2%) -- 97.3% chance to 3HKO
4 SpA Tornadus Heat Wave vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Thick Fat Mamoswine: 124-148 (34.3 - 40.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Submitting this as a counter, as aside from KnockTurn it has no ways to break thru it, and Rhyp also threatens it w Stone Edge (or Rock Blast).

Submitting Diancie as a counter. Torn just cannot meaningfully hurt the standard Diancie set at all, and Diancie threatens an OHKO on Torn with Diamond Storm.

252 Atk Tornadus Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 252 HP / 96 Def Diancie: 54-64 (17.7 - 21%) -- possible 7HKO after Leftovers recovery

Submitting Thundurus-T as a check to Tornadus, Unlike other checks, Thundurus-T can actually deal with Tornadus’s attacks as they are most of the time 3HKOs and OHKO him with Thunderbolt, I chose the Nasty Plot Set since Tornadus is usually runned with something that can take care of Thundurus-T so wallbreaking is needed.

Thundurus-Therian Calcs

252 SpA Thundurus-Therian Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Tornadus: 386-456 (129 - 152.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Lycanroc-Dusk is a very strong check to Tornadus. Tornadus's most powerful attack, Knock Off, only 2HKOes, and Accelerock is always an OHKO with the Life Orb.

252 Atk Tornadus Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Lycanroc-Dusk: 138-163 (47.4 - 56%) -- 81.6% chance to 2HKO

Gigalith can come in many times on tornadus and set up rocks in its face and threaten to ohko it with rock blast. With sand chip tornadus has limited turns especially being pressured with givng gigalith free entry hazards every time it lets it in.

36 Atk Gigalith Rock Blast (3 hits) vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Tornadus: 324-384 (108.3 - 128.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Seeing "HydreigontheChild" suddenly become "Isabelle" was as almost as shocking as being reminded people use Tornadus in this tier. As for my submission....

:sm/zygarde-10%:
Zygarde-10% @ Choice Band
Ability: Aura Break
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Thousand Arrows
- Outrage
- Extreme Speed
- Toxic/Glare/Skitter Smack

Submitting Zygarde-10% (again) as a check given it's one of the few mons in the tier (and on the VR) that naturally outspeeds Tornadus-Incarnate, given the use of Hasty nature makes Thousands Arrows capable of OHKOing when it otherwise wouldn't, and given Outrage OHKO even with a Def-neutral nature anyway. As frail as Zygarde-10% is, itemless STAB Acrobatics from Tornadus oddly isn't a guaranteed OHKO either. In fact, it has a lower chance to OHKO Zygarde-10% with Acrobatics than the OHKO risk that Thousand Arrows presents to its Hasty self:

Zydog's threats:
252 Atk Choice Band Zygarde-10% Thousand Arrows vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Tornadus: 274-324 (91.6 - 108.3%) -- 50% chance to OHKO
252 Atk Choice Band Zygarde-10% Outrage vs. 0 HP / 0- Def Tornadus: 364-430 (121.7 - 143.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Tornadus's threats:
252 Atk Tornadus Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Zygarde-10%: 219-258 (87.9 - 103.6%) -- 25% chance to OHKO

Since both Zydog's STABs deal with Tornadus rather handily, with Thousands Arrows being a guaranteed OHKO if it's taken basically any chip damage, the last slot is pretty flexible too, which is nice for a check that stillgets to spam the move it already wants to spam 99% of the time anyway. Glare in particular also screws Tornadus over, however, if for some reason you don't want to just outright OHKO the least Genie and put it out of its misery.

This week we have pivot thundurus! This is the first “repeat of a Pokémon” so to speak, as we tacked the Nasty Plot set wayyy back in Week 14. Now, with a different meta and a new common set I think it’s fair to take on thundurus again. Anyway, pivot thundurus is the new dominant set, using its great power and coverage to wear down teams to clean late game while being very tough to switch into. How will you stop this beast? Nihilego is a good check to Thundurus-T that can take anyone of its attacks and OHKO it with Power Gem.

Impish Nature

Bulu can switch in and threaten toxic's constantly and can regain hp with grassy terrain and synthesis to reduce the progress thundy-t makes and psychic + volt switch barely does 60 on a max role especially with grassy terrain and without rocks it deals 48 especially with spin drill, tenta, and mandi being able to remove hazards for bulu. Bulu counters thundy-t as in a 1v1 situation it is unable to break bulu as synthesis heals off any progress it makes

252 SpA Thundurus-Therian Psychic vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Tapu Bulu: 111-131 (32.2 - 38%) -- 1.1% chance to 3HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery

While gastro may crumble to the incredible power of nasty plot thanks to its low attacking stats, you completely stone wall this variant of thundy, easily recovering all of its hits while threatening burns and poisons. Even amoonguss doesn't want to take repeated attacks + hazards. Most importantly you block its momentum grabbing tool which is one of the biggest strengths of pivot.

CALCS
252 SpA Thundurus Focus Blast vs. 252 HP / 172+ SpD Gastrodon: 113-133 (26.5 - 31.2%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

0 SpA Gastrodon Scald vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Thundurus: 97-115 (32.4 - 38.4%) -- 98.2% chance to 3HKO

(Even though it isn't in the set presented,

(it can also be SpD oriented to check thund-t and reg molt way more effectively btw)
Submitting this as a check. So since this Thund-T doesn't carry GK, Swampert is a quite effective check thanks to its ok mixed bulk and good enough typing allowing to take hits from it relatively well while also crippling it with Toxic or pivoting out with Flip Turn, though Swampert can't constantly take hits from it since it has no recovery. Also if it's SpD invested you can take hits with more ease.
