Additionally, council has an announcement! As we now have enough mons for a proper meta to start forming, we'd like to take the opportunity now and take a short playtesting break to ensure submitters stay aware of the state of the meta. Assuming this new slate gets coded in the near future, we would also tentatively like to hold a roomtour this weekend! Stay tuned for more details on that in the future, and join the Discord to stay up to date on any other announcements!

:rampardos: Rock/Fairy 1 of 2. Infinite coverage guy kinda cringe but it wears itself down real quick with all the recoil so it's probably fine. Hates Goldoco's guts, but you also have coverage for it so. At least it does different things from Bastio.

:bastiodon: Rock/Fairy 2 of 2. Funny defensive guy. Petroglyph is cool but kinda bad; mon will only run it cause it doesn't have better tools. MBounce is pretty nice to diversify the hazard game, though you unfortunately lose pretty bad to just about all of the setters. We'll see how this one pans out.

:archeops: Alticombat is dead in the water. Amazing offensive mon, probably the single scariest thing in the meta right now, nothing eats STABs. Gonna have to keep an eye on this one.

:carracosta: Me when the best spinner benefits from keeping hazards up on its side. Generally good mon, helps a lot with Meganium. Hates the amount of EQs being thrown around in the current meta but I'm sure it can manage.

:tyrantrum: Boring ngl. DD STABs EQ is currently pretty nuts, but it'll be a lot more manageable once we have non-Ground weak Fairies.

:aurorus: Big Ghost. Clicks Big Ghost Moves and doesn't ask questions. Meta seems a little too fast-paced for it atm, but perhaps once we calm down some of the offensive mons it'll have a chance to shine.

The first ever SV Paleomons roomtour is now in the books, so I wanna take a moment to talk about the results.

So what'd we see here? Well,
- As expected, the meta currently revolves around hazard stack. Goldoco and Aerodactyl make for a disgustingly good removal blocking core, as of the spinners we currently have, the only one who can truly threaten both is Kabutops, but since both of them frequently run Earthquake (Goldoco to hit Steel resists and Aerodactyl to hit Goldoco) it can't come in safely on either mon, meaning that keeping hazards up is a trivial task in the current meta.
- Out of all the hazards, Cradily webs are probably the most degenerate. A lot of mons currently rely on their speed quite a lot, so allowing them to outspeed the opponent's entire team is obviously very strong in a meta where webs aren't easy to remove or avoid. Not to mention Cradily on its own is one of the best defensive tools in the entire tier, so it's not like you're sacrificing much by running it.
- Extreme Speed Heliolisk is silly. Sure, it struggles into the vast majority of defensive mons right now, but as a revenge killing tool it's second to none. Pretty much every offensive mon is susceptible to it from 70% or lower, making it incredibly difficult to effectively sweep while it's still alive. Certainly something we'll be keeping our eyes on as the meta grows.
- Archeops was surprisingly balanced, all things considered. As scary as it is in the builder, in practice it hates taking recoil from Head Smash, and its fairly low bulk (and susceptibility to many scarfers) makes it easier to handle than you might expect (though a big part of that might also be that First Flight currently activates after Webs and 11/12 teams had Webs Cradily, so uh). Still an incredibly strong offensive tool, and not a mon to be taken lightly, so council will continue to keep an eye on it.
- Since this was the first real foray into the Paleomons meta and we only had so many games to test, some mons were notably absent. I figured I'd list them out here and talk a bit about why they may not have seen any usage.
  • Alticombat is supposedly 'outclassed' by Archeops, which is most likely why it was missing, though notably it is probably the most effective defogger in the tier, so there may be future potential for it.
  • Armaldo has been immediately powercrept to oblivion and holds absolutely no place in the current meta, so council will be sure to include it in the first balancing discussions.
  • I honestly don't know why Meganium wasn't used, as it probably would've been quite good, preying upon Cradily's inability to hit it for meaningful damage and the lack of people running its answers (mainly Carracosta).
  • Omastar is clearly the less favored of the two Regenerator mons, as its passivity and lack of utility really hurt its chances at viability. Another mon council will be sure to look at in the future.
  • Tyrantrum, while less overtly terrifying, is in a similar boat to Meganium in that I have no idea why it wasn't used. Mon is solid, the Fairies weren't all that common and Rampardos loses to it anyway, it's a great webs tool, so overall it's probably just another mon that got overlooked due to the limited amount of games and team variety.

Overall, I'm thankful that there's nothing overtly broken in the meta, but there's still a lot of room for improvement here. Hopefully folks can use this discussion to help mold their subs in the coming slates, and I look forward to playing more Paleomons in the future! Stay tuned for Slate 5.

SLATE 5 - Spooky Season (Skeledirge, Gourgeist, Crobat)
:sv/skeledirge: :swsh/gourgeist: :swsh/crobat:

Ancient Forms are back with a seasonal twist! The goal for this slate will be to create ancient versions of the mons listed above, which will follow the same rules as regional variants. The rules for submission are as follows:
  • You can sub 1 to 3 of the Pokémon chosen in this slate (reworks on existing Pre-Evolutions can also be made if you want)
  • Make sure your sub would be balanced in the current meta. Now that the meta is large enough, please be sure to justify your mon's competitive role in the sub.
  • Custom Elements are allowed, as long as they are different from already existing abilities/moves and are relatively simple to code (no custom field effects - we're learning from last gen lol. Also, if you think it's codable but our coder disagrees, then you'd better be prepared to code it yourself if it wins.)
  • Since this is an Ancient Form slate, make sure your submissions have the same BST as the original Pokémon.
  • To clarify, any Pokémon not currently in Generation 9 will instead use its Generation 8 movepool minus dexited moves (aka moves that are unusable in SV).

Role: Our Fairies are very lacking right now. Two Rock/Fairies, one of which is fully offensive, neither of which have recovery. Ouch. One of Gourgeist's most unique traits is its size-based forms allowing it to serve as both an offensive and defensive tool in one submission, so that's what I'm going for here. Small is a fast special attacker that slots into a fairly empty section of our speed tiers, while Super is a very fat mon that's sure to be a nuisance for offensive teams. The other guys are also there but uh, yeah.
Flavor: Gourgeist before it inhabited the pumpkin. Scares other Pokémon by grimacing at them, then consumes their fear to sustain itself.

Removed Moves: -Poltergeist, Grass Knot, Power Whip, Giga Drain, Phantom Force, Worry Seed, Bullet Seed
Role:
Small is a No Guard wallbreaker with access to stuff like No Guard STAB Fire Blast, Focus Blast and Thunder coming off a 110 SpAtk and 115 Spd gives it a good speed tier, Fire/Steel is also a decent defensive type, and can boost further with Nasty Plot, can take on Goldoco and checks Kabutops, Omastar, Aerodactyl, Lapras, Meganium, Alticombat, Brawlutra, Rampardos, Bastiodon and Tyrantrum, it has a hard time switching in due to its poor defenses

Magic Guard mon, can safely remove hazards from a team with Rapid Spin and if Aerodactyl or Aurorus wants to switch in, it can smack Aerodactyl with Thunderbolt/Shadow Ball and Aurorus with Shadow Ball, could also burn Aerodactyl with Will-o-Wisp, could also use Nasty Plot + Flame Charge to sweep late-game, can also annoy the opponents team with Will-o-Wisp, Leech Seed, Trick and Knock Off

Solid wall and bulky pivot thanks to Intimidate, with good utility in Leech Seed, which when paired with Intimidate, makes the opponent want to switch, which Gourg can use to spread burns with Will-o-Wisp, or remove items with Knock Off, so it forces progress by the opponent, it can also remove hazards with Rapid Spin and heal consistantly with Synthesis

NGas bulky mon, hard walls Aurorus, Meganium and Heliolisk, Goldoco's Good as Gold doesnt work on it, so it can freely throw out status moves, could stay in on Cradily for Toxic Heal to not work and deal passive damage to it but its probably scared of Storm Surge, and its overall a check for any future mon that relies on its abilities too much, can also heal with Synthesis and Leech Seed

Flavor: Gourgeist, but its a witch's caldruon now, will probably draw if it wins

Veto time! Gonna do vetoes slightly different this slate, as I'm mixing them in with a sub review! Instead of just providing an opportunity for vetoed subs to be changed, all subs are free to be changed during this veto phase. However, if a sub is still veto-worthy at the end of this period, it will remain vetoed for voting, so be deliberate.

:crobat: Speed creep is really cringe. Also kinda sucks that it's another Fairy (great) but it isn't bulky (not great) and that 4x Steel weakness sucks for trying to 1v1 offensive guys.
:skeledirge: where blaze. Mon looks fine into Goldoco but I think you're hyping it up too much considering its horrible matchups into a bunch of our other guys. Gives us our second fast, physically offensive Fire as well which is kinda bluh.

The greatest subs in the history of the mod

:skeledirge: Overlaps a lot with Tyrantrum, and they share similar counterplay, except this guy doesn't get any setup, making it pretty much always worse. Not a fan.

:skeledirge:Another Ground-weak Fairy is rough, but this mon handles Tyrantrum pretty well while also doing well into stuff like... uh... nope, that's pretty much it lol. Fire is honestly kinda terrible defensively in the current meta unfortunately.
:crobat: I like Poison/Ground both offensively and defensively in the current meta, though this mon suffers from a pretty horrendous Aero matchup. Still a solid addition.

:skeledirge: While this mon is definitely great into the current meta, council believes it's too good. This sub is vetoed. Mon's a bit too optimized stats-wise for what it provides to a team, which will make it difficult to justify using other options besides it and drastically lower the viability of any offensive mons that can't beat it 1v1. Please lower its Defense by 10-15 points and distribute it to stats that don't matter as much for it, such as Attack or Speed. Also, this is just my personal opinion, but I don't think the mon needs Soundproof. Meganium already has solid counterplay, and making hard counters for balanced mons is pretty cringe.
:gourgeist: Super interesting. I see what you're going for with all the forms, though Vessel of Ruin is a little sus on Large. Considering its access to recovery and Wisp, idk if I want a Steel that bulky in the meta (though the flavor is shockingly good), but otherwise I like what you're going for here a lot.

:skeledirge:cocodrilo. Looks fine, but we've got a lot of special-leaning bulky Waters already so I'm not huge on it, plus weakness -> immunity abil is still cringe.
:gourgeist: Fine mon. Regular seems pretty terrible but the rest are good. Also gives us a terrain guy.
:crobat: Third fast Flying type, I sleep. Ability is fine but similar to OSP's Crobat I'm really not interested in more speed creep.

:crobat: Pretty cringe tbh. No weakness mon completely carried by its ability because otherwise it's extremely weak and lacks utility. Pretty much locked to stall and even there it's not great.
:gourgeist: Looks pretty bad. Torch Song is a good move, but this mon's STAB combo is pretty horrible and it struggles to deal meaningful damage before dying. Pretty much every form is lacking in the stats department because of how much you put into SpAtk, but the problem is without that SpAtk this mon would be even worse.
:skeledirge: This mon is vetoed as its STAB combo and stats are far too good for a Sun setter (not to mention Morning Sun). Drought is a pretty volatile ability to work with here, so I'd recommend just dropping it from the mon.

:crobat:The sig is Fire type when I'm pretty sure you meant for it to be Flying type lol. Anyway, this mon is CRAZY strong, though its mediocre coverage keeps it in check somewhat. Yet another fast Flying type though so L.

:gourgeist: All of these are garbage except for Small, which is literally just Sheer Force Weavile. Also the stat changes between sizes aren't consistent which is wack. Not into this at all.

You'll have 24 hours to make changes/correct vetoes, and then voting will start.

Alright, time is up, so voting can now begin! All vetoes were fixed so all subs can be voted for. The voting rules are as follows:
  • Each Pokémon will be voted for separately.
  • There is no limit on the amount of submissions you can vote for. First Place will count for 3 points, Second Place for 2, and all others will count for 1 point. If you only vote for two submissions in a category, First Place will count for 2 points and Second Place will count for 1 point. If you only vote for one submission in a category, that vote will only count for 1 point.
  • Self-Votes may not be First Place and have a limit of 6 points total.

Mon A: First Place, Second Place, Third Place
Mon B: First Place, Second Place
Mon C: First Place, Second Place, Third Place, Fourth Place, Fifth Place

You’ll have 48 hours to vote, so get those votes in!
