Explosion Metagross is an offensive Pokemon with some defensive utility and a simple gameplan. Explosion is the main selling point of this set, as it does a lot of damage to the tiers defensive Pokemon like Hydrapple, and Slowking. Earthquake lets it hit the steels that resists its Explosion and Heavy Slam, like Iron Crown and Excadrill. The last moveslot is flexible and is there for utility, Stealth Rock gives it excellent utility, setting hazards while the opponent switches out. Bullet Punch letting it clean up weakened opponents without wasting HP. Knock Off lets it remove important items, such as Heavy-Duty Boots on Zapdos. Custap Berry lets it gain priority on any one attack if it happens to be on low HP, and Normal Gem can allow it to kill some important targets, such as max defense Hydrapple after Tera Normal. The given speed investment outspeeds common Mandibuzz, Azumarill, and Ursaluna sets, however you can increase its speed to allow it to outspeed mons like Choice Band Tyranitar (184 EVs), and regular Tinkaton (196 EVs), but doing so would sacrifice some of the Bulk that gives Metagross its defensive utility. Tera Normal can let it survive some hits better and powers up its explosion, letting it OHKO common Zapdos and is favours it to OHKO Hydrapple, but beware that most of its defensive utility comes from its typing, so only use Tera if you are sure that you want to explode and that you need Tera Normal to kill the opponent.
This Metagross set fits well on various offensive structures, being a wallbreaker and forcing out some difficult to check mons. It provides a soft check against Latios, Iron Crown, and Ogerpon-C without Knock Off. It pairs well with pivots like Zapdos and Tornadus, as well as with other offensive mons that struggle against Hydrapple and Zapdos, like Excadrill and Ogerpon-C. Beware that this Metagross is extremely scared of Burns from Rotom-Wash and Skeledirge, as they resist most of its attacks and minimize its damage, especially Skeledirge, as it's also immune to Explosion. Zapdos is also difficult to chip into Explosion range without Knock Off.
