Almost exactly two years ago, the second nerfing process for Equilibra began. As a then-S tier option, Equilibra was the sole enabler for one of the most popular offensive strategies at the time – pairing strong wallbreakers with Doom Desire – and furthermore indirectly increased the viability of other Pokemon such as Urshifu-S and its S-tier partner FuturePort Slowking, leading to a highly centralized and unhealthy metagame. Yet, Equilibra's capabilities stretched much farther than team support via Doom Desire. Its impressive 133 Special Attack allowed Equilibra to force progress independently of its teammates, threatening KO thresholds on Pokemon that were supposed to act as checks, while the versatility offered by dual immunity abilities in Levitate and Bulletproof made Equilibra able to fit the defensive needs of almost any team. This is also not to mention the guessing games that these abilities would often inspire – to quote the original nerf thread:
Furthermore, the duality of its abilities leads to difficult scenarios for players, often resulting in 50/50s where the opponent has to appropriately guess the ability at the risk of losing a turn. When coupled with Doom Desire, having to guess between Levitate and Bulletproof can often sway the momentum of a match towards the Equilibra user's side in a single turn. This means that on certain Pokemon like Venusaur and on the mirror matchup, even when running a move for each for each ability you still need to scout carefully to be sure of which one to use.
However, the metagame council believes that current Equilibra would not be unbalanced if given back the tools it lost. After a massive DLC wave, multiple new CAPs and OU bans, and over a year of metagame development, it stands to reason that Equilibra should no longer be held liable for balance issues it had in a wildly different metagame. This nerf reversion, as the first of its kind, establishes the power for the metagame council to better respond to Gamefreak's ever-changing release model by freely nerfing unbalanced CAPs and restoring them later on if deemed appropriate. This is also the first change in a large end-of-gen push the metagame council and CAP mods have planned, so keep an eye out for more announcements in the coming days and weeks!
